Book Description

In her New York Times bestseller Animals as Teachers and Healers, Susan Chernak McElroy movingly explored the wide and enriching horizons of human relationships with animals. In this new volume of reflections and true animal stories, she invites us to broaden and deepen that relationship.

While living with her husband and animals on a farm in Oregon, McElroy pondered the ancient bonds that connect humans and animals: the healing gifts of animals, the genius of people who talk to them, and the power of animal messengers. She also asked herself the tough questions that engage every true animal lover. How can we soothe our anguish and guilt when a loved animal suffers or dies? How do we atone for our mistakes? When are animals prisoners and when are they fulfilled? Is it moral to eat other beings? And how can we go about transforming our relationship with animals?

Through daily experiences with the animals around her and those in her dreams--along with compelling true stories sent to her by readers--McElroy began to find answers. She discovered that animals are guides in the development of our souls. A frail llama teaches lessons of joy and unconditional love; a barn cat proves that service need not be imprisonment but fulfillment; a mortally injured hawk infuses a cancer patient with renewed strength and faith; an attentive rabbit awakens an abused child from a trance of sadness; and a skinny white horse does more for a damaged six-year-old boy in one hour than any human has done in six years.

In this deeply personal yet universal testament to the profound connection between animals and humans, there is wisdom and blessing. As the author reminds us, the fingerprint of God is often a pawprint.

5 out of 5 stars Another Must Read Book.......2007-02-16

Does anyone truly understand the relationship between animals and humans? For a more insightful view and understanding, this book is required reading!!!

5 out of 5 stars emotionally great!.......2005-08-02

This book is very emotional and is well worth it to buy. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Gift for an Animal Lover!.......2005-01-12

After reading her first book, Animals as Teachers and Healers, I was surprised yet happy to find that Susan Chernak McElroy's next book was just as spiritually enlightening, entertaining, and thought provoking. Animals as Guides for the Soul belongs in every animal lover's library. (I received this book as a gift and stongly recommend it for those seeking the perfect present for an animal lover friend or relative.)

Susan Chernak McElroy is a beautiful writer who weaves her own stories about animals with those of other people. I could say that I enjoyed this book for the stories alone -- but McElroy goes beyond storytelling and fearlessly writes about highly sensitive issues related to animals and their humans such as vegetarianism, euthanasia, animal abuse, and death and bereavement. This is more than a "feel good" book. McElroy hides nothing, even her own philosophical questions over animal issues or her very personal emotional struggles concerning the animals she has known in her lifetime.

This book was a true joy to read. I have become a committed Susan Chernak McEloy reader and have already begun reading her book on wild animals, Heart in the Wild.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2005-01-09

Just a great read ! Its a nice bedside book to put your mind in a good place before falling asleep.

4 out of 5 stars Moving.......2003-03-22

This is a very moving book, buy it, and don't judge the author for eating meat. Some of the purest, most beautiful and loving souls I've ever met (my animals) eat meat. We vegetarians aren't superior beings, and we have no right to judge others.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, handy useful resource!.......2006-03-07

My husband & I just returned from a fantastic trip to Big Bend National Park. We used this excellent, handy, easy-to-use book as our primary resource for deciding what hikes we were capable of taking in the park. The book proved very useful in showing numerous shorter, easier hikes that older people like us with foot and back problems could take as well as longer, harder trails for those who want them and are able. It also gave very interesting, accurate, readable, and useful descriptions of such matters as how to drive to the trailhead and whether parking is available there, some things (mainly scenery & geological features) one is likely to see on the trail, trail length, elevation gain, trail traffic etc., to allow use to decide which trails would most interest us. Further, it contains some useful black and white photos. And it provides some information about neighboring Big Bend Ranch State Park which we also at least drove through. Thanks in large part to this book, we were able to enjoy some the best hiking of our lives despite our current physical limitations. I only wish we had visited the park a decade ago or more when we could have done some of the more strenuous trails described as well. I would recommend this book for virtually anyone planning a visit to Big Bend.

      Book Description

The scenic wonders of the undeveloped Chihuahuan Desert beckon hikers with seemingly endless miles of trails in Big Bend National Park. The park is the largest tract of public land in Texas, with more than 1,200 square miles sprawled across West Texas along the Rio Grande. Hiking trails wander through deep canyons to spring-fed oases and to the tops of the forested Chisos Mountains. Written with assistance from Big Bend National Park staff, Hiking Big Bend National Park is the only comprehensive hiking guide to the many trials in this unique national park and will guide you to little-known places as well as the popular areas. Three trails in nearby Big Bend Ranch State Park also are featured. This guide includes safety descriptions, elevation charts, black-and-white photos, and up-to-date maps and reference information. Hiking Big Bend National Park is an invaluable resource for planning your next hiking trip in Texas's Big Bend Country.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Bend is Big .......2004-12-26

Big Bend National Park boasts one of the finest hikes in the world: the 12.6 mile loop from the Basin to the South Rim and back again. At the South Rim, elevation 7,300, the views of the Chihuahua desert go on forever with hardly a sign that the species Homo Sapiens exists. At this elevation in the Chisos mountains the vegetation is more reminiscent of the Rocky Mountains than of the desert. There is a thrill too in the signs forbidding children from hiking because of the danger from mountain lions.

This book describes 44 hikes from .2 to 19 miles long in Big Bend National Park and three in neighboring Big Bend Ranch State Park. The two parks are remote and immense, totalling together more than 1,500 square miles. The description of each hike includes a map, directions about how to get to the trail head, elevations, difficulty, and hiking traffic, which is light to non existent for most trails. This is lonely country away from a very few public facilities. Water is not available on most hikes in this desert area.

This is a well-written and illustrated trail guide book which is well worth your investment if you plan to visit and hike Big Bend.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to a Texas hiker/backpacker's library.......2001-12-02

Laurence Parent is a talented and prolific Texas nature photographer whose hiking and camping guides are a staple both on my bookshelf and in my backpack.

In Hiking Big Bend, Parent's keen eye is turned towards one of Texas' largest and most rugged parks, ensuring even the smallest of details, if worthy of note, is shared with readers. A borrowed copy of Hiking Big Bend came with me on a week-long camping trip to the park in October 2001, and upon my return home I purchased my own copy. Though lacking photos, the text serves dual roles as a trail by trail hiking guide and written "memory book", chock full of details about the parks history, geology, wildlife and natural phenomena.

Couple this text with the National Park Service's three-booklet guide to the park's hiking trails, paved roadways and unpaved/offroad trails and you will be set to plan and enjoy your travels in Big Bend National Park.

This year I've become fast friends with a woman from Venezuala. She has this book and that is how I know how great it is. Since she has only been in this country almost one year, it has been invaluable to her, and me as well.

We have used this book numerous times to translate the entire gamut of topics, words, items and meanings. And we've had a hilarious time as well. Such as when she needed to understand the difference between; 'snicker,' and 'sneaker,' 'boxes' and 'bucks,' (which she initially thought sounded the same!) Of course the killer of them all was when she ordered a 'coc,' not and not a 'Coke,' in our local Applebee's!

Now I'll be able to have my own copy for when we are on the telephone, and to help be better understand what she and her relations are talking about when they are speaking Spanish!

I truly hope that I'll continue to pick up the Spanish language as quickly as she has done, with the help of this book. Thank you, Pat

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Incredible History.......2007-09-21

This is one of the best books I have ever read on Byzantine history. Most writers on Byzantine history are academics with a somewhat dry style. Jonathan Phillips writes in a way that makes the events of 800 years ago extremely accessible. He is the first writer to really convey to me what Constantinople was like prior to the Crusader sacking, and the enormity of the destruction that occured. And given that anyone who reads this already knows of the events, Mr. Phillips did give them some dramatic tension. The story of what happened confirms to me that there is much in Byzantine history that should provide lessons for today.

5 out of 5 stars Good Popular History of the Sack of Constantinople.......2007-09-02

This book is an extremely well-written narrative that describes the sequence of events that initiated the fourth crusade and eventually lead up to the sacking of Constantinople. Some readers have pointed out that the author's position - that the attack on Constantinople was more a bumbling movement of a disorderly gang rather than a planned military expedition - is a thesis from a much earlier book, the 1978 Queller and Madden text, The Fourth Crusade: The Conquest of Constantinople. That may very well be true. Nevertheless, there can be little doubt that Phillip's work here is compellingly written, with an exceptionally strong narrative and an engaging style that brings the subject to life for the average reader, and will reintroduce the subject to a new generation of readers who wish to learn about this period of history.

Phillip's book is immensely interesting to read, and the non-historian can easily follow and become engaged in the story. But the book also evokes sickeningly negative emotions as we watch the story unfold. As we read of Constantinople's sack, we can hardly bear the thought of the loss sustained by the city and its people. And it's not limited to the injury and death sustained by those who were there. It's the loss of untold centuries of art and craftsmanship destroyed and forever lost to history for want of a few melted pellets of gold and silver. If there is anything like "group hysteria," perhaps this is a best-case study in it, because to see so many pillage, plunder, and destroy what will never be replaced (the immense art collection in the city that spanned at least 500 years) is surely some form of sickness. We feel the revulsion rise up in us as we read Phillip's retelling of the story, and wonder what the true extent of the loss is.

There are a number of books out these days on the crusades, and perhaps it is a worthwhile undertaking for us to be reminded of what went on in this period of history. Selecting any one of them might be a bit more difficult. If you are looking for a popular history written to a general audience but that doesn't skimp on facts or "dumb down" the narrative, Phillip's book is a very good choice. It would help if the reader knew a little about the crusades before starting this book, but it really isn't fully necessary to enjoy the volume. Read it to learn about the fourth crusade, but be ready for some of the awful lessons the story has to teach us.

3 out of 5 stars For Readers interested in the Crusades & Medieval Times.......2006-09-17

At first it wasn't what I had hoped for. I would have preferred more/better graphics. If you're somewhat knowledgeable about the Crusades you might like it but it's not for a first time read. Check around.

5 out of 5 stars Good pace, excellent clarity.......2006-09-06

Religion, politics, murder, betrayal, intrigue, and war... in the early 13th century! Phillips keeps what was a rather complicated and messy affair well-organized with his writing, and follows the Crusaders on what was supposed to be a trip from all points in Europe to Jerusalem. It wound up in Constantinople, where Catholic Christians, who were supposed to be fighting the Muslims in the Holy Land were detoured by political expediency to attack fellow Catholics at Zara and fellow Christians in Constantinople. This book has something of a hidden message in that it shows how religious fanaticism mixed with politics can have disastrous results. It reads equally well as a history or a bit of an allegory to any other sort of political-religious axis in recent history.

4 out of 5 stars Friendly fire.... Crusade style!.......2006-01-24

The Crusades between the Christians and Muslims wrecked havoc on the populations of the Middle East; this fact is undoubted. But what is often missed, but is just as important, is the effect it had on the various European and Muslim countries at that time which contributed to it either in providing men or supplies, or whose lands lay along the path of armies. This book fills in some of this neglected history by examining the history of the 4th Crusade.

Starting again in France, and then progressing thru Venice to pick up ships, the Christian army stopped at Constantinople to resupply and pick up more men. Unfortunately, various circumstances came together to keep the Crusaders here longer than they, or the locals wanted. Hostilities soon broke out. The leaders of the Crusades, to pay of their various debts, attacked and raided Constantinople instead. The locals were massacred, and the event made permanent the split between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Church that remains to the 21st century.

The book itself delves into the people involved in this event, both Crusaders, and the Constantines. The book examines their relationships to each other, their social standings and aspirations, their failures, and they came to play a part in this tragedy. The book goes into great detail to show how greed, arrogance, and plain stupidity both within and without the walls of Constantinople lead to its sacking. Overall, the book is a great read with drama and adventure, and recreates the life that was the Middle Ages.
