A Really Super Book About Squirrels
ASIN: 1555661521 |
Book Description
A combination of illustrated field guide, fact book, and folklore collection, "Squirrels" is a new kind of wildlife book. This concise, illustrated handbook presents an accurate, informative portrait of squirrels in their natural habitat, along with an examination of their relationship to man.
Most Americans live in cities. The closest many get to wildlife is observing animals in parks and yardsthe favorite habitat of the tree squirrel. Yet for all of the frequency with which they are observed, squirrels and their behavior are little understood. What do squirrels eat? How do they keep their food caches from spoiling? What is the most aggressive squirrel? Are there any squirrel-proof bird feeders? What role did squirrels play in ancient mythology?
From social interactions with early American culturesboth Native Americans and European settlersto their role in local ecosystems, "Squirrels" provides animal lovers with the complete picture.

"Squirrels" is an excellent source of information for the truly curious. It is well organized and full of well done graphics, effectively covering such things as nesting and mating habits, diet, and reproduction. The size of the book makes it easy to carry along on road and camping trips.
squirrels are our friends.......2001-12-14
My husband just gave me this book after I talked about how much I enjoy watching squirrels in our neighborhood and that I wanted to learn more about them. I haven't read the entire book yet, but so far it is very interesting. Sometimes the everyday things in our world can be the most fascinating.
A good squirrely book.......2000-05-24
This book is useful as a reference work for the backyard wildlife enthusiast. I maintain a web site about squirrels, and I often refer to my copy to answer online questions from people around the world. My only criticism is that some of the artwork is not entirely realistic. Some of the drawings have the squirrels' heads shaped more like a seal than a rodent.

Sometimes, says Dan Hershey, author of The Critter Control Handbook, you just have to face up to it: it's them or us. Sure, bats are singularly interesting and do their helpful bit in the food chain by dining on pesky insects. Unfortunately, they can also roost in attics and chimneys, leave parasite-infested guano around and, incredibly, even do widespread vehicle damage at car dealerships. Cottontail rabbits damage gardens and fruit trees, snapping turtles gobble ducklings, deer destroy entire commercial crops. Then, of course, there are vermin....
What to do? Hershey acknowledges the full range of practical, ethical, and legal considerations when it comes to repelling or killing pests of all kinds, and his recommendations range from the conservative (grow plants unappealing to specific animals) to common sense measures (don't put "islands" in the middle of your pond if you don't want waterfowl there) to the extreme (get a hunting permit). The author isn't shy about suggesting controversial deterrents, e.g., toxic chemicals or leg traps; he does, however, caution the reader to be fully aware of wildlife protections and environmental laws peculiar to one's community. Though packed with information, the Handbook's content is streamlined and accessible, with concise guides, bite-size tips, helpful photos, and no-nonsense text. Dealing with pests is an uncomfortable fact of life; Hershey helps us shoulder the burden with the benefit of his experience. --Tom Keogh

GREAT book.......2003-10-01
Thank goodness someone came out with a practical guide. These people that scream 'rehabber!' are usually either rehabbers, or happy to sacrifice the baby squirrel to their almighty esoteric beliefs. The reality is, there might NOT be a rehabber in your area, or, if there is, they may not be able to give the baby the time and attention that it will need to survive. GET THIS BOOK!
Killing the baby squirrel.......2001-06-16
Really a bit off base... If you had just found a baby squirrel you would not generally have the necessary items around the house to take care of a baby squirrel.... You most likely are doing it more harm by trying to treat it (other than getting it warm - around 1-2 degrees higher than your normal body temp) take it to a rehabber... get online to get the closest rehaber near your... just type in squirrel in the address and it will find you a dozen locations to find you a rehabber...

Mule Deer Hunting (The Complete Hunter)
ASIN: 1592282040 |
Book Description
Deer hunting has often been termed difficult, humbling, and ceremonial. This is because to do it correctly, a hunter has so much to learn-including learning about mule deer habitats, and how deer use those habitats at different times of the year, and under diverse conditions.
Found within the pages of The Complete Guide to Mule Deer Hunting is a wealth of solid, useful information on hunting tactics, as well as mule deer habits and habitats from which the reader will greatly benefit on his next trip to the West.
Like the soft-heeled step of a still-hunter Sam Curtis writes with a fine
balance between an instructional how-to voice and light-hearted humor. With detailed photography and step-by-step illustrations, as well as comprehensive practical advice and encouragement throughout, this book will remain a classic reference on the subject for years to come.

deer hunting tactics.......2006-12-24
I bought it as a gift & he really liked it
Overpriced information........2006-11-18
Although I generally believe in the axiom of "you get what you pay for", this book by Sam Curtis is an expensive lesson in exceptions to that rule. It is not so much that the book is really bad, it's just not very good. He does provide a lot of legitimate information on the biology of the mule deer and its habitat, but many of the conclusions he draws about tactics for hunting them are suspicious at best. I lived in Montana for 15 years and I have hunted extensively in many of the same areas Curtis talks about in the book, . He make HUGE generalizations about mule deer behavior which are supported by a few flimsy observations in the field. Many of these I have found to be arguable at best, and purely wrong at worst. This pattern goes on and on in the book. There are several books that are great resources for the serious mule deer hunter; this is not one of them.
An excellent book.......2006-03-31
I think Sam Curtis' book is excellent for several reasons. First, Curtis provides an extensive examination of mule deer hunting in different togographical regions. He analyzes how to hunt muleys in foothill/mountain regions, on the Great Plains, in coulees, in alpine areas, and elsewhere. Readers will likely find information relevant to their particular hunting region. Second, Curtis draws on both many years of personal experience as well as professional biological research. The combination provides a nice balance between ancedote and objective facts. Third, Curtis explains a number of very practical tactics to use when hunting muleys in a variety of situations. I found his advice on how to pursue spooked mule deer very helpful. Fourth, the book is clearly written. Finally -- and perhaps most importantly -- Curtis communicates not just disparate facts and tactics about mule deer hunting, but *understanding* of mule deer and their environment -- what their habits are, how they respond to varoius weather patterns and dynamics, how they react to hunting pressure, how bucks function in rut and non-rut times, how they use topography, what their core habitat is, and so on. So many hunting books today are largely 'how to' books; they do not take the extra step of communicating a mentality or cognitive strategy about how to think. Curtis does this admirably. I enjoyed this book as much as I did Dwight Schuh's Hunting Open-Country Mule Deer.

Customer Reviews:
Boring.......2002-03-01
For me, the book just doesn't flow comfortably. It seems to be a curious mix of triviality and abstruseness. It's not an academic kind of book, but somehow it reminds me of all the boring English teachers I had in school. Maybe it's the small type and compactness. Perhaps it's the bland layout of the text. The contents are accurate enough, but the tutorial explanations seem ---ironically --- ponderously written and the exercises are really boring. It's cheap enough, I suppose, and if one's writing is in desperate need of help, it might be useful to buy it. Truly though, "thirty minutes a day" might be me more time than one is willing to put into it. Don't even consider buying it for a normal teen or preteen. An adult might better tolerate its boring format. There are probably other, equally inexpensive, sentence writing books that are more interesting.
Help your sentences communicate what you want to say!.......2000-08-27
"Developing solid writing skills is not a matter of luck; it's a matter of hard work and practice," states Dianna Campbell, author of Better Sentence-Writing in 30 Minutes a Day. There are a lot of writing and grammar books available in the English language; this example is a superior approach, with a workbook format included in the study and practice of sharpening each sentence into a clear, respectable means of communication. A number of people struggle with creating interesting, yet grammatically true sentences and paragraphs. This tool offers instruction, numerous interesting samples to visualize excellent sentences, and the work that is needed to internalize the components of good sentence writing. Even if you only have 5 minutes a day for developing your writing skills, this is the book that will guide you to becoming a superior sentence writer.

I read a review and it inspired me to say that on the cover it states: "-for anyone else who wants to improve their written communcations..." >To me communication should never be plural(it is an non-coutable noun.
Better Grammar in 30 Minutes.......1999-12-29
This book was a great help. The short chapters are broken down into subchapters followed by exercises. The book is clear, direct and easy to follow.
It covers many terms and rules I remembered hearing in school, but didn't grasp. They are presented in a format that I could study on my own; I use it as a quick reference when I'm not sure of something.
It's great as a remedial book and in the same category as Painless Grammar.
A very good book!.......1999-11-07
This is a very good book, no matter what the "reader from Maryland" says below ... s/he is just simply _wrong_ about grammar - the phrase on the cover is perfectly correct. This is really a very useful book. You won't regret it if you buy it.
There's a grammar error on the cover.......1999-05-11
I find it hard to take seriously a book that has a grammar mistake on the cover of the book. Notice, if you will, the third bullet on the cover -- the one that says "For anyone else who wants their written communications to be more powerful and professional." Every grammar book I've ever read, including "Bedford's Handbook for Writers," tells me that indefinite pronouns are singular. In other words, it should have read "For anyone else who wants his written communications to be more powerful and professional." If you don't like to use he because of political correctness, you can always say anyone else who wants his or her. Anyway, it doesn't make me very confident of the ability of a book to improve my grammar when the editor cant catch a simple mistake on the cover.

Better Vocab. in 30 Min. a Day.......2004-08-06
I thought that this book was very helpful. It covers a wide range of words, and as soon as I tried the exercises that it provides, I found that it was really easy afterwards to use the words to spice up my essays and book reports at school.
Good book to fine tune your vocabulary.......2000-04-09
This book, from the Better English Series, is a fairly decent book for businessmen to sharpen their vocabulary. Although some of the words may already be in the vocabulary of middle to high level businessmen, it reinforces those, as well as clearly teaching new words through its 30 minute program (which I find, one can finish in about 15 minutes). The vocabulary presented covers a broad range of words, and the book is overall a straight-ahead, no-nonsense guide for businessmen, as well as for people of occupations in which an expanded vocabulary is beneficial to their job.

Book Description
From the American Revolution to World War Two, the history of the military combat marksman is one of indifference, unpreparedness and cost cutting. Despite the proven effectiveness of the rifleman in battle, the sniper in the 20th century has been regarded as little more than a paid assassin, whose life if captured was forfeit. However, since the Vietnam War the undeniably effective use of such men in combat means that the value of the sniper has gradually become more appreciated by the military, and their prominence on the modern battlefield has increased significantly. In the 21st century they are now regarded as one of the most vital battlefield specialists.
Illustrated throughout with colour and black and white photographs, this is a chronological study of snipers, detailing their evolution, training, weaponry and actions. There are also unique contributions from the men and women whose skill and extraordinary courage have made them the most greatly feared specialist in warfare.
From the Foreword by Harry Furness, decorated Sniper-Sergeant, British Army Wold War II
We will always need to deploy our new age warrior, that highly trained specialist, the military sniper....
Factual books on snipers are few and far between, so I find it refreshing and timely that this new book has been published which will provide the reader with the true facts about these unique soldiers; and readers of this excellent, deeply researched book will now be more knowledgeable about a rarely discussed subject. You have to dig deep to bypass the many half truths in order to reach any conclusion as to why manking continues to wage wars that kill off the cream of our young society, but it might be said that if it is the fate of a soldier to die in battle, then a sniper's swift killing bullet must be preferable to dying from devastating wounds.
Chapter Heads The sniper in perspective. The rifleman emerges 1500-1854. The American Civil War and European wars 1854-1914. The First World War, the watershed 1914-16. The First World War, the fight back 1916-18. Russian sniping 1936-45. The German sniper and the war with Russia 1941-45. The war against Japan 1941-45. The war in Western Europe 1940-45. Limited wars 1945-85. Vietnam, America's nemesis. Into the 21st century.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting book.......2005-04-12
I'm about 3/4 done reading this book and can recommend it to anyone interested in military history. It is not at all a "how to" book, but more a history of how snipers have been used in war since the development of the rifled barrel.
There is a ton of detail about the rifles used and the scopes that were mounted on them. In a few places it gets a little tedious, but the author has obviously done his homework.
Not an exciting book by any stretch, but you do feel like you've learned something at the end.
Knowing more about sniper.......2005-02-01
Being involved in shooting, I have always been fascinated by these persons we call Sniper. Out of Nowhere is a very large book, full of photos of famous and other not so famous snipers and their personal histories. This is a great book if you want to know all about Sniper and Riflemen history.
This is not a "how to", but a great book about what is Sniping and it evolution through time.
I strongly recommend it.
A "Must Have" Book!.......2005-01-04
This book is amazing! I have other books by Pegler and have never been disappointed by his product. The topic of Military Snipers is a touchy one that has been maligned in the mainstream press for many years. Even the term "Sniper" is thought of with negative thoughts be it terrorist or criminal. Pegler discusses this a bit along with a complete history of the Sniper, their craft, and equipment. It makes for extremely interesting reading. Many historical facts are brought to light by the author and after reading this book one can better understand the need for this dark warrior, even more so in the 21st century.

A comprehensive introductory history of the sniper.......2005-01-02
This comprehensive history of the military sniper traces the development of the sniper from 1500, the American Civil War and European wars, WWI and WWII (in both the European and Pacific Wars), limited wars from 1945-85, the Vietnam Conflict, and the present. It is filled with anecdotes of snipers, B & W and color photos, and a brief description of the weapons used. What fascinated me the most were chapter 6 (Russian snipers from 1936 - 1945), chapter 7 (German Snipers in the Eastern front from 1941-45), chapter 8 (the American sniper in the War against Japan in WWII), and chapter 9 (the American sniper in the European front in WWII). In each of these chapters, the author describes the training, the rifles / ammunition used, and the combat performance of the snipers. What fascinated me was the development of the American sniper in WWII, since these American forces had to start completely from scratch in developing the skill of sniping. The author Martin Pegler does a great job of blending technical information with anecdotes and descriptions of the combat performance / training of the snipers. This is an excellent introduction of the history of the military sniper for any military historian or enthusiast.
