Sports Stories That Take You to the Heart of Godâs Story
No wonder the Bible uses sports to illustrate its principlesâthe sports world is filled with stunning, powerful metaphors for Biblical truths! The Sports Devotional Bible will open your eyes to the spiritual lessons contained in the sports you love. From the stamina and speed of Olympic racing, to the raw combat of pro football, to the beauty and grace of figure skating, this Bible brings Godâs Word to life with dramatic insights from the lives of professional athletes, coaches, and announcers.
Drawing from Sports Spectrum magazineâs vast storehouse of information on Christian athletes, editor Dave Branon presents a devotional best-of-the-best from the exploits and testimonies of popular sports figures. The Sports Devotional Bible includes:
A yearâs-worth of daily insights and weekend readings designed to drive home the lessons of Scripture with inspiring stories from all corners of the world of sports
Special feature articles showing how virtues such as character, trust, perspective, discipline, and faith make both great athletes and strong Christians
âTime Outâ articles that illustrate Biblical principles or explain verses
âPower Versesâ listing athletesâ favorite verses
âPower Verse Plusâ featuring thoughts from famous athletes on passages of Scripture
Full-color inserts with photos and biographies of sports stars
Book introductions, topical index, and reading plans . . . and more!
The riveting stories of hundreds of great Christian athletes and sports figures unlock the Bibleâs teachings on faith in God and life on earth.
Itâs easy to see how athletes can get down and depressed. They live with failure every day. Take for example the troubles that plagued professional golfer Jackie Gallagher-Smith in 1997. She had worked hard in 1996 to get her Tour card, which would have enabled her to compete on the LPGA Tour in 1997. She finished 13th in qualifying school, which was good enough to put her on the Tour in 1997.
So what happened to her when the 1997 season opened? While playing the first hole of the first event of the season, she tried to extricate her ball from a bunker. Her club head slammed into the lip of the bunker, and she injured her hand.
As a Christian, she had a choice. She could get angry at God, blame him for her troubles and sink into despair. Or she could continue to lean on himâwhich is what she did. Later, she told a Sports Spectrum magazine writer about that decision, saying, âGod builds your character through troubled times, and he wants you to draw closer to him when you have difficulties. People tend to push God away because they think he doesnât care, but those are the times God really wants you to cling to him.â
With Jackieâs story in mind, letâs look back at the difficulties the psalmist faced in Psalm 88:
âMy soul is full of trouble.â (verse 3)
âMy life draws near the grave.â (verse 3)
âI am like a [person] without strength.â (verse 4)
âYou have taken from me my closest friends.â (verse 8)
It seems that, like Jackie, the psalmist faced what seemed to be unfair circumstances. And although there is a continuing sadness in the psalmistâs story of affliction, there is an important similarity to Jackieâs story. Both continued to lean on God and depend on him. Jackie talked about clinging to God, and the psalmist, by his writing, shows that he was continuing to pray to God. He knew that cutting off communication with God while in a crisis was disastrous, and he continued to hold on to the only one who could see him through.âFrom the âWeekend: Extra Pointsâ for Psalm 88

Perfect for any sports fan........2007-07-29
My ten year old spotted this Bible at a recent trip to our local Christian book store and couldn't quit talking about it. He couldn't wait till it came in the mail and was so happy with it. My son is an avid sports fan and he knows the athletes well. He has really enjoyed reading all the testimonies. Because our son goes to a Christian school he is pretty knowlegeable about the Bible and has memorized a lot of scriptures.(For his age.) I am so excited because I know that this will only encourage him more to read the Bible and get into the Word. I feel like anything that makes learning more fun is definetly the way to go. I can't recommend this Bible enough and I think my son will enjoy his for several years.
Great item.......2007-04-11
My son really enjoys reading the testimonies of the athletes. It's been a great inspiration for him.
Wonderful.......2007-01-05
This was a Christmas gift for my son who is an avid sportsman. This will be a great companion to the Bible he already has, and a great help for the high school students he mentors.
Excellent Devotional for Sports Fans.......2006-11-06
This Bible is an excellent devotional for sports fans! It covers, I think, every sport there is, highlighting certain athletes, teams, or memorable sports events and tying them into the message of the Bible. My personal favorite (being a Cubs fan) is the parallel it draws between Psalm 106 and Chicago Cubs fans -- with the common feature being "longsuffering!" Definitely a must-buy for the Christian sports fan.
A great Bible for all sports fans.......2006-06-25
The Sports Devotional Bible makes the Bible relevant for me with bibical principles illustrated through sports analogies and lessons. The devotionals are short and concise and take about 5 minutes a day. It is a well-conceived spiritual game plan for spiritual development that will help you to build your faith.

And God Said, "It's Good!" takes the sport of football and compares this favorite Sunday pastime to the Bible--and it works. Once again, Gary Graf combines his love of sports with the Bible, resulting in an amusing and fun-loving book that delights any sports fan.
Comparisons include Hail Mary passes and answered prayers; immaculate receptions and Immaculate Conceptions; football stadiums and cathedrals; biblical verses and double reverses, plus good books and playbooks. These and many more parallels fill this lively and entertaining 192-page hardcover.
On any Sunday, you can bet some are brought closer to the spirit of the sport while others are more connected to the bible. The twenty chapters in this book compare football and the bible--with remarkable results!
"Forgiveness and good works were just pre-game drills for the Lord's true purpose here on earth."
"God rested on Sunday. Football is mostly played on Sunday. Coincidence? I think not."
Any author who can find similarities between the dazzling colors of a football team and the colorful vestments of a priest--needs to have his book read cover to cover. A delightful read for everyone--even if you're not remotely interested in football.

Graf's Work is a Masterful Piece of Teaching.......2007-08-27
I played football from elementary school all the way into college. While I didn't know much about the Bible when I was young, I did become a student and avid reader of scripture later in life. And as God's plan for me has unfolded, I now teach people interested in joining our Church how to use, understand and appreciate the Bible.
So, when a close friend told me about Mr. Graf's book, I was intrigued about how he might combine my all-time favorite sport with the Bible. Well, just let me say that Graf has done a masterful job. In his second book (the first was on baseball and scripture), he becomes teacher, theologian, historian and story teller. He has woven and combined treasured and important parts of the Bible with some of the greatest plays, players and stories from football history. Importantly, he does in a very enjoyable, entertaining and thought provoking read.
Graf captures my interest and attention right from the beginning. He quite adroitly shows how Lambeau Field in Green Bay Wisconsin was indeed an "awesome place," just as the Bible says the home of God's chosen people was also such a place as is noted in Genesis 28:17. Honestly, when I was a quarterback in the third grade little leagues, there was no more awesome place on earth than the place (Lambeau Field) where the Green Bay Packers played.
Moreover, I believe Graf's gift with this book has been to create a marvelous teaching tool that will help with religious education for generations to come. As an example, in one of the early chapters he tells us in his words after quoting Proverbs 3:5-6, 23 that "there are two components to trusting God. One is to prayerfully discern his will for us in how we live our daily lives. . ."
Graf cleverly connects religious subject matter in a manner that is unusual and at the same time unexpected. He explains in one paragraph how God wants us to trust our instincts. Then as I am beginning to digest the power of his scriptural analysis, he turns the tables and suddenly introduces former the Detroit Lions great running back Barry Sanders into the story.
Graf seems to be a master at uncovering factoids and details about America's most famous sport, reporting that the first pro football draft was held in 1920 and that the first official transaction between teams when tackle Bob Nash was sold from the Akron Pros to the Buffalo All-Americans for $300. You won't be surprised, and nor was I, to read in several following paragraphs that Jesus also drafted his team of apostles.
The true spirit and soul of Graf's work is revealed as he is both teacher and commentator, when he says, "In football, a fumble can lose a game. In faith, a stumble can lose a soul. Through the game, we are taught to learn from our mistakes, to pick ourselves up off the turf, remove the clumps of grass from our facemasks, and play on. Through the gospels we learn that though we may stumble time and again, all we need to do is seek forgiveness."
One might think Graf is attempting to use this literary platform to force his views of religious topics and espouse his positions on important theological issues. But I don't think that is the case. Instead, Graf demonstrates that he is indeed a true fan of football, obviously the competent researcher and most important, he is a true student of scripture.
He proves with this book that he loves life, loves God, and loves his sports. And what can be more commendable than that.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.
Customer Reviews:
Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Fantastic!.......2004-07-09
I tutor English to ESL students and combine this workbook with the Word By Word Picture Dictionary. This workbook is perfect to those between beginners and intermediate levels of English proficiency. The workbook has helpful exercises and helps the student apply the vocabulary learned in the dictionary. I especially like how the student is forced to visually associate words with meanings rather than jump to their native language for a definition. I highly recommend this book!

Excellent Resource for ESL Teachers!.......2007-05-24
I was lucky enough to be in a situation where my adult ESL classroom had enough in-classroom copies for all students to use during classtime. I used this almost everyday. It's a fantastic way to teach new vocabulary, especially when you combine its use with other teaching tools, such as acting out motions. I often had my students use the books to quiz each other. This is a good resource, and if you can get enough copies for everyone in your class to share, DO IT!
Very helpful.......2006-08-19
I host foreign exchange students and the first few weeks this helps them out till they get just a better grasp of the English language. Most come with a very good understanding, but if they need to go to the doctor's or something this picture dictionary is just the thing to help out. It is useful around the house also.
Very Highly Recommended.......2004-01-27
One of my specialties is vocabulary, so I'm always looking good visual dictionaries. I've bought half I've found, and most of the rest are on my shopping list. This is a very close second to the Oxford Picture Dictionary as my favorite. It's not as comprehensive and the illustrations are not as good, but the topical arrangement is better and it's easier on your budget. The authors have written several other excellent ESL books. Two of their vocabular books include a basic version of this one and Day By Day: English For Employment Communication. Their Foundations is a conversation book but is also a good vocabulary builder.
Ultimate ESL Resource - - I Love It, My Students Love It ! !.......2000-11-06
By the authors of SIDE BY SIDE this is a much more colorful and better organized picture dictionary than the formerly more popular OXFORD PICTURE DICTIONARY. Whenever I bring it to class, if the students don't have it, the first thing atleast 70% will ask me is "Where can I get it ?" - - used with the accompanying flash cards (not included) you can teach entire (and substantive) lessons with just those two things alone... and even without it, you can use it to expand amply from whatever text book you're using. The chapters on the household, occupations, places around town, work activities are especially useful. In my begining classes we learn how to ask each other questions about these subjects, and begin all our classes discussing what we did over the weekend, what we did at work etc. etc. We talk about our house, our family... and all these topics are with Level 1 students, eye to eye (pair work, group work, class discussion)and facilitated by lessons from this book. - - Pictures get students talking and open them up and this is the ultimate resource ! ! !
As a tip, the students love looking at the pictures and discussing them, so to keep activities interactive, have students share books... or make worksheets where the students have to exchange information ! ! !
Great reference book!.......1999-09-02
Illustrations are somewhat dated and the colors on some pages need to be sharper but the book is quite thorough and a great pictionary overall.
Book Description
Carefully researched over ten years and eagerly anticipated by the agile community, Crystal Clear: A Human-Powered Methodology for Small Teams is a lucid and practical introduction to running a successful agile project in your organization. Each chapter illuminates a different important aspect of orchestrating agile projects.
Highlights include
Attention to the essential human and communication aspects of successful projects
Case studies, examples, principles, strategies, techniques, and guiding properties
Samples of work products from real-world projects instead of blank templates and toy problems
Top strategies used by software teams that excel in delivering quality code in a timely fashion
Detailed introduction to emerging best-practice techniques, such as Blitz Planning, Project 360º, and the essential Reflection Workshop
Question-and-answer with the author about how he arrived at these recommendations, including where they fit with CMMI, ISO, RUP, XP, and other methodologies
A detailed case study, including an ISO auditor's analysis of the project
Perhaps the most important contribution this book offers is the Seven Properties of Successful Projects. The author has studied successful agile projects and identified common traits they share. These properties lead your project to success; conversely, their absence endangers your project.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Writing.......2007-01-06
Cockburn's writing style is fluid, the agile development topic is interesting, and his experience is very valuable.
Just starting out with "agile"? Try Crystal before XP........2006-03-10
The Crystal methodology is extremely lightweight, and is not saddled with the percieved "rules" of XP. This is *the* guidebook for the Crystal familiy. Pick a few of the 7 properties and get started building better software!
Informative.......2006-02-02
Lots of relevent information about Software Development project management. It give insight into ways of dealing with stuff I see every day at work. I am about 1/3 of they way through, it is well laid out, I'd recommend it for anyone that is a technology development group and want some good ideas for how to deal with projects.
A realistic agile methodology..........2006-01-03
While I like the general concepts behind agile development methodologies, sometimes they seem to be focused on speed with a disregard for any documentation. Alistair Cockburn has an agile methodology that appears more palatable in today's environments... Crystal Clear : A Human-Powered Methodology for Small Teams.
Contents: Explained (View from the Outside); Applied (The Seven Properties); In Practice (Strategies and Techniques); Explored (The Process); Examined (The Work Products); Misunderstood (Common Mistakes); Questioned (Frequently Asked); Tested (A Case Study); Distilled (The Short Version); References; Index
The tendency to want to compare Crystal Clear (CC) to XP is something that can't be ignored. In fact, Cockburn addresses this in the Questioned section. He sums it up by saying that XP is stricter in several ways and more loose in a few. XP wants shorter iterations, CC can be longer. XP calls for pair programming, CC permits it. XP requires a customer to be an active member of the team, CC wants easy access to one. XP requires no documentation, CC does. It's probably that last point that makes CC an easier sell in a business environment. Some methodologies are documentation-heavy (like RUP) and some are documentation-absent (like XP). CC strikes a balance between documenting what needs to be known and remembered by the group, without having multiple binders of paper as a "product" to explain every last iota of code. While XP is the methodology that has all the mindshare these days, I think I feel more comfortable as a developer using something like CC.
If you're looking to slim down your development methodology or add some structure to a seemingly ad-hoc XP methodology, this book might be what you're looking for...
The best book about agile software development in practice.......2005-10-06
Cockburn is one of the best writers in the software development arena. I read its books like I'm reading a good SciFi novel :-) !
His other books are more focused on the theory behind the needs of agile and iterative development.
But now this book focus on the practical aspects of an agile methodology which I found is the best one until now. I read the FDD, Scrum, DSDM, XP, ASD and other agile books and I found this one most full of practical advice to teams which really want to deliver software products on time and with good quality!!!
Thank you Mr. Cockburn for your amazing book!!!
