Book Description

The last decades of the twentieth century saw a flowering of knowledge about the behaviour, ecology, and evolution of mammals, including ourselves. This new information is brought together, in highly accessible form, by an international team of scientists led by David Macdonald of Oxford University. Uniquely, the information is both authoritative enough to be used as a serious reference work by professionals and presented clearly and attractively enough to fascinate anyone with an interest in wildlife. The New Encyclopedia of Mammals builds on the success of its first edition, published in 1983, to produce an up to date, authoritative, and hugely readable species by species guide to all the mammals of the world.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource.......2007-06-20

I have an older edition of this book, just found this 2001 edition (new) at a book sale at Barnes & Noble for only $20.00! As a Docent at a local wildlife facility, this is an excellent resource book, as well as good reading material. Super illustrations, with easy-to-understand text makes this a "must-have" for anyone interested in the Mammal world.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent survey of the latest developments in mammal science.......2006-12-14

Both high school and public library reference holdings strong in animal science will find the second updated edition of the three-volume set The Encyclopedia of Mammals to be an excellent survey of the latest developments in mammal science. A team of editors have produced volumes which lend to both serious study and leisure browsing with a blend of color photos and drawings and articles newly revised to reflect the latest research and trends. From maps demonstrating species distribution patterns to articles that survey conservation issues and mammal natural history, the set seeks to clarify scientific terms and perspectives and will prove a delightful resource for any student of natural history.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book - Hard To Find Under $100.......2005-03-21

"The Encyclopedia Of Mammals" is a wonderful book. BN offered a one-volume edition with over 930 pages until sometime in 2003 for under $50. The book covers all the mammals in the world in full color with comprehensive text and weighs about 12 lbs. The current offering is a 3-volume edition by Facts On File Natural Science Library at about $300.

              Book Description

The year was 1979 and the fifteen teenagers on the Crenshaw High Cougars were the most talented team in the history of high school baseball. Most of the team were drafted into professional baseball. Two of them, Darryl Strawberry and Chris Brown, would reunite as teammates on a National League All-Star roster. But Michael Sokolove's The Ticket Out is more a story of promise denied than of dreams fulfilled.

              5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-05-15

An "excellent" book. A story detailing many people, but, in particular a person of "exceptional ability" and "train wreck" personality. A book everyone should read and learn from. It's a "fine line" that seperates any of us from following the path "Darryl Strawberry" took. Get it, Read it, Pass it on.

              4 out of 5 stars LIFE + SPORTS = LIFE.......2005-04-27

One of the greatest anomalies associated with athletics is that the "Best" are many times not successful. Talk to any professional athlete and they can tell you stories about great athletes that they played with or against that were better than they were, or even better than anyone that they had ever seen, but didn't make it to the pros or into to world class competitions. The variables of injuries, families, lack of discipline, luck or just plain life can wreck the possibility of any athletic career. Every practice, game, interview or even date can end the journey. More than any other profession, whether they show respect for it or not, professional athletes will tell you that they are one of the luckiest people on Earth. Their talent, luck and extreme level of desire does set them apart from most mortal men. The Ticket Out is one of the best presentations on how Life plus Sports usually just equals Life.

The Boys Of Crenshaw each had all the talent and training requirements necessary to be successful professional baseball players. Although they didn't really know it then, their team is American legend and they provide us with a very compelling drama. As a team they were the perfect research data pool to logically examine life and sports. As a group whose careers were not affected by major injuries their results of everything from incarceration with "three strikes" to one of the greatest natural home run hitters to ever play the game really does cover all possibilities, except the status of hero.

Sports or not, everyone in the game of life is dealt a hand. Even a group of the "Best of the Best" still have to deal with their own personal hand of cards. The Ticket Out shows how if you start in South Central Los Angeles, trying to be successful in any profession, it's a challenge. Although the exposure and training is there, the baggage a Black family carries to California in a migration for a better life can be a lot to overcome. Also children growing up in a community that is not always honest with itself can make life very daring.

Through baseball, The Ticket Out is really a great story about how South Central Los Angeles was created and how it can effect even the greatest talents. This baseball book about life is very interesting. I think we need more books that use our common interests to discuss our lives.

The most disturbing thing for any real baseball fan will be the lack of discussion about Lee May, who did have a real professional baseball career.

Unfortunately, people that are not into baseball will probably not buy this book and miss out on one of the most simple yet informative discussions on prison terms and the "three strikes" laws that you will ever find.

I'm a baseball fan and The Ticket Out provides a lot of interesting baseball and a lot of Daryl Strawberry legend, but it's really about Life + Sports = Life.

              5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!.......2004-12-03

This book was truly an outstanding piece of work. When I purchased it, I thought it would mostly be about Darryl Strawberry and a little about the others. I was wrong, Michael Sokolove does an outstanding job researching (and you can see he has spent countless hours finding out information about all the players and Brooks Hurst) and portraying each of the individuals who made up the team. One gets to know the individuals and the author makes you want to reach out to those who got caught up in the inner city after their opportunity to leave was lost. The only part missing from this book was the only player drafted not to be profiled: Lee Mays. The book leaves you wondering what happened to him.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall book, but not really about baseball.......2004-08-11

I have to say, I was a little mislead by the subtitle of this book, Darryl Strawberry and the boys of Crenshaw. I was expecting the book to give me more about the boys, and what happened to them, both during their days at Crenshaw and afterwards.
The author provides some of that, but he also provides alot of social commentary. Now, while it was interesting to learn of the conditions of the prisons in the 1990s, and the affect of the three strikes law, I wanted to learn more about what happened to the guys, and why. To hear more about baseball.
Still, overall it's a good book. Just doesn't really delve too deeply into it's title subjects.

5 out of 5 stars Urban commentary within a baseball story.......2004-07-13

I could hardly put this book down. It is so much more than a story about baseball. I don't like the Mets, and I never cared for Darryl Strawberry. This book is really about neither. Instead, it is a social commentary about the plight of the black man in one arena of life. The small window of opportunity that some find while it eludes others (or others elude it); The subtle racism that seeps even into sport - it's all in this book, but the author doesn't hit you over the head with it. By the end, you feel compassion for some, pity for others, and rejoice in the triumph of a few. If you are looking for just a baseball book, you need to find a lesser story. This transcends baseball.

5 out of 5 stars Grammar with a funny bone.......2006-03-11

Almost nothing is as boring as learning the rules of grammar.
The Elephants of Style, however, makes the subject humorous and easier to both read and learn about. The author uses great(and often funny ) examples to teach students about everything from parts of speech to plagarism. I would recommend this book to college freshman, English teachers, or anyone struggling with grammar.
Of course, grammar may never lose the title of "boringest of them all," but at least there is a little humor at the end of the tunnel.

4 out of 5 stars Always Useful, Sometimes Funny.......2004-08-02

By Bill Marsano. What a jolly season for word-lovers this is, what with Lynn Truss's "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" and this book by Bill Walsh coming along neck-and-neck and cheek-by-jowl. Walsh, who is the copy chief of the Washington Post, has written a far broader work than Truss's, with punctuation just one of the things covered (and usually very well covered). There's also grammar here and more important there is style.

The author of such a book sets himself up, always. Many readers will assume or claim that he's preaching perfection and will therefore fall upon tiny errors yelling nyah-nyah in spiteful disvalidation of his whole work, of his very right to speak at all. Sorry but, admirable as it may be, prefection eludes and always will (Lynn Truss's first error is in her subtitle!). Mark Twain said, of perfection in English grammar, "the thing just can't be done." So let's be willing to give a little, and even accept the odd contradiction.

That done, we find a pretty useful guide. It's mostly newspaper-oriented, but it's still a help to the ordinary writer and ordinary person struggling to commit a sentence and finding between the opening capital and the closing period a morass of weird plurals, nightmare collectives, number-of-the-verb, stylistic conventions, punctuational deadfalls and a lot of other horrors that make not ending with a preposition a treat (which taboo is, by the way, nonsense, as Walsh neatly explains). Walsh deals with most problems briskly and helpfully, and if you keep this book ever close to your heart it won't be long before you can toss off elegant vanity plates, bumperstickers and ransom notes without so much as a by-your-leave. And you will begin to enjoy doing so, because you won't be scared out of your wits half the time. (Most people dread writing as they dread public speaking.)

I am generally dubious of copy editors; I consider them a species of vermin that should be hunted for sport. But I will go a long way with Walsh because he clearly thinks about the language and tries to make intelligent, workable decisions that help reader and writer alike. (Most copy editors simply trot out their pet peeves and hobby-horses, salt with ignorance and prejudice, and then damage the writer's copy, the hideous effects invisible until the crime appears in print.)

I will unyieldingly dispute with him on two points, however. First, (free-lance) writers should absolutely not waste any time studying client magazines to learn their style. Magazines routinely pay writers poorly and abuse them in general; if they want their stylebooks followed, let the editors do some work for a change. (Editors don't have jobs. They have lunch.) Second, what's this foolishness about a ship being referred to as "it"?

That's an example of what offends me most about copy editors: their char-woman's mentality. Always trying to neaten up; emptying the ashtray every time the ash hits the glass; making you move so they can plump up the pillows. Busy, busy, busy! The net result of all this is damage to a language of which varioty is its chiefest glory. Referring to ships as feminine is a tradition many centuries old: it goes back to the Romans; it is established and understood; it is not to be dismissed by some petty tyrant with an itchy pencil. Maybe it's a question of political correctness. Maybe someone is pained because it excludes an entire sex (the male, I believe). Frankly I'm disinclined to believe that this will cause little boys everywhere to be discouranged from becoming ocean liners, but copy editors might very well fall for that.--Bill Marsano is a professional writer and editor.

5 out of 5 stars The next Bill Safire?.......2004-04-29

Visiting the front lines of the grammar and usage wars with Bill Walsh is a pleasure for writers and readers alike. Like his previous work, Lapsing Into a Comma, this entertaining and enlightening book shows Walsh has got a great ear and a great sense of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Who left me out of the ýGrammar can now be amusingý loop ?!.......2004-03-28

I found myself laughing out loud as I read Bill Walsh's "The Elephant's of Style."

Reminiscent of "Woe is I" this title actually entertains as it enlightens. Some of Walsh's best lines were "Split infinitives are the chicken cacciatore of the English Language" and "Who died and left me in charge of the English language?"

I want to know where Bill Walsh was when I was being drilled in grammar back in school! First they started teaching kids phonics and blends using fun songs and hand motions and now this?! I missed out on all the fun!

I especially enjoyed the section entitled "The Lies Your English Teacher Told You: Big Myths of English Usage" (I actually wiped my brow at one point in that chapter.) His appendix, "The Curmudgeon's Stylebook" is a valuable addition as well.

Wonderful stuff, easy to remember and apply.... Excellent for those who got stuck in the "grammar rules" and "strict critiques" from the past.... Free up the negative through process and just get through to the mechanics in this user friendly guide. Book Description

The very name Lucrezia Borgia conjures up everything that was sinister and corrupt about the Renaissance—incest, political assassination, papal sexual abuse, poisonous intrigue, unscrupulous power grabs. Yet, as bestselling biographer Sarah Bradford reveals in this breathtaking new portrait, the truth is far more fascinating than the myth. Neither a vicious monster nor a seductive pawn, Lucrezia Borgia was a shrewd, determined woman who used her beauty and intelligence to secure a key role in the political struggles of her day.

Drawing from a trove of contemporary documents and fascinating firsthand accounts, Bradford brings to life the art, the pageantry, and the dangerous politics of the Renaissance world Lucrezia Borgia helped to create.

                    3 out of 5 stars Worth a read.......2007-07-21

ok, I admit it, the book is kind of dry. There is a lot of dates, names and references to archives and documentation. It does not read like a novel, nor does it conjure images of a renaissance play...It is not, at least superficially, an entertaining read.

However, if you are into this sort of thing, and somewhat addicted to the history channel, so be it. Knowing the myths and rumor surrounding Lucrezia, this book provides a candid look that is base on solid research. It makes her seem human, although less exotic than we would like. For people who are interested in the "truth" of Lucrezia (at least what we can confirm or speculate from the research), this is worth a read.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing. Very dull. .......2007-03-08

The prose in this book drags itself from page to page with all the appeal of a wet blanket. I received it as a present - very much looking forward to a 'good read'. Instead, I found the prose dull, the story disappointingly assembled and the insights into the gusto of the Borgia's lives were meagre. The stage is littered with characters with few attempts made to sift them for the reader into categories of importance.

One of the most peculiar experiences, was my difficulty remembering what I had read the previous day when beginning a new section. Too dull and narratively undifferentiated to be worth bothering with in my opinion.

2 out of 5 stars Too many details, too little narrative.......2006-02-13

If you are desparately searching for the exact fasions and skin care of Renaissance ladies, here's your book. Also good for those of you interested in despots posing as religious leaders.

For anyone wanting to dive into Lucrezia's life and personality, look elsewhere. That woman barely makes an appearance in this book.

                    2 out of 5 stars Dismal. .......2005-11-29

I hate to repeat the views of others, but this book really is a travesty. I was doing a term paper on Lucrezia and thought this book might help. The cover and the promise of dispelling the myths of Lucrezia lured me in, but I could barely comprehend what Sarah Bradford was trying to say throughout the entire book. The whole thing is just a jumble of names, places, dates, and ...more names. There is no narrative, it even goes for pages at a time without even mentioning Lucrezia's name. This book should be retitled "The Political Background of the Time that Just Happened to Include Lucrezia Borgia, Who Will Not Really Be Discussed".
                    Such potential!
                    Pity.

5 out of 5 stars More than just a woman of her time ..........2005-08-23

I cannot agree at all with the reviewers who found this book "boring." Lucrezia's early life, before she was Duchess of Ferrara, was inextricably caught up in the lives of her brother and her father. She didn't keep a diary, and there are few letters from her during the years of her first and second marriages; all observations about her motives and her views came from outside observers. She was a pretty pawn, and she was voiceless. As Duchess of Ferrara, she was minutely observed, and still was not truly free to speak in her own voice. However, her position meant that her letters were preserved, and so we have the correspondence with Pietro Bembo, Federigo Gonzaga, and Alfonso d'Este that show a woman who adroitly played the hand she was dealt. I don't know what other readers were expecting - breathless declarations and confessions in Lucrezia's own words, maybe, but these are declarations that just do not exist. It is necessary to read between the lines. Even the wardrobe descriptions (which I loved, by the way, because I do historical costuming and re-enacting) added to the portrait of Lucrezia.
