Book Description

As anyone who has been captivated by the sounds of an evening outdoors knows, the nightly music of the woods can be a lovely but bewildering mix of hoots, croaks, howls, and grunts. This handy collection of field recordings and species descriptions helps you to identify the various members of the nocturnal chorus, from crickets and owls to otters, porcupines, and alligators. Illustrated with gorgeous pencil drawings and full-color photographs, it's the perfect complement to the sounds of the night. Includes an hour-long audio CD of the nighttime sounds of 60 animals.

1 out of 5 stars Defective.......2007-10-13

I bought a book that comes with a CD: the CD is defective. It can no be played. I have written two letters asking what should I do. I want the product, but a need a CD that is not defective. No answer from Amazon.
I am very dissapointed. I am not buying another product until this matter is solved.

5 out of 5 stars What goes bump in the night.......2007-04-29

If you live in the woods or country and are curious about what goes bump in the night, this book and CD will explain those noises. We kept hearing a wonderful creature but had no way to identify it. Turns out it was a screech owl (they don't hoot nor do they screech). This book has also helped identify several frogs & night birds. As a bonus, Lang has a very pleasant voice and the CD is well made.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but covers to large an area.......2006-01-12

It's nice to listen to in the car (for a while, at least). It's pretty useless, though, since the geographical area is not limited enough. There might be a couple of those 60 animals in your area, but about 50 of 'em won't be. This should be a series of CD's: one for the northeast, one for the southwest....and so on.

4 out of 5 stars Soothing and informative.......2001-10-01

I love Lang Elliott's voice. It is very soothing and doesn't detract from the bird, reptile and insect sounds. I was able to identify a Horned Owl from the CD, so it is informative, too. The sounds are grouped on different tracks so it's easy to find the category you want, much better than a cassette tape.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and wonderful nature guide by Lang Elliott.......2000-03-29

This is a truly special release from Lang Elliott, the author of numerous nature CDs and books (including the splendid "Music of the Birds" and "Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs.") On this compact disc (or cassette) and its accompanying booklet, he introduces the sounds of common North American night animals. To my knowledge, no one else has compiled a field guide to the sounds of night animals with sounds from many groups of creatures all in one place (i.e., birds, mammals, amphibians, etc.)

The recording is a constant delight and will probably make you aware of the source of many sounds you have heard but not identified before. Don't be surprised to say, "So THAT'S what that is" many times while listening to the tape or CD. Also be prepared for surprises. Think you hear cats fighting outside your window at night? They may be cats, but they also could be raccoons, which often sound remarkably like angry felines. That strange, ghostly hiss or scream you may have heard at night in the country? An angry cat perhaps, but it might be a barn owl. And there are many other special sounds identified here: the rhythmic calls of nightjars like the whippoorwill, the trills and croaks of amphibians, the surprisingly snort of the white-tailed deer.

If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you must have this guide. Take it on a camping trip with you, if you have a portable CD player or cassette player. Those night woods will not seem so forbidding anymore once you know that most of the time, the strange and fascinating sounds you hear are made by completely harmless creatures.

4 out of 5 stars great pop-ups.......2007-09-10

This one is a great pop-up book, but not quite as entertaining as "Creepy Crawly Colors" -- we like the noisy crickets and the lightning bugs. The book is very durable, but there are fewer "surprises" than in "Creepy Crawly" -- we haven't looked at it as much.

I'm amazed at the durability of this book and "Creepy Crawly" -- the pop-ups don't tear easily, even under the determined assault of two little boys!

For another awesome pop-up book (very durable -- this is important!) try "The Wide-Mouthed Frog" by Kevin Faulkner -- nice surprises and very engaging.

my 6 year old daughter had a science lesson and this book was incorporated. great illustrations. great learning tool.

5 out of 5 stars "Where Are The Night Animals?" is excellent........2003-12-10

Though this book is designed for older children, my 2 1/2 year old loves it. Some of the text is beyond her appreciation right now(e.g. "echolocation, diurnal, nocturnal"), but she loves the realistic illustrations and the different story-like scenarios for each different featured animal. I have read it to her many times and will continue to do so.

5 out of 5 stars I love these books!.......2002-04-02

The entire series is excellent!!! I have all four and I highly reccomend them. They teach science, literature, native american culture, and give children a respect for the natural world at the same time. (there is even the occasional bit of math thrown in). My son loves doing the activities with me! Excellent for unit studies!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite of all the excellent "Keepers" series.......2000-10-16

While all of the "Keepers" books are excellent in their presentation of Native American stories and activities to enhance learning about the natural world, this one is my hands-down favorite. There is something magical about the night, and we have strayed so far from that magic in our incandescent world. The stories and activities in this book will allow you to try and recapture some of the enchantment of the nocturnal world for your kids and maybe even for yourself.

The stories themselves are very tellable. I have had sixth graders learn and tell these tales. The activities are broken into categories, such as the night sky or nocturnal animals. This is an excellent resource for anyone working with groups such as Scouts or nature centers, wishing to incorporate enjoyable activities and stories into their night-time programming.

As humans have done for eons before us, take this guidebook with you to your next campfire, and share the magic of stories spun by fireside.

4 out of 5 stars North Country Night.......2003-03-12

This is a story about the North Country, and how it is on a snowy night when all the people are in their cabins and houses asleep. Read along, as you experience each individual adventures of the animals. Travel with an owl one minute, then a gray coyote the next. Read about the fox, looking for a place to sleep. This story is an okay story, but really good for litte children who love animals. They can follow along with them, experiencing what they are to do next. The illustrations let you experience and see what the animals are getting into. Read this story to your littlest one, curled up on the couch with hot cocoa on a cold, snowy, winter evening, and they'll go to bed wondering, "What are the animals doing tonight?"

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book!.......2001-03-13

As night falls, animals of the north gradually appear to search for food. This book is beautifully illustrated and was another favorite of my children. Done in the hues of a bluish dusk/early evening.

5 out of 5 stars Twightlight.......2000-08-08

Daniel San Souci carries a soft tonal effect from daylight to dawn. The book is created on a pale blue stock. An environment pervades, which allows the reader to feel as if they are watching a live cast of characters from behind a tree on a cold winter's night.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful story and illustrations........1999-11-13

Daniel San Souci is a wonderful and sensitive writer and artist. He is a gifted gentleman who shows his kindness and understanding through his talent. This book is a must for any children's library. I will cherish my autographed copy for a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEAUTY AND QUIETUDE OF THE NIGHT.......1998-02-15

It is nighttime, and one by one the animals come out to enjoy the tranquil beauty of a winter night and search for a tasty meal. The realistic and beautiful illustrations and gentle text draw the reader/listener into the story. I have used this book in Pre-school Storytime programs. The children sit in hushed silence, not moving and sigh gently at the conclusion of the story. They love it!

Book Description

While you were sleeping...

one tiger went hunting in the jungle,

two mice made a warm,

cozy nest in the hay,

three bears played chase in the snow...

Take a trip with young Daisy through the animal world in this exquisitely illustrated counting book. When Daisy wakes up, her mother describes how animals all around the world play and swim and fly while she sleeps.

Children will count along with Daisy's mother, from "one tiger hunting in the jungle" to "ten penguins jumping out of the icy sea...to meet one hundred friends." And then they can count for themselves the many animals in Daisy's bedroom.

John Butler's lyrical text and rich, vivid illustrations make this a special book for sharing. Adults and children alike will be enchanted by the luminous beauty of Butler's stunning illustrations as they discover what animals do in the nighttime hours.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a charming beautiful book.......2005-06-17

This is such a beautifully illustrated book- my 16 month old son just loves it. He loves the moon and the stars and the illustrations of the moon, stars, and animals are just beautiful to look at. And along with the beautiful picures, the author also counts from 1-10 with the animals - 1 Tiger goes hunting (don't love hunting but I change that word), 2 mice cozy up together, 3 bears play chase etc. so it is fun to sometimes practice counting with him- even though it is a bit early for that! But, this is a wonderful nighttime story for children. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars While we sleep, someone else is playing!.......2005-04-27

I first got the board book version of this book for my daugther & really fell in love with both the story and the artwork! A few months later I happened to read a review where the person said there was a difference between the Hard cover and Board book version. So... I decided to also purchase the book in Hardcover as well.

Now that I have both side by side, in my eyes here is the difference between the 2 books. The Hardcover starts with a little girl being awoken by her mother in the morning, and while the girl is waking up her mother begins to talk about how all the animals that where awake last night while she was sleeping are now all sleeping, whiles she is now awake. From those 3 pages the books are both the same.... and then the hard back has 5 more pages at the end that the Board book does not.

I know that board books are small for small listeners with short attention spans, so I think the publishers choose to shorten a few pages that really do not matter if they are deleted from the book. The board book still stands alone as just as awesome without those 8 pages some of which are illustrations.

I use the board book at night before bed to show her that the world is big and while she is sleeping others are awake and so forth. The board book begins with the outline of a home against a stary, stary night. While I plan to use the hard cover book when I introduce her to it one morning or afternoon. Both books are illustrated so beautifully and it still to me is such a neat process that while we sleep, someone in the world is playing!

I have also seen this done in the "Family of the Earth" Books as well.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous New Children's Book.......2004-10-21

John Butler's WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, captures the essence of what animals do at night while a young child is tucked safely in his/her bed, soundly asleep. Ten different animals are featured throughout the pages of the book, including mice, tigers, penguins, and more. The lyrical prose will have very young children drifting off to sleep before the story is done, while at the same time will keep them dreaming about the lovely illustrations and animals contained throughout the story. A lovely bedtime book for all children, especially those who are under the age of 5.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and fun book........2003-06-17

My daughter received the large paper book for her 1st Christmas and loved it so much that it wore out and had to be discarded. She recently received the card board book for her 3 year birthday but it was a little disapointing because it didn't have the beginning page with Daisy's mother talking to her in bed and doesn't have the last pages with the 10 penguins joining 100 friends and with Daisy's room where you try to find the 10 penguins, which is what my daughter had especially enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars This one is a pleasure to open again and again.......2002-08-27

This book is a really great bed-time book for even the littlest listeners. But, it also teaches simple concepts such as counting to ten, and the names of animals.

The final two page spread contains a sort of "I Spy" game that includes all of the animals from the previous pages.

The illustrations in this book are especially well done. Bed time books are read so frequently, and so repeatedly, that it's great to have something that I look forward to looking at so often.

5 out of 5 stars A Grandma's Review.......2007-07-18

This book is excellent. I am a grandma who lives in the woods. I was tired of reading books to my grandchildren about farm animals. So I purchased every board book on forest animals that I could find on-line. Forest Bright, Forest Night is the best book of all my purchases.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch.......2007-04-09

What a wonderful book. So much to explore in the beautiful illustrations. You read. You count. You learn. You spy out hidden animals and numbers. More than a storybook it is an engaging adventure. Gave it as a gift to a preschooler. Intend to give it to several more.

A must for every class library. Effectively integrates reading, math and science.

5 out of 5 stars Educational, creative book with warm interestingly unique pictures........2006-10-12

This is a highly unique story that adults and children will both enjoy. Forest day depicts animals and their young in their habitats (while other animals that live and flourish in the forest night are sleeping in the same picture underneath) during the daylight hours for the first 11 pages of the book. The next pages compares forest day animals with others and gives factual information about them. The fun part about this book is that you have to turn the book upside down and around to read about forest night. The forest night animals are now awake and living in the moons light and the day time animals are sleeping underneath them. Utterly amazing illustrations with details of foot prints, younglings, nature and colors lead to a terrific story accompanied with rhyme, rhythm and fun words.

5 out of 5 stars Unique sea creatures and great pictures.......2005-11-15

We have so many counting books, but this is a special one. My 2.5 year old loves it, and I enjoy reading it as well. It features 20 different sea creatures, some I know, and some I'd never heard of before (nudibranches, basket stars, etc.), the rhymes flow nicely, and the pictures are beautiful. A winner.

    4 out of 5 stars Thumbs up.......2004-07-22

Yet another counting/rhyming picture book but the pictures and relatively unique animals make it worthwhile.

My children loved being able to learn more about the animals they saw and I even learned several interesting facts.

The author did a great job choosing which animals to include out of so many...a great variety and I appreciated that the book counted down as well as up.

5 out of 5 stars One Nighttime Sea ..........2003-09-02

I could tell this was no ordinary kids' counting book by the title and the stunning cover! Images of intricate paper collages grace the pages of this book. Artist Steve Jenkins does an exceptional job bringing nocturnal creatures of the sea to life with his outstanding collage illustrations. He captures nocturnal sea creatures in a very ecological and friendly way!

Author Deborah Lee Rose, a former national science writing fellow at University of California at Berkeley, is no stranger to science or childrens' books. This wonderful writer/artist duo combine their talent into one of the most mesmerizing picture books ever for kids ages 3 through 8!

Do your children ever ask questions about sea creatures? Well, if they do, this is the perfect book to properly introduce them to nocturnal sea creatures! From a blue whale calf to spider crabs; furry otters to sea lions, they'll be amazed at who lives in the sea!

This book captures the true essence of the creatures who live deep in the sea. It is a rhyming, fun-filled picture book which provides children with rhymes, counting, and science--all in one book!

This book would also lend well in the primary classroom, whether you are a kindergarten teacher looking for a great picture book or a primary science teacher looking for a springboard to your thematic science unit or an art teacher looking for examples or collage illustrations.

Counting along with this book, kids are in for a surprise as they complete numbers one through 10. Suddenly, like the flip of a speedy porpoise, the book counts backwards from 10 to one! Wow, that's sure to put a smile on your young pre-reader's face! And they thought the book was over when they reached the magical number 10!

For older children, the book provides additional information (in the last couple of pages) about the nighttime sea animals featured in the book. It is inspirational enough to start a wonderful discussion with your kids or class about the magic of the deep blue sea, and subtle enough to be the perfect bedtime book---learning numbers while gazing at the intricate paper collages. You can almost feel the texture as you admire the collages.

Vibrant and bold colors harmoniously combine with rhythmical, inspirational words in this wonderful nocturnal tour of the ocean. You almost expect a music track to follow. Ever wonder what the wonderful symphonies these animals can concoct when the lights go down?

Highly recommended...in the home, classroom or home school and truly a great read for kids of all ages. It brings the sea just a little closer to home (even if you live in the desert!).

    5 out of 5 stars Bedtime Favorite.......2007-03-28

Written in rhyme, this colorful picture book will soon become your child's favorite bedtime story. Creatures of the Night will explain the often scary sounds heard at night, shedding light on the creatures that come out to play.

The little "masked bandit" raccoon wears his clever disguise. The cute little field mice run, jump, and play. Perhaps one of the most prominent nighttime noises is the melody chirped by the crickets. They are pictured as happy smiling little critters. The frogs and toads join in the serenade, as the lightening bugs dance along. The coyote calls his friends to come and play. They walk and jump and run. They dance and sing their serenades until the night is done.

Written for children ages three to seven, it is also a book an older child will enjoy reading to a sibling. Creatures of the Night is colorfully illustrated by Rodger B. Wilson, who is the recipient of many awards for graphic design and illustrations. Author, Stephen J. Brooks has written several children's books. He has served as a Federal Agent for over a decade and writes to comfort children.

Has your young child ever wondered about those noises in the night, or about those creatures that come out to play only at night?

Creatures of the Night is a lovely rhyming story about those nocturnal creatures that "Come out to run and play," like "The sly and wily old raccoon,/With a mask around its eyes,/Sneaks about in search of food/in his ever so clever disguise."

Other creatures of the night mentioned in the book include the owl, field mice, crickets, frogs, fireflies, coyote, opossum, and muskrats.

The rhymes are delightful and the illustrations beautiful, with a serene, peaceful quality to them, bringing to life the magic of the night and its creatures. It is the kind of book young children will want to listen to in bed at night many times, if only to look at the lovely images of the animals.

A book that both teaches and stimulates young children's imagination, Creatures of the Night is a keeper, and well-worth its hardcover price.

Creatures Of The Night is a children's picturebook about the various creatures of the night, who come out under the cover of dark to forage for food, and hoot, howl or serenade. The rhyming verse and endearing color artwork of animals under a black night sky make Creatures of the Night an ideal read-aloud story to young children, especially just before bedtime. "Returning home to open arms, / Are the creatures of the day, / As the creatures of the night / Come out to run and play."
