Customer Reviews:
The best little histochemistry book in Texas (or anywhere).......2002-11-13
I own 10 manuals of histochemical and histological technique. I use this one 4 times as often as the other nine together. Kiernan describes most useful techniques well. His own neurological technique is unbeatable. He discusses dye chemistry thoroughly, and discusses staining mechanisms well. On top of all this, the book is an incredible bargain at [money] for the paperback.

Book Description
Molecular Histochemical Techniques presents detailed protocols for analyzing DNA strand breaks, specific RNA/DNA expressions, and DNA binding proteins such as transcription factors at the individual cell level. In situ nick translation and TUNEL are described in detail, along with radioactive and nonradioactive methods for in situ hybridization. Of special significance is the description of Southwestern histochemistry, a new development in molecular histochemistry, which makes it possible to analyze the expression of transcription regulatory factors in individual cells. This volume provides an overview of the current status of molecular histochemistry along with practical how-to-do-it details. Methodology is set forth step-by-step in easy-to-follow language by leading scientists who are working in the field today. The book serves as both a rich source of the latest information and a practical lab manual.
Book Description
Ask someone who works with horses how best to communicate with a balky colt and she will tell you that horses do not respond to human cajoling. To be successful the human must understand and work with, not against, the horse’s instincts, needs, and fears. When a trainer resorts to human teaching methods — reasoning, begging, bribing, even hugging and kissing — the horse will become confused and unable to respond appropriately. But if horses are treated respectfully with methods they understand, everyone involved — animal and human — will be happier, safer, and more productive.
Horse trainer and instructor Cherry Hill believes that every human/horse relationship benefits from a greater human understanding of what motivates horses, how they experience the world, what makes them happy, and what worries them. Journey through the equine mind with Hill as she explores all that makes a horse tick. How do his basic needs dictate his behavior and mood? What touches and tastes appeal to his senses? How does his “flight or fight” instinct dictate his response to sudden movements?
Hill offers interactive experiments — fun for both horse and human — that bear out her findings on horse behavior. And her final chapter presents simple training methods that draw from the insights and information presented throughout the book.

Winifred's View.......2007-09-28
I have purchased many books on horses and riding, but Cherry Hill's "..Think Like a Horse" explained and reinforced so much more about what I was questioning and experiencing with my horse. It is certainly a wonderful resourse for "newbies" like myself who have discovered the wonders of horse at a late age, but I believe it also holds a lot of insights for the more experienced riders/owners who care about knowing their horses at least as well as they ride/show them. I was looking for something to explain a particular change in my horse's behavior (after eye exams, blood work etc turned up negative) and I believe I found it in Ms. Hill's book. Winnie and I thank her for sharing her knowledge and wisdom in a book packed with information.
If I were a horse.......2007-09-20
If I were a horse, I would want this author to be my "keeper." This book is written with keen insight and clearly communicated to anyone who owns a horse, rides a horse or has dreamed of galloping across a great meadow as free as the wind. I highly recommend this book along with another book that embraces horses: It's called On the Trail of the Pony Express and the book follows Cherokee author, Jerry Ellis, for 2,000 miles along the Pony Express Trail by foot, horse, covered wagon and canoe from Missouri to California.
Wonderful book!.......2007-07-15
This is a delightful book full of information and insight from an often under-appreciated trainer. Cherry Hill covers everything from development to grooming to behavior to training.
Information which is normally strewn across several horse books comes together in this single volume. This is a must-read for every horse enthusiast.

'Reason not the need The basest beggars are in the poorest thing superfluous'.......2007-08-13
Given that thousands of volumes have been devoted to Shakespeare I believe it a bit presumptuous to believe one can define and present the 'essential' Shakespeare. Essential to whom? And 'essential' in what way?
Nonetheless this book has much information about Shakespeare, about the plays which it covers one by one, about the characters all of whom it lists, about the major 'genres' of Shakespeare's writing, about the way the plays have been played.
It does not however what I personally consider essential to the reading of Shakespeare, the criticism of Samuel Johnson, of Coleridge. of Bradley of C.S. Knight, and even Harold Bloom and Stephen Greenblatt. There is no effort at deep interpretative insight.
It again does provide information which will be especially valuable for many in regard to Shakespeare's lesser known works.
It can be read with enjoyment.
I would only suggest that with Shakespeare for whom abundance and richness in language and in character are so great that the 'essential' itself is not sufficient.
Essential for Shakespeare.......2007-05-22
These days it is hard to read Shakespeare without some sort of support reading, a companion to help make the reading clearer. This book does that as well as discuss Shakespeare's life and works in accurate, or as accurate as it can be, detail. I used this book to do a small research paper on Shakespeare. I had several other sources and this book had all of that information plus some. The matierial presented in "Essential Shakespeare Handbook" is often interesting facts that make reading it fun. This book is a good companion book to have with you while reading Shakespeare. I have read more thorough guides to Shakespeare, but this one ranks high on my list.
Nevermore Fear Shakespeare.......2007-03-03
Did you know that Shakespeare introduced about 1500 new words into the English language? According to this book, this was not only because Shakespeare was a genius. "When Shakespeare began writing plays and poems, the English language was absorbing new words more rapidly than ever before or since." This was due to a convergence of factors succintly described in this easy-to-read, beautifully-illustrated, and visually interesting book.
Do you just want to know what happens in The Tempest, or want to see who the characters are, or need an act-by-act breakdown, or do you want to know the ratio of prose to verse in the play? It's all here. Do you want to see some great pictures of past productions? Do you want to know the dates of the tragedies? Want to understand what Hamlet really meant by "to be or not to be"? Want to know what theater was like when Shakespeare wrote or what the period was like in which he lived? You got it here. The only thing you can't find here is an index to Shakespeare quotes. (See G. F. Lamb "Shakespeare Quotations" and Michael Macrone "Brush Up Your Shakespeare!" for two good ones.)
The most wonderful thing about this book is how easy (and fun) it is to learn from. You need fear Shakespeare no more!
Jennifer Van Bergen, author of "Archetypes for Writers: Using the Power of Your Subconscious"
Fantastic Shakespeare Resource.......2007-01-08
This is a fantastic Shakespeare Resource for the everyday person who is interested in knowing more. Spread out clearly with plenty of pictures and interesting facts - this book is a joy to flick through and offers easy to find information.
Really, really good.
Great overview.......2006-11-20
Some people are apparently fooled by the apparent shallowness of this book. Don't be.
There's a wealth of information in here: play synopses, character descriptions, play backgrounds, and historical notes. There's also line counts and analyses on each play on the usage of prose & verse. There are helpful icons used everything to indicate types of characters, plays, etc. and it's a more "visual" book than your tpical Shakespeare book. Some people call it "eye candy" and I call it "reader friendly".
There's not a lot of deep analysis in this book, but that's not what it's about...there are other books for that. This is a broad and intelligent overview of all the plays presented in a compact and attractive format.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Easy to follow.......2005-09-02
This book is really a nice reference. It addresses many things that are usually not said in a riding book in a manner that is easy to understand. I think it would be good for a beginner and for advanced riders that should brush up on some basics. I know we can all use a refresher from time to time.
His drawings are great.
Excellent Resource for all Riders.......2002-05-30
"The Handbook of Riding Essentials" is a wonderful resource for all riders of all disciplines. Written and diagramed in a clear and concise format, the author covers the correct use of the hands, seat and legs and then progresses to each individual movement. The diagrams are very clear and depict the use of the natural aids for each movement. All aspects of each movement are clearly covered and very helpful. For example, in the chapter entitled: "The Natural Aids for the Haunches-In" he expertly covers; Goals of the Exercise; Rider's Aids; Why Does the Rider Use the Natural Aids; How Does the Rider Initiate Haunches-In; How Does the Rider Teach Haunches-In; Mistakes to Avoid and Helpful suggestions. As a rider this book has helped me to better understand, teach my horse and execute each movement. This is a reference book for all levels of all riders and should be in every riders' library.

Book doesn't meet my needs.......2002-04-09
I'm having a hard time finding a book to supplement riding lessons, and this just wasn't it for me. I found the diagrams somewhat difficult to understand; if anything, they seem to make the actions they're trying to explain more complicated than they are.
Example: "Right hand: Active, rotates at the wrist, fingernails facing up; acts slightly to the left in front of the withers. Left hand: Passive, goes forward and down to yield, to allow, and then to regulate the action of the right hand" - it goes on like this to describe what the rider's right leg is supposed to do, and the left, and the seat, then gives the horse response broken down by nose, head, neck, shoulders, and haunches.
All this is to describe the "Indirect Rein of Opposition in Front of the Withers". There are no photos, just stick diagrams w/lots of arrows and dotted lines. I'd recommend looking at this book in a bookstore or library before purchasing it.
Great book for the begging English rider.......2001-12-30
This book is written so the beginner can understand it. Has beautiful illustrations on seat, leg, and hand positions. It also tells you what your horse should be doing after you apply the aids. Very helpful book.
Customer Reviews:
Handbook of Jumping Essentials.......2001-12-05
This book is an easy read to improve horse and rider over fences. It approaches the task of jumping, especially of finding the correct take-off spot in a very straight-forward manner through a series of exercises. The concentration is on the performance, not on the rider's position. Many simple (and humorous)drawings get the point across and each exercise includes a list of what will be learned, why it should be learned and what errors to watch for in the process. For advanced beginner to advanced riders. (Written prior to today's ASTM/SEI certified headgear, the photos show the use of old-fashioned hunt caps, not the current protective helmets.)

Broaden your knowledge of jet engine technology and its associated subjects. This is a technically comprehensive study of the components that constitute a gas turbine aero-engine and examines each part's design and function in practice. Concentrates on turbojet, turboprop and turbofan designs, and is applicable to civilian and military usage. Contains an overview of the main design types and fundamentals, and looks at air intakes, compressors, turbines and exhaust systems in great detail.
Customer Reviews:
Good Basic Textbook.......2007-04-04
The book provides a great foundation in jet propulsion principles and theory for aeronautical engineers. The book is well organized and well written with clear and easy to follow explanations.
This is a reader-friendly book that most people ranging from pilots to mechanical or aeronautical engineering students who require a down to earth book that teaches the fundamentals of jet engines will find interesting and informative.
Jet Engines: Fundamentals of Theory, Design and Operation.......2006-03-22
Very good book, everything you need for the begining.
Good but spotty.......2006-01-12
After reading historical stuff on Whittle, Hooker, Skunk Works, and various other "JET" sources, I was hoping this book would give me lots of good info.
It does - but it doesn't. Spotty information. Sometimes really excellent, other times irritatingly brief and you're turning the page to find... a new topic.
Overall yes, I'd say buy it - but don't expect it to be a "great" read. It really needs some reworking to help it.
Thorough, not too technical.......2005-08-08
This book was exactly what I was looking for. I am a third year mechanical engineering student interning with Honeywell. I have a good understanding of mechanical systems in general, but no prior experience with turbine engines. I just wanted a book that I could read in a week or so that would help me understand the basics (What is a stator? How do these things generate thrust? etc.) This book was very dry, but to the point, which I appreciated.
shipping.......2004-12-20
This review has nothing to do with the book itself, since I ordered it almost a month ago and have not received it yet. I am extremely agitated with amazon and with this free super saver shipping. If I had known that an item ordered on November 26th would not arrive until after Christmas, I would have spent the extra five dollars to ship the items. I have received more than 3 emails with delivery updates and estimated arrivals, and my items still have not been shipped. Now I'll have a gift sent to my house after Christmas for someone who will have left for Italy and won't even be able to receive it.

Cold Mountain, the recent film based on the Charles Frazier novel, is a love story set during the American Civil War. Behind the Seen, being the story of how accomplished film editor Walter Murch (of Apocalypse Now fame), is also a story of love in a time of internal conflict. The difference being that Behind the Seen has to do with how Murch used Final Cut Pro, a software package that runs on any modern Macintosh and costs less than $1000, to edit Cold Mountain and thereby incite debate among professional film editors. Can such a mass-market product, accessible to anyone with a camcorder and a FireWire cable, be a serious tool for professionals? Murch proved that it can.
Behind the Seen deals with the technical accomplishment of using Final Cut Pro to assemble a feature film, but more importantly explains to its readers how shooting and editing work--and how the personalities involved in Cold Mountain worked together. This is a book of nonfiction that you can read from beginning to end; it is a technical book but not in the click-and-drag sense. Rather, it's a story about a creative team and the tools they used to deliver a work of drama. --David Wall
Topics covered: How Cold Mountain was shot and edited, using Final Cut Pro as the principal editing suite.
Book Description
The first volume to reveal the post-production process of a major motion picture (Cold Mountain) edited entirely in Final Cut Pro!
- Offers a rare inside glimpse at the creative process of one of cinema's giants: threetime Academy Award-winning editor
Walter Murch.
- Includes anecdotes from the director, edit staff, and producers; photos, emails, and journal entries from Murch; and behind-the-scenes insights.
- Accounts from Apple's Final Cut Pro team about what they think about the future of it in feature films.
As the first software-only desktop nonlinear editing system, Final Cut Pro sat the film industry on its ear when it debuted back in 1999. Now it's shaking things up again as editor Walter Murch, director Anthony Minghella, and a long list of Hollywood heavy-hitters are proving that this under-$1,000 software can (and should) be used to edit a multi-million dollar motion picture! This book tells the story of that endeavor: the decision to use Final Cut Pro, the relationship between the technology and art (and craft) of movie-making, how Final Cut Pro was set up and configured for Cold Mountain, how the software's use affected the work flow, and its implications for the future of filmmaking. More than anything, however, this is Murch's own story of what seemed to many a crazy endeavor-- told through photos, journal entries, email musings, and anecdotes that give readers an inside view of what the film editor does and how this particular film progressed through post-production. The book includes, in his own words, Murch's vision, approach, and thoughts on storytelling as he shapes Cold Mountain under the intense pressures of completing a major studio film.
With Academy Awards for his work on Apocalypse Now and The English Patient, sound and film editor Walter Murch is one of the few universally acknowledged editing masters in cinema. Along with George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola, he is one of the founding members of the Northern California cinema community. Author
Charles Koppelman has been writing screenplays and directing video and film since the early 1980s, including the independent feature film, Dumbarton Bridge, award-winning documentaries, and commercials.
"An exploration inside the editorial engine-room of a major feature film - the first book of its kind ever and sure to remain the best. Charles Koppelman chronicles Walter Murch's astonishing high-wire trapeze act as he works his way through the first large-scale implementation of Apple's Final Cut Pro editing software. Must be read by anyone interested in film, computers, or how the creative process unfolds."-- Francis Ford Coppola, director of The Conversation, The Godfather,Apocalypse Now
"This is probably the subtlest and most tender account of what a craftsman brings to a motion picture ever written. It is fascinating in its detailand awesome in its gradual uncovering of the ear, the eye and the soul ofWalter Murch. The book may seem technical, or 'professional,' but anyreader will be thrilled by the description of a struggle and the necessarycommitment to it. To be read by anyone who has ever thought it might be funto make a movie."-- David Thomson, film critic and author of The Biographical Dictionary
"BEHIND THE SEEN is not only revelatory in terms of technicalinnovation, but it reads like a thrilling suspense novel. Superblywritten and paced, the book captures the brilliant and daringfilm/sound editor-scientist Walter Murch in all his passionate andcreative glory. Charles Koppelman has crafted a truly unique additionto the canon of film history, delivering a must-read for anyoneinterested in how movies are made."--Barry Gifford, author of Wild at Heart, Lost Highway and City of Ghosts
"... excellent, original and tremendously informative book...Koppelman's account reads like a thriller... Behind the Seen achievessomething remarkable: a chronicle about technology and data, machinesand methodologies which also manages to record a story of friendshipsand dreams-not least the dreams I have been lucky enough to sharewith my friend and editor over three films and for almost a decade."--from the book's foreword by Anthony Minghella, writer and director ofCold Mountain, The English Patient, and The Talented Mr. Ripley
Customer Reviews:
Apple Seeds Hollywood.......2007-01-06
This book offers a fascinating record of the interaction between art and technology, artist and corporation. It describes in thorough detail the logistsics of shooting and editing a feature film from start to finish using a totally untried and discouraged software and hardware tool chain formerly for amatuer efforts only.
The meeting of Silicon Valley and Hollywood industries creates a riveting plot that is hard to put down. The gorgeous graphic layout and attention to detail also help.
Only grumble was the detachment of one page from the binding, but if you don't sleep next to your copy, it probably won't be a concern.
Anyone interested in cutting edge (hah!) technology and/or legendary Bay area genius Walter Murch must read this book.
Not required reading.......2006-08-01
Get this is book if you want to read all about...
1. Walter Murch.
2. Cold Mountain.
3. What it was like to edit a feature film on consumer software that was not ready for prime time.
4. The practical problems facing an editor.
Do not get this book if you want to improve your editing technique. While Murch drops some nuggets of useful information here and here, I think that you have to go through too much irrelevant material to make it worthwhile. The lessons that Walter learned from FCP 3.0 are outdated, for the most part.
Disappointed. Not what I expected.......2006-04-05
I picked up this book expecting to get a blow-by-blow account of the editing of Cold Mountain and how Walter Murch translated his film cutting techiniques (that are well explained in either "In the Blink of an Eye" or "The Conversations...") into Final Cut Pro.
Instead the bulk of the book was spent in excruciating detail about the selection of Final Cut Pro as an editing platform. There was much talk of the concerns around using FCP3 to edit a feature-length film project. Likewise there was too much detail about the worries they had about shipping these systems to Romania for the edit. Would they have tech support?!? Would they have enough hard drive space?!? Would it survive customs?!?
There are even copies of e-mails of the order of the system and how grand a moment it was... Sorry, I found the inclusion of this material to be boring. I lost interest well before the edit actually started.
To me it was more a story of how Digital Film Tree (God Bless 'em. They ARE good people.) took a big chance on championing this effort and how they supported Murch and his Assistant Editor to provide the technical knowledge of FCP than it was about the actual Edit of Cold Mountain.
The information IS dated now that FCP is in version 5.1 (as of 4/2006) and that may have tainted my read of the book.
How Walter Murch Edited Cold Mountain Using Apple's Final Cut Pro and What This Means for Cinema, First Edition.......2006-03-24
Interesting, well written and easy to get your head around.
A Must Have Book!.......2005-08-10
I have been using Final Cut Pro since version one, and when I heard about Walter Murch using it to edit Cold Mountain, I was so excited. The book is well written and it gives you first hand knowledge of the pain and excitement of editing.
I'm not a big book reader, but I couldn't put this book down.
Walter Murch is a true pioneer.
A must have for your book collection!
