I have not read the book. It could be a great book for all I know. I just wanted to point out that the cover has what looks like a chinese water deer skull in the top left corner. The last time I checked those were not found in North America.
Excellent guide.......2005-08-13
I found this to be a superb reference in identifying random bones I've found in the woods. I *like* the simple line drawings--they show the basic shape of the bones nicely--you know exactly what it is you're looking for. I highly recommend it!

If you want to major in Carolina basketball, this is certainly the primary text. Breezily written, well researched, and rich with anecdotes, Four Corners solidly surveys a remarkable sporting phenomenon: the concentrated quartet of hoop dreamers--UNC, NC State, Duke, and Wake Forest--that dominates the ACC, and, for that matter, the NCAA tournament. Menzer, a sportswriter for the Winston-Salem Journal, tips off in the pre-ACC era of Coach Everett Case at State, and then looks at the teams and programs molded over time by such outsized presences as Frank McGuire, Dean Smith, Jim Valvano, Bones McKinney, and Mike Krzyzewski. "People can talk all they want about the Big Ten," says Duke's charismatic Coach K. "About Michigan and Ohio State and Indiana and Kentucky or whatever, but there's no way that compares. They're in different states. Here, we share the same dry cleaners." Four Corners carefully examines what comes out in the wash and, in the process, airs some pretty good dirty laundry. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
For sheer intensity and excitement, few contests can match a college basketball game—unless it's one played between two in-state, longtime conference foes separated by only a few miles of the hoops highway known as"Tobacco Road." The four major Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) schools in North Carolina have won eight NCAA titles and continue to dominate the modern college game like no other area in the country.
The winners of three national titles, the North Carolina Tar Heels have been a basketball powerhouse since the 1950s. Longtime coach Dean Smith and his famous "Four Corners" offense changed how the game wasplayed and ultimately forced the introduction of the shot clock. Down the road, the N.C. State Wolfpack won two national championships, and their coach Jimmy Valvano brought an extroverted enthusiasm to coaching stillrecalled with fondness and admiration. A powerhouse of big-time college basketball for five decades, the Duke Blue Devils, coached by Vic Bubas and later Mike Krzyzewski, have been to twelve Final Fours and have won three NCAA titles since 1991. In Winston-Salem the Wake Forest Demon Deacons have produced eleven All-Americans, ten ACC Players of the Year, and scores of successful NBA players.
Collectively the Big Four have made North Carolina the center of the basketball universe. This is their story.

Welcome to North Carolina.......2002-04-23
To many fans of college basketball, the ACC can be defined most seasons by what happens within the confines of the state of North Carolina. With four teams growing up within 50 miles of each other, and each one featuring a host of truly unique and competitive individuals as their coaches, the North Carolina teams have continually dominated the scene in college basketball for the past 50 years.
The book follows the story of Duke, North Carolina, NC State, and Wake Forest from their days in the Southern Conference to the formation of the ACC, right up until today. Each era is defined by the men who coached and played for each of these teams throughout the years. The book provides an excellent history lesson on what has become the center of power in the most competitive conference in college basketball.
I have been a fan of ACC basketball for the last ten years and this book helped me to learn the history of the most storied teams within the league. If you are a fan of NCAA basketball, this is an excellent book and should be highly recommended.
An Apt Title.......2002-03-03
Four Corners is a thorough history of basketball in North Carolina--a very interesting subject for basketball fans everywhere (it is home to more dominant programs than any other state in the country)--but unfortunately Menzer's book is like the four corners defense in that it really slows things down. He is not a particularly good writer and his anecdotes often fall flat because he does a poor job of explaining the story. Another problem is that he relies on very few sources, so his book is terribly biased and its stories are limited. For instance, Menzer relies on Billy Packer to essentially tell Wake Forest's story. While Packer is amusing, he is arrogant and is only one person so Wake's history is not three dimensional at all and really doesn't seem particularly interesting. Despite these flaws, which would prevent me from recommending this book to anyone who doesn't love college basketball and particularly the Carolina schools, this book is a good companion for a fan and will give them some interesting historical context that will allow them to appreciate their team that much more. Also, it will provide some nice trivia for those who like to bring up obscure facts during arguments about who is the best player, team, coach, etc. in the history of these programs.
Great Book!!.......2001-06-01
Borrowed this from the library and brought it back late because I read it twice. I am planning to get it again and read it again. I have grown up with ACC basketball, but I never had the whole historical context laid out for me. This book does that. It is well written (thank you, but I understand "Duke continued their run" just fine) informative, chatty, and obviously written by someone who loves, lives, and breathes his subject matter.
Four Corners = Five Stars.......2000-03-03
Four Corners by Joe Menzer is an outstanding review of the modern era of college basketball in North Carolina. It is a must-read for the Carolina hoops fan and a good selection for any college basketball aficionado.
The wit and insight of Four Corners puts Menzer on a path trod by the likes of Frank DeFord and other greats of sports journalism. His style is well-structured and clean, without dips into slang and minutia that too often mar sports writing.
Four Corners is definitely Five Stars. Joe Menzer wins this year's "Sixth Man Award" for North Carolina college basketball.
You don't have to be from North Carolina to enjoy this book!.......1999-06-07
I have started my summer reading and so thoroughly enjoyed Menzer's Four Corners. I played womens's basketball and have always enjoyed the game. I never really understood the ACC rivalry. Thanks to Menzer's book, I do now. I so enjoyed this. A must read!

A must have........2007-05-09
A product without "buts". You can find in all you need to handle russian verbs. A better option?? A good russian teacher.
A comparative approach.......2007-04-13
Rather than say that this book is better or worse than "501 Russian Verbs," I'm going to compare it with its chief rival and point out what I consider the strengths and weaknesses of each. Please bear with a couple of random comments before I do that. As a newspaper copy editor, I know that errors invariably find their way into written material. Considering Mr. Franke's credentials as a teacher at the Defense Language Institute, I am sure his book is a reliable reference, even if it happens to contain the print peccadillos mentioned in a previous review. Also, in the spirit of fairness, I must point out that "501 Russian verbs" appends a partially conjugated list of 100 verbs "for the 21st Century" and therefore has the greater number of tabular verbs. Included in that list is zhevat' (to chew). I was unaware that chewing is a 21st-century phenomenon in Russia. But since that is neither here nor there, on to the salient points.
Advantages of Big Silver over 501:
*The usage examples, which are numerous and varied. The lack thereof is 501's biggest shortcoming.
*Clearer method of helping readers choose the correct case to go with the given verb.
*Verb exercises. They're not much, but a little practice is better than no practice. And there's an answer key.
*More thorough introductory section on Russian verbs, particularly the explanation of the ever-problematic verbs of motion.
*Russian verb index with more than 2,000 entries. It's also easy to find which one of the 555 verbs has the corresponding conjugation pattern.
Advantages of 501 over Big Silver
*Conjugated forms printed in larger type and with greater spacing between letters. I find 501's conjugations much more legible and an enormous help to memorization.
*Case cues that hint at the proper ending. I prefer Big Silver's method because it specifically states which case is required, so there's no need to consult the chart, but 501's way does help me visualize the case endings.
*Referring to the verb forms with the "biy" particle as conditional rather than subjunctive. Seems clearer to me.
*Fewer conjugation classifications. 501 follows the standard division, categorizing Russian verbs into either Type I or Type II. Big Silver, on the other hand, divides verbs into six classifications, which can cause an undue amount of confusion. I think 501's simplified approach works better.
So there you have it. I bought "501 Russian Verbs" first because it was the only one on the shelf when I went looking for a Russian verb book. My advice is to get both, unless you're just dabbling in the language. For about $35, you can ensure that you have at your fingertips the two best resources in English for making sense of Russian's notoriously tricky verbs.
Excellent Resource.......2007-03-20
I particularly like the way the book provides various examples for each verb in everyday sentence form. These examples give the student a little extra added punch that the 501 Verbs book (an already excellent resource in itself) lacks.
GREAT.......2007-01-25
This is the best, AND cheapest, book of Russky verbs and EXAMPLES, including the propositions necessary to complete phrases. Don't be fooled by the "500 verbs" impostor, it s/n/b on the market. This one gives so much more!
From the rebublic of Gergia.......2006-08-28
I have been using this book while taking russian classes from a private tutor and also through an online program. i have found this book very usefull and packed with great information. this book was recommended to me by a russian speaker. i also recomend "master the basics russian" as a usefull grammar guide.
Book Description
Called a fig leaf for inaction by many at its inception, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia has surprised its critics by growing from an unfunded U.N. Security Council resolution to an institution with more than 1,000 employees and a $100 million annual budget. With Slobodan Milosevic now on trial and more than forty fellow indictees currently detained, the success of the Hague tribunal has forced many to reconsider the prospects of international justice. John Hagan's Justice in the Balkans is a powerful firsthand look at the inner workings of the tribunal as it has moved from an experimental organization initially viewed as irrelevant to the first truly effective international court since Nuremberg.
Creating an institution that transcends national borders is a challenge fraught with political and organizational difficulties, yet, as Hagan describes here, the Hague tribunal has increasingly met these difficulties head-on and overcome them. The chief reason for its success, he argues, is the people who have shaped it, particularly its charismatic chief prosecutor, Louise Arbour. With drama and immediacy, Justice in the Balkans re-creates how Arbour worked with others to turn the tribunal's fortunes around, reversing its initial failure to arrest and convict significant figures and advancing the tribunal's agenda to the point at which Arbour and her colleagues, including her successor, Carla Del Ponte (nicknamed the Bulldog), were able to indict Milosevic himself. Leading readers through the investigations and criminal proceedings of the tribunal, Hagan offers the most original account of the foundation and maturity of the institution.
Justice in the Balkans brilliantly shows how an international social movement for human rights in the Balkans was transformed into a pathbreaking legal institution and a new transnational legal field. The Hague tribunal becomes, in Hagan's work, a stellar example of how individuals working with collective purpose can make a profound difference.
"The Hague tribunal reaches into only one house of horrors among many; but, within the wisely precise remit given to it, it has beamed the light of justice into the darkness of man's inhumanity, to woman as well as to man."—The Times (London)

Book Description
At the dawn of the International Criminal Court, the rich experience of the ad hoc International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) will prove to be the primary source of legal authorities for many years. The creation of the ICTY in 1993 heralded a new-found willingness of the international community to bring to book perpetrators of war crimes and gross or systematic violations of human rights. Written by academics and practitioners, and notably many "insiders" at the ICTY, this volume focuses particularly on the international and criminal law developments that have taken place in the practice and procedure of the Tribunal. Throughout are threads concerning the development and application of international criminal law not only by the ICTY, but also by the ad hoc International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the new International Criminal Court.

Book Description
In this stirring book Richard J. Goldstone chronicles his progression from a youthful activist opposing South Africa's racial policies to the world's first independent war crimes' prosecutor. A justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, Goldstone has also served as chief prosecutor for United Nations tribunals on human rights crimes in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. His unique firsthand experience investigating these crimes gives profound weight to his plea for a permanent international criminal court. The Castle Lectures in Ethics, Politics, and Economics
Customer Reviews:
Recanting an Earlier Review .......2005-07-24
I wrote the review of "For Humanity" immediately below ("Lazy Book"). Even though my review was negative, I recently reread Goldstone's book after hearing him speak at a conference in Washington. His intelligence and decency must have made an impression on me, because I enjoyed "For Humanity" a lot more the second time.
I stand by my original assertion that the book is slight and unworthy of a jurist of Goldstone's stature; his failure, for example, to analyze the cases he prosecuted in Bosnia is inexplicable, given the sub-title of the book. In the end, however, I'm giving the book two extra stars just because it was written by Goldstone. He is a courageous, decent man who did the right thing at a time when many white South Africans evaded politics and took refuge in lives of privilege. In addition, his anecdotes are pretty good, especially those at the expense of UN bureaucrats.
So...people should read his book, but they shouldn't have any illusions about what they'll find. Goldstone provides little historical context about the end of apartheid or the disintegration of Yugoslavia. Anyone looking for that history should look elsewhere. However, those who already know the basic story (I used to live in South Africa) may enjoy his book. It's a good read and can be polished off in three or four hours. Now, if Goldstone would just write a serious autobiography about his amazing career in law, human rights advocacy, and diplomacy, he'd get five star reviews!
Lazy Book.......2003-02-13
Goldstone is a skillful lawyer and a dedicated human rights activist. He played a central role in South Africa's transition to democracy and in the purusit of justice in the former Yugoslavia. He has a sharp eye for bureaucratic absurdity (especially in the UN). He knows world leaders and could have written a fascinating "inside" history. Instead, he produced this short, lightweight book comprised of little more than anecdotes and name-dropping. It's incredible that Yale University Press saw fit to publish it. We can only hope that Goldstone will turn to writing a serious autobiography after he steps down from the South African Constitutional Court.
Superficial Yet Interesting.......2001-08-01
I was looking for the specifics of the South African problem and reconciliation. Goldstone focuses on the logistics of his position as judge/prosecutor, rather than on specific crimes and prosecutions. O'Connor's introduction is the most interesting part of the book.
Very informative.......2001-07-06
Makes you appreciate the success of the Nuremberg trila and how it was put togather in the days witout modern cominications and it uniting of the world in the quest for international justice against perpetrators of war crimes
Prosecuting war crimes: a personal account.......2000-10-10
Richard Goldstone's latest book takes you on a journey, which is not only starkly graphic and honest in its depictions but allows you to be privy to particular times of historical importance, which have been previously hidden from the public eye. Furthermore, Goldstone, in this book, not only concretises the meaning and substance of Humananitarian law BUT elavates it to a higher level, bringing home the message that it can happen again...
Book Description
Becoming America's top singer on a nationally televised contest takes more than talent, drive and really good cheekbones when the stakes include true love.
Songwriter Adam Holt is in trouble. First, his star client, teen pop sensation Christie Squires dumps him, deciding she is tired of singing songs like "Can I Have a Taste of Your Ice Cream," one of the many hits Adam penned for her, and wants to be taken seriously. Then underground music sensation Sam Sparks--brilliant, gorgeous, overeducated Sam Sparks--sets his sights on Adam's boyfriend, Lyle, a political analyst who appears regularly on Meet the Press-type Sunday talk shows. When Sam and Christie throw their hats in the ring on a new reality TV contest to find the best singer-songwriter in America, Adam sees a chance to save both his career and his relationship. He'll enter the damn thing himself! Maybe he should have thought a little harder about that, but it's too late; Adam is going up against Sam's sensitive solo performances, Christie's squad of text messagers, and the amorous advances of Nicky Jansen: a chiseled, hot-eyed U.K. pop star who is one of the judges. Can Adam set aside the flip attitude that has served him well so far and find depths within himself that he never knew existed to write the sort of songs that will keep him in the competition? But most important, can he prove to himself that his talent is something worthwhile--and that he himself is worthy of Lyle's continued love?
Orland Outland is the author of seven books, including the best-sellers Different People and Every Man For Himself. He lives in Reno, Nev.
Customer Reviews:
For the elusive .......2004-10-24
In his latest novel, Outland brings us Adam Bede, (...), bipolar lyricist who wishes he had the tenacity to become "a serious person" ... someone who commands respect, whom people listen to, envy and try to emulate. He feels he has a particular handcap in that endeavor, since his forte' is in creative arts, where once need to be a bit "wild" and unpredictable, but his illness forces him to stay on medication to keep his "wildness" from getting out of control. His debut album, put together when he was off his meds, turned out to be tremendous disappointment to him.
Then his luck changed. With his partner, composer Calliope, Adam gets in on the ground floor of developing a Britany Spears-ish teenage vocal diva, Christie Squires, who turns out to be financially rewarding to all. And while accompanying Christie to a Today show appearance, Adam meets Lyle, a foreign affairs commentator for CNN, who is a big fan of Adam's work, including his solo album. They set up housekeeping as Adam rides the "Christie" train for a few years, until his meal ticket decides to sue him and his partners for a higher share of song profits. Dejected, Adam decides to "reinvent" himself, on his way to being "a serious person," and auditions for a reality show for singer-songwriters that is a cross between "American Idol" and "Big Brother." Among the other participants is Sam, a young singer who he suspects of trying to steal Lyle from him, and Christie, his former protege.
The book is alternately witty and philosophical in tone, with some dark moments when Adam explores his "head" when off his medication. I've read all of Orland's novels, and this is probably my least favorite, likely because I cannot really relate to any of the characters, though I appreciate the obvious satire of the reality TV genre. Rate it 4 of 5 stars.

Revising the "One Size Fits All" Model of Rehabilitation.......2001-04-20
Employment of those with severe mental illnesses remains one of the most challenging areas of vocational rehabilitation. Shafer et al. address the issues, attitudes, and stigmas faced by this population in a concise and well-constructed guide. Instead of an idealized and theoretical approach, these authors confront the realities of mental illnesses as they manifest in the workplace and suggest alternatives that are supported by empirical evidence. Their review of existing literature is thorough, and consideration of every aspect of the rehabilitation process makes for a comprehensive design model. This book will be useful to anyone vested in improving the quality of life for those with chronic mental illness. The best thing that can be said, however, is that it conveys hope to those who suffer these devastating conditions.

Book Description
This collection of essays honours Gabrielle Kirk McDonald, the International Tribunal's second President and the presiding judge in the first international war crimes trial in modern times. Written by judges, legal advisers and practitioners, it is the first comprehensive overview of the procedural and evidentiary aspects of the International Tribunal's work. These essays will be of great assistance to all those who are following the work and development of the International Tribunal, particularly practitioners, academics, and students. This collection is thus a valuable addition to the literature on the International Tribunal and a worthy tribute to President McDonald and her work.
