5 out of 5 stars Tying lake flies.......2007-06-02

I have been tying trout flies for many years. This year my brother bought a cottage on a lake. His grand kids wanted to know if I could tie them some bass lures. This book is a MUST read if your going to tie bass bugs or pan fish bugs. I must admit I have been up to my neck in dear hair for a week now. I think I'm going with the kids and fish these bugs. Again, if you are tying pan fish bait this is the book to have...

    4 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2006-11-10

I am a novice, but this book is for everyone. I did have to go out and buy a a few things, but who shouldn't. I loved the photos and the narration and there is nothing like cathing a two pound bream or sunfish, whichever you prefer on a three weight fly rod on a fly that I tied! Even better is when a four pound Bass wants to get involved, which is what happened on my last excursion (sorry trout guys!).

5 out of 5 stars Another great book by the master!.......2006-01-20

Skip Morris is by far the best fly tying instruction book writer that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I hope to meet Skip someday out on the water and personaly thank him for making my time at the tying bench more enjoyable and my time on the water more productive.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful and enlightening.......2006-09-25

I learned fly fishing and fly tying using my grandfather's books and gear back in the '70s, so I was already a little behind the times at the very point I started, but I've always enjoyed the sense of connection to past traditions that was inherent then. Somewhere along the way, I fell out of fly fishing for a decade or two, and when I returned, nothing was familiar anymore. Graphite rods, fluorocarbon leaders, tying materials I'd never heard of, reels that look (and cost) like alloy rims from a Ferrari . . . the disconnect was amazing, not only from the familiar but seemingly from the history as well. I retreated to my grandfather's bamboo rod and silk line spooled on an old Heddon Imperial or pre-war Pflueger Medalist.

This book is a wonderful antidote. If you've ever pondered how a fly might have been tied and evolved from the fifteenth through nineteenth centuries, about the materials that went into line and leader, about wooden rods and antique fish hooks, if you've ever actually wanted to try making any of these items yourself and fishing with them, then you'll love this book. I often enjoy trying things "the old way" even if I don't intend to make it my constant practice. It's important with history, though, not to get stuck there, and this book is not just a throw-back, as Martin ties the past in with the present, letting the experiences of history inform his personal modern fly patterns. His well researched explorations of ancient angling literature is pulling me backward several hundred years from the mid-twentieth century, and helping me a bit to deal with the twenty-first. (And, oddly enough, makes my silk line and cane rod seem so modern! I never knew just how much history had gone before.)

I'm sure it's a significant percentage of fly fishers that tie their own flies. For those fly fishers with a strong sense of history and tradition that enjoy using their hands to craft their own tools to pursue their sport and wish to take it further and down an antique road, and even for those interested in the history of fly fishing with no intent to make anything at all, this book will prove eye-opening. I'm only part-way through my copy now, but I know this volume will take its place on my bookshelf next to books by Izaak Walton, Ray Bergman, Joe Bates, William Blades, Milford "Stanley" Poltroon, and the others I've valued over the years. I'm equally sure I'm going to try my hand at bending and tempering some of my own fish hooks before long, as well. Maybe I'll even build a wooden loop rod or a furled horsehair line. Darrel Martin put a lot of care into creating this book, and he gets my thanks.

The lay out of this book is great. The chapters are broken down to demonstrate the different ways to tie different portions of the fly. For example, the different methods for tying on the hackle are given as well as different wing styles. The pictures help to clarify what each step entails. I find myself going back to this book numerous times and it is one of the most used books on my shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Fly Tying Cookbook.......2000-10-03

This book is great to see step by step how to tie flies. The pictures are well done. It is easy to see what is going on at each step. You can even determine lengths of materials from measuring against hook length. The book leaves very little to guessing. What you guess is really more of a show of creativity and style.

            Book Description

            Introduction

Nobody knows exactly when the first artificial fly was tied, although the art is most commonly believed to have originated in ancient Greece. The one certain thing, however, is that its major evolution began only in this century, perhaps even in the past few decades.

The art and science behind the fly patterns of today come largely from the contributions of such great American fly tiers as Lee Wulff, Harry Darbee, Ernest Schwiebert, Charles K. Fox, Vince Marinaro, Art Flick, Poul Jorgensen, Doug Swisher and Carl Richards, to name only a few. Thus it was in the United States that many of the best-known creations of our time were developed. Among the many innovative and nontraditional dressings to emerge were streamers, hairwing dry flies, bass bugs, realistic nymphs, thorax flies and no-hackle flies.

Increasing fishing pressure and the inevitable education of fish have contributed to the development of a new school of thought in fly tying. Attractor patterns succeeded in fooling naive fish in the time of our grandfathers, but today, more and more realistic imitations have emerged in response to these "educated," or selective, fish.

The spirit of research has always been present among expert fly tiers, but now there is a growing -- in fact, mushrooming-grass-roots interest in learning the basic techniques. It is to assist the many beginners that we decided to put this book together and offer a work that attempts to address all aspects of the fascinating art of fly tying.

            WHY TIE YOUR OWN FLIES?

A beginner's answer to this question might be that it is less expensive to tie flies than to buy them, but the apparent logic of that response will inevitably be questioned as he or she advances in the art. It's true that a fly you tie yourself is far less expensive than one you purchase, but it is easy to get carried away in the pleasure of fly tying, and you may discover after a few seasons that you have many times more flies than you'll ever need and certainly far more than you would have bought. So although you don't really save money, you will end up with far more flies for the money you do spend, and you'll find a great deal more enjoyment in using them.

Imagine a beautiful, calm evening on your favorite lake. The trout are jumping everywhere, yet despite your expert selection of flies, you fail to attract even one half-hearted rise. You study the surface carefully and notice countless brownish gray insects barely a quarter of an inch long apparently imprisoned in the surface film. The trout lovethem. Even in the forgotten comers of your fly vest, you can find no reasonable imitation.

If you're not a fly tier, you'll likely haunt your local fly shops the following week, vainly searching for a fly that looks just like those insects. But if you tie your own flies, you'll be ready the very next evening to offer the trout exactly what they are feeding on. And when you bring one of those selectively feeding trout to hand, you will, with good reason, get twice the satisfaction.

5 out of 5 stars One of best books for those starting to tie........1996-05-18

Pictures are great, in color, and almost a blind man(or woman) can see them, read the instructions and understand. Instructions are fairly straight forward, and progression of flies tied or techniques is logical. Is a great instruction manual for those starting out. Companion text on tying nymphs also a worthwhile read. Other books that are very similar are the Kaufmann books

3 out of 5 stars Not the Greatest.......2007-04-28

"How English Works" is an ok exercise and grammar book, though not without some points that are problematic.

The explanations for different grammar points and structures are well written and fairly easy to grasp for the most part. The book covers a large range of grammar points, and this is definitely something in favour of it. However, so do other books of a similar type.

The exercises are very limited, giving only a small amount of practice for each structure and form. In some cases, a lot was sacrificed for the sake of some excellent presentation, such as full colour pictures and so on. This lack of depth in the exercises means that students may have to supplement this book with another.

Overall, the "How English Works" is not a bad book, but I think there are better out there. This book would be good as a supplement to other books, or perhaps for a reference for students. However, I would not recommend it above all others.

              5 out of 5 stars i love it :).......2006-07-02

I love this book, it's really easy to use and read. I think it covers all you can imagine about English and it has a lot of exercises. I recommend this book for beginners and intermediate level. It can also be very useful for somebody that want to reinforce his/her English level.

5 out of 5 stars What a practice book must be!.......2003-01-09

I am very glad to see that this book is rated 5 stars here in amazon.com, for my opinion is that such book is a most perfect one for purposes of grammar practice of the English language.
What really should be noticed is that, usually, the more advanced the book is, the more tiring it is for the student to read; but the previous logic does not apply to this one! I feel a great pleasure in reading it and doing its exercises mainly because of one very important caracteristic that every didatic book should embody: the abundance of visual elements, especially the little comic strips and the numerous strong sayings uttered by various famous people, which are spread profusely throughout the book. Its visually rich and coloured pages shall, most certainly, banish the usual boredom that students feel in studying grammar, and please, future reader, do not worry; the contents of the book are also very rich, and I may assure any purchaser in potential that this book doesn't lack any important information; it is a thorough coverage for students who wish to get more fluent in written and spoken language alike.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, Simple and Readable!.......2001-05-12

I easily get bored when i read english grammar books, but with this book grammar become more enjoying and easy to understand. Before going through grammar lessons you can test your grammar by questions and know your weak points. You can use it as starter book for english grammar and as reference. It is very clear, simple, readable and contains some colorful cartoons. With each topic there is tasks and excercises. I highly recommend it for intermediate students.

A very clear book. It's great at explaination, short on excercises- but it does have an answer key. Too few excercises for a text, but a great refrence for teachers and ESL students.

                  Book Description

The second edition of the Rough Guide to Argentina explores the country in its entirety, from cosmopolitan Buenos Aires to the spectacular Rio de la Plata and Iguazu Falls in the north and remote Ushaia in the far south. The Rough Guide also includes areas often visited on short trips from Argentina - Tierra del Fuego, Chilean Patagonia and Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay. The Rough Guide includes a 24-page full-colour introduction to the country''s highlights, hand-picked by the authors. As well as all the first-hand reviews of the best places to stay, eat, drink and party in every town and province, there is detailed advice on the many outdoor activities available - from horseback treks to white-water rafting to heli-skiing. Throughout the guide there are also insightful boxes on Argentinian culture, including the birth of tango, the rise of Peron and the religion of football.

5 out of 5 stars My first Rough Guide.......2007-08-08

                  Three things:
                  1. I have not yet been to Argentina so I have not verified my conclusion.
                  2. I have not seen other Argentina guide books.
                  3. I have a shelf full of other guide books for other countries and this is quite simply the best and most comprehensive travel guide I have ever seen. In the future I will consider Rough Guides first above all others, then evaluate.

3 out of 5 stars Better than some, but not for the student traveler.......2007-06-22

I liked this better than the Frommer's guides, but I think the Lonely Planet guide does a better job. As a traveler on a student's budget, I didn't find this particular guide to be that useful or user-friendly. It IS informative and can be useful (language section, brief culture/history section, health section, etc.) but as I said, it wasn't right for me.

I suggest the Lonely Planet guide to Argentina.

                  4 out of 5 stars book.......2007-01-22

book arrived much earlier than other I'd ordered at same time, great condition, but extra box packaging is not necessary. Books like that only need padded envelopes.

                  5 out of 5 stars good reviews.......2006-11-19

I agree with pretty much with what has been said in the reviews below. The Rough Guide is a better value from the Lonely Planet, if nothing else for the additional number of pages (a third) that allow the authors to get into more detail on the history, politics and minutiae of places to stay and see.

There are a few problems or personal recommendations I would make, or emphasize. The Guide is absolutely on target by recommending not to bring travellers checks. Not only are the banks loth to take them (only a minority actually do, the maximum is $100 per day) but there is an extraordinary amount of paperwork and they charge enormous fees. I brought most of the checks back home. There is a problem with Argentinian ATMs not listed in the Guide. Most ATMs use a 4 letter code and do not recognize 4+ codes from the USA or European debit/credit cards. You will quickly recognize and love the small minority that do (such as the Columbia Bank).

The maps were very helpful to me.

Some of the places described in the book were apparently never visited by the Guide's researchers, who must have relied on second-hand info from tour operators or Information agencies. A case in point is the Baritu National Park and its launching pad, the village Los Toldos, which are described from a standpoint of someone who has never been there.

In general, I would say that the country is best experienced if one avoids organized tours. Argentines are a warm, interesting and interested people. It is one thing to sit in the bus with a bunch of Europeans and gringos and another to sit together with the locals... indigenous ladies returning from the market, old men in old hats, groups of seductive young women... you will see more of the land and experience more of the people. If you visit Iruya (which I thoroughly recommend), don't just stay for a couple of hours before returning to Humahuaca; i suggest renting a room in the village (for ridiculously low proces) and staying for a couple of days.

There is very little about other countries and potential issues involved in crossing the borders. This goes for Brasil, Bolivia and Chile.

Still, this is the guide to get. Enjoy the travels.

5 out of 5 stars Best Argentina Country Guide.......2006-11-11

The Rough Guide to Argentina (2nd edition published in January of 2005) is the best guide available for the entire country. I phrased it this way because Time Out Buenos Aires (published July 2006) is by far and away the best guide for the city of Buenos Aires.

If you are a little leery of purchasing a guidebook printed almost two years ago I would recommend purchasing Time Out Buenos Aires as well because it seemed that only in Buenos Aires have things changed so rapidly that a newer guide would be necessary.
Having said that you certainly can get away with just having The Rough Guide (just know that prices have gone up - which happens with all guide books).

When comparing The Rough Guide to Argentina to Lonely Planet Argentina (the only real competition since Fodors, Frommers, and Bradt just don't compete) I can easily recommend Rough guide over Lonely Planet. The Rough Guide simply has more information (it has 372 MORE pages than Lonely Planet has). A few times I found that I'd read about a very intriguing and little known attraction in the Rough Guide only to find it missing altogether in Lonely Planet. I know that most guides are striving to also highlight the off the beaten track activities as well as the major ones and The Rough Guide achieves this in a much better way than Lonely Planet.

I don't fault Lonely Planet for this because they produce good travel guides (especially in Europe), but it seems that they made the decision to not go as in depth as The Rough Guide has in South America (since I also found the same to be true with the Chile and Peru guides).

The maps are very easy to use and more intuitive than Lonely Planet's, but it would be nice for Rough Guide to copy LP in printing the elevation and population of cities and towns.

All areas of the country are represented well in the guide. Some are a bit more heavily detailed but it does not come at the expense of others.

The "Basics" section is very detailed in highlighting entry requirements, transportation, health and safety issues, etc. There is also a lengthy discussion on the history of Argentina, it's peoples, culture, political system, food, etc.

You will definitely not be disappointed after purchasing this guidebook.

3 out of 5 stars The best in English.......2007-04-19

We are traveling to the Patagonian lakes region next week. I ordered four Argentina/Patagonia maps to compare them: ITM's Patagonia, Rutas de la Argentina, Rough Guide Map Argentina, and Map Guide Patagonia. I ended up keeping the Rutas de la Argentina and returning the others. This was the best English map of the lot. I found the road designations to be overly thick and difficult to distinguish. If you can handle the Spanish, Rutas is better.

This reads very well, but the real test will come next month when I am actually using it in Argentina. Lots of good suggestions, hope they are realistic!

5 out of 5 stars The right way to make a map........2004-04-03

I drove through various counties in South America. Before leaving on this 16,000K trip I sought out the best maps. In comparison to other maps, this map of Argentina is a must have.

I was trained by two gorillas with Tourette Syndrome on how to re-fold maps. My maps always look pristine on the first day, by the time I have arrived at my final destination the maps are beyond redemption, often consisting of segments and various pieces. This map holds up! The Rough Guide Maps are "Rip-Proof" & Waterproof because they are printed on a high grade sheet of plastic (kudos). Because of the plastic fabric it is easier to fold than paper maps.

The roads (expressway, highway, secondary and other) are cleanly printed and in sharp detail making reading this map a breeze. The coloring and shading used allows for a good decimation of physical features, such as mountain ranges, valleys and peaks (Altitude noted). What is lacking is that the map is without any inset maps of major cities. This is a short coming but all-in-all this is an excellent road map of Argentina. Highly recommended. 4.5 Stars.

                      Book Description

Argentina is synonymous with its global music export, the tango. Born as an expression of the country's working classes in the brothels and bars of late nineteenth century Buenos Aires, this sensual and highly popular dance swept the world. However, the tango is just one of Argentina's vast musical treasures explored on this album. Over the years, Spanish stringed instruments and African rhythms have been incorporated into the array of indigenous styles, adding to the country's diverse musical outpourings. The Rough Guide To The Music Of Argentina explores this rich musical region, home to countless Andean folk styles, travelling through tango, milonga, chacarera and chamamé.
