Book Description
The Molecular Biology of Chloroplasts and Mitochondria in Chlamydomonas provides a comprehensive coverage of chloroplast and mitochondrial biogenesis and function. The book presents the current status of research on the molecular genetics of chloroplast gene expression. It describes the intricate cooperative interplay between the chloroplast and nuclear compartments which underlies the assembly of the photosynthetic apparatus. It also shows the power of chloroplast reverse genetics which has been used with considerable success to investigate structure-function relationships in several photosynthetic complexes. The book highlights the features of Chlamydomonas and the technological advances which make the alga uniquely suited to a multidisciplinary approach to study photosynthesis and its regulation under various environmental and stress conditions. The book is intended for a wide audience, but is specifically designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and researchers in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology, biophysics, plant biology, phycology and biotechnology.
Customer Reviews:
the new testament of green yeast.......2001-01-31
This book covers not only the state of the art in using Chlamydomonas to study chloroplasts and mitochondria, it has useful chapters on general chlamydomonas techniques such as transformation. Definately a useful book for any lab using Chlamydomonas. It is probably too expensive for most individuals, which is why I only give it four stars.

Product Description
Plant organelles have intrigued biologists since the discovery of their endosymbiontic origin and maternal inheritance. The first application of organelle biotechnology was the role of cytoplasmic male sterility in hybrid seed production and Green Revolution\". In modern times, plant organelles are again leading the way for the creation of genetically modified crops. On a global scale, 75% of GM crops are engineered for herbicide resistance and most of these herbicides target pathways that reside within plastids. Several thousand proteins are imported into chloroplasts that participate in biosynthesis of fatty acids, amino acids, pigments, nucleotides and numerous metabolic pathways including photosynthesis. Thus, from green revolution to golden rice, plant organelles have played a critical role in revolutionizing agriculture.
This book details not only basic concepts and current understanding of plant organelle genetics and molecular biology but also focuses on the synergy between basic biology and biotechnology. Forty four authors from nine countries have contributed twenty four chapters containing many figures and tables. Section 1 on organelle genomes and proteomes discusses molecular features of plastid and mitochondrial genomes, evolutinary origins, somatic and sexual inheritance, proteomics, bioinformatics and functional genomics. Section 2 on organelle gene expression and signalling discusses transcription, translation, RNA processing/editing, introns and splicing, protein synthesis, proteolysis, import of proteins into chloroplast and mitochondria and their regulation. Section 3 on organelle biotechnology discusses chloroplast and nuclear genetic engineering for biotic/abiotic stress tolerance, improved fatty acid/amino acid biosynthesis, biopharmaceuticals, biopolymers and biomaterials, cytoplasmic male sterility for hybrid seed production, plant improvement and restoration of fertility.
This book is designed to serve as a comprehensive volume and reference guide for teachers, advanced undergraduates and graduate students and researchers in plant molecular biology and biotechnology.

Book Description
Advances in molecular biology and cell culture techniques have provided impetus to investigations of plant mitochondria. The organization of mitochondrial genomes has been intensely studied in maize, wheat,
Oenothera, petunia,
Brassica, and a few other species. These investigations have disclosed an unusually large and plastic genome, a unique organization based on a master chromosome and subgenomic chromosomes, and extra mitochondrial elements. The structural RNAs of plant mitochondria have furnished several new and exciting discoveries; they include the import of tRNAs into the mitochondria, editing of mRNAs, and the `relaxed' nature of mitochondrial gene promoters. Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is the most common mitochondrial gene mutation; it has, therefore, received extraordinary attention. Several mitochondrial gene mutations have been implicated in causing CMS, and attention is now focusing on the mechanism that causes pollen sterility, and how nuclear restorer genes interact with CMS genes to suppress sterility. Recently, a few other mitochondrial genes have been identified and characterized, which affect important mitochondrial fusions. Mitochondrial polypeptides, both nuclear and mitochondrial, are being studied to learn how they interact to form functional complexes, and how proteins are imported into the mitochondria. Protoplasm fusion experiments have provided a new and exciting means of recombining mtDNA that have generated interesting mutants, including CMS. Mitochondrial DNA replication is focusing on plasmid-like DNA and their origins of replication. Together, these studies have furnished insights into the origin of plant mitochondrial genomes and the relationships among plant species. This volume describes these many new and exciting findings on plant mitochondria.

Book Description
In 1985, at age 18, Tania Aebi sailed around the world alone. She became instantly famous with Maiden Voyage, the best-selling book she wrote about the solo trip. In over twenty years of cruising by herself and with family, and leading ten-day flotillas to charter destinations in a professional capacity, she has gathered many anecdotes, observations, opinions, cautionary tales and advice. Indeed, she has been around. She was hired as a columnist in 1997 by the fledging sailing magazine Latitudes and Attitudes. âCasual and friendly in its approach to the sailing world, the magazineâs tone provided me with a place to explore my own reflections on what I already knew and continued to learn about the sailing way of life and how to share it all with others.â In this, her first book since Maiden Voyage, there is something for the armchair sailor dreaming about sailing off one day, as well as for the sailor in the cockpit actively chasing those horizons.
Customer Reviews:
A little disappointing...........2007-04-27
When I read Maiden Voyage by Tania Aebi, I thought it was one of the best, well written accounts on the market...a truly amazing story. I was disappointed in this one however in that it lacked Tania's excellent and detailed story telling, and much of it was just a summary of accounts in her previous book.
At Long Last!.......2005-12-25
When I was a freshman in high school, I read Tania Aebi's first book, Maiden Voyage, about her solo circumnavigation of the globe at the age of 18. That book was a huge inspiration to me, and I was thrilled to find out she had a new book out. I've Been Around is a collection of essays that will update Aebi's fans as to her life after her trip. More than that, this new book evokes the same sense of wonder and inspiration as Maiden Voyage. In fact, when I first purchased I've Been Around, I was so excited that I began reading it on my walk from the bookstore to my car. I parked far enough away that I was able to finish the first essay I had turned to: "Close Call". Immediately, this essay put me back in that state of mind which Maiden Voyage evoked; a sense of the amazing potential we all have. "Close Call" is about the story Aebi tells people when they ask if she ever felt in danger from anyone she met on her voyage. Aebi relays a story of meeting some fishermen off the coast of Sri Lanka. Ultimately, the story is not of the danger she was in, but of how helpful the fishermen were. In fact, she finds out years later just how safe she really was, and how sincere these men were in their concern and helpfulness towards this young woman alone at sea. I think tales of the inherent goodness of people are more necessary now than ever. "Close Call" will be the essay I share with the many people who tell me that they are scared to travel overseas. The fact that I was nearly run-over by a Honda Element while reading this essay, however, taught me I need to be more careful while close to home.
I've Been Around is written with the same humble, down to earth tone as Maiden Voyage. While there are plenty of sailing stories from trips she has taken since her solo voyage, what appeals to me about Aebi's writing is how she applies the lessons learned from her trips to real life. I've personally never been on a sail boat. The writing in this book is less about sailing and more about how to be resourceful and inventive in order to survive the many day-to-day and extraordinary challenges we all face. I loved reading I've Been Around and I highly recommend it to all sailors and non-sailors out there.
"I've Been Around".......2005-10-13
As a long-time follower and fan of Tania Aebi, and reader of her first book, "Maiden Voyage," the account of her solo circumnavigation as the youngest woman to accomplish such a remarkable feat, I waited in great anticipation for the release of her latest book, "I've Been Around." This compilation of her articles with her musings on not only the sailing life, but how intertwined that life can be with so many other aspects of living, is wonderful! It's a joy to learn about what is happening to her since her voyage and to be able to peek into the mind of this very special person. For the true adventurer or even the adventure wanna-be, I highly recommend Ms. Aebi's new book.
Collection of old columns from Attitudes and Latitudes.......2005-10-10
I was very excited to get this book. I love Tania's column in Attitude's. Then to find out, she just took her old columns, kind of sorted them by topic, and stuck them in book form....Boo.
I hope she sits down and writes a book from scratch, looking back at her circumnavigation, her life since then. That could be a great book.

Book Description
Ways with Words is a classic study of children learning to use language at home and at school in two communities only a few miles apart in the south-eastern United States. â~Roadvilleâ is a white working-class community of families steeped for generations in the life of textile mills; â~Tracktonâ is a black working-class community whose older generations grew up farming the land but whose current members work in the mills. In tracing the childrenâs language development the author shows the deep cultural differences between the two communities, whose ways with words differ as strikingly from each other as either does from the pattern of the townspeople, the â~mainstreamâ blacks and whites who hold power in the schools and workplaces of the region. Employing the combined skills of ethnographer, social historian, and teacher, the author raises fundamental questions about the nature of language development, the effects of literacy on oral language habits, and the sources of communication problems in schools and workplaces.
Customer Reviews:
important piece of work.......2007-05-04
As a graduate student in English, I am not one who wanted to take any courses on rhetoric and composition. I signed up for one class this semester that focused on literacy and race. This book was a required reading. I was actually one of the only students who liked this book. Heath immerses herself in the communities of Trackton and Roadville. As an instructor of some of the local teachers, she decided to look into the literacy learning of these two communities. Trackton, an all black community, consists of people reading to learn. In Roadville, the all-white community is struggling with desegregation and parents wanting their children to learn the "right" things. The study of the Piedmont Carolinas--the area where the two communities are located--is important because it specifies that culture has everything to do with the way language and literacy is learned. I give it four stars because in the course of a ten year study, it did not seem as if she gathered a lot of research. She seemed to focus only on their lifestyles.
Shirley Brice Heath Has a "Way With Words".......2000-08-23
Language is power. Heath, a reflective practitioner of both human nature and schooling, provides an in-depth view of communities which epitomize the struggle for such power. In her ethnographic study of Trackton and Roadville, Heath lays bare the socializing process of children through words. The discontinuity between home and school is disturbing; a realization that students who do not fit the traditional way of schooling are left behind. Clearly illustrated is the need for teachers and students to bridge the gap which exists in relation to both language and culture, for without this effort some students will never acquire the power needed to take control of their education or pursue opportunities from which they have previously been excluded. This is must reading for student ethnographers, doctoral students, and those dedicated to school reform, particularly those in the areas of diversity in public schools, and language. This extraordinary book compares favorably to "Growing Up Literate: Learning From Inner-City Families" by Denny Taylor & Catherine Dorsey-Gaines.
A Teacher's View.......2000-04-03
Teaching in a high school with a large number of minority children can be challenging. After reading this book, recommended by the debate teacher, I feel that I am better prepared. This book is an excellent resource for those wanting to understand the student from a background different form their own. If you plan to work in public school, this book is a must-read. I borrowed a friend's book, and then decided I had to have a copy of my own.

Customer Reviews:
Supplement on Sharn.......2007-02-12
Sharn: City of Towers is a nice addition to any Eberron collection. I found that it was a good book to help plan an adventure or a course of action because the layout of the book is not very good. So it actually takes a while to find a district of Sharn on the spot. There is no index in the book so you kinda have to guess where to look. Unless you read this book all the way through you will never really know what's in it. It does do a good job laying out the different districts of Sharn and gives some good NPC info. Otherwise I would say the book is a DM manual for sure.
I do enjoy this book and the content of it is useful, it's just hard to figure out. Also the CD that comes with this book is a nice soundtrack for gameplay.
All roads lead to Sharn.......2006-03-19
This book is only useful if you are a DM running an Eberron Champagn. If that describes you, then this book is a must have. Most modules, characters or general adventures start out in Sharn, the capital of Korrivare's melting pot. It's the onlt place really that anyone of any race and nation can meet up, without half of them being persicuted and hunted before you start. This book details down to every districe and level what Sharn is. It also provides NPCs, such as the Mayor of Sharn. This book also normalizes an important city, in that since you don't need to invent it, the city's integrity will run throughout your champagn and someone elses. Take note that this book is only background fluff. There are a few city maps, but other then that it's purely information.
Also take note that the CD is poor at best.
Sharn: City of Adventure!.......2006-03-05
If you're looking for a highly detailed city book for an Eberron campaign you can't go wrong here. Sharn provides endless outlets for adventure, from thieves guilds to corrupt officials to exotic and interesting locales in the city itself.
This setting book is focused almost exclusively on the city of Sharn itself, with only a brief discussion of the rest of Eberron and how it relates to Sharn politically and economically. Those who are looking for additional crunch - rules and Prestige Class - will be disappointed, though what is here is very well integrated with the city.
The bulk of the book breaks the city down into Districts and presents extensive information on these smaller sections of the city. Prominent businesses, guilds, NPCs, and other such information is presented. Politics, law and order, and life in Sharn each receive their own detailed chapter.
Eberron fans can't pass this one up. While the information is only focused on the city of Sharn, the feel of the book is entirely Eberron.
Love of Sharn.......2006-03-02
I found the book to paint the city in vibrant tones. It took the immense job of describing a multilevel edifice of a city in a way that was while general provided specifics for character where needed. Over all a very enjoyable read as well as informative.
Great Book - Index available.......2005-02-04
I would agree with the other reviewers in that this book is an excellent buy but for it not having an index. Luckily, the author of the book, Keith Baker, has been putting together a detailed index on his website.
You can download it for free here:
