The Hamptons, that famous string of beachside hamlets in New York State, are not just a quiet vacation spot for New England blue bloods like the duPonts and Vanderbilts. According to Steven Gaines, the author of a spate of "untold" and "true" biographies of such glitterati as Calvin Klein, they're also--surprise!--a sandbox of scandal.
And who exactly has been stirring things up? Gaines centers the book on an eccentric cast of characters in Hamptons history: semicloseted gay men of fabulous wealth and Ralph Lauren taste, half-cracked Mayflower descendants going to seed, and those "Philistines," the nouveau riche, blemishing the scenery with their terrible taste. "The establishment can hold off the newcomers for only so long," explains the author. "There are always more of Them than Us."
Heavily researched, the book is painstakingly detailed and unapologetically voyeuristic, full of "nine-ounce chilled Baccarat crystal stem glasses," "Chippendale sofas upholstered in Scalamandré silks," "Gucci loafers," and "fourteen-karat-gold wallpaper." It's a Champagne truffle: sinful, enticing, and pure froth at its center. --Maria Dolan

Dated but still fascinating.......2007-05-31
Philistines at the Hedgerow was one of those books that was the read of the summer when first released. It still an interesting read but in the nine years since it was written it has become very out of date. Maybe its time for the author to add some new chapters. If not a whole new book.
Couldn't get into it.......2007-01-25
My husband & I wanted to read this book together. We couldn't get into it. Perhaps if you are more familiar with the Hamptons, all the detail would be interesting to you, but we weren't compelled to continue... We found the writing 'thick' and the story laborious.
Where truth is stranger than fiction.......2006-06-30
An interesting and easy to read book that gives some basic early history on the area and towns known as the Hamptons, a wealthy waterfront area of Long Island in New York state, and profiles a number of notable residents and properties through the years. Initially settled because of it's natural beauty and fertile soil, the area became a haven for the wealthy who flaunt their wealth by trying not to appear that they're flaunting it. And over the years it attracted various groups such as artists, gays, Jews, and the newly-rich of the 80's stock markets, much to the chagrin of earlier residents who viewed such late-comers as outsiders lacking their good taste and refinement (Philistines). Several people are profiled such as artists Jackson Pollock and Alfonso Ossorio (and his partner Ted Dragon); successful businessmen Evan Frankel and Jerry Della Femina, and old-money Robert D. L. Gardiner. But the history is much more than just the people who lived there, it's the properties, too, and many homes and places and the changes that happened are covered.
Many reviews here mention the gossipy feel of the book, and I'll agree with that. But with the nature of the Hamptons and the people it attracts it's probably natural. Some of it becomes downright comic, especially with the legal codes that are really only used by those with a bit of authority to enhance their own social standing or pay back some perceived slight. As it says in the book, in the Hamptons everybody is somebody and each more important than the rest. To call some of the people 'eccentric' is putting it very mildly, though, when 'weird' might be more accurate. But it's all very interesting and hard to put down sometimes, and you can't help but shake your head at some of the ridiculous stories and people. There are a number of good historical photos included, although no maps, which would have been nice for those of us who aren't familiar with the area. And to echo another common sentiment in other reviews, it's a fun summer read.
"BUY EVERYTHING in sight! Hock your gold teeth!".......2006-03-15
"BUY EVERYTHING in sight! Hock your gold teeth!" says Allan Schneider the then "it" realtor of the Hamptons. "Their money is so new, the ink is wet," - speaking about the influx of: master of the universe, corporate raiders, stockbrokers, lawyers, junk bond kings and financiers that were invading the Hamptons at an increasing rate in the 1980's.
Not that the book stays in the 80's. It goes all the way back to the first few settlers and their dealings with the Indians in the mid 1600's. Especially interesting is the history of Gardiner Island and the Gardiner family, who have been the sole inhabitants for generations. Then in comes the Goelet family who came to America in 1676 and later founded Chemical Bank and manages a far reaching real estate empire from an unmarked townhouse on East 67th St. while remaining out of the business spotlight.
Also interesting is the history of The Creeks, a 57 acre estate with 2,000 feet on Georgica Pond (a 290 acre tidal pond) with 6 guest houses that is the largest privately held estate in the Hamptons. It's owned by Ron Perelman, who paid $12.5 million in 1993 from an estate who bought it for $35,000 in 1951. When it was sold in 1894 for $10,500 it was called Sheeps Point and the East Hampton Star called the price, "a large advance from the original cost".
The book gives you a good sense of how real estate in good locations can explode in value while sharing some intrigue regarding the who's who of the Northeast and how they jockey for prominence in the "social register".

Too High Strung.......2005-10-14
Philistines at the Hedgerow traces the roots of fabulosity in New York's most famous vacation spot, providing an insider's, gossip-filled look at the scandals and quirks of the area and its inhabitants. Gaines examines the relationships between property and personality that have developed over the years at the beachfront, from building castles to accumulating mass amounts of acreage where parties can be thrown and paparazzi shots can be taken. Philistines at the Hedgerow provides yet another glimpse into the celebrity backdrop of American life in an area that has radically altered itself over time from simple farmland to idyllic playground.

Too bad the history is lost in Wehrmacht envy.......2007-06-11
Some books have a Jekyll and Hyde nature to them; "The Battle of the Hedgerows: Bradley's First Army in Normandy, June-July 1944" by Leo Daugherty is one such example. While nominally a decently researched and written piece of Second World War military history, a number of issues keep "The Battle of the Hedgerows" from being a book this reviewer would recommend without serious reservation.
So what are the negative issues with this book? First and foremost, Daugherty appears to fall into a large group of modern historical authors (and unfortunately American servicemen) who exhibit considerable "Wehrmacht envy". If you've never heard of this 'syndrome', it's when authors present WWII as events where the German war machine really was far superior in nearly every way to they armies of the Allies and that only by shear overwhelming numbers and resources did the Allies win the war. This is of course a gross oversimplification of the war on all sides. Certainly the German war machine was a professional operation that in the early stages of the war outclassed ALL comers, but by 1944-45, this was no longer true. Daugherty is right to point out that the American forces of the 1st Army spent considerable time learning and re-learning lessons of hedgerow fighting, but to imply that the Americans were tactical buffoons compared to the Germans (this is this reviewers wording not the authors!) is simply not valid. The Germans did not have the market on tactical wit. In the first two chapters (of a total of six total) Daugherty makes a fairly sound, reasoned and balanced case for how the hedgerow battles were prepared for on both sides. But when discussing the combat itself in subsequent chapters (III-V), the authors becomes 'Wehrmacht envious' to say the least. All of the sudden the tough road faced by the American forces had less to do with the terrain and weather and nearly everything to do with the superior tactical prowess of the German defenders. Let's give fair credit to all pieces of the puzzle shall we? The Germans were not without tactical abilities, but the terrain alone of Normandy where the decisive battles of June-July 1944 were fought provided much of the defensive tactics undertaken by the Germans. Little existed in 1944 from a firepower standpoint that could possibly have changed how the battles progressed through the hedgerows, independent of who defended and who attacked. It is fair to say that the 'less tactically savvy (as the author would imply)' Americans could have held up the great Wehrmacht for just as long had the tables been reversed. Terrain and poor weather dictated much of the battle progression not tactical planning per se. To give the Germans great kudos for their ability to slow the Allied advance in the bocage is nothing short of 'Wehrmacht evny'. Comments made on p. 209 give away the author's sympathetic nature to the Wehrmacht: "...Twenty-First Army Group and ...First Army laid the foundation for the Allied victory in Northwest Europe, as they forced the Germans to concede that the Wehrmacht could never hope to match the Allies in terms of men and equipment, despite its superior tactical and operational abilities."
A second issue with the book (and potentially related to the first) is the author's apparent Monty worship. Little is formally said about the British in this book except for several pointed references to 'Field Marshal Montgomery'. So what's the problem? Well, the timeline is the problem. Daugherty's references to all American officers in higher command positions appear to be correct for the time period discussed (e.g., the author rightfully refers to Bradley as Lt. Gen. Bradley in all references, first on p. 9). However, when talking about Monty the author elevates Monty to Field Marshal (first reference on p. 15), a rank to which he was not in reality given until 1 Sept 1944 - a full month after all of the actions discussed in "The Battle of the Hedgerows". Aside from this repeated rank issue, the author seems to invoke Monty only when it is necessary to stress the 'incompetence' of the US First Army (especially when he can't use the vaunted Wehrmacht for such an argument). The author's 'colors' are clear when he attempts to compare (in Chapter VI, pp. 194-195) the way Bradley fought in the bocage country to the 'Broad Front Strategy' and the set piece battles of Monty in the Caen section as a 'Narrow Front Strategy'. The now 60 plus year old argument over which strategic approach represented the best strategy to defeat the Germans in NW Europe - Broad (proposed by SHAEF and supported by Ike, and thus was ultimately the strategy of choice) v Narrow Front (proposed by Monty) - is completely misplaced in this context. Without saying it directly the author implies that had Monty been in tactical control of US First Army that he would have utilized the 'proper' tactics to run through the hedgerows.
Aside from these less than non-biased approaches, the author falls down considerably in his presentation of the combat in Chapters III-V. His introductory (I, II) and summary chapters (VI) are quite good, but his 'shoot 'em up' sections are quite dry and often difficult to read. The information is sound but the presentation is poor and when the author provides analysis of his own it is often tainted (see comments above).
In the end, "The Battles of the Hedgerows" is a 3.5 star effort for pure military content (minus author analysis and commentary) but comes in with the final tally of 2 stars with all its warts taken into consideration. This reviewer is just afraid that not all readers will be able to sufficiently separate reality from jaded commentary.

Great Adventure Book, Really Only Useful for WarMasters, Though.......2007-01-18
This short book provides 4 adventures for various character levels in Weird War II. What's nice about that is you don't have to have high-level characters to start out with it. Also, you can pair up all 4 adventures as one string, or you can instead play them individually by themselves.
There are also some errata to rules provided in the sourcebook and in a couple of other books, so WarMasters should definitely add this to their collection for clarification on certain rules. It is not necessary to add to your collection, though, and as such only stands by itself as an adventure seed. Still, they are well-written and thought out, so they make for a great compendium.
This book is definitely not intended for player characters, though, so unless you are a WM, don't feel the need to buy this, unless you really want to (or really want your WM to provide the group with these stories). For what it is, though, it succeeds nicely. I really wish they had written more of these adventure seeds/campaigns as this one proved to be very well done on all levels.

Customer Reviews:
Absurd.......2006-12-22
This is the worst Mountaineers book I own. The information inside is completely outdated and useless. It concentrates on gear for 3/4 of the book (outdated gear) and gives little useful information. If you are looking for a book on the history of snowshoes, look no further. If you are looking for useful information try elsewhere. I'm usually too lazy to review most books, but this was just that horrible.
Well written.......2006-12-01
This well written book covers snowshoeing in depth (techniques, shoe and binding options, racing, history, and more) and related topics (winter camping, snow shelters, winter clothing, winter safety, winter route finding, and more). An experienced winter camper or snowshoer won't find too much that is new, but will no doubt get some fresh ideas from reading this book. For someone new to snowshoeing and winter camping, the book is recommended.
The first best book, but ..........2005-12-16
Gene Prater was one of the leaders of the "modern" snowshoe movement. He and his brother developed Sherpa Snowshoes, the first aluminum frame, decked snowshoe. Today the market is just full of the offspring of Sherpas. When Gene passed away in 1993, his family passed on the book to Dave Felkley, a Colorado snowshoe instructor and guide. Dave has done a really good job at retaining Gene's original material, and updating it as needed. There is an exceptional chapter on snowshoeing history, which the Praters were such a big part of. It's a bit weak on "traditional" (or as Gene called them, "eastern", calling his own design "western") wood and web snowshoes, but never-the less it is a book that should be on any serious snowshoer or winter camper's shelf.
Great Informational guide.......2000-12-12
This book is a great book for people who are just starting out. Its chaulk full of information to help you get started. i jsut wish that i would have picked up this book earlier.

Course book for students........2005-09-27
This book is an excellent resource for the in-class student. However I do not recommend this book and its contents for the self instructing student. The manual displays signs without definitions and can lead to easy misinterpretation and poor context understanding and usuage. Once again though, it is an excellent book for the class room that builds upon itself gradually and quickly makes communication in ASL possible. I strongly recommend accompanying this instruction manual with a good ASL dictionary.

Good Program.......2004-08-25
As "umd_cyberpunk" says in her review, this book and video are great learning tools *in conjunction with taking a class*.
The film is put together perfectly for its purpose. It is comprised of both instruction of signers facing the camera, as well as conversations signed by actors in various settings.
In the instruction segments, the background is plain and the signers address the viewer directly. Signs are done a bit on the slow side. The lighting is good, and nothing distracts from the signers. Their hands are always framed by the camera, and the shots are still; never mooving nor zooming.
In the conversational segments actors depict signing in every day life. Though the viewer does not have the benefit of the signers directly addressing the camera, the shots are still great. The camera angle, framing and lighting show the conversations clearly.
My only wish for the video would have been for it to be available as a DVD. I found myself pausing and rewinding so many times that it became frustrating, as well as distracting.
The book was overall very good, but its big shortcoming was that it defined the specific words and phrases in the program, and nothing else. Words would come up in class that built on the material of the book, and its tricky to quickly scribble down new words while already going over the book and video material.
I chose to also buy an A.S.L. dictionary : "American Sign Language Dictionary" by Martin L.A. Sternberg (ISBN: 0062736345). I *highly* reccomend buying an ASL dictionary, and this is a good one.
nice starter.......2004-01-03
This is a great starter book. The video is great because you can rewind, rewind and rewind until you have figured out the section. Don't adjust your set, there is no sound. You have to figure the directions out in the lessons- which is a good thing. That is how you pick it up.
Silent Education.......2001-08-07
This was the textbook used for the second section of American Sign Language that I took.
The video did a wonderful job of making this visual language come to life and to make the signs more, "real" for me as a student.
Having a deaf Professor and using this book that did not write an "English translation" next to the vocabulary words created a total immersion into ASL as a language.
There were some problems caused by this, in that after having a very vocabulary intensive section 1, this was difficult to adapt to.
If a professor requires this text, and teaches well, it is very useful. If someone is trying to learn to sign on their own, outside of a college setting, I would advise against purchasing this, as it will cause a lot of confussion.
This is something that needs to be supervised, and therefore, this would be a totally useless book for someone who was not enrolled in a course that coresponded to the lessons in the book.
This book and video tape is very helpful.......1999-09-08
This ASL book and video tape is very helpful to those trying to learn ASL. I have found the tape is at a good pace and is not too fast. I have also enjoyed having the tape in order to review what we did in class. I think you should put the vocabulary names of the pitcure a long with the sign. I recomend this book for those learning ASL.
This combination helps students to learn a lot about ASL........1998-10-31
I personally liked how the videotape complemented the workbook. The workbook can help students learn the alphabet, numbers, thousands of signs, location and emphasis of signs, money, and deaf culture (which I think is a step beyond what most American Sign Language or Signed Exact English books will go). The videotape is for the exercises, which helps students to look for and receive various signs such as time, location, dollars, cents, and fingerspelling. Overall, it's an excellent combination.

ASL 1 and 2.......2007-02-26
I'm at at the college where these authors wrote the book. I actually have Cheri Smith, one of the writers, as my ASL 2 teacher the first half of the semester. She is excellent! This books helps a lot in learning different words. The signers on the video are somewhat fast, but once you get the hang of it...you'll understand it. Also, have the video go SLOW; it'll help you pick the signs better. Overall, everything is excellent...I recommend getting both items and possibly taking this class at BCC.
Worked great (without the video).......2006-06-26
Yah, I had this book for a semester and never used the video once. I think you have to be a retard to not understand this book. It shows how to sign each word as well as phrases very in depth. Awesome book.
No videotape.......2006-06-05
I received the book, but the video did not come with it. The description did not mention this and when I e-mailed Power Ace Books, I did not receive a reply. Just be careful and ask before you buy.
Mostly worthless without video.......2005-12-05
I bought this text to study for an ASL exam, but did not purchase the video. Please let this serve as a warning that if you do not purchase the video, this book is almost worthless. It is intended to go along with the video. A lot of the sellers are only selling the text, so beware.
Since I already knew some sign, this text served as a refresher for my exam, but I wasn't able to get the full use out of it.
No Videotext.......2005-09-13
The Shipping was fast and the book was as advertised but the video text that was supposed to be with it never came.
