Customer Reviews:
Beware of the digital upgrade.......2007-09-05
I wanted to forwarn other users, especially students, of the pitfalls of the digital upgrade option:
1) Don't buy the upgrade if you're hoping to get access to it through the library computers, instead of having to lug the massive book to school. Apparently, you cannot view any online book from more than 7 different computers within a 30 day period. And, consequently, if the cache happens to get cleared after each session (as is the case with most shared computers), then you're limited to only 7 sessions with ANY computer.
2) Beware that the book is hard to read online. It's great for adding annotations (highlighting text, adding bookmarks, typing notes, etc.), but it's a real strain on the eyes if you try to read a full chapter. The text is low contrast (gray on white) and low resolution. Even when you use the Zoom-in feature (which lets you increase the size a little bit), it's still hard on the eyes. The text is still just blurry enough to make you think you might need glasses. After several chapters, you probably will need glasses :-)
You can check the quality first by viewing the Preview. That's representative of the whole book. Try reading an entire page and decide for yourself. On the plus side, if you do buy the book, and realize that these issues really do pose a problem for you, Amazon lets you request a refund, as long as you have viewed less than 20% of the book. 20% of 1300 pages is a lot, so you should be fine.
From Start to End.......2007-03-28
This is a great educational text. Each chapter starts from cellular level and progresses to the functional and clinical level. Being a chiropractor and working with the spine everyday I need to understand exactly where the problem starts and not focus on the symptoms. This text has allowed me to understand what is neurophysiologically going on with my patients and improve their course of treatment. As described the neurological system is the electricity of the body and if a fuse decides to blow you need to know where to look.
Impressive for a textbook.......2007-02-13
As far as textbooks go, this has to be one of the best that I have come across...and I have come across quite a few. The material is divided into closely related sections, and the text is clear and to the point in its explanation. Not much filler text or needless material. The diagrams are pretty clear and well positioned in the sections also.
Great Reference Book.......2007-01-06
The text is extremely clear and to the point. The diagrams are also simple to understand. Every major topic in neurosci is discussed, allowing you to get an excellent foundation such that you could read any recent publications on that topic and understand completely what the authors are referring to.
A Masterful Medical Book of Great Importance Written by a Nobel Laureate!.......2006-06-07
I am a Female Reconstructive Surgeon who while reading a diversified field of topics have fallen very fond of a particular work. This is Principles of Neural Science. having just completed the 2000 edition I can guarrantee that the new edition due June 2006 will be even more captivatiing. If you have the opportunity to see Dr Kandel speak please do he is an academic historian who gives a broad history of each critical piece of medical history to each of his topics. But returning to his epic, Principles of Neural Science is akin to Newtons Principia in that is a sublime masterpiece. The Kandell prose is colorful, smooth and insightful for medical science. I have found it easy to read 100-200 pages a day so that the 1400 page book took only a week to discover. The illustrations are the best for any field of Medicine and I have read alll the classics- Harrisions & Cecils Medicine and Schwartz and Sabistons General Surgery neither of these books elucidates the subjugate field with this type of clarity and instructional prose. Do as I have done and preorder the new edition. Those with any interest in the brain will certainly be amazed at the easy depth of information you will achieve. Believe me I am writing a book -Female Reconstructive Surgery and I will be implementing operative 17.2 million pixel photography to achieve the splendid vision the Kandel has produced with his illustrations. I have learned so much on how a book for Surgeons should be written from this Nobel Laureate

Book Description
The third edition of The Neuron provides a comprehensive first course in the cell and molecular biology of nerve cells. The first part of the book covers the properties of the many newly discovered ion channels that have emerged through mapping of the genome. These channels shape the way a single neuron generates varied patterns of electrical activity. Next are covered the molecular mechanisms that convert electrical activity into the secretion of neurotransmitter and hormones at synaptic junctions between neurons. The second part of the book covers the biochemical pathways that are linked to the action of neurotransmitters and that can alter the cellular properties of neurons or sensory cells that transduce information from the outside world into the electrical code used by neurons. The final section reviews our rapidly expanding knowledge of the molecular factors that induce an undifferentiated cell to become a neuron, and then guide it to form appropriate synaptic connections with its partners. This section also focuses on the role of ongoing experience and activity in shaping these connections, and finishes with an account of mechanisms thought to underlie the phenomena of learning and memory. New for the Third Edition: This is a thoroughly revised and expanded edition (60 pages longer) and features a new 8-page , 4-color insert as well as the following changes: 1. The mapping of the human genome and that of other species has led to the discovery of numerous new proteins that regulate the excitability, development, and function of neurons. These have been incorporated into the new edition in nearly all of the chapters. 2. The first section of the book, which deals with neuronal excitability, has been reorganized to make it more readable for those students with less background in physical sciences. A new chapter has been added to this section to allow the incorporation of new information on ion channel structure and on the role of channel auxiliary proteins in modulating neuronal excitability. 3. A new chapter, "The Birth and Death of Neurons," has been added to the last section. In addition to covering new discoveries about the early development of neurons, this chapter describes the recent discovery that new neurons are continually being formed in certain parts of the adult mammalian brain. It also describes research on stem cells, which holds therapeutic potential for the repair of damaged or diseased brain tissue. 4. The use of imaging technologies in the study of the brain has expanded enormously in the past few years. The new edition describes some of these new approaches. Moreover, the introduction of full color plates now allows many new images to be presented in their original form.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful text.......2002-01-16
This is one of the few molecular neurobiology textbooks available to the serious student. Overall, it is a very well written text, up to date, and quite detailed.
There is one weird quality about the book, however: the authors have not directly referenced statements in the book, as you would expect to find in any good advanced textbook in a scholarly field. They have instead written a bibliography at the very end, consisting of "Recommended Reading" and "References" for each chapter. I am unsure what criteria they used to differentiate the two.
Other than this minor point however, it's a first rate buy. The authors deserve several pats on their backs.
Neuron details.......2000-11-27
The molecular biology of the neuron is considered, from its electrical properties, synapses, differentiation, axon pathfinding, to chapters concluding with behavior and memory. Well written and includes easy to follow schematic diagrams, this reference is suitable for the motivated general reader.
Great book on all levels.......2000-11-16
"The Neuron" was a fantastic book to read. It served as a perfect mesh between a textbook and a novel. The book was written in plain english so anyone could enjoy it. The concepts discussed ranged from elementary to advanced which provided a nice progression to more complicated things. This book is a must read for anyone interested in neuroscience.
Very readable.......1999-06-10
I have compared several neurobiology textbooks and this one is my favorite. It's almost like a novel, very enjoyable. It emphasizes understanding of important concepts rather than throwing an overwhelming amount of facts at the students. And the organization of the material is great. There is an updated edition now, and I look forward to reading it.

Book Description
Written by cell biologists and neuroscientists, this volume in the
Methods in Cell Biology series is a detailed guide for cell biologists who would like to approach their experimental questions using nature's most interesting cells - neurons. Many cell biologists study the properties of cells grown outside of the animal in the controlled environment of a culture dish, but they would benefit from directing their attention to nerve cells as they are well-suited to almost every area of cell biological inquiry.
This book lays out numerous simple techniques for growing and carrying out experiments with many varieties of neurons. Subjects include peripheral and central neurons from vertebrate and invertebrate sources, as well as neuron-like cell lines. It also explains recent advances in our ability to introduce exogenous proteins and genes into neurons in culture. Procedures for successful protein infiltration, biolistic transfection, electroporation, and viral transgenic methods in neurons are also presented.
With the current and reliable information contained in this volume, growing various kinds of neurons in culture and using them for diverse experimental applications will be easy for cell biologists to master!
* Contains culture methodology for more than a dozen types of CNS and PNS neurons
* Includes most recent and reliable techniques from expert practitioners for specific experimental applications

Book Description
Dopamine was initially regarded as a mere precursor of noradrenaline, but has progressively gained its present status of a common target for major drug classes and a substrate for some basic functions and dysfunctions of the Central Nervous System. The scientific interest has shifted from typically motor areas of the striatum to traditionally limbic ones as the nucleus accumbens and its afferent areas, the prefrontal cortex, the hippocampal formation and the basolateral amygdala. This double volume provides a systematic account of the anatomy, physiology, neurochemistry, molecular biology and behavioural pharmacology of dopamine in the CNS. - The first volume deals with the history of dopamine, the anatomy of dopamine neurons, the biochemistry and molecular biology of dopamine uptake sites and of dopamine receptors.

Book Description
The first section of this volume corresponds to courses on the cytoskeleton, its various structures and its dynamics, especially during the cell cycle. The reductionist approach is favoured in this field and considerable effort is spent on finding out how these structures are built up from their component molecules, how they grow or decrease in size, how they interact with each other and with other cell components. The second section describes the endo membrane system of a eukaryotic cell and the regulated protein traffic that flows through it. Part III deals with the onset of higher levels of organization. Topics covered include the development of the central nervous system, the role of time in biology and theoretical models to describe biochemical and cellular oscillations. The volume concludes with a reflection on physics and biology and the author shares some of his thoughts on the different ways in which physicists and biologists tackle problems in their respective fields.
