I have both read the book and seen Coach Snyder on the practice field, and what he tells you about in print, he uses with his own players. In a position where technique can make the player, this book is a must.

Seemingly designed for those with laser-focused attention or plenty of time on their hands, the Facts on File Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins provides days of browsing for etymophiles. More than 9,000 entries, nearly a quarter of them new to this edition, cover slang, idiom, and commonly used words with interesting or curious histories. Ranging from a few sentences to half a page, the entries are consistently entertaining and well-researched, though author Robert Hendrickson acknowledges in his preface that "no good tale is omitted merely because it isn't true." (He does note apocrypha when appropriate.) The book pulls few, if any, punches, and nearly everyone will find at least one term or definition offensive; try "Irish beauty" for "a girl with two black eyes," for example. But, for every potentially offensive term, you'll find several hundred delights, such as "veronica" and "cut off your nose to spite your face." Though there's a slight trend toward Americanisms, there's plenty of British, Irish, and other varieties of English represented herein as well. While it is a terrifically useful reference work, it is nearly impossible to keep one's eyes from wandering, more so than with any other work of its kind. Still, a few extra minutes spent in the company of good words and good stories makes the Facts on File Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins as pleasurable as it is useful. --Rob Lightner

paparazzi: Director Frederico Fellini named a hyperactive photographer in his film La Dolce Vita Signore Paparazzo, after Italian slang for "mosquito". The popularity of Fellini's film led to the widespread use of the term paparazzi for relentless swarms of celebrity-chasing photographers.
Quaaludes: The inventor of Quaaludes named his new drug after a contraction of quiet interludes-which he hoped it would induce.
toady: In the 17th century, conjurer's assistants would eat a toad, causing temporary illness that they would later "heal," thereby demonstrating their "miraculous" powers. The assistants came to be known as "toad-eaters," from which derives our modern insult toady.

The intrigue arises because I cannot pick up this book without getting caught up in something on every page. It's truly fascinating and I'm reading about things that I never even knew I was interested in!

One can't put this book down. Invaluable for settling arguments, and just plain fun and fascinating. I find myself looking up one more, one more, ok, just one more. Have purchased several copies for friends.
Missing many common phrases.......2003-01-13
I got this book based on some of the reviews I read and there are indeed many good entries. But there are so many more missing entries that are far more common than what it is listed.
Some of the entries I have looked for and NOT found:
Tomfoolery
can't have your cake and eat it too
can't see the forest for the trees
dog and pony show
in the doghouse
with bells on
hard-nosed
slowpoke
wisecrack
Or in the case of "high noon" it has an entry but just says that it is not from the movie, it was first recorded in 14th-century England. No further explaination of how or why. In fact many of the entries that are listed don't have that answer. A large percentage of the entries have some form of uncertainty.

"It is unknown how..."
"... may have it's origins in..."
The defintions of some of the phrases are confusing and don't even touch on origin. All I can do it list an entry on this one (NOTE: this is the complete entry):
beg to advise. The much-used phrase beg to advise, so often read in business letters, may be dated but isn't incorrect by any means. Here "advise" doesn't mean "to give advice" but "to give information," information being one of the meanings of advice. This is seen in another common business expression: "We would appreciate the benefit of your advice."
The index is also poor, it seems only to list the people who said the phrases not the actually phrases.
I recommend the Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins it has all of the phrases I couldn't find here. The index is great, it also list the root word of the phrase. So if I want "can't have your cake and eat it too" I could lookup the actual phrase or under "cake" it has a list of the phrases with cake in them.
Keep in mind this book has a lot of words and phrases that one doesn't, and that one has a lot this one doesn't, but that one has more of what you (or at least I) want.
Fine reference but.............2002-08-16
I bought this revision in its "hardcover" format. My first-edition hardcover of this book has a sewn binding, unlike the cheap "glued-in" binding of *this* revision. Geez, if they want to charge such a premium price for a reference work I feel that they should maintain all aspects of quality, including binding quality. Anyhow, the content in this new edition is indeed expanded, and various original entries have been revised and corrected. The book is great for mere reference as well as for browsing.
All the above being said, if this new edition had a *SEWN* binding I'd give it five stars!

Zagat is a MUST for everyone who plans to visit New York.
Reliable reference.......2004-12-02
For the most part ,Zagat does a great job of rating and the reviews are very accurate and reliable. With such a staggering number of choices this guide can be extremely helpful in narrowing down the places on your list before a visit to NY. Listings by type of cuisine and neighborhood make it relatively easy to select a place based on where you will be on any given night. I've eaten many meals in restaurants that I first read about in Zagats and really have found them to be pretty much on the money.
As vital as oxygen for "foodies" .......2004-11-25
Every year after watching the NYC Marathon, my wife and I stroll to one of our favorite upper east side restaurants - Le Refuge. To our great shock, this year it was not open for the late lunch we planned (as it has been for years). I was bummed out. Because food is so expensive in New York, I like to have a solid recommendation from a fellow foodie. My wife suggested that I stop in a book store and check for local eateries in Zagats. They had the new 2005 edition, so I bought it, flipped through the local selections, and found Cafe Edgar (upper west side) for a light, relatively inexpensive lunch with amazing deserts. Here's a rave, the book paid for itself the first time I used it. Bottom line, this is a must-have tool for any New Yorker who eats out on a regular basis. It is written by and for people like you. The reviews are a great jumping off point for additional research - I like comparing Time Out New York reviews against the Zagat short takes. The restaurants are listed in alphabetical order with other cuts by geography, cuisine and more - very useful. Again, with the prices of a NY meal so high, going in a new restaurant blind could result in an expensive, bad meal. And in a city with so many great restaurants, that really is a crime.

Not user friendly, not informative.......2005-10-02
The guide covers only shops selling products, not services.
Ratings are given according to the same method that Zagat uses for restaurants (i.e. shoppers voluntary reports).
The guide is NOT user friendly: shops are organized alphabetically. A terrible choice. They are NOT organized by product or location, so a forniture store in chelsea is followed by a clothing store in the upper westside, followed by an eyewear store in midtown and so on. There is an idex of shops by product and an index of shops by location, but those indexes only have shop names so you cannot get an overview, you have to keep on going back and forth dozens of times. There is an index of indexes (I kid you not) that tell you were the most useful index can be found.
The guide is only minimally informative: each shop description has less than 10 lines on average. Usually, at least 3 are taken by name and address. The remaining 7 lines (on average) might be enough for the topic of the other Zagat guides, but they are in no way sufficient to describe the pletora of diverse shops listed here. E.g. you find out that X is a forniture store, but is it mainly a sofa store? mainly a lamp store? are the sofas tradition? modern? is the selection extensive? is the price range wide? There is no way to know.
The only good thing I can say about this guide is that it gives you the website addresses of the shops, so (if they have it) you can check them out of your own.
I regret the purchase.
Disappointing.......2004-01-19
I had high hopes for this one since I'm a Zagat junky. It's already out of date and there was too much space devoted to chain stores. Little treasures that I know of were left out. I guess that will keep tourists from invading them though.
