Book Description
The carpenter has a very fine cat who is known as "Mrs. Chippie"...
-- from the diary of Commander F. A. Worsley, captain of Shackleton's Endurance
When Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship Endurance became trapped in the Antarctic ice, all twenty-nine members of the crew were pushed to their limits of survival, including Mrs. Chippy, the ship's estimable cat. Fortunately for posterity, Mrs. Chippy left a diary of the ordeal.
Closely based on the true events of Shackleton's heroic journey, and illustrated with authentic photographs taken by Frank Hurley, expedition photographer, Mrs. Chippy's Last Expedition is a firsthand account of one of the greatest adventures in history--from a unique point of view.

A nice book if your kids don't ask "So what happened to Mrs. Chippy?".......2005-11-28
**SPOILER**
Just so you know, Mrs. Chippy does not make it out of the adventure. The book does not cover this, but if you have inquisitive kids, they might find the actual story quite distressing.
On the last page, Mrs. Chippy ponders what adventures tomorrow will bring her. Sorry to say Mrs. Chippy, tomorrow you and the sled dogs get shot (but unlike them, at least you don't become stew).
South Bound Cat.......2004-09-30
After seeing the IMAX movie about Shackelton in Richmond, VA, my wife and I had to get some books about this expedition and the incredible story of survival. We have two cats and I thought my wife would like this book. As I read through the book, I laugh out loud and some of the "commentary" from Mrs. Chippy. If you have ever lived with a cat, you can see exactly what she is talking about.
We also got "South" by Shackelton. Mrs. Chippy gives a less doom-and-gloom factual account than that book, but still maintains the essence of what is happening during the voyage. I thoroghly enjoyed this book.
Entertaining for cat lovers or Shackleton fans.......2003-02-10
Mrs Chippy's Last Expedition is an entertaining story of Ernest Shackletons journey to Antarctica as told from the perspective of the true-life on board cat who was named Mrs. Chippy. The story is told in journal form and will delight cat lovers with a keen view of the adventure as only a cat would see things. Caroline Alexander does an excellent job of capturing the intelligence and demeanor of cats as in this passage. "The dogs were barking like mad... i suspect they are bewildered much of the time by what goes on around them." Entertaining for both cat lovers and as an adjunct to any book on the true Shackleton adventure. I highly recommend Alfred Lansings account Endurance: Shackletons Incredible Voyage although Caroline Alexander herself also wrote a serious account after this Mrs Chippy cat diary version. Giving it 3 1/2 stars....4+ if you are a cat lover.
A new point of view for a familiar story.......2002-10-29
I really enjoyed this book. Throughout the book, you learn about the men on the Endurance, what their characters were like, and what life was like on the ship, all from the point of view of a cat.
Of course, the ending is sad, but Caroline Alexander does not dwell on the details of Mrs Chippy's demise.
This story will appeal to many, animal lovers like myself, history buffs, and anyone interested in seeing how man handles himself in times of great stress.
Endearing, but bring Kleenex.......2002-03-11
Let me first say that this book was given to me as a marvelously thoughtful gift after I put my cat to sleep. The giver, knowing how much I like reading about Scott, Franklin and Shackleton, discovered this marvelous little book about a cat on Shackleton's famous South expedition. It was amazingly thoughtful, except the giver had no idea what happened on the South Expedition.
Now, I must confess to dunderheadedness in reading this book the minute I received it. I knew what happened. Still, thanks to Alexander's marvelous writing I so fell in love with the indomitable spirit of Mrs. Chippy that I fully expected Alexander would fudge the story a bit and take Mrs. Chippy along. Mrs. Chippy meets her fate with grace and dignity -- as peacefully as my beloved cat. It's not horrible, not maudlin, but very emotional.
This is definitely a better book to give to an expedition enthusiast and cat lover whose cat is still living. Even then, the reader is bound to shed a tear or two. The reader who has just put their beloved cat to sleep is going to cry her heart out.

Quite Dissapointed With This Book.......2007-05-03
The writing is good and the humor is fun and the author sounds like a witty a guy. However, the book is more of an unabridged sales brochure for the sale of commercial self-steering systems. This book is basically a relative comparison of commercial/turn-key products to guide purchase. For those sailors who can solve all problems with the check book, this is fine. For those of us who are builders, this book is of little if any use.

Ps. For a much more indepth view of self-steering, theory and practice, I recommend Letcher's book on the subject.
sailboat self-steering primer.......2007-04-10
I enjoyed reading this primer on self-steering devices. I now have a thorough knowledge of what's on the market and even some history. My only gripe is that the pricing for these units are not current but that's to be expected. Very informative
A big disappointment.......2006-01-15
I am looking to equip my sailboat with a self steering system and had hoped that this book would give me more background information than what is available on the internet. This book did not teach me anything new about self steering than what I had already researched on the various product web pages on the internet. In fact some of the commercial product web pages have more informative competitive comparisons on them.
It seems that the author is filling space with way too many general, common sense statements, diagrams and repetitive chapter descriptions.
I had also hoped to get more information about building your own system but the chapter dedicated to this is only 6 out of 200+ book pages which gives you an idea of how little in depth it is.
I will say that the chapter about materials is informative; again, you don't get rid of the impression that the author is filling space when you see tables about melting points of base metals...
Overall a very big disappointment
Windvanes from Soup to Nuts.......2005-09-11
This is a well-written, easy to understand book on everything you would ever want to know about the very technical topic of wind and water steering vanes for sail boats. I especially like the fact that the author does a good job of comparing various products on the market in terms of both performance and price. There is even information on buying used equipment and/building your own. I found this book invaluable in helping me determine which way to go for my 43' ketch.

This book is awesome!.......2004-03-08
Bill Morris has created a new nautical classic with his book, The Windvane Self-Steering Handbook. For owners and future owners of windvane steering systems, this is definitely a "boating bible" on the same scale as Nigel Calder's works on diesel mechanics and general boat maintenance. For the first time I actually understand what a windvane is, how it really works, how to select one for my boat (a Tayana 37), how to install it, and how to sail with it. I'm still not sure which make or model I want to buy, as I'm still trying to decide, based on the manufacturer specs and prices given in Chapter 5. The book covers the subject of galvanic corrosion with incredible detail, and, unlike any other book on the market that I'm aware of, it gives loads of information on windvane maintenance and customization. To top it off, Morris made the whole thing readable with his zany stories and highly opinionated wise cracks about everything from hull design to ordering parts in seedy, far-flung tropical isles. Who would think that a book about windvanes, of all things, would actually be fun to read? This is definitely the best how-to boating book to come out in many years. For the price, it's one of the smartest book purchases I've ever made.

Absolutely Incredible.......2005-01-06
Simon Bisley is rivaled only by greats such as Alex Ross and H. R. Giger in terms of painterly ability. This undertaking is absolutely stunning. Most of the book is drawings, which we rarely seem to see, so seeing the process is wonderful. The imagery Bisley depicts in this book is simply awesome. Depicting several Biblical scenes Bisley does what he does best. The raw emotion exerted and depicted in these works is breathtaking at times. The few color works serve to only enhance the power exhibited in his drawings. There is some nudity in the book so be cautious if buying for a classroom, and some may find the material offensive due to religious content and or interpretations Bisley has created. If you like Simon Bisley this is an absolutely MUST HAVE.

Great book.......2007-07-17
Simon Bisley is a very unique artist. He has done covers for bands like Danzig and did a lot of the art work for FAKK 2, Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.2. (IBooks), the successor to the classic animated film, Heavy Metal. The cover picture you see is from FAKK 2. The model is Julie Strain. See my Listmania list for more science fiction art books.

Pop-Up. For kids........2007-05-06
Book is best suited for kids 3 1/2-6 yrs old (old enough to know who TMNT are, young enough to get a kick out of pulling the tabs on the pop up pages). A little confusing as it obviously is summarizing a longer more complex story --heavy on action/movement, because it is a pop up book.
