Book Description
Tired of trying to relate pea plants, fruit flies and mice to practical horse breeding? Textbooks of general genetics rarely mention horses. Consequently our knowledge of horse genes lags well behind that of other domestic animals. Horse Genetics is one of the first books to provide a comprehensive overview of genetic principles using horses as the primary examples. The author, who has both practical and academic experience in the subject, provides jargon-free facts and ideas in the field of genetics as it relates to horses. Well-documented topics such as coat color are covered as well as parentage testing, medical genetics and gene mapping. This book presents a unique and up-to-date review of horse genetics with a clear vision for future research. Sure to become a classic, Horse Genetics is a valuable addition to the field of equine science and every modern equine practitioner's library.
Customer Reviews:
Outdated.......2003-12-29
This was probably a good book when first printed, but that 7 years ago and a lot of the information is no longer valid. Not a good reference, because although a lot is changed, none of it is reliable anymore due to age of info.
Excellent source of color genetics information.......2002-12-22
Easy to understand, comprehensive view of color genetics in horses. Does not have much outside color genetics, and very few pictures, but very thorough and in-depth, yet comprehendable reading of color genetics from a top authority.
Yes Yes Yes!.......2002-09-06
Yes! This book tells it all. Mind you, it is not simple to read. If you do not have a genetic/biologic background, it may at times be impossible to understand. Not many illustrations, and black and white only. But for the person who does have at least somewhat understanding of genetics it is a MUST HAVE!
Unfortunally here and there a little out-dated (homozygous testing for Tobiano and OLWS testing at the time not yet available).
Must Have for any Serious Equine Breeder.......2001-03-25
Dr. Ann T. Bowling was a Dir. of the Verinary Genetics Lab at UCDavis, so when you read this book you are learning from a hands on Researcher of genetics identification, linkage mapping, and choromosomal assignment of genes in horses including coat color, blood groups and explanation of DNA and microsatellite polymorphisms....Alright, sounds difficult, but being self taught through all the books I could lay my hands on, this is a modern up to the minute look at equine genetics today. If I can understand this, with a little bit of reading and applying to your own herd you will understand from a leading geneticist who has made her mark in national and international equine genetics studies. The paperback book at this price is absolutely affordable, and pictures and many graphs and charts guide you through the understanding of genetics in and easy format. For those into color pattern horses.....this is a must to update old thinking in terms of recessive and dominant genes as related to patterning genes. I have followed Ann via her reviews and write ups starting with her articles published in the Paint Horse Journal......just an absolute must read!!!
A useful addition to an Equine library........2000-12-01
This is a well-researched and compiled book; useful for the REALLY serious horse enthusiast. Filled with masses of interesting information, but possibly a little 'overloaded' with details about 'broken-coloured' horses. Contains a superb 'references' section and a well-compiled index. It is a pity that ALL the illustrations are in black and white, but this may partly account for the good value for money of this book.
Book Description
Marianna Haun wrote about research on large hearts and racehorse performance in her previous book, The X Factor. After three years of continued research and more than 1,000 horse scientifically measured by equine cardiologist Dr. Fred Fregin, Haun reports the newest findings in heart score and pedigree research. She shows readers the photos, pedigrees and actual ECG records of such Thoroughbred racehorses as Northern Dancer, Cigar, Mr. Prospector and more. Standardbred and Quarter Horse racehorses are also featured.
Customer Reviews:
Still scratching my head.......2003-06-21
After spending more than a week of trying to validate the information in Marianna Haun's latest book, I've come away less impressed by the whole X-factor theory than I was after reading the first book.
I think that there are some serious problems with Marianna's research, yet at the same time, she's onto something with merit. There is something to the whole idea of sex-linked performance traits, but I don't think that it's as important as Marianna makes it out to be, nor do I think that her research has been checked thoroughly enough to be very useful to thoroughbred breeders.
I found myself removing 5-10 double copy mares from her list just trying to get some of the pieces of the puzzle to fit together and always ending up with loose ends that couldn't be tied together. The end result is that it's probably not really possible to determine accurately from her theory if a specific horse is carrying the x-factor or will have it. Instead, the best one can probably do is to make sure that horses like War Admiral and Blue Larkspur appear in X-chromosome passing positions and hope for the best.

Book Description
Equine Color Genetics, Second Edition presents the most recent advances in color genetics to horse, donkey, and mule breeders, enabling breeders to tailor their breeding programs to maximize desired color outcomes and minimize undesired color outcomes. The book 's format bridges the gap between the scientific and lay communities without ignoring the intricate and complex issues involved in horse and donkey color genetics.Equine Color GeneticsProvides an explanation of genetic mechanisms that determine colorsDiscusses colors in sequence from less common to more commonExplains each color through the interactions of genetic phenomena that build the colors step by stepExamines patterns of white hair that may be superimposed on colorsTouches on folklore associated with horse colorsTreats donkey color in a separate sectionThe second edition presents more explicit and detailed explanations than were previously possible, as well as recently documented colors and combinations. The section on donkey colors includes the results of recent studies into the genetic control of color in this species, which will greatly assist donkey breeders as they tailor breeding programs to their own goals.

The definitive book on horse coat colors.......2007-06-08
Sponenberg has set himself the task of writing a definitive book on horse coloration, one intended to summarize all available information on the subject as of the date of its writing. The book succeeds well in describing this complex and subtle subject, where 11 identified genes control the base coloration and more than 15 the various subtle modifications to the base color. It is nicely illustrated with color photographs correlated with descriptions of the probable genotypes of many horses of several breeds, and the tables and appendices will be useful to owners and particularly to breeders who are concerned with coloration. A much more cursory description is given of donkey coloration, the genetics of which is far less well worked out. In a few hours of study I was able to answer many questions that had puzzled and intrigued me about the colors of Morgan Horses and their forebears and offspring.
Equine Color Genetics.......2004-07-20
I have the 1st edition. It was my main tool in figuring out the Grullo color genetics. There are some minor inaccuracies in color theory, but this is the best single color book that I know of on the market. For a more complete picture of color genetics I recommend, in addition, Equine Genetics & Selection Procedures, published by Equine Research, they are on the web if Amazon don't carry their books. As an example of the differences between the 2 books, Equine Genetics discusses the Isabella color which Sponenberg omits. I don't know about the genetics of Isabella, but it is real, and I can now spot them easily. Isabellas are dark yellow, with little or no white, there manes are often yellow too. Palominos have as much white as sorrels.
Sponenberg does an excellent treatment of the champayne color, it is very rare in Quarter horses, but Sponenberg tells you how to spot them. I have since seen several.
If you are only going to get one color book, get this one.
A good start but still not perfect.......2003-11-09
For the most part, this book is full of excellent information and pictures. It does, however, contain some clearly outdated information, the worst of which is the continued perpetuation of the notion of the dominant white (W) gene. It simply doesn't exist, and I was very disappointed to see that this theory was still being presented as fact.
Note SECOND edition.......2003-06-25
Note that this new SECOND edition published in 2003 is a completely different book than the first edition referred to by some earlier reviewers.
Dr. Sponenberg is a leader in this field and does a great job of bringing the latest in color genetic theory to the lay horseman.
Equine Color Genetics.......2003-04-08
This book is excellent! It describes in detail the genitics associated with different horse coat colors as well as the likelihood for achieving those colors when breeding horses. If you are breeding for color, this book will give you the possibilities of getting certain coat colors from your particular dam and sire. It cannot predict what you will get, but it can tell you not only what colors are most likely to get, but those colors that are least likely, and those that just cannot happen with the color horses you are breeding. I have now gotten 3 buckskins on the ground because I bought this book...and I had a lot of luck as well. But being new to breeding horses, this book allowed me to delve past all of the wivestales and get to the facts so that you can, at the very least, have the best possibility for the coat color you prefer. I recommend this book highly!!! I have given them to friends in who have been in the horse business forever and they have learned a great deal from this book! Everyone I know is very impressed. It is easily understood, even if you are not a geneticist. I am definately not either and I understood every word.

A Winner.......2002-01-04
I am a breeder of miniature horses and have several books on horse genetics. This book ties all the parts together; the scientific and practical. Since getting this book in September of 2001 I have it with me when I travel as well as by my bedside. I read it almost daily. This is a treasure for serious breeders lucky enough to get a copy. This book can help a breeder better their ability to improve the horse breed.
My only regret is that it is out of print and hard to come by.

The Color of Horses: The Scientific and Authoritative Identification of the Color of the Horse
ASIN: 0914327461 |
Customer Reviews:
There are better books out there on horse color........2001-08-03
This is a reprint of an old book. It contains outdated information and some incorrect information. The names used for color identification are combinations of England terms, Spanish and old west, they don't fit any one region nor are they accurate. If you truly want a treasure-trove of information, that demystifies the interrelationships of color, identifies different colors, explains the occurrence of rare colors, and discusses the responsibilities of breeders. One that features explanatory diagrams, a detailed summary of information in the appendix, and nearly 200 full-color photographs that accurately depict the different breeds and coat colors, a resource breeders will find themselves referring to again and again. Pick up Horse Color Explained by Jeanette Gower, you will be glad you did.
Good book, but outdated by the author himself.......2001-04-07
It's important for all to note that this is a *reprint* of an older book. It contains some outdated information, including some that was corrected in Sponenberg's later book. Although this one is less expensive, I suggest buying Equine Color Genetics instead.
Disgraceful. There are better books on this subject........2001-03-12
As manager of a breeding and training facility, I first read this book some years ago, and surprisingly, found myself disappointed with it. Just recently I reread this book, believing that perhaps it has more to offer than I had previously given it credit for. Sadly, I still cannot give it positive ratings.
Sponenberg is accurate on much of the genetics portion of this book. On color identification, however, he stands far below his fellow veterinarian/authors. The names he makes up for the various equine colors are ridiculous. Fellow breeders who read this most likely find it amuzing, if not insulting. To the unknowing, however, learning this information incorrectly can be detrimental to the attainment of this knowledge. Backyard breeders need to contact their breed society before employing the use of terms like these on their horses' registration papers. These are not toy poodles we're dealing with. "Cutesy" made-up names for common horse colors are not the mark of the professional breeder/registrar.
There are better books on this subject. Try "The Color of Horses: The Scientific and Authoritive Identification of the Color of the Horse" by Dr. Ben K. Green. It is well explained, easy to comprehend, direct, and professional. Though "The Color of Horses" was out-of-print for awhile, the high demand for this book has brought it back into publication.
I now own both publications of this book.......2001-02-16
and I have to admit that I rather like it. It is very different from the second book, 'Equine Color Genetics', which makes me wonder why this second edition of the first book should have been published after the first edition of the second book. Confused? So am I!
One of the best!!.......1997-11-25
I would say that this is one of the most definitive books on horse color. The author is a well known expert on horse color genetics. I gave it a 9 only because it is surpassed by his newest book on the same subject. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in horse colors. It lists not only the common colors in all their shades, but rare and unusual colors, too. The information included in this book is thorough and easy to understand. I have really gotten a lot of use from this awesome title.

Oldie but Goodie.......2004-08-24
Although science has jumped forward, this book remains one of the best books to help just about anyone understand genetics. The only reason I did not give this book a 5 star is because, due to its age, there is a lot of new information that someone studying genetics really should know that is not included. I would like to see the author update this book and publish a new edition.
If you have struggled with genetics, or just want to learn more about it, this is an excellent book!
