Book Description

A newly hatched Emperor penguin wants more than anything to look like his tall, strong father. But when his own fluffy gray feathers start to fall out, Little Penguin is sure his wish will never come true. It takes a long ocean journey and some gentle words of wisdom from his mother before he realizes that he has become what he most wanted to be after all.

Nature lovers of all ages will delight in the captivating illustrations and the reassuring story about growing up. On every page, lavish embossing illuminates the frosty beauty of the Antarctic setting and adds intriguing texture to the feathers and footprints of the creatures that live there.

3 out of 5 stars Tries to cover too much ground.......2005-02-27

I was hoping for a book that focused on the 'real' experiences of a baby penguin, and the losing of the feathers does this, but the rest of the book is a bit diluted. The author tries to touch upon the baby being like its daddy and its getting lost, all while undergoing a physical transformation, but I would have preferred a more focused story. The encounters with other animals are extraneous, but I was hoping for something more informational than entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Timeless, Familiar Tale with some Fact-Learning, too........2004-01-04

This durable, thick cross between a board book and a regular paged book for young children follows a familiar tale. Little penguin is born, doesn't follow parent's direction... gets temporarily lost... finds a wise creature of another sort who assists him in finding his way...begins losing feathers and then is refound and found out that losing his feathers is just perfect..

Sounds like the lives of many of US, only in in Animal Sense as well as many other books and legends.

The reason this book works is because it is timeless and you can engage any age child in conversation around the story, the illustrations, the situations the little Penguins is in which may be similar to the child's.

I also learned a very fun fact right on the first two pages... so you might gain more than you think in reading this colorfully illustrated title.

Book Description

Far, far south, in the strange and beautiful land of Antarctica, it is dark both day and night all winter long. When at last spring comes, the penguins and seals raise their young. But, one year, loud, unfamiliar sounds announce the arrival of a new presence -- one the creatures hope can share this fragile world with them in peace.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Introduction to Being Green.......2004-08-06

This is a story about the emperor penguins of Antarctica and it touches on the Weddel seals and the Adélie penguins as well. The first have of this beautifully illustrated book explains how the female emperor lays her egg and how the male tends to it for up to two months while the female is at sea. It's just a fascinating introduction for a child about how different animals can be from us and also, how important they are.

The story also introduces the child to the effects man is having on the lives of the animals that live in the frozen south. Ms. Cowcher's drawings are just so captivating, that your child can't help caring about the animals. It's a good primer for the Greens, for caring, for perhaps a future Rainbow Warrior.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations.......2001-06-28

The first thing that drew me to this nonfiction book was the gorgeous illustrations by Cowcher. They are beautiful. Her use of "cool" colors such as blue, purple, green, and gray add to the wonder of this book. If you are a teacher, this would make a great addition to your personal library to use with units on penguins or Antarctica. It also comes in a "big book" format and is worth the money!

One of the important points in Susan Allport's A Natural History of Parenting is made in the subtitle: ... A Naturalist Looks at How Parenting differs [emphasis added] in the Animal World and Ours. Everyone admits that not all adult humans are alike, and anyone with more than one child knows that not all babies are alike. Allport recognizes that not all sheep or puffins are alike, either. Her survey of the variability and stresses of parenting across the animal kingdom proves that seeing biological factors in human behavior doesn't mean seeing only one correct and natural way to raise children.

Book Description

"We humans parent our young longer than any other animal on earth. For us, parenting is such an essential part of reproduction that we tend to think of parenting as an essential part of all reproduction. . . . Most creatures living on the earth today do not bother with such things at all. Beyond producing good-sized eggs and finding, perhaps, a suitable spot to lay them, most animal parents never give their young any kind of care. They never even see their young. And were they to see them, they would be much more inclined to eat them than to offer them food, protection, or guidance."

In A Natural History of Parenting,Susan Allport, a naturalist and science writer, explores the exciting and often startling dynamics of maternal and paternal behavior among the species.

When one of the ewes Allport was raising refused to mother her new lamb, she was forced to reconsider many of her preconceptions about the world of parenting. She  began to explore the roots of parental instincts across the broad spectrum of the animal kingdoms. In A Natural History of Parenting, she examines the awesome diversity of nature to reveal what we share with insects, birds, and other animals, and, just as important, how we differ from them.

Allport's study takes the reader from caves in Texas filled with twenty million bats to huge tanks of beluga whales at the New York Aquarium, from the icy reaches of East Greenland where Arctic wolves raise their young to ant nests where huge labor pools have led to primitive infant care. Along the way, she gathers research on myriad creatures--beavers and wasps, birds and elephants, frogs and humans--to show us a magnificent variety of parental behavior among species, from a male emperor penguin forgoing nourishment to spend weeks protecting an egg balanced on the top of his feet to the manifestations of the human female's "nesting instinct.

Susan Allport is the best kind of science writer--knowledgeable, inquisitive, and entertaining. This invaluable book will ensure that you never again think in the same way of how and why we nurture our young.

"Susan Allport tackles a complex subject head on with penetrating analysis. Her acute observations, introspection, and logical conclusions capture the essence of the whole spectrum of understanding parenting, and make major contributions to the delicate art of rearing children. Allport has given parenting a fresh and exciting direction. The next century will need just such courageous and responsive attention to the underpinnings of the human society. "
--Kenneth A. Chambers, zoologist at the American Museum of Natural History and author of A Country Lover's Guide to Wildlife

What a remarkable book! Ms. Allport has all of her science together and presents it in a way that rivets the reader to the last page. I read this book, pausing to see the conceptual basis for so many of our concepts an actions as parents and as a society, and was sorry it was over.

Book Description

What is it like to live in a tiny polar haven for two months? To paint penguins outdoors in freezing weather? To be flipper-slapped by a bird whose wings are powerful enough to propel it swiftly through frigid waters? To look into the oddly expressive eyes of a penguin chick? With charming watercolors and intriguing journal entries, this book inspires our curiosity. Sophie Webb gives readers a vivid, frank, firsthand account of what it is like to spend a season in a land not yet affected by people, yet populated for centuries by true dwellers of the Antarctic the fearless, round-bellied, pink-footed, gliding, diving, utterly adept Adlie penguins.

Sophie has written a brilliant book for children and adults to learn about the amazing Adelie Penguins of Antarctica. Her illustrations and story are very well done and it will start a long love affair with the southern continent for you and your child, encouraging you to learn more about the Antarctic.

5 out of 5 stars Sophie's well illustrated penguin expedition.......2000-11-29

Sophie Webb has applied her wonderful drawings to a travel log of her trip to the Cape Royds penguin colony on Ross Island, Antactica. Her drawings of the penguins in all their various activities are wonderfully accurate and delightful. She also recounts her experiences traveling to Antactica in a way that makes it very real -- I should know, I was there with her! The book is very well suited to kids as well as adults. However, note that she is quite truthful about some of the various fates that can await less fortunate penguins! Sophie has done a great job with this book.

Book Description

Charly, a penguin from Antarctica, is extremely worried about global warming and climate change. He makes a journey to New York City to confront human beings and their political leaders at the United Nations. Charly claims that the earth has been destroyed by wastefulness, destruction of natural habitats, and climatic calamity and demands that they purchase a new planet.

Along the way, Charly the penguin meets many friends who help him in his quest: twelve-year-old Kwa Marita Né, Jr., who lives in Mquesha, a small village in Ciskei, South Africa; Fipsi the zebra; Builtherself, an artificially created machine that is also a nature-based being; Serendipity the elephant; and Oscar the ostrich. As Charly and his friends fill out all the necessary paperwork and formulate their plan of action, another group is also plotting. Members of the World Bank as well as many HINWIs (high net worth individuals) and U-HINWIs (ultra-high net worth individuals) are deceitfully proposing to purchase a new planet to which they would let the penguins travel once earth has been used up—but their contribution will be the oil and gold of Antarctica.

Will CharlyÂ's desperate pleas be resolved before EarthÂ's resources are exhausted?

5 out of 5 stars A different world is not possible, but a different society.......2007-10-14

The president of the US desrcibed in this novel could very well have been Al Gore who tried his best to listen to the penguin's demands but in the end has to realise that a credible fight for a better world ultimnately requires a different society and alternate economic system. This book as fictional as it may appear is more real than most non-fictional reports we read or listen to in the mainstream media.

5 out of 5 stars Penguin's World.......2007-10-02

This fairy tale like so many others is directed to an adult audience as it lays bare in a playful and humerous way the concept our society is functioning. I highly recommend this marvellously drawn story to anyone who wishes to think beyond....

5 out of 5 stars That's how it really is!.......2007-08-11

Being one of the scientists who know the author from the time he spent with us here in Antarctica, I can only thank him for his good work and the accuracy of the book which he says is a novel...well, to us and the millions of penguins it is damned real. The glaciers are crying icebergs into the ocean and once the ice is gone, some idiots will come and look for oil here as well, we can imagine. It needs some penguins to have the guts to tell the human beings that they fxxxed up the whole planet!

5 out of 5 stars another March of the Penguins is necessary.......2007-08-11

So, Northpole is gone, the polar bears drown as they have to swim ever farer to find food and shelter, farmers in Greenland are growing brocoli in the valleys from where the glaciers have retracted, the climate change is high on the agenda after the nuclear industries have successfully lobbied the EU commission, media is bugging us with frightening news about heat waves and tsunamis, but at the same time, the industrialised nations are opening the race to the Northpole to find more oil now as the ice is gone, to burn it and by this further fuel the climate change. This novel of the sole penguin fighting against the corrupt first world leadership is just right in time to make us think about whose lies we are listening to and why penguins don't like brocoli!

5 out of 5 stars Not so Happy Feet anymore.......2007-02-06

My eyes were opened by Charly, the penguin from Antarctica as he laid bare why the penguin's feet aren't happy anymore. How cynical of us human beings to produce singing and swinging shows of our penguin friends while in reality they are becoming extinct because of us human beings, our profilgacy, our restless destruction of Earth. This novel is far more realistic than anything our political leaders ever have said.

5 out of 5 stars Your Individual Pro In Book Form.......2002-05-04

You can tell this guy is a John Jacobs product -- he sounds just like my pro, of the John Jacobs Golf Schools. One of the many significant things he's taught me is the whole point of this book: "The only difference between you and me Rod is that my bad shots are far better than yours."

Here in one place, in clear words and photos, Haney helps golfers with their bad shots, understanding the cause so that they are minimized as practice and implementation occurs.

His teaching philosophy is solid, and easy to take to the range to fix those bad shots. Also included are good comments on equipment, mind control, course maintenance.

A great addition for golfers who want dramatic improvement by reducing those bad shots. Just to hit it further (although that
is in here too) won't reduce that handicap if the bad shots come out periodically like they do.

Use this book to identify and then attack those parts of the game that cost you shots. This book will provide a big aid wants it's matched with your will to work on it.

4 out of 5 stars No more bads shots.......2001-10-25

This is a good instructional book. It will answer many of the questions a golfer has after a poorly executed swing. It restates much of the same advice in other books, just a little differently to try to get the point accross to the reader. Give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars A Golf Book for Golfers Who Want to Swing like a Pro.......2001-07-04

This is the most intelligent golf book on the swing on the market. Pictures of poor swings contrasted with good swings demonstrate swing flaws that all amateurs can understand and then correct. This book, unlike any other, helped me understand the importance of the position of the right arm and wrist in the swing. That position includes not only the angle created by the forearm and wrist and the right angle created by the forearm and the upperarm but also the angle created by the juncture of the right arm assembly with the shoulder or torso, the angle that is neglected in most discussions of the golf swing. The correct angle is displayed in the swings of pros; notice when you are viewing the professional player from his/her side looking down the fairway that the edge of the forearm points more toward you than away from you; that is, less of the inside of the forearm is visible. The importance of that angle cannot be underestimated. The correct angle keeps the player from hitting a variety of erratic shots, particularly the pull. This book also provides an invaluable discussion on when a player is laying off the club, a fault present in most amateurs. Based on advice in this book, I also changed the postion of the butt of the club at address, moving it more toward the center of my body, and the results were phenomenal: a much higher and straighter shot pattern. As those who love to swing a golf club know, the devils in the details, and this book has some extremely intelligent advice on those details. Buy it, and study what it offers; it will help your game.

5 out of 5 stars O'Meara's Coach Tells How to Fix Your Game.......2001-05-01

Haney's newest book reflects the approach he takes in personal lessons, and the approach his teaching staff at the golf ranch take in working with students. Haney worked with John Jacobs in his early teaching days, and the "analyze and correct your swing based on ball flight" approach is evident here.

The author's aim is not to give you a perfect swing (if such exists) but to enable you to hit better "misses." To that end, the book starts with the beginner's worst misses, tops and fat shots, and works its way through hooks, slices, pulls and pushes. For each shot, Haney helps you to identify the major flaw causing the bad shot. He then takes you through the bad swing, stage by stage, showing what you should look for and where, then how to fix it. The best part of the book is that it teaches the player how to analyze and correct his own game. I enjoyed it, and would recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent NCLEX-RN CD ROM for All Nursing Students.......2005-02-08

I did about 1000 of its 3000 questions as part of my review, and I passed NCLEX-RN easily. I recommend this CD ROM for all nursing students who want to practice in the States.

              5 out of 5 stars Wow...really helped.......2002-09-16

I worked for a couple of months taking tests with this software and just wrote the NCLEX exam and passed easily. The question are very, very similar to what you see in the actually exam. I can't recommend this enough.

              4 out of 5 stars A good study tool...........2001-12-23

I used this software to study for the NCLEX this year and I passed. The questions were written in easy to understand english and included a colored key word that you could click on, giving you a clue as to what the question was asking. I purchased it based on the recommendation of one of my NCLEX review instructors and she was right! I recommend it to all graduate nurses. Good Luck!

For their 50th anniversary, Sports Illustrated collects 52 of their best and most memorable articles. Editor Rob Fleder delivers on what makes the magazine standout and fashionable: a mix of on-sport reporting (Mark Kram's lyrical coverage of the third Ali-Frazier bout) and polished articles written with years of perspective (Dan Jenkins's examination of the 1960 US Open, 18 years after the golf tournament). SI's most well-know scribe, Frank Deford, bookends the collection with reflections on boxer Billy Conn and a lovely obit on hometown star Johnny Untias. There is a sweet array of noted authors including John Steinbeck, William Faulkner, Pete Dexter, Don DeLillo, and Garrison Keillor. Profiles are the bulk of the book, but like the magazine, we take off-beat trails: a rattlesnake derby, articles on broadcasters, and Wallace Stegner's sobering "We Are Destroying Our National Parks" (written in 1955!). Since there has been other SI collections over the years (Yesterday in Sport one of note), fresher articles are more abundant (eight articles from the 21st Century). As with any survey book, one can be picky about the exclusions: no Olympic coverage; the only article on cars deals with the Autobahn; hockey is only represented through an ex-player's murder case. The biggest caveat is a book without pictures from a magazine famous for them. Certainly a single shot of Roger Bannister breaking the four-minute mile or one of the blurry photos that originally accompanied George Plimpton's ultimate April Fools' Day joke (pitching sensation Sidd Finch) would evoke the memory of those who read the articles upon their release. --Doug Thomas
