Entertainment and education for everyone!.......2007-08-07
Now I know what some of those strange sounds are out there and WHO's making them! I enjoy listen to this in my car as I'm stuck in traffic. This CD and the book are both fun - young and old will enjoy them. My extremely active son and my more laid back mother both have enjoyed these. It's a winner!
I also purchased the Birds CD/Book and the Insects CD/Book. These, too, are an excellent purchase. The Insects CD actually put my son to SLEEP in the car!
Calling All Frogs!.......2005-08-12
The real value in this compact field guide is not in the very clear photos and descriptions, but is in the remarkably clear and useful recordings of amphibian calls. Since frogs and toads are active at night, they are generally identified by their calls - and this is the most useful guide I have obtained. Great addition to any naturalist's field guide collection!
excellent work on frogs of eastern and central US.......2002-12-17
...which is why the previous reviewer did not find the Pacific Treefrog...
What about Pacific Treefrog?.......2001-03-31
The CD is very well organized. The tone qualities are very good. As an amateur herpetologist, I deeply appreciate this audio archive of North American frogs and toads, especially the rana, bufo and hyla familes. Amphibians are going extinct and/ or disappearing rapidly from our planet. Mr. Elliot has compiled such an extensive audio library with great care and detail. All nature lovers and herpetologists must get this tape.
Nonetheless, Mr. Elliot failed to include the most widespread frog here in California... the Pacific Treefrog. This is the most well-known as the Hollywood frog. It is used widely to underscore background nature sounds in films.

Defective.......2007-10-13
I bought a book that comes with a CD: the CD is defective. It can no be played. I have written two letters asking what should I do. I want the product, but a need a CD that is not defective. No answer from Amazon.
I am very dissapointed. I am not buying another product until this matter is solved.
What goes bump in the night.......2007-04-29
If you live in the woods or country and are curious about what goes bump in the night, this book and CD will explain those noises. We kept hearing a wonderful creature but had no way to identify it. Turns out it was a screech owl (they don't hoot nor do they screech). This book has also helped identify several frogs & night birds. As a bonus, Lang has a very pleasant voice and the CD is well made.
Nice, but covers to large an area.......2006-01-12
It's nice to listen to in the car (for a while, at least). It's pretty useless, though, since the geographical area is not limited enough. There might be a couple of those 60 animals in your area, but about 50 of 'em won't be. This should be a series of CD's: one for the northeast, one for the southwest....and so on.
Soothing and informative.......2001-10-01
I love Lang Elliott's voice. It is very soothing and doesn't detract from the bird, reptile and insect sounds. I was able to identify a Horned Owl from the CD, so it is informative, too. The sounds are grouped on different tracks so it's easy to find the category you want, much better than a cassette tape.
Unique and wonderful nature guide by Lang Elliott.......2000-03-29
This is a truly special release from Lang Elliott, the author of numerous nature CDs and books (including the splendid "Music of the Birds" and "Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs.") On this compact disc (or cassette) and its accompanying booklet, he introduces the sounds of common North American night animals. To my knowledge, no one else has compiled a field guide to the sounds of night animals with sounds from many groups of creatures all in one place (i.e., birds, mammals, amphibians, etc.)
The recording is a constant delight and will probably make you aware of the source of many sounds you have heard but not identified before. Don't be surprised to say, "So THAT'S what that is" many times while listening to the tape or CD. Also be prepared for surprises. Think you hear cats fighting outside your window at night? They may be cats, but they also could be raccoons, which often sound remarkably like angry felines. That strange, ghostly hiss or scream you may have heard at night in the country? An angry cat perhaps, but it might be a barn owl. And there are many other special sounds identified here: the rhythmic calls of nightjars like the whippoorwill, the trills and croaks of amphibians, the surprisingly snort of the white-tailed deer.
If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you must have this guide. Take it on a camping trip with you, if you have a portable CD player or cassette player. Those night woods will not seem so forbidding anymore once you know that most of the time, the strange and fascinating sounds you hear are made by completely harmless creatures.

Book Description
An audio reference guide to the sounds made by 100 species of birds, mammals, frogs, and insects inhabiting the northwoods lake country wilderness. Includes a 60-minute audio cassette and 40-page booklet. Each northwoods species is identified by name on the audio, followed by superb examples of its calls. The companion booklet provides written descriptions of each species' sounds along with habitat information and other interesting facts. "Northwoods" is defined as the transitional area where northern hardwood forest gradually gives way to the boreal evergreen forest. In the United States, this region stretches from Maine to Minnesota and includes lake country as well as high mountains, open bogs, upland meadows, and dense forest. In Canada, the northwoods stretches from Manitoba to the Maritime provinces.
Customer Reviews:
Superb!!.......2000-10-07
This CD includes recordings of 100 species commonly heard in the north, including mostly birds, but also mammals, amphibians, and even an insect! Each selection is reasonably long and includes a variety of vocalizations, and the accompanying booklet is wonderful, clearly but simply explaining the contexts in which each sound is made. Lang Elliott scores another home run.
Book Description
Famed yacht designer and author L. Francis Herreshoff takes us on family style cruises in American waters, during which all sorts of boats and boating skills are explained while they are used. He tells about the adventures of the crews of the catboat Piscator, the ketch Viator, and the engineless whaleboat-style ketch Rozinante. There are anecdotes and examples and a wide variety of boat lore in each chapter, as well as adventures, races and coastwide cruises and historical harbors to visit.
Customer Reviews:
Now I have a better understanding of the term "classic" .......2007-03-22
I thought this was a wonderful book. It tells a simple story of people meeting up and going sailing, including a cruise of several days. In the process of telling this story, the author imparts a continuous stream of sailing knowledge throughout. I just completed a review of "Sea Steading", by FitzGerald, and just realized that these books have the same philosophy on sailing and opinion on powerboats. But, this book is more of a joy to read.
The Compleat Cruiser is a bit dated, written in the 50s I believe, which adds an interesting historical aspect. But, it is also a shame that the story isn't updated to reflect what we would find today in the locales described in the book. Read the book and then find a kid to give it to, you might create a sailor out of him or her.
entertaining and educational.......2006-12-05
this is a fun travel read that also explains fine points of cruising and boat handling for several boat types from a master of simplicity and directness.
the dovetailing of the information with the story is brillant and a LF Herreshoff masterpiece - as elegant as a rozinante!
Great Insight and Opinions.......2004-11-21
The primary purpose of the book is cruising advice and L. Francis Herreshoff shares some inginuity while covering topics such as cooking, exercise, ground tackle, paint, wood treatment, workshops, tenders, piloting...
Also like many great cruising yacht designers, Herreshoff is full of opinions. Here are a few examples:
On Exercise: "...the young American is too lazy to paddle...if they had taken a moderate ourdoor exercise like paddling, their nerves would be much more at rest and they would enjoy life more, and live longer."
On Power Boats: "We don't hate all power boats, only those modern freaks that look like the result of a collision between an automobile and a dining car...The motor boat designers have to design craft down to the taste of foolish and uncouth individuals...It's a shame that they are not compelled to anchor away from the yacht club for they spoil the looks of the waterfront."
Class: "...vacationing women whose desire to look risque had taken the place of wholesome feminie beauty."
I learned much from this entertaining book and will read it again.
The Compleat Cruiser.......2001-07-09
Originally written as a series of articles for THE RUDDER magazine during WW II, the abridged book-version is classic Americana. LFH manages to present a treasure chest of timeless yachting skills, while introducing the reader to the pre-multi-culti New England of his early 20th Century youth, a culture of genteel Yankee community in symbiotic relationship with a maritime inheritance of unpresendented abundance and beauty. If you want to learn the basics of pre-plastic messing about in good boats, while embarked on a time-capsule voyage to a bye-gone New England, still firmly in Yankee hands, this book will take you there. You will return with a ditty bag full of Herreshoff's life-experience, and eyes wide open, a budding student of the art of low-tech, high-touch cruising, a curiously-Yankee spiritual path of a transendant nature.
A look into the soul of cruising.......1999-04-07
This book is written as a story, but the plot elements really only exist in order to string together pieces of information in a fashion which is entertaining to read. Topics covered include how to make a proper chowder, how to launch a boat off the beach, binoculars vs. telescopes, a good bit of boating history, anchoring, and many, many others. Herreschoff is quite opinionated, and this book is definitely an antique, but it is good reading and much of what he writes still applies today.
Book Description
A classic in its field, THE COMPLEAT CRUISER is a comprehensive survey of boating that is a joy to all those who love the water.
L. Francis Herreshoff was a leading yacht designer and had wide experience cruising in small and large craft -- from canoes and dinghies to cup defenders. "Written with clarity and wit, The COMPLEAT CRUISER is an ideal companion both on and off the water." (B-O-T Editorial Review Board)

One of the most common problems facing ESL teachers is the advanced speaking class in which the most confident students dominate the discussion and the weaker students quickly withdraw. Discussion Starters is designed to balance the oral participation of all the students in the class and thus promote an environment in which everyone has not only a chance but a real need to speak out.
Each unit contains a relatively small number of exercises (usually around five) which provide speaking interaction about a central topic or idea. In most of these activities, students must work together in pairs or small groups to reach a conclusion about a topic. Other discussion books on the market today often use imaginary situations for discussion (e.g., "If you had a million dollars, what would you do?"). The activities and tasks in Discussion Starters are real situations from all over the world. When students are asked what they would do in a given situation or how a judge should rule in a case, all the material is real.
Naturally, teachers may assign additional readings to supplement the topics in Discussion Starters; however, there is ample background material in the text to start students on their way to a discussion. Thus, students can spend their class time speaking about and discussing topics rather than reading about them. A unique and important feature of this text is the inclusion of homework exercises that call on students to sort out their ideas and opinions before coming to class. This allows all students to be prepared for the speaking activities in class and is of special importance to the weaker, less confident non- native speakers.

Wow, this is a great book.......2005-05-20
I teach EFL to adult students at a company in China. This book has been really useful-- most of the topics work well here and the lessons are set up so that the students talk mostly to each other in pairs or small groups. I am seeing a lot of progress among the students, and they really like the discussion structure and topics. This book is making me look good. Highly recommended!
excellent book ! .......2004-08-03
This book is excellent for intermediate level English as a Second Language learners. It goes beyond the usual ESL textbook with chapters of conversations in typical situations. This text is good because it addresses the problems of the student who has studied English for awhile, an intermediate level student. For example, how can I start a conversation in various situations. The students using this book can learn to apply what they already know in a more free form situation, in everyday life.I am an ESL instructor and have been teaching ESL at the university level for over 20 years. I would suggest this book to my students. Need writing Help ? http://englishwritinghelp.com
Very good activities.......2003-02-15
Our ESL program for advanced adult speakers uses this book as a textbook in our conversation and fluency course, and as a supplement to all of our other courses. It provides great activities to get adult learners talking. The lessons are easy to adapt to your existing curriculum, or you can plan a course around them.

Great Light Reading.......2006-09-10
OK, I admit to being a bit of a snob. Not that I am in to high art, but I always liked to think of myself as above the new glut of mass market gay paperbacks. This series of books, and you should read all three, proves me wrong. They are well written and highly entertaining. I was compelled to move on from one book to the next, and was disappointed when I hit the end of the series.
Then came the real mindblower. At the back of this entry in the series, it comes out that the author of the book is actually authorS! Four of them who write together via mail. I wish I had known this before hand, as I would have looked for changes in voice - in retrospect, it all feels seamless.
Go for it, and have a good time.
Blaine and Daniel broke up?!?.......2006-06-17
This is the third book. I could not believe it when I was reading that Daniel and Blaine broke up. I think that this book is true to life in many ways. I can really see this happening in the gay world. Even my straight friends could related to it.
For a while I was mad at Blaine for not just telling Daniel how he felt. We go on this roller coaster ride with them. The part of the book that Daniel and Blaine go to the fundraiser that Blaines assistiant doesn't want him to go to made me cry. When the assistaint tells Daniel how much Princess 2DI4 ment to her. I felt like Daniel for a moment.
I hope that the writing team of Timothy James Beck get the chance to write more stories about these friends. I feel like it's about time that there are gay novels for adults to read that are filled with characters that we can relate to.
Time to Grow Up.......2006-03-25
Hunky, cocky Blaine found the love of his life -- and threw him away by over-reacting to some news his honey should have told him himself. Daniel plays his cards too close to his chest and lost his honey when he withheld important information he should have shared early on. They were both thoroughly guilty for the break-up: one made stupid, inaccurate assumptions when he heard part of the information his honey withheld from him. Both remained deeply in love with the other, but neither had the courage to say "I'm sorry" and bring about the reconciliation. I was so frustrated with the inability of either to start the inevitable conversation and the dependency of the plot line on neither communicating well. Yet, by the end of the book, I'd decided that it was better that they didn't reconcile quickly, because the pain and aloneness forced Blaine to grow up (as Daniel told him to do). One of the joys of the book (in addition to the final scenes) was watching Blaine learn about himself and grow to be a big enough man to deserve Daniel at the end. I look forward to the future books in this universe.
Sequel Not As Good.......2005-11-04
This book picks up where IT HAD TO BE YOU left off. As a sequel to IT HAD TO BE YOU, the author fleshed out the character Blaine Dunhill and made him the primary focus of the plot line. The saga of the star-crossed lovers, Daniel and Blaine takes an annoying turn in the story. Daniel and Blaine are alienated from each other, appear to have broken up as a couple, and are attempting to juggle their shared friends while proceeding with their own lives. Their effort to succeed on both fronts, friends and self, are confounded by a pregnancy, a wedding, an evil ex-wife, a wicked gossip columnist, and, unfortunately, the rather mercurial and explosive personality Daniel has devleoped. In the first book, Daniel was a very sympathetic figure; however, in this "episode" of the Daniel-Blaine love epic, Daniel becomes a character who is totally unlikeable. Blaine is, as I said earlier, "fleshed out", however his character becomes annoyingly tepid when dealing with Daniel.
I'M YOUR MAN does explore some interesting new areas such as gay parenting, corporate posturing, the soap opera "industry", transgenderism, and contemporary "coming out tactics". These areas were so engaging that I, as a reader, would like to see how they develop within the context of another sequel. It's time for Daniel-and-Blaine to "grow up", move beyond back biting and quibbling, and take on some of the areas eluded to earlier. I do believe if Mr. Beck writes another "episode" or "chapter" to this story, he will most assuredly have a winner.
Another enjoyable read.......2005-09-25
"I'm Your Man," the third book in Timothy James Beck's New York trilogy, is the story of Blaine Dunhill, a Manhattan advertising executive, and Daniel Stevenson, an up and coming TV actor. After a series of unfortunate misunderstandings, and regrettably nasty fights, they broke off their three year relationship. Blaine, still deeply in love with Daniel, is heartbroken.
Beck revisits many friends from the two previous novels, "It Had It Be You," and "He's the One." Gretchen, their lesbian financial planner friend, had decided she wanted to become a mother before her biological clock ran out. She knew that Blaine and Daniel had discussed the possibility of having children, and that Daniel had put the baby idea out of his mind because of his busy TV taping schedule. Gretchen knew that Blaine still wanted children, so she asked him to be her sperm donor. Blaine wasn't sure he was prepared for such a big step, but he and Gretchen both wanted the same thing--a father willing to be active in the child's life.
During a visit to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, his home town, Blaine sought the advice of friends, Adam and Jeremy. They reminded him that Gretchen was Daniel's friend first. How would Daniel feel about a child if there was the possibility of reconciliation? But, since he believed Daniel was no longer a part of his life, Blaine agreed. He and Gretchen decided not to tell their close knit group of friends about the baby until after the planned wedding extravaganza of their friends, supermodel Sheila, and photographer Josh.
Timothy James Beck's plot is full of twists and turns, starts and stops. The author is so adept at character development that we not only knew each character well, we even felt like we knew what they preferred to wear and eat. We knew where they lived and what their apartments looked like, though the author never wasted extra words on tedious descriptions. We readers experienced corporate board meetings, location photo shoots, and we walked the streets of Manhattan, absorbing its atmosphere.
"I'm Your Man," far more than a simple reading experience, is a visit with old friends Daniel, Blaine, Gretchen, Jeremy and Adam, and others. We experience their camaraderie as we root for Blaine and Daniel to reconcile, but will they?
Each of Timothy James Beck's novels is a complete and an enjoyable read in itself, but reading the novels in order of publication gives the reader insight into all the characters' backgrounds, and enhances the enjoyment of reading the three books. "I'm Your Man," is another grand slam of a novel-a highly recommended five star read."
For a fun experience, visit www.timothyjamesbeck.com and meet all the characters.

good mix of data and prescriptive exercises.......2007-07-24
It is fairly short. I read it in a couple hours. However, we'll definitely be going back through the book to do some of the exercises. I found the research useful and well presented. (Thanks for including many types of couples, non-cliche couples will not feel left out.)
I hope the exercises prove to be as useful.
I found the title off-putting, and it created a short-lived crisis in our house. But I think the book will work as "marriage enrichment" which is why I bought it (Not to announce that we were through, which is what the title implies.) So, prep your spouse that the book will be useful for helping you STAY together, and make the relationship better, then buy it and use it.

Hilarious!!!!!.......2006-12-12
I am going through a broken engagement with the person I thought was the love of my life. This book has helped me soooo much in the past month...it made me realize I am not crazy! The cartoons are so funny and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is going through a break-up.
Waste of money.......2006-05-18
There is nothing in this book that will help a truly broken-hearted person feel better. It's a bunch of childish cartoons and advice. I really wish I hadn't purchased it. There are much better books out there for the broken-hearted: It's Called a Breakup Because It's Broken; The Girl's Guide to Surviving Break Ups; Extreme Break Up Recovery; Don't Call That Man. Buy one of those instead!
Funny.......2006-03-03
I got this book awhile after my breakup, when I was able to laugh about it. Love the book. Very amusing.
Hilarious!.......2005-12-18
This isn't a serious self-help book, but definitely one to read when you're at the tail-end of your break-up and can actually laugh at ridiculousness of it. I read this at Borders, and my friend and I were lauging it up in the aisles. The stick-figure illustrations are really cute and funny, but if you've just broken-up and are still very sore, maybe wait on getting this one. Otherwise, if you want to laugh at all your own crazy antics post break-up, this will have you rolling on the ground. I'm definitely buying this one!
Not at all useful. .......2005-11-07
This book is basically a count from 1 to 100 of things (both could and bad) that people could possibly do after a break up. It's obviously meant to just be funny and not as an actual self-help book for people who have recently broken up. The sad part is that it is not actually that funny. This is one of the few books that I have bought during my lifetime that I returned.
