Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Complete and mostly accurate.......2006-10-27

How does one review a dictionary? If the aim is to arrive at a reasoned and mature assessment of the book the ideal way would be to keep it on my shelf for five years or so, noting how often I find it useful to consult it, how often I am happy with the result of the consultation, and how often I am unhappy. Unfortunately, however, the job needs to be done more quickly than that, so I shall adopt a more superficial approach, checking a selection of definitions to see how accurate and helpful they are.

Opening the book at random led the definition of "elasticity coefficient". The definition given is accurate enough as far as it goes (setting aside the presence of two undefined quantities in the equation given), but I wonder how much illuminated a reader will be who consults the dictionary in the hope of understanding the (important) difference between an elasticity coefficient and a control coefficient. The definition fails to mention that elasticity coefficients are usually called just elasticities, and it fails to give a cross-reference to "control coefficient" (perhaps just as well, as the dictionary has no entry for control coefficient), but it does give a rather unhelpful suggestion to "see controllability coefficient" --- unhelpful because following the suggestion leads only to the information that this is a "former name for elasticity coefficient". Would it not save the reader trouble just to include this information in the main entry?

What about something that I knew nothing at all about before, such as myocilin? This is apparently also called TIGR, which was news to me as I thought TIGR was The Institute for Genome Research, and that is also what the entry for TIGR says, without any cross-reference to myocilin. Anyway, myocilin is a protein of no known function expressed in many tissues---not especially muscle, despite the entry a few lines up that says that myo+ is a prefix denoting muscle. Is this important enough to justify a five-line definition? Apparently it is, because the gene for myocilin is implicated in glaucoma.

As an illustration of the maxim that one picture is worth a thousand words, the definition of "Fischer projection" runs to more than 150 words, but lacks the simple diagram that would have rendered the words more readily intelligible.

A common fault in elementary biochemistry textbooks is the lack of understanding that some authors display of the ionic states of biochemical species in neutral aqueous solution. This is now far better than it was a generation ago, but there are still some authors who have not yet seen the light. So how well does the dictionary fare? Less well than I would have hoped. Phosphoric acid derivatives are normally shown in ionized states, but carboxylic acids and primary amines do less well: threonine, thyronine, thyroxine, tranexic acid, tryptophan and tyrosine all appear in physically impossible states in the space of a few pages.

All this led me to consult the entry on "zwitterion", which defines it as "an alternative name for dipolar ion". This seemed to be an example of defining the familiar in terms of something less familiar, but I see that several textbooks do prefer the latter term. Anyway, a dipolar ion or zwitterion is "a molecule containing ionic groups of opposite charge in equal numbers". So the form of aspartate that exists in neutral solution is not a zwitterion? If we want a word that includes all the common amino acids at pH 7 we need amphion (or amphoion if we prefer it and can think of a way to pronounce it), a term that I have never encountered (in either spelling) in any paper I have seen in the biochemical literature. Anyway, it would have been nice to see more expansive definitions of these terms, and it would be hard to argue that there was no space available in a dictionary that has room for nine lines to discuss the pronunciation of Linux. It is dangerous, anyway, for a biochemistry dictionary to include terms from computing that are in danger of becoming obsolete before the ink is dry: Netscape, for example, is "a popular browser available for a variety of computers and operating systems", but this is 2006, and who uses Netscape Navigator in 2006? Have young biochemists even heard of it? Incidentally, despite the bold type there is no entry for browser.

If any of the editors read this review they will doubtless find it very pedantic. I have to plead guilty to that, but reviewers of dictionaries need to be pedantic, and in an ideal world compilers of dictionaries would be pedantic as well.

Excellent reference for the biochemist!.......2004-12-20

I have been using this book as a general reference since I bought it three years ago. It describes most terms in general biochemistry, molecular biology, organic chemistry and genetics. I find it easier to have one reference book where one can look up terms, than having to search through various textbooks to find the descriptions.

As someone involved in biochemical research, I spend loads of time reading a variety of life science journals. Just keeping up with the latest research is hard enough, but as my areas of interest become ever larger and intermeshed with other disciplines such as medicine and physics, I've found myself delving into this book more and more. But the pace of research is also a problem for a book like this, because to remain useful, new editions cannot appear fast enough to keep up with the latest batch of techniques, genes and proteins. Ultimately an Internet version of this book that gets updated on a regular basis would be the most useful. Never the less, once you get in the habit of using this dictionary, you'll want to keep it nearby when you're browsing the life science literature. Is this book good value? I think it's expensive compared to all other books, but well priced for an academic textbook. I find that using this book is still more rapid and direct than browsing the web for the definition of a word I don't know, and the brief definition given in this book is a good starting point for hunting down more detailed information.

FAIR: DEPENDING ON YOUR NEED.......2003-01-04

This revised edition of "Oxford Dictionary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology" is comprehensive, clinically relevant, and fairly up-to-date. It has a good coverage (for degree students), although that advanced researchers may need something more extensive. Its ability to correlate biochemical terms and data is appreciated. But with just over 17,000 definitions, its listed price is a bit on the high side. Buyers could get a better illustrated, more voluminous Biochem dictionary at that price.

An excellent science source.......2006-09-21

I have found some factual errors in this book, but overall it is a thorough science book for physics, chemistry, and biology. This book is an unabridged compilation of the three books in the illustrated dictionary series--Illustrated Dictionary of Physics, Illustrated Dictionary of Chemistry, and Illustrated Dictionary of Biology. Even if you are only interested in one of these topics, you still need to be aware of British versions being sold by sellers at Amazon. Unfortunately, they list them as the American version, but they're not. After a few pages of reading the British spelling for words like 'oestrogen', 'foetus', etc., you will be completely frustrated. This is the American edition of all three and a bargain too. We homeschool and use this as one of many science books. For anyone studying Biology, I would also highly recommend the National Geographic movie "In the Womb" which shows a baby developing through all 40 weeks.

One of the best books I've ever owned.......2003-04-20

My parents bought me this book in hardcover about ten years ago, and it has been indispensible. It covers a broad enough base of information so well, and with enough depth, that it has been a constant and indispensible reference for me through GCSE science in the UK, high school chemistry in the US, and even sometimes during my undergrad chemistry and physics. The illustrations are wonderful, and the explainations lucid. I would definitely recommend this for anyone with a child in school, or anyone who wants to look at a bit of basic science.

Absolutely brilliant........2001-02-14

About 15 years ago, as a 9 year old, I read the three books that make up this Dictionary of Science (the Biology, Physics and Chemistry ones). I was completely captivated by them, and read them over and over again. The science is pitched at exactly the right level for children: the colourful illustrations and short sections retain a child's attention. I went on to take biology, physics and chemistry A-levels at age 17, and went on to study Medicine at Cambridge University in England. Obviously there was more to this achievement than the Usborne books I read as a child, but I honestly do attribute much of my initial interest to them.

This book is a wonderful source of science information, the colurful illustrtaions help explain the theorys that are explained in the book. It is a book for all levels. It is not just a dictionary but a true sience resource.

This book is more than a reference book.
It is expensive but also one of its kind! Well organized, extensively covering all claimed scientific fields and has such a vast number of synonyms in each language (in English for example it presents over 22.000 cross-referenced synonyms) that could be also used as a scientific thesaurus.

The incorporation of the Greek, Italian and Latin languages in this singe volume is without doubt a great accomplishment since all the previous languages are source languages of scientific terminology of the fields of life sciences.
Although most scientific dictionaries lack grammatical information, this book presents a clear brief info that is very helpful for all those trying to compile scientific texts in a foreign language.

Closing this review it would be a mistake to overlook that in its 2590 pages one can find the modern translation of almost any term -from- and -to- any language between English Greek German Italian and Latin.

Recommendation is guaranteed since it is already trusted by major libraries worldwide:

Another Great Book by Callahan.......2002-04-06

If you are growing anything in soil you should buy this book. As mentioned, Paramagnetism is Yang and Diamagnetism is Yin. Plants are diamagnetic,when measured on a paramagnetic meter, and require paramagnetic soil to be healthy and strong. Ultimately, paramagnetic material is usually silica based rock with small amounts of iron oxide (approx.12%). But not all iron oxide is paramagnetic. As explained in many of Callahan's books, paramagnetism is essential for the healthy growth of friendly bacteria and therefore crops. Do yourself a favour and educate yourself with this book and Nature's Silent Music also by Callahan

I have owned this book for more than 5 years. It has been my collection books for a long time. This is a great reference when I was taking all my microbiology and molecular biology classes in undergrad. This book has helped me tremendously on understanding the concept and definition of the microbio for the last 2 years of my college. I cherish this dictionary a lot,I am only trying to sell it b/c of moving, and that I am no longer in microbiology field. But from the bottom of my heart, this is definitely a great resource to look up if you need a better understanding of biology.

Not what I'd hoped.......2005-03-11

From reading the other reviews, I was hopeful that buying this book would mean the end of me scouring the internet for definitions of biology terms. That didn't happen. While it has some great in-depth definitions, I just don't find about 40% of the words I look for! My concentration is genetics and immunology (which this dictionary should cover, on an undergrad level at least) and I've found this book to be more a source of frustration than aid. It was not a worthwhile purchase. So I'm still in the market for a good bio dictionary.

This book helped me survive graduate school - especially during my written preliminary exams. It is a comprehensive source of information, and it happily contained every word I wished to look up. I would not call it simply a 'dictionary', as the explanations are very in-depth and detailed. Seriously, this is one you need in your personal collection.

This book was invaluable to me during my tenure as a graduate student in molecular biology. It is very comprehensive, easy to use and to understand. It is a great asset to anyone studying a biology related field at an undergraduate or graduate level. It is particularly helpful when reading papers from research journals. Worth every penny.

Singleton's Dictonary of Microbiology and Molecular Biology is wonderfully comprehensive, very current and a bargain at $62. This dictionary at 1,000-plus pages is a must-have book.

My background is physics and I used this book in my radioecology class. I found it very helpful in looking up ecological terms I'm not familiar with in the books and journals I had to read. The definitions are easy to understand and find.

A valuable resource for ecology students.......2004-07-28

My graduate advisor recommended this book and I wish I'd had it sooner. It has been extremely helpful with both my classwork and my thesis. When muttling through scientific literature, this has come in handy for understanding the esoteric vocabulary. It is laid out just like a Webster's dictionary, so terms are easy to find. There are also 28 Appendices with everything from maps of goegraphic regions and biomes to units conversions to abbrevaitons and proof correction marks. It is also good for finding the correct term to describe that concept your professor was discussing in class.

excellent reference piece.......2001-05-18

this is an excellent reference piece to any biologist. It has alot of the key words that any biologist who is in the fields of evolution, ecology, systematics, taxonomy to name a few. I myself am a graduate student and a couple of us have it and has become an invaluable piece to our librairies.

A very nice dictionary for students majoring biology.......2000-05-04

I bought the dictionary of first edtion twelve years ago. I found its explanation about ecology, evolution, and systematics is very easily reading and useful to students majoring biology. It let me understand many terms, and read the texts and references more easily. I'm very gald to know the new edition was published. I believe that the new edition will give readers more useful and modern words of ecology, evolution, and sytematics.

In the early twentieth century the relevance of chirality to the pharmaceutical industry was established by the fact that one enantiomer of hyoscyamine possessed greater pharmacological activity than the other. Today, most new drugs and those under development consist of a single optically active isomer, and chirality is also becoming an issue for the agrochemical and other industries. Regulatory agencies throughout the world are currently reviewing the importance of chirality with regard to pharmaceutical and agrochemical products. New guidelines from such agencies have been key drivers for the focus on single enantiomer products in these industries.

These scientific and regulatory developments have created the need for a guide for workers in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries seeking information on chiral molecules, processes, and commercially available chiral chemicals. Chiral Intermediates presents the chemical professional with a comprehensive listing of over 4700 available chiral chemicals including specific data of interest for each entry in the listing. Its companion volume, Chiral Drugs presents the same detailed information for over 2000 chiral drugs.

The 'Chiral Pool' of readily available, relatively inexpensive chiral compounds has been expanding at a rapid rate as more and more products are produced in large quantities at economical prices. New developments in various technologies for isolating, preparing, and purifying chiral materials have greatly increased the opportunities for utilizing optically pure compounds in commercial applications. Novel techniques for classical resolution, new methodologies for developing selective enzymes for biocatalysis, advances in the application of microorganisms for chemical production, and continued progress in the area of asymmetric synthesis have all contributed to the growth of this field.

Part I contains four chapters which provide an introduction to topics relevant to the field of chiral chemistry and includes a brief overview of chirality, a short discussion on the current market drivers in the area of chiral chemistry, and a basic presentation of the various sources and methods for obtaining chiral compounds.

Part II presents entries for 4700 commercially available chiral compounds. For each main entry, the chemical name and a list of trade names and synonyms is provided; the CAS Registry Number, the European Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances (EINECS) number, and the Merck Index (12th edition) number are given when available. The physical properties, including specific rotation, of each compound are described and indicated applications are presented. The structure of nearly every compound is provided, and the manufacturers and suppliers of the compounds are also given. Indexes, including a master index of names and synonyms and an index of custom manufacturing services for production of chiral compounds, are appended.
