      Book Description

      Michael Bamberger has been writing about golf for Golf Digest and The Philadelphia Inquirer for over twenty years, and for the past ten years has been a senior writer for Sports Illustrated. He has also lived the game as few others have -- from his experience as one of the first white, college-educated caddies in 1985, to hanging out with Arnold Palmer at this year's Masters. This Golfing Life brings together Bamberger's acclaimed, intimate profiles of stars such as Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and John Daly, as well as the behind-the scenes people who make the game what it is: In his last round of golf before an amputation, Bamberger's high school golf coach John Sifaneck makes his first hole-in-one; Bob Rubin, a Wall Street master-of-the-universe, builds his own golf course -- one so difficult he can't break 100 on it; Howdy Giles, Arnold Palmer's dentist, has ball markers made from Palmer's old fillings; Bruce Edwards continues to caddie for Tom Watson while dying of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Bamberger interweaves these stories with his own life in a way that will remind golfers why they love the game.

      4 out of 5 stars Yes, THAT Michael Bamberger's next book.......2005-10-25

      Michael Bamberger is the guy whose awesome respect for the integrity of the game forced him, against his better judgment, to abandon his role as a sports reporter and snitch on Michelle Wie at the 2005 Samsung World Championship. On her third round, Wie inadvertently dropped her ball from an unplayable lie one squinchteenth of a percent closer to the 7th hole cup than allowed. Bamberger turned her in -- however, he did so a day AFTER she signed her round 3 scorecard, when the mistake could no longer be rectified. In consequence, the 16-year-old Wie was disqualified from her first tournament as a professional. If you'd like to get inside Bamberger's head and see what makes him tick, by all means read this book instead of removing it and microwaving in a bun, as one fan has suggested.

          5 out of 5 stars College type text book.......2006-08-15

          I recommend this book because it covers all the material for the Private Pilot license in an easy to understand manner. It is full of colored pictures and important concepts in bold print. This is a great book for studying to become a private pilot.

          5 out of 5 stars I used it, now my students do........2006-01-21

          Yes, I know it's pricey. Think of it as an investment. Buy it. End of story.

          4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, execpt 1 thing!.......2005-05-17

          Overall the book was great, it gave me my pilots license but the 1 thing the book didn't do so well on was the weather section. I had trouble understanding the weather theory section so I had to refrence another book so I could learn about the weather. That's it, just the theory, the weather reports and forcast section was good.

          4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2004-07-27

          This was an excellent book. Both the material and presentation was very professional and would be great for both a classroom or independent study for the written exam.

          The only drawback and it was minor was that the coverage of the required FAR's was minimal, but since everyone buying this book should have a copy of the latest FAR/AIM, this should not be too bad.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Preparation For Private Pilots and Students.......2004-06-05

          I am a professional airline pilot, and log virtually all of my time in large, turbojet aircraft. I am also a current CFI, although I don't frequently exercise my Instructor privileges in single engine aircraft. Not long ago I was approached to assist in teaching a Private Pilot ground school and to do some tutoring on the side. I accepted more for the challenge than any other reason.

          The selected text for the course was the "Private Pilot Manual" by Jeppesen Sanderson, and I must say that I was very impressed with the book. It is very complete and provides easy to comprehend explanations (normally with useful diagrams, charts, or photographs) that make learning relatively painless. It was an excellent refresher for me as well, as single engine VFR flying is not what I do on a daily basis anymore. I highly recommend this book to CFI's for their students, to any Private Pilot or Private Pilot candidate, or to any advanced pilot as a refresher of the basics.

          The only complaints I have heard from students are in regard to the relatively high price of the book. My response is that this one book contains the best explanations of the most important concepts needed to pass your written, oral, and practical exams before becoming a Private Pilot, and is an excellent reference to be referred to in the days to come. Flying isn't cheap. Economy is a good thing, but you need to know when to skimp and when to spend. This book is an excellent investment.

          This book does a good job of detailing all the technical details of why an airplane has to work the way it does. It tells the reader about the environment that the aircraft operates in, and explains how interactions with that environment affect the flying characteristics of the machine.

            3 out of 5 stars 9th Edition Tarnished By Factual Errors.......2006-02-13

            Earlier editions of this book had a well deserved reputation for excellence. Kershner is a master of taking the highly technical subject of flying and distilling it into an efficient, enjoyable learning experience.

            Imagine my surprise to find the ninth edition rife with errors! Examples:
            - erroneous definition of Class A airspace;
            - erroneous decoding of wind speed and direction in a sample TAF weather report;
            - erroneous Sigmet description;
            - Weather Depiction Chart doesn't match explanations in the text.

            These are some of the errors that I found and I'm not yet a pilot. The skills required for actually flying an airplane haven't changed much since I purchased my much-thumbed 5th edition 20 yrs ago but airspace regulations and weather reporting have changed considerably- probably not a coincidence that the errors I found are in the newer material. A quick calculation of Kershner's age at the time of the 9th edition publication makes me wonder if he was even involved in creating the updated sections.

            All the content of this book is available for free via a few different downloads off the FAA website. Thus the major reason for buying this book is to cut to the chase on the body of knowledge required to earn a private pilot license because the FAA downloads though well written, cover everything from powered parachutes to jumbo jets. At least the first two of the above errors would cause wrong responses on the private pilot written test causing me to question the value of the $40 I spent on this book though I did just notice that Amazon recently cut the price by a third.

            3 out of 5 stars Better for After Knowledge Test Referance.......2002-03-24

            I purchased his book (an earlier version) on recommendation of my flight instructor when first starting out. If your looking strictly for study material to score high on the written test there is more information than you need. If your looking for a good referance book after the written test then purchase Rod Machado's pilot manual. I use Rod's book now after earning my private license. Whenever I pick it up it either refreshes my knowledge or I am able to learn something new with further depth. Rod's book is well complimented with illustrations and diagrams to help understand the subject matter. If you want a book to use strictly for the knowlege test they are both overkill.

            5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2001-08-17

            Informative, articulate, and carefully edited -- a must have reference for aspiring pilots. Especially impressive is Kershner's ability to avoid the most common pitfalls of writing technical material: the text is tight, complete, succinct, and perhaps most surprisingly, a real treat to read.

            4 out of 5 stars Great Tool.......2000-10-19

            This was a great tool for my flight instruction. Kershner has a way of explaining things that is better than the other books I was able to find. I read this on my own instead of ground school and past my written and practical - so, it worked!

            4 out of 5 stars excellent easy to follow guide........1999-09-27

            I actually read, and used extensively, the 7th edition of this book. Mr. Kershner has a easy to read and follow style that has helped me tremendously on my way to getting certified as a private pilot. Whenever I was having diffuculty learning a particular aspect of flying I referred first to this book and got the straight and skinny on the subject. Mr. Kershner obviously has a grasp on what a student pilot goes through to understand the technical jargon and concepts of flight principals, navigation, cross country flying, flight instuments, and landing an airplane.

            The illstrations are clear and concise. The photographs are very good.

            I highly recommend this book to any student pilot as a supplement to ground school, or anyone interested in what it takes to learn to fly, or anyone who flys in a light plane as a passenger and wants to learn more about what's going on in the cockpit and the pilot's mind.

                      What separates ordinary salespeople from Heavy Hitters?

                      The best salespeople are those "Heavy Hitters" who are able to use human nature, language, and intuition to build trusting relationships with customers and persuade them to buy. Based on his proven and effective sales program, author Steve Martin's Heavy Hitter Selling explains how you too can achieve and maintain that high level of sales success. Using real-world case studies, examples, and exercises, Martin provides the psychological, physical, and language-based tactics you need to turn yourself into a Heavy Hitter.

                      Inside, you'll find proven guidance and expert tips on:

                      "Like other sales books published recently, this one stresses the importance of human behavior. But unlike the others, it puts an emphasis on language. Salespeople could well benefit by exploring scientific models of language. Practical exercises make the book useful for everyone."
                      —Harvard Business School Review

                      "This well-written, insightful book will give you ideas and strategies you can use to influence and persuade customers in any market."
                      —Brian Tracy, author, Million Dollar Habits

                      "Traditional selling focuses on product, price, and competition and misses the most important reason people buy-people and emotion. Heavy Hitter Selling offers a different perspective that is valuable in understanding how to win."
                      —Jay Fulcher, President and COO, Agile Software

                      The book is to the point and direct. Either we belong to the Heavy Hitter Club and have to have a certain mindset, or we don't. It's that simple. I've enjoyed every page of the book.

                      All successful sales people, it seems, are constantly looking at "how to" books to improve what they do. Heavy Hitter Selling takes the "how to" to the next level by analyzing clients and customers and then providing practical ways to deal with lots of personalities. Steve Martin also deals with other practical issue like prioritizing deals and eliminating losers early in the process and providing more time to deal with the winning deals. I found it faciinating and worth a second to pick up what I missed the first time around

                      4 out of 5 stars Heavy Hitter Selling.......2006-09-22

                      This book was interesting and easy to read (for those of you that may be intimidated by the 350 pages). I'll be trying out Mr. Martin's techniques on my upcoming sales calls. If you are in sales this book should give you a refreshing boost and a new way to look at the relationships you are building with your customers and why. Steve is also a great public speaker to have for your upcoming sales training. He tailors his message and works hard to interact directly with as many people as possible.

                      5 out of 5 stars Harvard Business School Review of Heavy Hitter Selling.......2005-04-22

                      Like other marketing and sales books published recently, this one stresses the importance of human behavior. But unlike the others, it puts an emphasis on language.

                      The first section deals with the human nature of communication. It describes different layers of communication, including phonetics, content, purpose, and the way the mind uses and interprets language. "Heavy hitters," or successful salespeople, can structure their dialogue and create personal rapport with customers by borrowing ideas from neurolinguistics, the study of how the brain and the body work in conjunction with language.

                      The second section examines strategies for deciding which customers to target and which actions to take. The third section focuses on the power of persuasion, and touches on a deeper level of the meaning of language: the power of metaphor and language's ability to appeal to emotions rather than logic.

                      Though the author defines salesmanship principally as an art, he believes that art has a scientific element. Salespeople could well benefit by exploring scientific models of language. Practical exercises and a glossary make the book useful for everyone.

                      3 out of 5 stars Almost Credible.......2006-01-07

                      I bought this book to get a different perspective on sales. After 26 years and a over a million miles selling technology and software I thought it was a good idea to rebuild the motor.

                      After receiving the book, I immediately noticed a testimonial printed right on top of the front cover. It was from a "VP" at a large CRM software company. Well, I know this individual having worked with him, not for him, in the past. After seeing this, the book became nearly useless to me because it lost most of it's credibility.

                      However, I was able to forge ahead. The book is full of common sense and re-tooled ancedotal commentary with child-ish graphs and illustrations. Not until you get past the first 2/3's of the book does it begin to sink in that you are in fact not wasting your time. Some good material towards the end, but overall there are much better books and material to read than this.
