Pink dolphins--and yes, in the Amazon River the flamingo-colored mammals do exist--are believed by Brazilians and Peruvians to take human form, impregnate women, lure lovers to an underwater paradise, and in various ways drive those who encounter them mad. They seem to have worked their magic on science writer Sy Montgomery, who journeys through rain forests and sunken cities in a mad-dash pursuit of the enigmatic creatures.

Despite encounters with piranha-filled waters, toxic ants, and large rats--not to mention boat failures, foreign language problems, and alternate blasts of sun and rain--the persistent Montgomery pushes happily on, offering a lyrical account as intoxicating as the subject itself. She eventually makes contact, swimming with them, even holding one in her arms, but that may be the least relevant aspect of the entire book. Montgomery turns nature into a bewildering drug, opening doors into cultural and biological worlds invisible to most, but which teem with as much unseen life as a drop of river water held under a microscope. --Melissa Rossi

Book Description

Scientists call them Inia geoffrensis, an ancient species of toothed whale whose origin dates back about 15 million years. To the local people of the Amazon, pink river dolphins are "botos," shape shifters that, in the guise of human desire, can claim your soul and take you to the Encante, an enchanted underwater world.

As tributaries braid into a single river, Journey of the Pink Dolphins weaves ancient myth and modern science into one woman's search for these elusive creatures. Over four separate journeys, Sy Montgomery follows the dolphins, tracing their spiritual, historical, and environmental past, present, and future. Ancient legends tell us that dolphins have guided humans for millennia, and in Journey of the Pink Dolphins, Montgomery answers their call, taking us to that perfect place where the Amazon melts into the forest, dolphins swim among treetops, and the twenty-first century dissolves into the beginning of time.

Journey of the Pink Dolphins: An Amazon Quest

Brilliant, gorgeous and sexy, Lucy and Ethel venture through the Amazon in search of the Pink Dolphins is the sense readers will get with this book.
Sy Montgomery is brilliant! The way she has interwoven science with comedy is nothing short of genius! Where others leave you bored, Montgomery draws the reader in as if they too are a guide on her fantastic journey with her intrepid side kick and photographer, Dianne Taylor Snow. Montgomery and Snow play off of each other like Lucy and Ethel, yet leave the reader with a broader knowledge of the Amazon and its inhabitants-- both animal and human. The science, humor and lore will keep the reader enthralled throughout and guaranteed to hunger for more of this genius author! They will certainly not be disappointed! Excellent photography!

2 out of 5 stars OK. so the dolphins are pink....sort of.......2007-01-07

I'm a big fan of well written adventure books and books on natural history. The best of them transcend their subject matter to arrive at bigger truths about human nature, the world, and mankind's place in it. Sy Montgomery tries mightily to link her experience up with The Bigger Story, but never manages to do it. Her attempts to be profound become almost embarrassing after a while.

Sy writes a nature column for the Boston Globe and it shows. Everything of interest she has to say in this book could have been said in a column or two. What she's done in this book is take that column and simply keep repeating it over and over and over. Thus we hear narrative after narrative from the locals about how the bufeo live in an enchanted underwater city and come up on land periodically to seduce women. We spend day after day in a boat with her exclaiming "There's one! And there's another one!" After a while I found myself thinking "Sy, you go out in the boat and look for the bufeo. I'll lounge here on the hotel veranda and have some refreshments until you get back. Have a nice time."

Unlike some reviewers, I didn't find anything `magical' or particularly poetic about her descriptions of the environment. It's not that she's a bad writer - clearly she isn't - but she describes things the way a columnist would describe an exotic local for readers planning their next vacation - the size of the trees, the depth of the water, the different kinds of plants and bugs and wildlife you may encounter, with some attempt to make it all sound beautiful.

She does give some superficial history of the Amazon Basin, a little evolutionary history of dolphins, some "highlights" types of descriptions of a couple of towns and villages - everything you need to know to enhance your vacationing experience. She meets a lot of people along the way and dutifully describes the physical appearance of most of them. She tries to instill a little personality in each of them but can't pull it off, so even these encounters take on the quality of "And then I met this tanned woman wearing khaki shorts who was interested in manatees."

In the end, we have gone on a trip with Sy and visited a local market or two, admired the opera house at Manaus, caught some glimpses of the pink dolphins, listened to various natives tell the same legend, went to the funeral of a drowned child, dodged a snake or two, and got sweaty in the jungle. If you had any interest in pink dolphins before you started the book, you'll be over it by the time this trip ends.

This review is based on a partial read. As a nature lover, I was excited to dive into this book after reading the reviews, but it turned out to be so bad that I couldn't stand to go beyond page 73. On page 35, I was taken aback by the comparison of the flavor of a fruit to "a mouthful of semen." What is such a gross comment doing in a nature book?? I shook my head and kept reading until I got to the superstitious nonsense about Encante. That's when I decided to toss it in the trash.

2 out of 5 stars Fascinating but Frustrating.......2003-03-10

As someone who's interested in the Amazon, its people, culture, geography, fauna, flora and other subjects, I read this book for its fascinating topic. However, this is a very mixed bag. There are moving sections, as when she describes the genocide perpetrated against the native peoples by Europeans (you would not believe the atrocities and torture they visited the Indians, whom they considered lower than animals - much worse in its ferocity than the Holocaust of WWII). The writing can be quite bad at times (at one point, her powers of description comes up with a fruit she tried, "bitter as semen"). But the worse is, she seems to be a very bad science writer and researcher. Who edited this book? Certainly not people versed in science or Portuguese. She gets everything in Portuguese wrong. The scientific names and terms are often misspelled. Proceed with caution.

5 out of 5 stars enchanting travelogue and work of natural history.......2003-02-04

I loved this book! Sy Montgomery is a talented writer, able to put you in exotic places with vivid descriptions, I almost felt I was in the Amazon. She really brought it to life, I look forward to reading another book of hers I have purchased, "Search for the Golden Moon Bear."

The book focuses on the author's quest for the pink dolphin, but really it is a journey to find not one but two dolphins. I don't refer to the other species of dolphin that lives in the Amazon, the tucuxis (one which she also covers in the book), but for two sides of the same animal. On the one hand she searches for the pink dolphin, the bufeo in Spanish or boto in Portguese, a living animal of which little is known about in comparison with many other dolphin species. Living in the most massive river system on earth, one connnected to innumerable lakes in the rainy season, in waters often black as coffee and infested with caimans, piranha, stingrays, and electric eels, in often very remote regions to which there is no reliable transportation to, it is a difficult subject to study. An example of cetaceans from an earlier geologic era, primitive when compared to modern oceanic dolphins, the pink dolphins preserve something from an eariler era, a holdover in the modern world. Montgomery and her various companions in the book struggle to get good observations of the dolphins, to try and track them, to identify individuals, to observe their behavior. The author finds that even experts who have studied the bufeo for years are often perplexed by them. She has many successes, providing much interesting information on them and a fine series of color photographs of the often startingly pink dolphins.

Montgomery though is also questing for the Encante, the mystical shape-shifting dolphin that is very real to many of the peoples who live along the mighty Amazon. Believed to exist in fabulous cities beneath the surface of the river, the locals speak in conspiratorial tones about the dolphins' magic powers and often lust for attractive humans. The natives often worry that their wives, husbands, sons, and daughters will be stolen about by the fabulous Encante, and speak with awe and reverence about the dolphins. Montgomery continually quests for the natives' views of the Encante, for their "true" tales, and for how they protect themselves against their fantastic attention.

Montgomery doesn't exlusively focus on dolphins though. Her book in part is a vivid travelogue of Amazonia, bringing us to many exotic locations. We visit Manaus, the impossible Paris of the Amazon, home to an opera house right out of a fairy tale. Built upon the backs of native jungle peoples by rubber barons, today it is a squalid city trying to embrace change. She takes us to amazing Meeting of the Waters, where for miles two tributies of the Amazon, the black River Negro and the white Solimoes, flow side by side before forming the true Amazon River. We are taken to two different nature reserves, both with differing strategies, Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo and Mamiraua, where some of the rich life and deadly beauty of Amazonia is preserved against an uncertain future. Montgomery takes us to the impossibly clear waters and white sandy beaches of the Tapajos and Arapiuns Rivers, where she actually swims with the dolphins, something not possible elsewhere in the dark and piranha-infested rivers elsewhere. She undertakes a vision quest by taking the hallucigenic Ayahuasca or "Mother of the Vine," something few Westerners have done (and for good reason).

Further, while the bufeo or boto is the star of the book, many other animals form a rich supporting cast. The odd hoatzin, a bird with claws, seemingly someting out of the Mesozoic. Electric eels, extremely common and suprisingly complex. Caimans, another seemingly prehistoric species. Amazonian manatees, gentle vegetarians that are much more intelligent than often given credit for. The weird side-necked turtle. All manner of insects, including ants. And more are given space.

Some have said that she rhapsodizes too much in the book, but I disagree. She has done her research, the book is filled with interviews with experts, and there is a nice bibliography at the end. She has skillfully combined hard science with poetry, and the effort is very worthwhile. I highly recommend it.

I found this book to be incredibly well written, bursting at the seams with imagry and science. Sy Montgomery brings to the table a mixture of "common man's" love for something simply beautiful as well as a scientists need to know the reasons why. She delicately weaves in native stories told by people indigenous to the areas she visited with a scientifically justified look at an elusive species. All this is done while painting a beautiful portrait about life in the amazon basin. This was an amazing book that made me want to read everything she's written.

In the Ragtime tradition of revolving a fictional world around a factual core, Greenberg's 1983 novel is a polished gem, which is fitting because it is partly built around a jeweler. Though The Celebrant never caught on much with the general public, its adherents were virtual zealots; to them, reading the novel bordered on having a religious experience. Its sophisticated weaving together of the life of Christy Mathewson, the Giants' great hurler and role model, with a family of immigrant Jews in New York in the first quarter of the 20th century captured their imaginations--then sadly disappeared for almost a decade before its welcome reissue.

On the surface, The Celebrant is obviously a baseball story--many of "Matty's" greatest on-field feats are meticulously recreated--as well as a story of how deeply the game reached into the lives of new arrivals from the Old World desperate to become American. On a deeper level, it is a stunning meditation on the fragile balance between the heroism of a man who won World Series rings and the hero worship of the young jeweler who made those rings for him. Its simplicity is deceptive. The Celebrant does much more than celebrate; it paints the corners of another era and another ethos with the command and control Matty himself was known to exhibit. --Jeff Silverman

Book Description

The first two decades of the twentieth century were a time of promise and innocence in America. Hardworking immigrants could achieve the American dream; heroes were truly heroic. Eric Rolfe Greenberg brilliantly and authentically chronicles the real-life saga of the first national baseball hero, Christy Mathewson, and the fictional story of a Jewish immigrant family of jewelers. In these pages Mathewson and other great players like John McGraw, Honus Wagner, and Connie Mack discover the realities behind the shining illusions: the burdens of being a hero and the temptations that taint success.

5 out of 5 stars baseball, dark and glimmering.......2007-03-05

Eric Rolfe Greenberg's The Celebrant gives us not only a fictional account of the career of Christy Mathewson, the great New York Giants pitcher of the early 1900s, but also a revealing look into hero-worship, all through the eyes and voice of a young jeweler who designs rings to celebrate Christy's masterful performances on the mound.

The book is well-crafted, the writing measured and often reverential, a wonderful example of form and function working as one. Greenberg captures the rough energy of the world of McGraw's Giants and their fans, and also paints an interesting picture of the unlikely friendship between the earthy McGraw and Mathewson, his college-educated ace. The story of the Kapinski brothers involves not only McGraw and Mathewson, but other, less savory characters such as Hal Chase and his associates on and off the field.

A dark historical baseball novel, and one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Baseball When the Only Juice was Alcoholic.......2004-11-19

If there were a Hall of Fame for baseball books, Mr. Greenberg's book would surely be inducted. Perhaps not on the first ballot, but definitely within the first few years of eligibility.

This book made me feel as though I'd stepped through a time-warp and into the stands of the Polo Grounds 100 years ago. The baseball scenes are told with an obvious fondness through the eyes of the narrator, whose life we learn about through his musings on his beloved Giants and the magnificent Christie Matthewson.

Spanning almost twenty years of baseball action, from Matty's rookie season no-hitter through his death in the mid 1920's, we are given a glimpse of how life used to be for an avid baseball fan. We are treated to encounters with John McGraw, Hal Chase, Smokey Joe Wood, Amos Rusie, and Christie Matthewson himself. Near the end of the book there is an impressive amount of time given to the 1919 Black Sox, and the tainted World Series against the Reds.

5 out of 5 stars A time machine.......2004-05-04

This book not only takes you back in time to see the early baseball legends so clearly you think you actually watched them play, but it also creates a picture of the era they lived in: life-style, business experience, ethnic experience. It would make a great choice for a high school student doing a book report or history report on the early 20th century.

The Celebrant shows us the origins of hero worship at the birth of the pop culture era - both good and bad. Jackie's love of Matty is embodied in the beauty of the rings he gave the pitcher and at the same time it is obsession that leads (at least in part) to the destruction of someone Jackie has a "real-life" relationship with (as opposed to one based on fantasy).

Some reviewers here are not satisfied with the ending, but I kind of enjoyed the ambiguity of it. This man will never be able to remember the joy of watching Matty pitch without also thinking of the personal tragedy it will forever be linked with. The great and the terrible are forever woven together in a past we see clearly through Jackie's memories.

This observation won't make sense unless you've seen the film, but there's an epilogue at the end of Barry Lyndon (and I'm butchering it) - "all these souls, whether good or evil, great or small, are all long dead and forgotten save to memory." Something like that. That's how this book plays out. It's very much in the past. Very much a part of distant memory and yet Grenberg gives us access to those memories as if they are our own. When I see picture of Matty now I smile as if I watched him play myself. And there's saddness in the memory. I remember Matty's life cut short and I remember Eli. And they both are equally real to me.

Anyway, it's a wonderful time machine and you need to have that baseball fan in your life read it - especially if it's a young person who never heard of the "immortals."

4 out of 5 stars Like Living Through The Era.......2003-06-02

Essential to understanding and enjoying "The Celebrant" is knowing just who Christy Mathewson is. The book is half the action on the field, the dugouts and the offices, half the business of the Kapinskis, a Jewish immigrant family who carry a high fanatical esteem of Mathewson. But the book is very much baseball, so understanding the "hero" status of Mathewson would be helpful, and the author assists with tiny statistical boxes laced throughout the book.

The book is also a zealous, near-stalkerish account of Mathewson, famous for his 327 wins (with the highest winning percentage of all righties), career 2.13 earned run average, as well as his blonde-haired, blue-eyed, Bucknell-educated pedigree. The tall Mathewson dominated the early 1900s by developing a "fadeaway" pitch that tailed into righthanders, more familiar as today's screwball.

The book follows the Kapinskis gradual absorption into the baseball world after the younger brother, a talented artist, designs a beautiful commemorative World Series ring in an era when such rings weren't commonplace. His business savvy and gambling-addicted brother pushes all the deals and the pair soon gain prominence not only within the jeweler's circle, but in baseball, particularly with their worshipped idol Mathewson, the rest of his teammates and hard-as-nails manager McGraw.

The book includes many historical aspects of baseball: the gambling scene that once heavily threatened to ruin the game; the pre-free agency relationship that had owners literally owning their players (who had little control over their careers), and the gradual integration of all sorts of fans into the game.

It's a good read, leaving you with the sort of feeling you get after watching a long baseball movie based on fact.

I bought this book many years ago. I'm surprised it's still in print -- It should have never been in print. It is a contrived historical novel with fictional characters of zero intrest. ...

This book is a powerful journey through time and space; an exploration of Truth and Spirit that takes the reader through history and into the future. The writing is deeply thought-provoking. So many books of this genre can be pretty mindless pap, but not this one. A Spiritual journey is full of joy, terror, pain and pleasure -- and so is this book. If you are looking for an in depth exploration of alternative spirituality, this book is highly recommended by me.

                  5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Deck! (4.5 Stars).......2006-09-19

"Many times life makes us feel impotent--we wish to do so many things but we're stuck. Please realize that even in these times of aimless wandering, we are learning. Let us be patient in our spiritual quest for knowledge." - Sylvia Browne

In the 50-card Heart and Soul deck, popular psychic and author Sylvia Browne reminds us that life is a gift that we must nurture and treasure. Replete with colorful artwork, this deck provides Sylvia's wisdom on topics such as working through mental pain, transforming weakness, living with grief, navigating your chart, dealing with dark souls, eliminating deceit, handling divorce, nutrition and exercise, and much more.

One side of the card depicts a particular theme, while the other side offers Sylvia's commentary on the topic. Some of the sage advice you'll find in the Heart and Soul deck includes:

Your Reputation - People may try to ruin your reputation and this can hurt. But remember, it can only hurt your *feelings*. The world will forget, so don't hold on to bad publicity or what other say. You and God know the truth, so let the rest of it go.

Overcoming Adversity - Adversity is the roadblock in life's path--the boss who never gives you a compliment; the house that can't be fixed up; a jealous family member...but instead of viewing these things as obstacles, look at them as building blocks for your personal growth.

Releasing Guilt - Guilt is a spiritual killer. The only place guilt has in your life is if you did something to another person with malice--for example, intentionally harming someone. Otherwise, guilt is a useless exercise that destroys spiritual growth.

Walking Away from Betrayal - It's a familiar refrain: "Why was I betrayed when I gave my all?" Know that going through this challenge is part of your chart. Don't fall into questioning, bitterness, or beating yourself up--simply walk away from this experience.

Risking Failure - Failure is a joyless word. Without risk, there can be no gain. If you don't go out on a limb, you will never see the lovely view!

Although this is a truly gorgeous deck with mostly uplifting advice, a few things don't set right with me. For example, with the Working Through Physical Pain card, it says "...Relax--we only have to be as sick as we wish to be." I can't imagine someone in pain with an illness like cancer being comforted by such a card! The implication is that this person "wishes" to be stricken with cancer. Another problematic card is Avoiding Rumors which says "...If you are doing what you feel God wants, then rumors won't hurt you." Huh? I beg to differ, especially based on personal experience!

I feel that the Heart and Soul deck is a great set of cards, with only a few sticking points. The beautiful colors and encouraging wisdom will likely empower and comfort on many levels. I feel this is an especially good deck for therapists, as well as healers who enjoy presenting clients with upbeat tokens. Fans of Sylvia's will no doubt LOVE this deck.

Hey evangelist, I find it interesting you bash on her work with the same crap each time you bother to post a review. Maybe it's due to the fact that you've never actually read any of her work? Or maybe you lack creativity, who knows...But one things for sure, Sylvia Browne probably has more comprehension of religions & spirituality in her little finger than you do in your entire closed mind. Demonic, ha!

The Heart & Soul Angel Cards can be used in combination with the Harmony Angel Cards for a double reading to learn your next steps from the angels, or on their own to identify your true heart's desire and soul's purpose and work to achieve them. The beautifully illustrated cards are divided into 4 suits of 12: Heart's Desire Angel Cards, Mystical Animals Cards, Soul's Purpose Cards, and the Sacred Hallows Cards. The suits can be used for readings in various layouts either separately or together, for either a quick overview or a more in-depth look at your life or a particular situation. The accompanying book describes the overall meaning of the four suits, the inherent meanings of each and every card, as well as several different ways to lay them out with sample interpretations.

                  5 out of 5 stars Cool!.......2007-05-31

These are realy cool! I also have the "Harmony Angel Cards". I kinda got them by accident, if there really is such a thing. I am in One Spirit Book Club and they came because I forgot to cancel the upcoming selection. Then I was gonna return them but some little voice said "Open the box" (rather loudly when I tried to ignore it, too). The minute I saw them, I loved them. I have other cards, but these are the best. They seem to provide more meaningful info, at least more meaningful to me. Yeah, they are pretty, but BESIDES that. . .

Like all these cards, there is the deck plus a book to provide more info than that on the card. So you draw some cards and see what you get. You can ask a question first, or you can ask for general guidance. You draw the number of cards the book tells you to, or that you believe appropriate. Personally, I like to do things by the number 3. So, lets say you shuffle and draw 3 cards. Oh WOW! I just drew "The Unicorn of Unity Consciousness"--the card of polarity balance and oneness with all that is--links Raphael, Gabriel, Mirabiel, Dokiel (Gabriel is a very important Archangel to me. He also loves to travel with creative people, including writers and musicians). There is a full page of very small print that follows that tells you what the card means. I tell you what, it sure rings right with me. I mentally asked for guidance right before I pulled these 3 cards and asked if I was moving "forward". Laugh if you want, but the answers I just received mean something to me--BIG TIME! I also drew the "Solar Lion with Ankh of the Sun Lords" which again mentions striving toward oneness of spirit. It also mentions Adam Kadmon, which means something special to me, as well as other things that do. My third card was "Eth: Guardian Angel of Time", which also provides a full page of info that really means something to me.

Whether you believe in using these cards for guidance or you just want to play with them, they are cool to have--and this set is really nice. I'll tell you this, though, I have drawn from the deck several times, and so far, I have received what I believe to be useful guidance.

OK, so if you think I'm nuts, that's OK. Normal? Been there. Done that. It's overrated!

If nothing else, play with the cards to awaken your inner child, so he/she can play once in awhile. People are too darned serious and too darned stressed these days. Let a little peice of you come out and play once in awhile, and DARE TO IMAGINE, like you did when you were a child.

                  5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Cards.......2007-04-12

These cards are absolutely beautiful. I'm an avid collector of Tarot and Oracle decks. When I saw these, I fell in love with the colors and designs. Very easy to use deck to find specific information out. Easy to use because you can focus on just "heart desires" or "soul desires"! I highly recommend!

4 out of 5 stars Rice' Is A Very Good Teacher.......2004-07-09

I have taken classes from Rice' and every class has taught me something new and inspired me creatively. I'm an experienced editor and agree better proof reading was needed but her examples and information and her association with other artists included in the book are the most important reason for buying it. If her name is on a book, buy it. She has a new book coming out in October 2004 and I am anxious to buy it too.

5 out of 5 stars this book is worth TEN workshops.......2004-05-01

Overflowing with ideas and insider technique tips, Rice and friends present us with bountiful inspiration in this enthusiastic, well-illustrated book. It's not just a must-read but a must-OWN if you're involved with paper and fiber arts. The tip about silk screen ink (for art on fabric) saved me weeks of reinventing the wheel, and that's just one very small note in a book chock FULL of fabulous ideas and projects. Thank you, Rice!

5 out of 5 stars Stamp Artistry by Rockport Press.......2004-02-21

This book is delightfully full of creative uses of rubber stamps by talented artisans in many mediums. The author has explained every project in easy-to-understand terms. Projects are separated into sections, such as "for the home," which makes it easy to select a project, and each section has a well-written introduction by the author. I didn't find one project I didn't like or wouldn't want to reproduce. The photography is wonderful! Any little petty glitches, which you'll find in any book, are easily overlooked because of the innovative subject matter and the masterful photos. (Even the revered "Chicago Manual of Style" has typos!) If you want something a little different, this is the book I recommend. It's worth every penny I spent on it, and I look forward to more great books by the author!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Projects, Talented Artists, Poor Proofreading!!!!.......2004-01-01

This Instructional Project Book offers wonderful projects by today's renowned top artists in stamping, clay, collage, etc. However typographical errors distract from the step-by-step instructions.
Xyron is one of the most "top of mind" brands in the Arts and Crafts industry, but was referred to as Zyron several times throughout the book. I noticed misspelled words such as Dall instead of Doll and poor sentence structure.
I do not blame the author, but the Publishing House for proofreading errors. This shows lack of knowledge and details for the art form in which they are representing.
When I buy a book of this price point and with step-by-step instructions I expect top-notch editing!!!!
