Book Description
FROM THE ICE. . . A mammoth, flash frozen in solid ice 10,000 years ago is brought to the surface by a team of scientists. An act of sabotage frees the giant from its icy tomb and reveals the secret held inside. OUT OF THE MAMMOTH. . . The body of an ancient woman, cloaked in furs, slides out of the mammoth's belly. But it is not the woman that holds the team's attention...it is the object she is clutching...a device created by an advanced civilization. THE HUNT IS ON. . . The device is accidentally activated, summoning forces who seek its destruction. It is the key to mankind's salvation and freedom from the men behind the curtain, pulling the strings and leading humanity towards destruction.

I had such high hopes ..........2007-10-10
I love the authors who recommended this book, so I was so excited when I got it, but I have to agree with some of the other reviewers: the grammar was so awful, it was distracting. The book itself could have used a strong hand in editing it. The plot was thin, the dialogue was unrealistic and stilted, and the characters were flat. I was intrigued by the thought of the mammoth and the excavation, but that was hardly a part of the book. For those looking for fascinating creatures and ancient or scientific discoveries, try Steve Alten or James Rollins. This books reads like a high schooler's screenplay, light on the plot and without realistic dialogue. I saw this author has another book out, and I love the cover, but after recalling this one, I can't in good faith make the purchase.
Nice idea, writing improvement needed.......2007-09-23
While I liked the core idea of this book, that two extra-galactic civilizations are opposing one another to destroy/save worlds, some of the details are inconsistent. Also the writing doesn't do a great job of making the characters realistic and wanders off into "B" movie kind of dialogue, plus they also overreact, one moment they are lucid and even giving orders and then next they are whimpering in fear somewhere, then they snap back to reality. An easy, okay read for the beach for sci-fi fans but not for my "best books" list.
Addicted to Arctic Adventures! Especially this one........2007-08-21
Raising the Past....This book is fantastic! I recommend it to anyone. A fun read with finely tuned details of the arctic and it's conditions. I didn't want the suspence that was killing me to end. Each one of the characters has a vitality all their own. This is a story that makes you think, and crave for a sequel. And hopefully there's a movie in the making! I'm glad I found this book. With the wonderful endorsements made by author James Rollins saying how great this book is...and he's right!
Can't wait for my copy of Antarktos Rising to arrive in the mail. I've found another favorite author!
What Happen's Next.......2007-08-20
Great read. I feel as if I have made a trip to the Artic, even though it has been 90 degrees in my geographical location. I can't believe how authors can come up with such diverse plots and situations. Raising the Past was so good that I couldn't put it down. Thank heavens I have a DVR cause I didn't even turn on the television until I finished it.
Some may complain about grammar and words that were misspelled. But it didn't detract from me being in the Artic, waiting for the next shoe to fall. Write another book, Mr. Robinson. I like your style !!
Mammoth Adventure!.......2007-07-07
The story begins ten thousand years ago, when a canny cavewoman is visited by strangers from another world. She accepts the object they give her, yet at the end of her life she fails to use it as they instructed. Next thing you know, her frozen remains are unwittingly discovered by a modern-day excavation team in search of the woolly mammoth. Tried and tested archaeologists are rocketed into a fight for their lives and ultimately for the whole planet.
Twists and turns of truly "mammoth" proportions follow. The action rarely eases, and new dangers heap up around every corner. The reader is fleeing along with the team, and learns the truth step by shocking step until finally the entirety of the deception is revealed. Nothing is as it seems to be. What if the idea of angels and demons really did come from opposing alien factions, warring for control of the Earth - one race said to be evil and another claiming to be good?
This is a good exercise in mind-expansion, for sure. It's mainstream fiction, although you will also find spiritual aspects - chiefly the significance of free will in the value of human society. Vast quantities of blood and gore, fights to the death, and impossible chase scenes with larger-than-life alien species make this a nail-biting thriller from beginning to end - though not necessarily to be recommended for a weak constitution. It reminded me vaguely of Jurassic Park at times, in a different setting and with different monsters.
"Raising the Past" makes a terrific cross-over effort, in two directions at once. It's ideal to draw an average reader into the science fiction scene, and may also serve as an effective introduction for someone unfamiliar with spiritual genres. It's this mix that brings you to the unique conclusion, amazingly managing to leave the world unshattered at the end. I view it as a considerable bridge-building contribution and an enrichment to the genre scene.

See below for a better choice!.......2007-07-02
I too am disappointed when "difficult" sudokus are labeled "killer" sudokus, which is a completely different type of puzzle. The best Killer Sudoku Book I've ever enjoyed is The Official Book of Killer Sudoku: 120 Puzzles from Lite to Truly Killer. Try it instead! The Official Book of Killer Sudoku: 120 Puzzles from Lite to Truly Killer
Good Bear Collection.......2007-06-13
I see this is not a serious sukoku game book, instead, it is a beautiful Alaska bear, bear fact, plus sudoku games.
Enjoyed it very much.
Very Entertaining!.......2007-06-13
Added more entertaining factor to my trip in Alaska.
Enjoyed the information of Killer Grizzly in every page.
It didn't have Adduko for the real killer status of the sukodu game, but it served for my trip.
Buyer beware!.......2007-06-01
The puzzles in this book are NOT "Killer sudokus". Rather, they are difficult sudokus, which the author labels killer. "Killer" refers to a specific type of sudoku puzzle which I expected to find in this book. In this type of puzzle, there are cages in which the correct numbers must sum to a given value.
I still plan to solve and enjoy the traditional sudoku puzzles in this book, but I was disappointed that the title was misleading.
Most inappropriate title!!!!.......2007-05-22
"Killer" sudoku is a very specific type of sudoku puzzle -- NOT just tough "regular" sudoku. I now have to return TWO copies of this book as it was NOT what the title implied!

Eyewitnesses, investigators, and survivors tell their stories of face-to-face encounters with bears in the wild
Customer Reviews:
KILLED BEARS.......2005-09-27
Very well written, informative and refreshing. The author writes about a number of incidents which I have not read about elsewhere, an accomplishment given the glut of bear attack books on the market which often rehash the same attacks. The author is not as radical as fellow BC author JG Shelton, so there is not the constant undercurrent of advancing an agenda. The backstory of tracking down the interviews lends local color and the feeling of being there that only the best outdoor writers can accomplish.
Not Bad but Not Larry Kanuit Either.......2005-06-18
This book is very informative but is not as well written as Larry K's. I think if I'd read this one first I would have liked it more. All in All not a bad read though.
Real-life stories of survivors of bear attacks.......2001-12-13
What causes killer bear attacks, can they be prevented, and how have humans survived? Killer Bears gathers real-life stories of survivors of bear attacks, supplementing their first-person face-to-face encounters with keys to understanding the behaviors of wild bears. An intriguing, absorbing title which can be pursued as a leisure/adventure read and a natural history of bears.

The Sugar Creek Gang: The Killer Bear Review.......2005-10-28
Paul Hutchenes is a very adventurous writer. His story the Sugar Creek Gang: The Killer Bear always ketp you guessing and on the edge of your seat. The one thing I didnt like about this story is that it wasnt just about finding the bear it wsa also about each one of the gangs lives. The gang always goes swimming in the summer. Circus the leader of the gang brought up the bear the whole gang was quiet as a church mouse. Then they heard a big branch snap they all turned white. One of the many reasons i liked this book is because once you picked it up you cant put it back down. Cicus is my favorite character because he came from a bad backroud and he had the easy way to go down the wrong paths, but he got saved by the Lord and he took the right paths. When he told his alcohloic dad that he was saved by the Lord his dad rushed to get saved by the lord. When they were both saved they both hugged and cryied. The scene that I liked the most was ehn the book decribed everybody and their backrounds,
The question that I has was why didnt the gang tell it to their parents.
Discipleship 101 for kids... and a whole lot more!.......2005-01-09
I am a mom to 5 boys and our family has been hooked on the adventures of the Sugar Creek Gang for a few years now! We originally discovered the stories through an awesome set of cassette tapes. The books were dramatized for an radio series by Paul Ramseyer of Northwestern College Radio in Minnesota and our family is now a part of the ministry, helping to produce the audio series for families to enjoy at home! Do you want your children to learn gentle lessons of courage, faith & friendship on THEIR level? Do you want to see real growth in their character? The stories are fun adventures with the truth of God's plans woven skillfully throughout. See the world through the eyes of Bill Collins, a freckle-faced, firey-tempered red head. You'll enjoy Bill's antics and the barefoot fun of all the boys in the "gang"! (As a side note, I do recommend the books be read in order. They tell an ongoing story from beginning to end.) From the back of the tapes: "Step back in time... to one-room schoolhouses, hot summer days of fishing, fun and barefoot boys. Sugar Creek Gang stories engage the imagination and draw a child's heart into a living relationship with God! Hymns, scripture verses, nature lore, poetry; sensitivity toward the disabled, the oppressed... and the courage and confidence to share the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ." --- Just the right recipe for training up a child!
My Boys Were Cheering For More!.......2000-06-10
When roudy, squirmy boys beg for more, you know you have a hit in your hands! Not only did the story carry them - and me - along, the lessons taught can carry them through life! In a very natural fashion, Hutchens introduces themes such as the joy of hard work, manners, cleanliness, the foolishness of drunkenness, caring for others, Bible reading and prayer.
This book could be used as a Sunday School class discussion - a week per chapter. Its strength is that though filled with nuggests of sound Christian wisdom and advice, it is not preachy or devoid of story line. We enjoyed this breif tome so much, we are looking forward to starting another Sugar Creek Gang book tomorrow. This fun read is worth the time and generated some healthy discussion. It is definitely boy friendly! (Note: I caught my 11 year old daugther listening in as well.)
Book Description
Her story begins as an Ursid Shirley Temple, a cute blond phenom amid the real-life Shangri la of Glacier National Park's most scenic mountain valley. In time, however, the curtsying knockout zoomed to Princess Diana-sized celebrity, demanding more than admiring glances and the flashing bulbs of paparazzi cameras. It was those outsized demands and an ever-growing haughtiness that attracted official attention.

Most Awesome Book I Have Ever Read.......2004-07-02
This is the most awesome book I have ever read, and I love to read. This is a must-read for anyone who is interested in wildlife. Besides being totally intriguing, it can change the very way you look at life. Roland Cheek always puts out great books, but he hit the jackpot with this one!
chocolate legs.......2003-10-30
The book Chocolate Legs by Roland Cheek is worth reading. He describes the Story line really well and he tells in realistic detail. Roland Cheek writes about things about the problems that they had with the bear. I would recommend this book to anyone even if they weren't from Montana.
Chocolate Legs.......2003-06-30
I love the folksy style of author Roland Cheek. He is not a bear biologist, but he knows his bears!!!I just finished reading this book for a second time, and I feel another star is due. Maybe the best part of this book is that Roland Cheek is NOT A BEAR BIOLOGIST!!!!
Book Description
When Goldy, owner of Goldilocks' Catering, faces the challenge of whipping up a sumptuous lowfat feast for the Mignon Cosmetics' company banquet, she rises to the occasion brilliantly...only to discover just how ugly the beauty biz can be!
On the day of the banquet Goldy finds herself confronting an angry mob of demonstrators--"Spare the Hares"--who object to Mignon Cosmetics' animal-testing policies. As she struggles to carry forty pounds of lowfat fare from her van to the mall where the banquet is being held, she hears an ominous
squeal of tires and a horrifying thump. Seconds later, a Mignon employee lies dead on the pavement. And soon the police discover that this hit-and-run was no
accident.
Now Goldy is enmeshed up to her saute pans in a homicide investigation. Could the murder have had something to do with Spare the Hares--or with the exotic flower found near the dead body? Though busy serving up Hoisin Turkey and Grand Marnier Cranberry Muffins, Goldy decides to start digging at Mignon's
million-dollar cosmetics counter. But when another murder takes place and Goldy herself is attacked, the caterer turned sleuth knows she must step up her
search for a gruesome killer. For this time was only a warning. Next time she'll be dead--and it won't be pretty.
Customer Reviews:
Too many deaths for one character to bear........2007-09-13
Like other reviewers, I found this offering was just so-so. It may be that I'm weary of Goldy always finding dead bodies, always having mini-breakdowns, and Goldy's loved ones always being under suspicion. It seems churlish of me to complain about very well-described human emotions to traumatic death, but after four or five stories it's just gotten a bit tedious for me. Let Goldy solve a murder that's not directly related to her little family for a change.
No Appetite to Read More.......2006-06-29
This review is for the audio version. This is the first book I have read of this series. However, this book is the fifth in a series and the main character went on and on about her ex husband. This is after she has already remarried so I can only imagine how the first four books must have dwelled on it. I thought the premise of this book was interesting: catering a low fat luncheon for a cosmetic company. However, the book was downbeat mixed with corny and I didn't care about any of the characters. I also didn't like that the author would negatively stereotype people if they were physically unattractive. The lead had a harsh personality and I would not want her to cater any event for me.
You know you want to.......2006-05-05
Diane Mott Davidson is an old standby for me. Whenever I'm in a bookstore, I can look for her titles on the shelf and all is right with the universe. This is a series of mysteries with the same character, Goldy the caterer. Though she isn't a detective, her job involves her in a lot of situations other 9-to-5ers might not run into, and that's the hook of the book as it were.
Killer Pancake is light fluffy fun (the allusion to pancakes here is intended). And there are recipes, so who can fault that? I recommend any of her books. The subplot of her relationship with "the jerk" may get a little old for you if you read enough of her stuff, but let it ride. Every great lady has to have a few flaws. Killer Pancake is just one more in a fun little series. Bon appetit.
Mouthwatering Recipes.......2005-10-29
The so-called "low-fat" recipes in the book appear delightful especially the Hoisin Turkey with Roasted Pine Nuts in Lettuce Cups, and Turkey Curry with Raisin Rice. Hopefully they result in delectable dishes when I finally make time to prepare them. An index of the recipes is included at the end of the book which is great. As for the mystery itself, it is an account of a caterer trying her best to stay sane doing overrated daily chores while assisting the police (whether they welcome it or not) to solve a murder case that involves the well-being of her assistant while balancing a so-called fear of an ex-husband. If there are civilians who are as perceptive as Goldy, the caterer, then maybe a lot of real life murders could be solved more quickly. At least, that's what the writing seems to concentrate on - a woman's intuition. Too much of it makes the story unbelievable even as a fiction. There are a few actions including a shooting spree but the way the tale is told, the tumults cannot be grasped - everything is on the surface, more in the form of a news article than a stirring recounting. It is a rapid read of a short mystery that comprises mentions of lots of good food, drinks, and preparations with a mediocre technique of story telling.
