THREE RIVERS: THE YUKON'S GREAT BOREAL WILDERNESS explores a region of vast wilderness previously unknown to the outside world, but is a major environmental hotspot of modern times as it represents one of the last, key pieces of the boreal region. With the Mackenzie Valley pipeline proposal looming to threaten it, the Three Rivers region is in the news and deserving of this coffee-table survey, which packs in color photos and art and writing by major authors to remind of the region's importance.

Accessing a great wilderness area..... GerryM.......2006-02-25
After visiting the yukon(from Australia)and travelling by road I was interested in learning about more inaccessable areas of the Yukon. The book is first and foremost a photographic journey in the great boreal wilderness area by way of the Snake, Bonnet Plume and Wind rivers. The photographs are spectacular but are accompanied by well written text and great descriptive writing by a number of different writers who made the trip. It also is informative where relevent of the history of the area and has just the right balance. The book is a focus on the need to conserve the area, and it successfully does this by "taking you there" and helping you see and feel it for yourself. It does not focus on an anti development theme as such but achieves the environmental focus in a positive and stunning manner.The book is a delight to look at and read and is well set out and captioned. The gwich'in inhabitants of the area and their lives are well integrated into the story and adds to make this a book worth having and revisiting. I can appreciate the care that went into preparing this book so that it is immediately visually stunning but then has wonderful text to read and enjoy and have some appeal to everyone.

A magnificent combination of pictures and text/stories on the Yukon. Great to see such a good book about a part of the world one rarely reads or hears about.

For All Who Love the Game.......2001-10-05
Practical look at the game of golf for women. A quick read. Very enjoyable yet sound advice.
Enjoyable but not too informative.......1999-10-01
Pleasant book, however not too informative. There are better women's golf books out there, for example "Golf is a Woman's Game" is really inspirational. However in all, "For all who Love the Game" makes a nice gift or an easy read, but you could do better.

A haunting and gripping book .......2006-03-14
A dark thriller set in Albania's Northern Plateau in the inter-war years. Gjorg finds, despite himself, that he is trapped in a blood feud which has consumed the lives of so many of his family for several generations. His path crosses with that of a rich playboy couple from Tirana, whose honeymoon in the mountains ends up being more adventurous than they bargained for.
I couldn't put this book down. It is not exactly light reading - in fact it's bloody depressing - but its plot doesn't let you go and confirms Kadare's position as a master.
Better Dead than Red?.......2005-08-10
This is the fourth book by Ismail Kadare that I have read. I have come to look forward to his insight into a very different world. As a youth, I became fascinated with the hidden world of Albania where Stalinism still thrived and the outside world was essentially forbidden. What secrets were there that were hidden in a 20th Century European country with a discredited form of government and a 19th Century approach to the present. When the Hoxa government finally fell and a little light creeped into Albania, even weirder things began to emerge. For a while, the economy of the country was based on pyramid schemes. Unfortunately, it was the fall of Tito that unleashed the centuries-old hatreds of the region that plunged the Albanians into yet another tenuous existance. Out of all the newspaper and magazine articles I could get ahold of, nothing gave me the clarity of perspective better than the writings of Ismail Kadare.
"Broken April" is the grimmest picture of Albania while also seeming to be the most illuminating as well. This is a portrait of a society in the high plains of Albania where the code of vendettas is so fundamental that its' laws supercede all others. It is the story of a man trapped by the code and an man and a wife who, as outsiders, become trapped as well. It is a story of a society that is fueled by death and leaves no one untouched. In the explanation of the systematic rules and regulations of the "Kanun" we understand the futility that life must present to these people. Whether or not this is an allegory to the Hoxa government or an attempt to share the reality of an actual society in the recent past, I cannot say. For me the story ends with a message that people aren't victims of their society; they ARE their society. Terror exists only where it is permitted to exist.
I highly recomment "Broken April" to those who would like a Kafkaesque experience in literature. For me, Kadare has written another excellent book but not quite up to his proven potential.
Baffled by the spelling.......2005-07-25
Great book, great plot... you read the reviews. However, I can't understand why they'd write the word as "bessa" when it's "besa." And it's not "Bessian," but "Besian." It's not "lahoute," but "lahute." There is no such thing as two s's in the Albanian language. Not if there isn't an "h" following the two s's. It just doesn't exist. There is no other exception.
I'm giving it 4 stars because I liked his other book better, "The Three-Arched Bridge." Somehow, I would have accepted this book with 5 stars had anyone else written it, but Ismail Kadare is not just anyone.

Other reviewers have described very well what this book is about and the spell it casts on the reader. I would add only this: it seems to me that the travellers, Bessian and Diana, represent two sides of the author himself. Bessian is fascinated by the majestic primitivity of the mountain people; he finds a rationale in the blood-feud enjoined by the Kanun, and, because so many people are involved with it, he sees fatalist acceptance of an early and sudden death giving a kind of intensity to life. In some of his other powerful novels (The File on H, The Three-Arched Bridge, The General of the Dead Army), Kadare shows a similar Romantic fascination with a society of Noble Savages - savage, it need hardly be said, in a violent sense that is a million miles away from their peaceful Rousseauesque prototypes! Only the laws of hospitality redeem this society somewhat, though even here the Kanun seems positively to glory in its extremism and irrationality. Then, in Diana, Kadare shows, I suspect, the other side of his personality: perhaps some sense of guilt about this very fascination. In his treatment of Diana, Kadare is still a Romantic: she cannot or will not find the words with which to confront her husband's obsession. But her muteness conveys better (and more artistically) her sense of horror than any more articulate and rational exposition of it could do.
