Customer Reviews:
Great stories with detailed analysis of what went wrong.......2007-09-13
This book is loaded with well told, detailed stories of paddling gone awry. Each story is followed by an instructive analysis of the situation--how the paddlers misjudged the conditions, how they might have avoided equipment failure, what training might have helped the situation, etc. It's all laid out in very practical terms that you could put to use yourself. Amongst the stories are numerous sidebars with more information on techniques and equipment that are also useful, but much drier. My only criticism is that the book has not been updated. Most of the stories are from the mid-eighties and while the principles of kayaking haven't changed, available equipment continues to evolve. In summary, a fun book to read full of useful information for any sea kayaker.
Good Information, Out of date stories. .......2007-03-17
The stories in this book had some real value to them and any beginner would see the value in reading about the unfortunate disasters of others. However, I was disappointed that most of the recent events talked about happened between 1984 thru 1994, almost 13-23 years ago. Sea Kayaking has come a long way since then, but none the less, the events the book talks about are important valuable lessons to those beginners just starting out in the sport.
Lessons are not hard to learn.......2006-08-08
Deep trouble recounts the stories and reports of 20 kayaking incidents which range from death (often with sketchy information as you would imagine) to mild hypothermia to extraordinary feats of endurance and survival.
Unfortunately I found a majority of the incidents were the result of either total novices `in over their heads' or total stupidity. Kayaking in shorts and a tee shirt in 10degrees water and 20knot winds with no pfd; the lessons are not hard to learn. Also many of the lessons from each incident were the same, how many times should we read to dress for immersion and wear a pfd?
However, of the 20 cases presented, one or two were noteworthy, others included elements of interest, and some of the comments from the `pros' was useful.
The formatting - which includes simultaneous commentary with the incident report - didn't work for me at all (others report here that they like it, go figure).
I expected more from this book (I have always wanted to read 'Total Loss' the equivalent book about sailing) but it just wasn't aimed at me. The target audience must be novice kayakers who don't wear a pfd; if you are in that audience buy this book.
A guide of what not to do........2006-08-05
If you are new to this sport or an experienced paddler, this book can provide valuable insight on how to stay out of trouble and what to do, or not do if you find yourself in trouble.
excellent information.......2006-06-20
As a newby kayaker, I find this book to be highly
useful, if a bit intimidating. Hopefully, by reviewing
these incidents, I can be less of a potential danger
to myself and burden to others.
One negative: the quality of the binding of this book is
truly abysmal. It literally disintegrated in my hands
as I was reading it.

Clear, concise and complete. Excellent.......2004-08-06
I've found this book really invaluable. It's explanations are very clear, and everything is arranged as numbered steps to make it easy to remember. There are also photographs for every step, so you can build up a complete picture of the technique being described. There's no waffle or padding - everything is concise and to the point.
Their coverage is also very complete, with lots of useful variations and alternatives, but still presented without confusing those looking for the basic technique.
I've been studying this book for a year now, and I still find myself going back to it. I would recommend it to any sea kayaker.
Must read for all kayakers.......2001-06-15
I have just read my copy of "Sea Kayak Rescue -- The Definitive Guide to Modern Reentry and Recovery Techniques" by Roger Schumann and Jan Shriner. And like their classes, it is outstanding.
Everything is covered from basic paddle float reentry to the "Hand of God" rescue. And it is written in a straight foward style with plenty of photos to make things clear. It even includes some real-life stories.
There is also plenty of basic information about safety, equipment and skills.
Anyone who paddles anywhere, from flat lakes to the raging sea can find something to learn in this book, so it is a must read for everyone.
Book Description
Veteran sea kayaker John Lull provides you with a wealth of useful information to increase your safety and performance on the water. Rescues that work in the real world of wind and rough water are covered in detail with accompanying photos. In addition, the book takes a very comprehensive look at all the safety issues that affect sea kayakers in a multitude of environments, ranging from inland waterways to tide rips, ocean rock gardens, and the surf zone--information that may save a life!
Customer Reviews:
Basic kayak safety for the outer coast.......2007-08-23
This is the premier book on kayak safety for those venturing to the outer coast -- in my case for Alaska and BC coasts. It deals with rescues, rock gardens, breaking waves, surf landings etc. To the best of my knowledge, this book is the best of its kind.
Much needed.......2006-11-08
Although there are a few similar books that focus on Sea Kayaking safety; this author's approach is my favorite. He approaches the subject from the perspective of managing risk rather than "being safe". In other words, he takes a real world approach to being out on the water where things are rarely "cut-and-dry". There are plenty of introductory level books, some with useful information for intermediate paddlers willing to look for it. Lull's work is clearly intended for the paddler who wants to develop their skills and "sea sense". I recommend this book to any intermediate sea kayaker.
A Must Have Book.......2006-07-10
A great comprehensive book about the skills required to safely Sea Kayak in just about any conditions. Well written, easy to follow explanations and pictures on the skills of rescues, rolling, strokes, "reading" the water and Weather, essential equipment....basically everything every kayaker needs to be safe on the water.
Novices and experienced kayakers will find valuable information in this book. Read through it in a few hours and can't wait to get out and practice!!
A Great Newbie Kayaker Book.......2005-08-13
I am a new to kayaking with only beginning classes under my belt and 12 hours on mostly flat water. Living is the SF Bay area there is lots of water close at hand. Plenty of afternoon wind as well. As a newbie John Lull's book has been great. I really like how John breaks the water down into domains. As he goes through the characteristics of each domain he lists the "Skills Needed" to be successful in that domain. His first chapter "Building A Safety Foundation" has a great section on managing fear. I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about the sport of sea kayaking. It is a must read. It's an enjoyable read as well.
A Must Read for Sea Kayakers.......2002-03-01
This is the best safety and rescue book with a wealth of information every boater should know. A must read, re-read and own it for reference.
Book Description
From two of Canada's premier sea kayaking instructors and the leading magazine of the sport comes the ideal book for any paddler wanting to venture safely beyond sheltered waters. This essential handbook shows how to understand weather, waves, and currents; use emergency communications; analyze risk; and perform a wide variety of kayak rescues.

Book Description
Like Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler, Sara Paretsky and Thomas Harris, you, too, can learn the trade secrets of quality detective fiction.
It's true. Just one year from now, you can deliver a completed mystery novel to a publisher--by writing only on weekends. Authors Robert J. Ray and Jack Remick guide you through the entire mystery-writing process, from creating a killer to polishing off the final draft. Each weekend you'll focus on a specific task--learning the basics of novel-writing, the special demands of mystery-writing, and the secrets professionals use to create stories one scene at a time, building to a shivery, satisfying climax. Using Agatha Christie's The Body in the Library as a model for the classical mystery tale and Martin Cruz Smith's Gorky Park for the hard-boiled mystery, this unique step-by-step program gives you all the information you need to reach your ultimate goal: a finished book in just 52 weeks!
Let two successful masters of the genre show you how...
Discover:
Why you must create your killer first
The tricks to writing dialogue that does it all--moves your plot, involves your reader, and makes your style sizzle
How to "bury" information (and corpses) for your reader to find
Why you should NOT build your book around chapters
Special techniques for clearing writer's block
Plus: examples from Sue Grafton, Dashiell Hammett, Patricia Cornwell, Thomas Harris, Raymond Chandler, and more.

Weekend novelist? Probably not........2004-05-05
Writing fiction is like painting a landscape. A lot of artists can do it, and each one has an individual way they do it. It is the same with writing. Many people have written good novels; each one approaches it differently. So when someone like Ray Robert tells you how it's done, don't believe him. I'm not saying that his method doesn't work for him. What I am saying is it probably won't work for you. (It didn't work for me.) You have to figure out what works for you. Check out Immediate Fiction by Jerry Cleaver. You won't regret it.
If you only get one book...........2003-10-17
This was the single most helpful book I found to help complete the process of writing an entire mystery. Its most valuable section is on plotting, devoting the appropriate amount of time and space to each of the critical parts of a novel. Much of the advice here is to be found else where--the back story, the characters, the scene writing--but is better organized and more comprehensible in this volume. So, if you plan to only buy or use one book on writing, this is the one I believe would be the best place to concentrate your time and money.
Very Good.......2003-05-16
I bought this book to learn more about creating a suspenseful story (not necessarily a traditional mystery novel). It was successful in that respect, but the biggest benefit I reaped was all the help in plotting (a weakness of mine). High recommended.
like taking a college course.......2002-04-29
Great book! It's like taking a college course, with each weekend like a class, with excersizes. A must read if you're having trouble with the structure of your novel, or if you've gotten stuck.
Only downside: lots of reference to books you are meant to read; if you haven't read them it gets confusing. This book largely uses examples taken from other mysteries.
So if you have some time and need some serious help with your mystery novel, this is The Book!
Want to write a mystery?.......2001-09-05
Do you love to read mystery novels? Ever thought you'd like to try writing one, but had no idea where to start?
Here's your answer.
Using weekends as units of preparation and work, Ray and Remick lay out a clear, simple plan for writing a mystery novel from blank pages to a rewritten, polished final draft in 52 weekends. Even if you haven't written anything since high school, you'll have all the tools you need in this wonderful book: where to find character ideas, exactly which characters are needed, their relationships, plotting, how to handle red herrings- it's all here.
The authors are clearly experienced writers and teachers who lead you, step by step, through the creation and shaping of a mystery novel. Enjoy.
Customer Reviews:
Save Your Money.......2007-06-06
I bought this book on the basis of its good reviews and the prospect of learning how to break the novel writing process into easy-to-manage chunks. I'm not sure *why* this book has the good reviews it does. Very often while reading it, I could envision the author pacing back and forth in an imaginary college classroom, gesticulating wildly as he (eventually) made his point. While that speaks for a strong voice for a novelist, it's not at all what I want from a writing guide.
The author pulls examples from several novels, which the reader is urged to have on hand as "models". 'Buy these books,' we're told, 'or get them from the library.' There are no less than five "model" novels, and *twelve* 'referenced' novels. Useful reference books for writers, like 'The Elements of Style', 'The American Heritage Book of English Usage', 'The American Heritage Collegiate Dictionary' and 'The Chicago Manual of Style' are added at the bottom, after such questionable additions as 'The Screenwriter's workbook' (I thought this book was for *novel* writing?), 'The Woman's Dictionary of Symbols and Sacred Objects' and 'The Wordsworth Book of Opera'.
This book seems to operate on the assumption that the reader 'wants to write a novel,' but has no idea as to who the main character is (or even the gender of the character!), the most basic elements of a plot, or the kind of story s/he wants to tell. The exercises are pointless (observe people in the library, in a cafe, in a public place, write down a series of descriptions, then pick your protagonist from there, or write a dream a character has, regardless of whetheh that dream will have any purpose in the story, or guidelines for dressing your characters and snooping in their closets).
The 'spinning down the page' technique is really just a condensed version of the 'morning pages' from Julia Cameron's "The Artist Way"--which is *not* included in the useful books list. Again and again, the reader is refered to other authors as examples, showing the end result, but not the route taken. The most baffling statement is in the 'Dressing Your Character' chapter: "The best way to get meaning is through repetition: work boots, work boots, work boots." Gibberish, gibberish, gibberish, is more like it.
There *are* good points to "Weekend Novelist": keeping thorough character files, the idea that characters are more than names and physical descriptions, brainstorming, quirks, the importance of backstory, and different methods of plotting, and using more than one protagonist.
These few things do not make up for the preachy tone, the endless tangents, and the statement of the obvious as if it were divine revelation (Read! Then read some more!) This is not the book to use if you want to write genre fiction, though Robert J. Ray is a mystery writer. The advice here seems better suited to mainstream, glitz, or chick-lit novels. If that's your goal, this may work better for you. Then again, if you know what you want to write, you'll have to skip the first third of the book before you get to anything useful. $16.95 is too much to pay for so little.
The Improved Edition.......2007-05-04
After reading the Amazon reviews of THE WEEKEND NOVELIST, I sent for both editions to judge for myself why several of the reviewers extol the first edition over the second.
Robert J Ray, the first edition's sole author, focuses on the fiction-writing craft of one novel, making the book readly accessible. (The novel chosen is Anne Tyler's THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST, which I found to be delightfully evocative.)
In collaboration with Bret Norris, Robert Ray, in the second edition, focuses on the fiction-writing craft of five contemporary novels, making the book more substantial. New to this edition are exercises the co-authors have skillfully adapted from techniques of screenwriting, offering the reader a fuller range of narrative craft. Moreover, the second edition includes a developing work-in-progress, "Trophy Wives," that illustrates interlinked exercises.
The five novels discussed are: THE ALCHEMIST by Paulo Coehlo; AMSTERDAM by Ian McEwan, THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER AND CLAY by Michael Chabon, WHITE TEETH by Zadie Smith; THE NAMESAKE by Jhumpa Lahiri. (NAMESAKE has been recently filmed by the award-winning director, Mira Nair.)
The final chapter in the second edition, "The Weekend Novelist Writes a Screenplay," includes suggestions on how to reduce your novel draft to a feature-length screenplay.
Although the book's title says it's designed for the weekend novelist, the format for 52 weekends or 104 sessions, each for three hours, can be compressed to a 6-month schedule. (I hope.)
Several of the Amazon reviewers said the second edition is not accessible. Access, I believe, will not be an issue for those who have read the basics of fiction-writing craft presented in books such as Janet Burroway's IMAGINATIVE WRITING: The Elements of Craft (See my Amazon reviews of Burroway's and similar books.)
The second edition is indeed "new and improved."

Totally agree - Get the original.......2006-07-15
I've owned both editions and I totally agree with previous reviewers about preferring the original version. The older version analyzes one book ("The Accidental Tourist") that is easy to get new or used, and won't eat too significantly into time you should be writing instead of reading. The newer version analyzes several books which starts to look more like a book on literary criticism rather than on the writing process. The original is much more process-oriented, since the goal of the reader of this specific book is to get words on the page, not just broaden the amount of novels on the shelf.
Overall, I was disappointed. I thought the newer version was long-winded with lots of unnecessary filler that hindered more than helped. Get the original. It's worth it.
AN EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR THE LOST .......2006-06-12
I bought this book in 1999. I never would have made it through my first novel without this roadmap. I was totally lost, just an idea and a half-cooked plot rolling around my imagination. There are few books out there that can hold a writer's hand and guide them step-by-step through the process of writing a first (or second or third) novel. This one does. I recommend it to everyone.
Buy the original, the revised edition is terrible.......2005-08-21
The beauty of the ORIGINAL edition of this book is its simplicity and its straightforward style. It was/is the ultimate how to write a novel if you also have to have a day job guide.
This second edition is full of hot air! It's laden with jargon and complex diagrams, assumes the reader knows way too much. Concedes completely that writers should adjust their vision because today's readers have been corrupted by TV and film. I STRONGLY disagree with the shift in focus from character to plot. I too will hang on to my worn copy of the original.
Don't bother buying this one. It's not worth the money.

"Bella woke up one morning and realized she'd had enough." So begins the triumphant tale of one woman's personal vendetta against a world of peeping toms, rapists, and obscene phone-callers.
Customer Reviews:
Deliciously dopamine-producing revenge story.......2006-05-03
It's been shown in psychological studies that revenge increases dopamine and other chemcials that induce a happier state. You don't have to be a psychologist to know it feels really good when someone gets their comeuppance either.
This is probably my favorite revenge story. Zahavi is poetic and plays with the sound of words on the tongue. The writing is rythmic, building with each new task the main character, Bella, accomplishes. In the book Bella is given a choice - to either continue being a lamb or become a lion.
Delciously devious at times too, this book shows the other side of being a victim - when the victim stops the world and starts turning it. Highly suggested reading for someone in the mood for some revenge.
shocking.......2005-12-01
I was pleased and disturbed at the same time by Helen Zahavi's "Dirty Weekend".
Thrilled that yes finally a woman takes control of the abuse she suffers at the hands of men. She lets us know how we take for granted the fact that we can't go outdoors at night alone, how we are unspoken prisoner's of our homes and then not even safe there.
Disturbed by the graphic violence, yes. I would like to see more books where women take charge but not in such a violent way.
I think there is a Bella in all of us and hopefully we don't get battered enough that she has to come out.
Bella is bad - and I loved it!.......2005-08-24
This isn't a light story about a woman who decides to get even with men. There are no cute pranks, or funny tricks that the character pulls on the men around her. This is dark stuff, and I loved watching Bella spiral into a realm of curiously controlled yet out of control behavior that provided no return. Even though she's a loner verging on being an outcast, and isn't especially likeable, Bella had me rooting for her. Bella represented every woman who felt at the mercy of those around her, who wanted to rise up and take control even if it means acknowledging her dark side. This story isn't for the faint of heart, Bella chooses a pistol over pranks, it is an amazing story of how one woman hit her limit, and wasn't going to take it any more.
For the Bella Within Us All...............2004-05-13
This is one of my all-time favorite books. It was recommended to me years ago by a British friend, with an arched eyebrow and a knowing look. Once I found it and read it, I knew why.
This book is only for those with a dark sense of humour, and a willingness to look unflinchingly at the underbelly of misogyny and its repurcussions. It is a work of fiction, but oh, how many of us wish we could have our own Dirty Weekends!
What some of the book's detractors may fail to realize is that Bella only metes out justice to those men who assault/invade/abuse her; the predatory neighbor, the wolverine punter in the car park, etc....she never goes looking for trouble; rather, it comes to her and she spits in its ugly face.
To understand this book, you must understand (and, mostly likely, have first hand experience) with the way in which women are constantly deluged with the inappropriate (at best) and predatory (at worst) attentions of unsavory men. By the time most women are 21, they have been subjected to everthing from catcalls, obscene phone calls, being grabbed, being humiliated, and even being raped - with very little public acknowledgement of this subjugation, and continued messages to men that this is acceptable behavior (not rape, of course, but other types of unsolicited attention). The natural result of this is RAGE.
Of course, nice girls do not angry. Nice girls do not raise their voices. Nice girls do not make a fuss. And nice girls certainly do not bludgeon their neighbors with hammers. Except. Bella does. And we stand by and cheer Bella on. Bella, who's had enough.
Not a bedtime story, or one to read before dinner........2003-04-23
I completely enjoyed this book, and have a secret case of Bella-envy. All throughout this quick read are little hints with which people, though I would say mostly women, can identify or even find their point of difference.
If you are lucky enough not to have experienced violence in your life you may find it hard to see past the brutality of much of the story. An abused dog will bite, what should we expect of a maltreated woman?
Zahavi creates a murky world in which everyone and everything is a threat to Bella; people, words, even the environment works against her. The plot moves quickly without requiring excuses for itself.
All in all I think this book is thought provoking, empowering, dismaying and sobering all at the same time.

I Really Like This Series.......2006-02-20
I appreciate the authors' dedication to research and development as well as the variety of this collection of recipes. I don't miss photographs, because the recipe descriptions are well-written and inspire my imagination. I have tried three recipes from this book, and all have turned out great. Savory Fig Tart and Cranberry Margaritas were huge hits at my Christmas cocktail party. (Tip: Make two rectangular fig tarts rather than one large square one. They will be easier to serve and eat.) Shrimp Baked with Tomato Sauce and Feta Cheese went over very well at a potluck supper. I mean to try several other recipes as well.
Collected Country's Recipe Output.......2005-03-19
Culling the newspapers, magazines, books and Net for recipes to cover range of standardized categories of appetizers, soups, salads, etc. is no easy task. Then to cover diversity of ethnicity, difficulty, etc. is daunting as well. Cut is always tough of what's in, what's out.
Nice job of providing range of easy and quick to exotic and time/ingredient/equipment consuming. There are recipes that will be luscious yet easy and simple to prepare or the more challenging, multi-layered creations.
Enjoy their inclusion of: Mango and Lime Chiffon Cake; Rick Bayless' Chocolate Pecan Pie Bars; Glazed Pearl Onions with Mustard and Brown Sugar; Three-Way Pork Burgers; Millionaire's Brisket with Coffee and Beer Mop Sauce; Tomato, Goat Cheese and Focaccia Pudding; Moroccan Herb Salad; North African Tomato Bulgur Soup; Chilled Potato-Chive Soup.

I was very excited to recieve this book but so far the recipes have fallen short. It's probably a very difficult task to compile a collection like this but there is a lot here that is very average.
