Book Description
The book presents an integration of existing ecosystem theories in such a comprehensive way as to enable a full ecological and theoretical pattern to be presented. It shows that ecosystems and their reactions may be understood, provided that all basic systems ecology is applied to different aspects of the properties of ecosystems. Since the publication of the previous two editions of this book, ongoing research and discussions on an international scale have greatly clarified and enhanced this pattern. This progress is presented as Chapter 16 in this new, third edition. It is shown that the integrated ecosystem theory presented can be applied to explain various ecological observations and rules.
Audience: Researchers and decision makers whose work involves the study of ecosystems and ecology. This book is also recommended for use in graduate courses.
Book Description
hen ESPN went on the air in September 1979, the company believed that there was room on television for dedicated sports programming. At the time, sports programming was considered a risk, and ESPN a maverick. Twenty-five years later, ESPN is the leader in sports, influencing the way we think about sports, the way the media covers sports, and how we perceive athletes. ESPN has grown from one cable station into a sports empire. ESPN25, the book, celebrates the people behind ESPN, the sports they cover, the athletes that play their hearts out, and, of course, the fans who care. The book includes the Best and Worst of Everything in Sports Over the Past 25 Years, an illustrated foldout of the Top 35 Athletes of the Past 25 years, the funniest sports quotes of the past 25 years, the DVD, an intro by Berman, Chuck's essay on the Highlights Culture and how it has changed the world of sports over the past 25 years. Bound into the book is a free DVD containing the ever popular, and now classic, ESPN SportsCenter commercials. Beginning in May '04 and running through September '04, ESPN will feature special 25th Anniversary programming, including television and radio specials, magazine features, and website contests. Perfect for both the serious and casual sports fan, ESPN25 relives some of the greatest moments in sports on each and every page.

Blech.......2005-05-15
ESPN 25 seems as if it were put together by a high school senior trying to do a quick job on a term paper. The prose and content make the book flow about as well as a lactose-intolerant person's colon after downing a double-thick milkshake and grilled cheese.
The book is worthwhile only if you can get it for a steep discount, and even then only if the DVD is still intact.
Great book!.......2004-12-13
I read this on a 2-hour flight to miami.
Made the flight seem like 20 minutes.
Very good read!
Let's Go to the Videotape.......2004-11-17
It's hard to imagine ESPN starting off way back when as a small cable operation that appeared not to have a future some 25 years later. And yet ESPN has forever influenced and changed sports broadcasting. This book takes a look back at some of the highlights of those 25 years, along with anecdotes from some of sports' greatest moments and ESPN anchors. Heck with the foreword by Chris Berman, what more could you ask for? There's even a brief history of how sports has been reported since the proverbial "beginning of time." And throughout the book are 'best of" lists: the best draft pics, the best sports mascots, best venues to watch a sports event, even ESPN's choices for the greatest athletes of the last 25 years, along with numerous others.
The book helps capture what those crazy early days of ESPN were like, along with an idea of what things are like around there nowadays. I remember watching some of the "early days" of ESPN up to the present. It's amazing to think ESPN has now become an institution. This book is not an "in depth" history of ESPN, there are other books for that. But it is an enjoyable, easily read book that details the ESPN experience and how that experience has changed us all.
And yes points off on the included DVD, it's a shame some of the classic SportsCenter commericals like the Y2K aren't on here.
The book is clutch, the DVD not so much.......2004-10-23
The book is awesome - being 25 years old, this book pretty much covers sports history in my lifetime. However, the DVD leaves much to be desired (and I must admit, a big reason why I purchased this). Note, I don't know what the other guy was thinking, but the Y2K commercial is NOT ON THE DVD. There is no Charley Steiner saying "FOLLOW ME TO FREEDOM!". Unless I got a different edition. There are other commercials that are missing, like the one where the Syracuse Orangeman doing donuts in Terry Labonte's car. Overall, a good purchase. But don't expect much from the free DVD.
disappointing dvd.......2004-10-22
can comment on DVD - have been writing to ESPN to get a "best commercial" volume out for years - many great ESPN commercials missing - such as "Electric football" commercials and "Sports Center the cartoon" commercials - ESPN has a great opportunity to make some money on a comprehensive DVD of the commercials but fails to do so...

This is great - until recently I could only find Italian/English. I am very pleased.
Book Description
This graphic novella by comic artist Sam Brown, whose website (explodingdog.com) has become an online phenomenon, entwines unusual fable with unconventional comic style. Combining the deceptively simple lines of Matt Groening, the deft and elegant colors of Herg‚, the cinematographic eye of Eric Drooker, and the dark humor and nostalgic sadness of Edward Gorey, Amazing Rain is Sam Brown's most beautiful novella to date. Presenting a story within a story, a fable embedded in a narrative of urban disenchantment, Brown's latest work surpasses the drawings for which he is already known. In an era when graphic novels have reached a critical mass in the popular consciousness, Sam Brown's highly personal style stands out in the crowd. This book will delight both the new convert and the longtime fan.

Wonderful.......2006-01-14
Sam Brown is a creative genius! This is a great book. Fun to read and look at, it pretty much has something for everyone. Highly recommended!
WOW!.......2005-01-21
A very good book, strang, and too short but its worth all the money.
Simply Amazing!.......2004-11-04
I suspect that there are two types of people in the world: those who love Sam Brown's www.explodingdog.com and those who haven't discovered it yet!
I fall squarely into the first category. I am always thrilled when new work appears on the site. Why? Because Exploding Dog is a unique art concept. It is a semi-collaborative art project where visitors are invited to submit phrases, ideas, or titles, and drawings are created to fit. Well, kind of. Sam Brown has a unique vision. Quite often, the drawings he creates take a radically different approach to what might seem like a straightforward subject. Many truly defy explanation... yet are still wonderfully interesting.
The world that Sam has created for his art is one inhabited by stick figure people, robots, rockets, and various small creatures. All are drawn in a minimalistic linear style, which at first glance may seem unsophisticated. Spend a little time really looking, though, and you'll be quite surprised. These drawings can convey a huge amount with only simple lines and (generally) flat areas of color.
In addition to the drawings featured on the site, there are also Exploding Dog shirts, prints, and books available. These items help many people get their Exploding Dog "fix" during the occasionally lengthy periods between updates to the site. Soon to be added to this collection is Amazing Rain. 116 full color pages, fantastic from beginning to end. In this somewhat dark, odd tale, Sam "weaves a story within a story, a fable intertwined in a narrative of urban disenchantment and pastoral escape." I won't even begin to try to explain or capture the essence of it. Trying to do so would not only be impossible, but never stand up to actually seeing, reading, and absorbing this book.
More interesting than any illustrated novel and vastly more sophisticated than any comic, this book is a literary and visual art piece. One of the greatest strengths of Amazing Rain is that, although this is a continuous story, each page works on its own in the same way that the single panel drawings featured on Exploding Dog do. I can think of no other work that stands up in this way.
All in all, I have nothing but the highest praise for Sam and his most recent effort. My only complaint is that there aren't a couple hundred more pages!

Now Available in Paperback! No one engages the natural world the way Jeff Corwin does. One of America's favorite nature-show hosts, Corwin demonstrates awe and respect for nature in a way that is both wildly funny and educational. In this beautiful book, illustrated with his own photographs, he reminisces about his at-times-perilous and often hilarious journeys as he explores the fantastic relationships among the diverse flora and fauna in four exotic ecosystems: the Sonoran Desert of Arizona; the Savannah of southeastern Africa; the Costa Rican rainforest; and the Llanos grassland in Venezuela. From a lizard that ejects a blood-like squirt from its eyes when in danger to perhaps the most bizarre turtle on the planet-we meet some wonderfully unique creatures and learn about their interdependence and competition in their natural habitats.

On the wild side..........2007-07-09
Join Jeff Corwin as he shows us the dry, hot desert of Arizona, the life and death struggle in southeastern Africa, the rain forests of Costa Rica, and the grasslands of the Venezuela. Along the way we learn about life, death, love, and the web of nature. He also pops in facts and short stories, many of which are as funny as you can get without a Nun's outfit, a donkey and a jar of peanut butter.
The book itself is a lovely hardcover, with full color photos and something I would be proud to have on my coffee table if I had a coffee table. And it is so enjoyable to read you could easily finish it in a day if you wanted to.
The Best Nature Book Out There.......2005-10-28
Jeff Corwin is not only a great tv personality but is also a very good author. I have read his book like three times already and each time I read it I like it even more. The pictures, all of which he took himself, are great and I like how he goes into his life experiences with animals. Also, I like how he sprinkles humor throughout the book. I have learned so much from Jeff Corwin and he is the reason I am majoring in Environmental Science. He has made me realize how important it is to protect the environment and all of the animals in it.
Poetic imagery for the Natural world.......2005-10-17
This book is great! Altho I am a big fan of Jeff's and the Jeff Corwin Experience, I am still blown away by this book. Jeff describes everything vividly, yet in a beautifully poetic way (i've never heard of so many diff ways to describe the sunset). I was really surprised b/c he isn't like that on the show. I loved that many lesser-known animals are introduced, as well as the more common ones. Also, I loved that Jeff gave us the pecularities/specialties of each animal so I'm not just reading the same old boring stuff that I've read in too many nature books or seen on tv. I've learned a lot of things that I never knew about (ie: the symbiosis btwn strangler fig & wasp) and Jeff describes them all so vividly that it was even better than watching the show. The only complaint I have is that there's not enough pictures. But as I read along, I realized that Jeff already painted the whole scene for me that photos would just be icing on the cake. I totally and whole-heartedly recommend this book to any nature lover!
Web of Life.......2005-09-21
Gives good complex look at the animals in different environments and shows the environmental issues challenging each place. Filled with stories from Jeff Corwin's life and his own encounters with both exotic and extraordinary animals.
Take a Walk on the Wild Side .......2004-12-06
This is a very entertaining and educational book. I'm a fan of The Jeff Corwin Experience, and this book did not disappoint me. It is very well organized and well written, and I was amazed at the way it managed to drop me right down into the middle of the Costa Rican rainforest or the African savannah. What I particularly liked was the variety of bizarre and fascinating details that Jeff adds. I found myself sharing these bizarre facts (like giant anaconda orgies that can last for weeks and weeks...woohoo!)with all sorts of people who, no doubt, thought I was some sort of animal expert now. But best of all is Jeff's obvious enthusiasm for the subject matter, particularly the topic of conservation. It's hard not to enjoy his stories when he presents them with such passion and humor. I definitely recommend this book to Jeff Corwin fans and any readers who want to take a walk on the wild side.

Educational for all ages.......2000-03-29
A wonderful educational book for all ages. Although the summary indicates this book is for children 9-12, I used this book for a presentation on the rain forest to children from 5-6 years old. The teacher of the class enjoyed the book so much, she is requesting a copy for her classroom. If anyone is considering a trip to a tropical environment with children, this would be a fabulous book to take along.
