Ten stars, if possible!! No more words needed, this a superb encyclopedia for all ages. Excellent pictures, diagrams, charts and fascinating information. If I could only own one encyclopedia on reptiles and amphibians, this would be it. Also highly recommended is Firefly "Insects and Spiders" Both are definitely worth the price.

Wonderful Compilation.......2005-10-19

The Firefly Encyclopedia series are uniformly excellent. There are several current volumes (Reptiles & Amphibians, Insects & Spiders, and Birds). With luck additional volumes will be added (I'd be especially keen to see one on fishes). The series picks up the tradition started with the David Macdonald's "Encyclopedia of Mammals" by having numerous experts contribute information about the organisms they study. Thus, each species or group of organisms is described by the scientists who know them best. The result is a truly amazing compilation of information about each type of organism.

The Reptiles and Amphibians volume contains information from 38 separate contributors about all types of reptiles and amphibians. Contents include:

Amphibians, general information: 28 pages
Caecilians: 4 pages
Salamanders and Newts: 22 pages
Frogs and Toads: 34 pages
Reptiles, general information: 20 pages
Turtles and Tortoises: 10 pages
Lizards: 38 pages
Worm-lizards: 2 pages

The book is lavishly illustrated. There are tons of amazing photographs and lots of beautifully rendered drawings. The text is well written and generally easy to follow. Some sections are fairly technical (I have a Ph.D. in Biology and got lost a few times), but probably 90% or more should be accessible to anyone. I strongly recommend this book for biologists, naturalists, and people interested in wildlife. It would make an excellent gift for a young person (probably junior high +) who likes animals.

A herpetological classic.......2005-09-11

Tim Halliday and Kraig Adler deserve much praise for the blend of informative writing and hard science in their Encyclopedia of Reptiles and Amphibians which has been in print since the late 1980s.

The illustrations, drawn in many cases from photos, and the photographs which are liberally distributed through the text serve to assist the readers' understanding rather than just being pretty pictures plopped in to fill space.

Both Halliday and Adler are serious scientists and their rigorous devotion to fact shows on every page of this encyclopedia.

I recommend it for everyone interested in reptiles and amphibians. In fact, I recommend all three editions as each is slightly different and shows the progression of their efforts over time. The latest edition, from Firefly Press, has the most color photography and the most up-to-date information.

Excellent source... More than a set of charts!.......1999-07-14

Very usable in it's small page spiral format. Flipping pages as one cruises north or south is easy, and takes very little space at the helm. The annotations indicating marina locations save looking in separate guides when a stopping point is desired. Some obvious side trips (e.g. Banana River) are omitted and would have helped increase usefulness if included.

Excellent up-to-date reference.......1999-04-11

The charts are well organized and very reliable. Only a minimum number of aids were missing or changed in number. Some of the bridge info is a little dated but generally did not cause any navigational problems.

This book example: ABC marina turn right at bouy "1".
End of story, no info on marina size, what to do, facilities etc.
No idea what anything is like or what the location of the marinas, etc.
Another example: Anchorage to right 0.3 mile off ICW channel.
That is all in info provided.

ICW - Just The Facts, Ma'am.......2005-08-03

Brief factual info is here, but presented in a dry, impersonal manner with no interesting first-person commentary or helpful sidebars. Marinas are not described well, or rated, with any commentary on shore-side attractions. A disappointing product from a husband-wife team; we were hoping for a bit of entertainment as well as education.

This book is extremely useless.......2003-11-06

We bought this book in summer 2002 for our trip down the ICW that fall. We bought it based on the fact it was a "Fourth Edition" ! It is SO out of date it is not funny, and in fact could be dangerous to rely on it, or at least an inconvenience. It might be somewhat useful if they updated it. After using Skipper Bob's Anchorages book, and his Marina guide, (which combined, cost less than the Moeller book) I would say these are the bible of ICW travel. They provide mile by mile anchorage info and rankings, and marina info such as types of fuel, price, slip prices, etc. VERY USEFUL and up to date info. They are updated every year, with changes to anchoranges/marina info submitted by the author, as well as the readers.

The Indispensable ICW Reference.......2002-10-05

When Margaret and I took our trip from Cleveland, Ohio to the Florida Keys and back we took and used a large collection of charts and guides, including this book. Of all the resources we had available on board, this book was the one we used constantly. It is arranged mile-by-mile as you proceed down or up the Waterway and tells you what to expect as you go. It is an excellent planning tool. We wouldn't do the Waterway without it!...

This book is excellent. Anyone remotely interested in bodybuilding, or weight training should definitely have this book. It is frequently referred to as the weight lifter's "Bible". I now know why.

I am learning about personal training and needed a book to learn more strength training exercises usings weights... this did the job. It's a great book with pictures and details how the exercise is done for each body part.

Excellent for excercises.......2007-03-25

This book has TONS of exercises! If you are looking for THE encyclopedia of bodybuilding exercises, this IS it. I have tried Arnold's guide, but found this one much better for exercise form and variety. It even talks about potential for injury in some exercises. The illustrations are very good and somewhat easy to follow. The book is organized in sections by body part and the exercises are rated by difficulty.
There is a very informative section on eating and health, too. This book was obviously created for weight trainign, focusing on the bodybuilder. There is a section on posing, and history on a couple great bodybuilders.
Pearl doesn't try to go overboard on the motivational stuff, either. Short, sweet, and to the point.
This is a very good manual and reference for anyone who wants to build their own program or is very interested in bodybuilding/sculpting. Using the thousands of exercises in this book, you will be able to work all angles of all muscles.
The only reason I gave it 4 instead of five stars, is that the book does not give much startup information for beginning bodybuilders as far as how much weight to start out with, stretching, and lack of illustrations of some basic exercises that new wieghtlifters may not be familiar with. Getting Stronger (also by Bill Pearl)is actually the book I used when I started lifting 12 years ago and it covered those basics. For the experienced, however, Keys to the Inner Universe is an outstanding manual! Between the two, you will not need a third book on weight training.

This is what has been missing........2005-02-15

This is the book I had always dreamed they would use in my queer classes at school!!! Activism, cultural analysis and personal narratives help push what has been understood as "gay and lesbian studies" from the now "safe" grounds of identity to the terrain of revolution. From racism in queer organizing to hilarious direct action That's Revolting is a radical a re-thinking of all that we through we knew about social change, gender, class and race.

Magnificent.......2005-01-29

Nowhere have I seen such an amazing range of essays about the complexities of queer lives. The book is fiery, exciting, and full of wisdom. I especially liked "Gay Art Guerrillas," where Sarah Schulman and Jim Hubbard detail the rise and fall of downtown New York in the eighties with lively anecdotes and cutting wit. "Calling All Restroom Revolutionaries" offers a step-by-step plan for making public bathrooms gender neutral and accessible, and offers a stunning critique of identity politics in the process. And the opening essay, "Dr. Laura, Sit on My Face," I've read over and over again, even once to a friend over the telephone. I live outside of the major gay destination cities, so this book was a welcome breath of fresh air -- Queer Eye for the Straight GIRL isn't exactly speaking to me, if you know what I mean. I recommend this book to anyone with a brain.
