Book Description
A chronicle of the impact of a much loved and much lauded horse racing icon, this is a complete account of Phar Lap's life. It details the many mysteries of his career, from his purchase as a gangly gelding bought cheaply in New Zealand to the infamous shooting that occurred just days before his great triumph in the 1930 Melbourne Cup and his previously unexplained death in North America. Bringing to life the characters of the racetrack, this book also examines the way media played a part in building the legend. Beautifully presented with archival photographs, newspaper articles, and racing memorabilia, this is a handsome commemorative of one of the best race horses there ever was.
Customer Reviews:
Hard to get into.......2007-07-11
Phar - Lap is one of my favorite racehorses, but I have to agree with some of the other people on here.....It is hard to get into. Not very well written. have to force myself to read it.
A Monster Of A Thoroughbred.......2006-11-13
Phar Lap is still considered one of the best, if not the finest Thoroughbred champion from Australia.
The book is an outstanding history of the racer and the impact he made in Australia and the potential career he made have had in the United States. Phar Lap died under mysterious circumstances before his scheduled debut in the U.S.
There has been controversy swirling over his death in the U.S. and there were those who felt Phar Lap was poisoned deliberately, though it was ruled then by natural causes. A 2006 necropsy - obviously not in this edition of the book - revealed that he was poisoned through a high-level of arsenic.
Phar Lap - nicknamed "Big Red" - was bred in New Zealand and grew to be slightly over 17 hands tall. He captured 37 of the 51 races and was not highly regarded as a juvenile; being bought at auction for a small price due to his pedigree.
But from the humble beginning came a legend who certainly can be compared with two other racers who carried the "Big Red" tag; Man o' War and Secretariat.
Pretty factual account of the life of Phar Lap and the time he lived in........2006-06-02
This book was never written to be a novel it is meant to be factual history of Big Red and the race scene at the time and it shows our Australian Culture at the time of the Great Depression which is when the he raced, how desperate people were for money and also the snobbery that was part of the AJC and VRC in Australia. The photos were of particular interest as a lot of them haven't been seen by people who never saw him race (like myself).
The final listing of his all of the races he ran and amount of stakes money that he won in the Depresssion was also enlightening. The mind just boggles if he was alive and racing today with the prize money that is around.
The chapter that was devoted to his death finally explained to the world and particularly Australia what happened to this great horse and the sad fact that the veterinary practices at the time couldn't have saved him.
This book for me is a collectable and will be an heirloom. The picture on the front cover has been taken where he finally stands in the Melbourne Museum, where he is the most visited display in the Museum.
A very dry read, not at all engaging.......2006-03-14
Perhaps I am being uncultured, and it is merely the act of converting Australian terms to American terms, but for me, this book was a total bore. The writing style was very stilted, frequently interrupted by the constant quotes and "excerpt" from other articles and books. Nor did I feel like I was ever allowed the honor of knowing Phar Lap, seeing him race, or even figuring out what made him so great. Instead, I got the royal treatment of learning about betting rings, and odds-making...and the darker side of the track.
To take my review in perspective, I found the acclaimed Cooper and Treat book about Man Of War fairly dull, as well. I have to admit that I much preferred the Walter Farley tale about the great horse. On the other hand, I loved "Ruffian, Burning From the Start," so perhaps my review can't be tossed aside without a second glance.
With a grain or pound of salt...take it as you will. I just feel that if you are going to try to honor a great horse, you should actually honor him, instead of dragging down his stature by writting a sub-par novel. It was a waste of money.
Good Book on Pharlap.......2006-02-03
The book was excellent reading about the wonderful Pharlap, but I had wished it had gotten more into the personal details then with the racing stats. The writers shed great detail into the true cause of Pharlap's death. Pharlap was one of a kind and all horse lovers should absolutely read this book.

Phar Lap-the Austrailian Wonder Horse.......2000-06-16
Phar Lap was purchased for a small sum of money. In his first race, he did horribly and there were jokes about him being "fast as lightning" and that being the source of his name.
His exercise rider one day decided to try something different, to hold him back and it worked.
From there he went undefeated until the handicappers put so much weight on him that he struggled into a second place.
His part-owner decided to ship him to America to race in some races. He won his first race but the next day he died from a mysterious colic.
The mystery of his death is still a mystery today.
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK AND I RATE IT A PERFECT 5!
Book Description
In this packable guide you'll find 35 of the best rides in Arizona's mountain country.
Customer Reviews:
Worst Guide Book I've Ever Seen..........2007-06-19
I am a long time resident of Sedona and Flagstaff. I've hiked and mountain biked the trails in both locations many, many times because my job requires me to be on these trails. I have never used this book but I can't count how many times I've been stopped on the trails to help some lost hiker or biker who has relied on this book for accurate information.
The problem: many trails are mis-named; They recommend mountain biking on trails that are in Wilderness Designated area (bike fines for any biker who rides these; Directions are wrong.
Another problematic issues is that Falcon Guides also supplies trail information to www.trails.com therefore thier website is inaccurate as well!
If you are looking for an accurate guide that will not get you lost buy any of Cosmic Rays Books on hiking and biking or the Mangum's hiking books.
Please don't buy this book. I don't want to have to find your bleached bones on the trail!!!!
This is almost all forest roads.......2007-05-23
I was getting ready for a moutain biking trip to Sedona +/- Flagstaff. I got this book to prepare. Out of 25 rides listed for Flagstaff, I found 2 that I'd even consider. The rest were all roads. I believe there might be an audience for this, but those folks really just need a Forest Service map and can pedal anywhere there's an unimproved road.
For the rest of us who want to go *mountain biking* -- we're looking for something more.
An excellent vistor's guide to the Flagstaff area.......2002-11-28
I've visited the Flagstaff area on a regular basis since 1980. We planned a 4-day, late-November vacation around several books ordered from Amazon.com. Only the Grubbs book arrived by the time we left Southern California. Off my 16-year-old son and I headed for Arizona with the book and our matching Specialized Stumpjumpers. We did 3 of the author's rides rides and found the book accurate as to location, distance, and intensity of the rides. For me, a roadie with limited mt. biking skills the book was outstanding. My son, a good racer, enjoyed the time also. We will be back to do more rides from Grubb's book.
Where's the single track?.......1999-12-23
This is a collection of mostly oddball rides done by the author of several of Falcon Press' hiking guides. He seems to prefer too many long rides through the trees on washboardy forest service dirt roads without much of a mountain bike feel to them. You can do most of the rides in a car. There needs to be more attention to what mountain bikers really like . . . carving single track trail with varied surface over interesting terrain (i.e. some rough, some rocky, some steep, some smooth and some easy), views, cool destinations and more loop rides. Nice try for a first edition. However, the author is not really a mountain biker, just a hiker taking a stab at what he thinks mountain bikers would like. Ho-hum.

Roget's 21st Century Thesaurus - paperback.......2007-09-13
My criticism is only related to the very small type used in the paperback version-I can't read it at all without a magnifying glass. I also have the hardback version of this thesaurus and it is wonderful-I would give it 5 stars. Wanted another thesaurus for another location but the paperback is useless to me because ot the tiny print.
Great Reference Book!!!!!!.......2007-07-03
This book has been a great help to me while writing my college papers. The synonyms are very accurate and the thesaurus has a wide range of words I never even thought would be in here. You will love this book, if you are looking for a simple, clear cut view of a specific word, or the root of a word, and the synonyms and antonyms of that word. I love this book. It is my only thesaurus reference book I have in my personal library.
This Thesaurus Works.......2007-05-12
I had been using a thesaurus from another company that was so frustrating that I searched for one that actually gave me the althernative words I needed. I found Roget's 21st Century and couldn't be happier with its many options and descriptions. After ordering my copy, I found another Roget's thesaurus that I had lost years ago, and although it was older, it was still better than the other company's (Webster). I believe Roget's is the most helpful thesaurus for writers and am pleased for the opportunity to say so.
Most useful thesaurus ever!.......2007-03-30
As a professional editor and non-traditional college student (English major), I frequently need a thesaurus to select the most precise terms for a wide variety of applications. This particular thesaurus is excellent. It is broad in scope and the Concept Index is a fantastic tool that I have used again and again. I had a previous edition and ordered the third as soon as I saw that it was out. (My husband is also a writer and we had been stealing it from each other. Now we each have one and I'm ordering another for my desk at work.) Keep in mind that a thesaurus is best used to find words that you already know. Don't use it to sound fancy - if you aren't sure of the exact definition of a word, look it up in a good dictionary or use another word. One more caveat: the font size in the mass market edition is extremely small. Happy Hunting!

The Model RR Guide to Freight Yards
Customer Reviews:
Very Helpful Guide.......2007-06-01
Excellent guide to setting up yards on your model railroad. This book covers how yards are used, what tracks go where and why and also has a section on staging yards. Even has yard layouts that you can use as is or modify them to fit your layout. Small, medium and large yards are all represented. I used this as a guide to set up a staging yard on my layout and fell confident that I will have a yard that not only looks good but will function well. I will also us this to set up the other yards on my layout.
Could Have Been Better.......2006-09-27
I was a bit disappointed by this book. It started off very well but then wandered off in a direction I did not want to take.
It does a fair job of introducing the various trackage to be found at many yards, explaining the routing and usage. There were a few topics, such as gravity or hump yards, which were missing but the general introduction was well done. After that point, though, it bogged down.
Most of the book is spent looking at real yards and explaining how they were adapted for modeling purposes on various layouts. This would seemingly be a very good idea since the purpose of the book is to teach the reader about how to model yards effectively. In execution, though, it leaves a bit to be desired. It reads like a transcript of a running commentary on a model operating schedule. This accomplishes the basics of the purpose but makes for dry and uninteresting reading.
Something that helps the book is the addition of sidebar articles on various topics. These address specific issues and are, on the whole, well written. They address such issues as saving space with yard ladders, throat design and even the look and feel of a yard. A final section on cards and waybills is also well written.
After his excellent treatment on passenger equipment and operations, I expected more. The information is in there but it takes some effort.
Absolutely outstanding railroad reference book. :D.......2005-10-14
I work in the video game industry and am working on a game that has a railroad level in it. These model railroad books are the perfect reference! The whole book is filled with great ideas and each idea is supported with real photographs. A+ One of the best
"reference" books I've ever purchased!
