This poignant canine memoir recounts the story of Ginny, a Long Island dog with a remarkable ability to seek out and rescue homeless cats. Simple but delightful, the story is narrated from the perspective of Ginny's owner, Philip Gonzalez. Badly disabled in an industrial accident, Gonzalez quickly fell into a downward spiral of despair. His saving grace arrived in the form of a small, scruffy grey dog. Ginny quickly provided Philip with a focus in life: cats--hundreds of them. Each chapter recounts Ginny's amazing rescues of helpless felines. Particularly heartwarming is the image of Ginny running across broken glass to reach a kitten in distress. As Ginny saved cats, Philip housed them, and soon his life was taken over by the creatures--many disabled or disfigured. The Dog Who Rescues Cats is packed with touching photographs of Ginny and her feline family. Included is an introduction by Cleveland Amory, noted animal enthusiast and author of The Cat Who Came for Christmas.

Book Description

Philip Gonzalez had lost all interest in living after an industrial accident left him disabled. A friend suggested he adopt a dog.Reluctantly he went to the shelter, where Ginny, a badly abused one-year-old pup, quickly won him over. Philip realized immediately that Ginny was no ordinary dog--she had an amazing sixth sense that enabled her to find and rescue stray and ailing cats. There's Madame, who is completely deaf; Revlon, who has only one eye;Betty Boop, who has no hind feet;and Topsy, a paralyzed kitten whom Ginny found abandoned in an empty building. Ginny and Philip have now rescued and found homes for over 200 cats, and they have over 60 "outdoor cats" whom they visit and feed twice daily. Even more than extraordinary, Ginny's angelic mission has given Philip a sense of purpose and a new lease on life. You will never forget the true adventures of Ginny, the dog who rescues cats.

3 out of 5 stars Great dog-good story. .......2007-02-16

I really liked the story of Ginny and what she does. The writing was a little sophomoric, but it doesn't ruin the story. The pictures of Ginny's rescued cats are great.

5 out of 5 stars EXTRAORDINARY DEVOTION.......2007-01-20

Ginny, an improbable mixed breed dog, was NOT the companion writer Philip Gonzalez set out to adopt when he went looking for a canine friend. But once they bonded, Ginny was to prove not only a devoted friend to the writer; she also showed an extraordinary talent which resulted in many lives being saved, and man and dog becoming world-famous celebrities. Ginny's singular occupation was rescuing cats -- cats at risk on the mean streets of New York, cats in perilous situations, cats in abandoned buildings, fighting for their lives. During her long lifetime, Ginny was responsible for dozens of rescues of cats, and she and her devoted human companion appeared on dozens of television and radio shows. She was recognized and awarded for her selfless bravery and devotion to helping homeless cats. Anyone who loves cats, and/or dogs, should read this moving and amazing book.

5 out of 5 stars Will Touch Your heart.......2006-06-26

What if Ginny had not been rescued? What if she had not been adopted?

Then the world might never have learned about her unique skills and special personality

This book will touch your heart, and make you think about the many Ginnies that are right now sitting in shelters, waiting to be adopted and have their special personalities discovered

Let's adopt them!!

Ginny's unique talents in locating sick and injured cats had rendered her numerous appearances in CNN, Animal Planet and major news. Her rescue stories were illustrated by two national best selling books: The Dog who Rescues Cats and the Blessing of the Animals. Ginny passed away on August 25th, 2005.

With the passing of Ginny, her unfinished mission of cat rescuing is continued by her caretaker Philip Gonzalez everyday. A non profit organization, The Ginny Fund, has been established to raise fund for cat rescuing in Long Beach New York.

5 out of 5 stars Our Kitty Saint has left us..........2005-08-27

Today's New York Daily News reported on the passing of Ginny, a/k/a the Mother Theresa of Cats, gone at the age of 17. She succumbed to old age yesterday afternoon on a blanket in Philip Gonzalez's care. As for Ginny's story, this is one of my favorite books. The stories are truly heartwarming and this book was a "gotta have it" purchase. Browsing the pet section in a local bookstore, I found this and it jogged my memory: Ginny's story was familiar to me due to a Reader's Digest article, but what happened next? This book captures all the tails...er, TALES, lol. I will definitely re-read this now. How could a dog love cats she doesn't live with? As a cat person, I've always been intrigued by this. How ironic that such incredible humanity could have come from one of god's furry creatures. Rest in peace, Ginny. Let us hope there are more of you in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful.......2004-05-06

I read this book in one afternoon and handed it off to my husband, who could not put it down. I relate to the author in one respect: after having animals all my life, I connected with one cat so profoundly that I have devoted my life and work to alleviating animal suffering and overcoming the devastating problem of pet overpopulation. It's bittersweet. I love animals with a depth that is so satisfying, and enjoy human and animal company more than I ever was able. But I am now so attuned to animal suffering (generally due to human neglect or abuse -- I'm not trying to fight the forces of nature) that it is difficult to focus on anything else. Just read this book. It feels so good!

5 out of 5 stars Who Would NOT Like This Book?.......2002-11-18

A continuation of a very sweet story. I have a few stray cats around my home and even though my inside cats aren't as willing to share as Ginny (LOL), I make sure to feed them and give them shelter. I highly recommend this book and also the one that came before it! (Not sure of the exact title).

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK!.......2001-01-06

Just as I feel about their first book, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this one too! Let's hope these true stories inspire others so be so kind. Enjoy.

It's hard enough to carry the name of a famous father. Davis Love III took on even more pressure when he stepped into his famous father's spikes and went out, like his father before him, to earn his living on the Professional Golf Association tour. Fortunately for the son, the father was not only a fine player, he was also one of the country's most respected golf teachers, and he taught his son well. Love III's homage to Love Jr., who was killed in a plane crash, is a literal love-fest, a gracefully emotional hybrid of personal memoir and golfing wisdom. Like Harvey Penick's Little Red Book, the instructional portion of Every Shot I Take, collected from the father's compulsive note-takings, is filled with the kinds of nuggets--practical and inspirational--that golfers cling to when the sweet spot on their clubs begins to turn sour.

          Book Description

As Davis Love III walked the fairways of the Oakland Hills Country Club, in contention during the final round of the 1996 U.S. Open Championship, he had a powerful ally on his side. For the rest of the nation the day may have been Father's Day, but for Love every day on a golf course is father's day. It was Davis Love, Jr., master professional and legendary teacher, who taught his son the game in all its beautiful complexity. As a child, Davis III was encouraged just to play, to enjoy the game as he grew and developed his athletic skills, to find the pleasure in the game that can lead to the desire for improvement. But when, early in his teens, Davis III declared himself ready to take golf seriously, to put in the time to learn and understand the physical and mental components of the game that turn a golfer into a champion, his father was delighted, determined, and ready. With every shot he takes, Davis Love III provides a tribute to the strength and the value of his father's teachings. And in Every Shot I Take, he shares with us the lessons he learned about how to play golf with power, with skill, and with joy. Those lessons range widely, from the psychological ("Let your attitude determine your golf game; don't let your golf game determine your attitude") to the physical ("To hit the ball far, hit the ball straight; I try to hit the ball at 80 percent of my overall power, because at 80 percent I have a much better chance of hitting the ball with the center of the clubface") to the technical ("When you begin your downswing, and your left foot returns to the ground, put your cleats in the same holes they were in originally"). They include drills like the Hitchhike Drill, where you place your right hand behind your back and your left thumb on your right shoulder, then in a spinning motion move your thumb to your left shoulder -- that's the golf swing in miniature! There are the Ten Commandments of Putting, six steps to successful long bunker shots, and tips for playing in the wind and rain, on fast greens, or out of long rough. Yet all are ultimately about something more than golf.

          4 out of 5 stars Every Shot I Take..........2003-04-04

Every shot I take is a classic peace written by my favorite golfer, Davis Love III. This book portays his relationship with his father and how this father, Davis Love Jr., helped him on his way to success and on his way to becoming a great golfer and American. This book tells about this Davis Jr., Masters debut in 1988. The U.S.G.A. Book of the year was truly amazing and I would read it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars You the Man, Davis!.......2001-01-13

Davis is so classy a person and a talented golfer. What about that shot on 17th at Augusta? This book tugs at your heart relating the death of his father. Then the episode with his first major and the rainbow. His brother caddying. The eleven cent putting drill (I keep the putter and eleven cents in the den for practice since then.) This endures many who never pulled for this humble man cheer for another big win for DL3 and the rest of his legion fans pull for another title for our hero! Keep on being you, DL3. You and Freddie are our guys. Thanks for this read.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully powerful and insightful reading........2000-04-05

Even if you are not a true golf fan, this is one book you should read. The instructional tips are inevitably useful and the inspiration that you receive will stay with you. For all of us who idolized our fathers, this book expresses those feelings wonderfully and compassionately. Thank you for writing this book Davis.

This is a very inspirational book and is more than just a plain golf book. I am 12 years old and a big fan of Davis Love 3. This showed me what golf was all about. There were many hints and tips that guided me through my gof years so far and I believe this to be the best book i've ever read.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting little reference book.......2006-04-26

With conversational Indonesian being quite simple, I was able to get a lot out of this little book. I used this book exclusively for about 3 weeks before travelling to Indonesia, and by the time I arrived I could produce simple sentences for travel purposes. The book doesn't provide you with any organized method of learning, but it does contain a grammar section that covers the basics, and after studying that section you can deduce a lot from the example sentences throughout the book. I tried to practice making new sentences by substituting words into the sentences given.

The topics are relevant to travel and basic conversation, and the example sentences are appropriate. I've also found the table of contents and glossary very easy to use, and they help me rapidly find the section I'm looking for. It's a well organized little reference book and I still use it even though I've continued my studies beyond the phrasebook level.

5 out of 5 stars How can a small book like this contain so much?.......2005-03-07

How can a small book like this contain so much (that is actually useful)?

Amazing! This book doesn't teach you Indonesian, and that's not the purpose of the book either, but it goes very far in almost doing so.

I have an Indonesian friend, and she was impressed with the number of everyday and not so everyday situations covered in the book, besides being written by someone who really knows this foreign turf.

I can attest to the nearly indestructible cover. And it is small enough to fit in most shirt pockets.

If you already know some basic knowledge and/or understanding of Indonesian, this book will be of great help.

4 out of 5 stars New and Improved.......2004-01-24

I was in Indo. recently and took with me an older version of this book, about 15 years older. It was less than half the size and was lacking in every way. There were even pagination mistakes. Anyway, enough about that.
I have a virtual library of LP phrasebooks and they are all good, which is more than I can say for their guidebooks, which vary tremendously in quality. LP phrasebooks are always more complete, better organized, and offer more important grammatical and clutural information than any other series. "Indonesian Phrasebook" is no exception.
Everything is easy to find, as long as it's in the book. It's also a nice size, has an attractive and indestructible cover and binding, and uses lots of fonts for ease of reading and information boxes about all kinds of stuff. I offers five sentences for gay travelers but only a page and a half on dating and romance. That's more than the Thai version, but the Latin American Spanish one puts it to shame with four pages. I guess they are just being culturally sensitive and don't want to turn a bunch of college students lose with too much? the first page of Dating and Romance gives you - You're beautiful. You're sexy, Let's make love. Do you have a condom? Out of this world! Can I stay? I'll call you. Do you want to be my girlfriend? and a few others. The next page then gives you four ways to say dammit! and then I leave tomorrow, I'll miss you, Let's keep in touch, and This relationship isn't appropriate. And that's it. Pretty lame, I thought. Where's all the sweet talk while you're spending time with him/her? I took off a star for that. Still, it's the best phrasebook there is.

              4 out of 5 stars A pretty good phrasebook.......2001-12-09

If you are going to Indonesia and you feel you need a language guide, but you are not inclined to study the language by means of a graduated text book, you might like to consider this. You do get a very limited section on how the language works (ie grammar) but not enough to be really useful. What you do get of great value are subject grouped word lists and phrases that even include some of the colloquial language that you will encounter whilst on your travels.
However, I believe that this little book grows in usefulness if you are studying/have studied the basic language and you need something to enlarge your vocabulary and boost your communication power in Bahasa Indonesia. The word lists can be a great help in filling in the gaps that some basic courses might necessarily have left in vocaublary while aiming to teach you to use the structures of the language. In this way, this phrasebook can be very useful.
An Indonesian friend of mine who saw the cultural information in the book said that the author has definitely spent a lot of time in the country and has really done his homework! Some language courses completely neglect cultural information while they are concentrating on language (such as "Colloquial Indonesian" by Routledge) so in addition to the extra vocabulary, the cultural inforamtion you find here could really make a difference to your trip, as it is very easy for an unsuspecting westerner to make cultural gaffs and end up looking "sombong".
In short, if you just want a travel phrasebook and cultural guide, then this is a good choice.

              Book Description

"When someone we love dies, most of us do something to keep them from completely vanishing. We summon up memories of them, we talk about them, we visit their graves, we treasure photographs of them, we dream about them, and we cry, and for those brief moments they are in some way with us. But when my friend Joe Brainard died, I knew I was going to have to do something beyond all these."

So begins Ron Padgett's warm, conversational memoir-the unlikely and true story of two childhood friends, one straight and one gay, who grew up in 1950s Oklahoma, surprised their families by moving to New York City in search of art and poetry, and became a part of the dynamic community of artists and writers whose work continues to shape American culture.

Much of this intimate memoir is told in Joe's own direct and unforgettable voice. Dozens of letters, journal entries, poems, photographs, and artworks create a stirring portrait of the times-one that illuminates not only Joe Brainard's life and art, but the influence that his kindness and insight had on the lives of his contemporaries, including Alex Katz, Andy Warhol, Frank O' Hara, Joe LeSueur, Anne Waldman, John Ashbery, Kenward Elmslie, and countless other friends, lovers, and admirers.

As Ron Padgett generously shares his memories, he allows us all to get to know Joe Brainard, a truly great person who just happened to be a brilliant artist and poet. Above all, Joe is a gentle reminder that love, life, and art matter every second.

Poet Ron Padgett, the son of an Oklahoma bootlegger, grew up in Tulsa where he met Joe Brainard at the age of 6. His recent books include the memoir, Oklahoma Tough: My Father, King of the Tulsa Bootleggers and the collection of poems You Never Know.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent Memoir.......2005-04-11

Poet Ron Padgett is also an interesting biographer and knows how to tell a good story. In JOE he does a fine job in recounting the basic facts of Joe Brainard's life, and his arrangements and paragraphs are written with a poet's eye to detail and piquancy.

Everyone loves Brainard's art and his writing, and the difficulty insofar as I can see it is that the book loses a little something after Joe meets Kenward Elmslie and his career moves into high gear. As Padgett admits, his closeness to Joe began to unravel slightly at this juncture. (The two had been high school pals in Oklahoma and had moved to New York together, with the poets Dick Gallup and Ted Berrigan, from Tulsa very early in the 1960s.) Once Joe stops worrying about money, a little of the tension disappears from the story. Until then it has the high drama of a Dickens tale, even down to the story of Joe reduced to begging in the Boston streets and being too embarrassed actually to ask people for money. After his success, he goes to Vermont every summer, he can afford tables at the finest restaurants, he meets Jackie Onassis and Willem De Kooning, the whole nine yards of NY social success and eventually he stops painting.

His death from AIDS is briefly discussed. I have the feeling that Padgett did not want to make this into an AIDS story, and wanted instead to celebrate his gay friend's life and work, but as he admits many aspects of Joe's sexuality were occluded from himself and from Pat (Padgett's wife). Whenever Joe gets close to a woman he has fantasies about taking the next step into having sex with her, but this seems to have occurred seldom if at all. In the meantime he continues writing his book I REMEMBER and its many sequels and extensions, and launches into a longrunning affair with the actor Keith McDermott. Many other figures grace the book, including Andy Warhol and Frank O'Hara. Through every detail Padgett retains his equanimity, never letting the bathwater drown the baby. I wish he would write a memoir of all his friends (and relations, having enjoyed his book about his own father, a bootlegger and a real Oklahoma "character" like Curly or Jud.)

Many anecdotes, many insights, in "Joe." I love the tale of Padgett asking Joe, a notoriously hard person to shop for, what he would like for Christmas. Joe says, "Stairs. I don't like sitting in chairs, but I always like sitting on stairs, and I'd buy some, only I never see them for sale in shops." That would be charming enough, but then amazingly Padgett gets out his carpenters' tools and builds Joe a set of four stairs each about thirty inches wide and hauls them over to Joe's loft a few days before Christmas. It is this kind of affection and amazement that pervades this book and indeed, pervades our reading of Ron Padgett, no matter what he writes, poetry, memoir, translation.

It seems that on every page Joe is expressing his love for Pat and Ron by giving them painting after painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, you name it, they must have the world's biggest art collection. Good for them!
