Great Book.......2003-11-13

An excellent Denali guide if you're thinking about several route choices to research.

Very good but only in imperial units.......2003-11-05

This book is definitely very good, with lot of useful information necessary for any expedition to Denali. It gives very good overview of all routes and potential hazards. Problem I have is that all of the numeric information is in imperial units ONLY. I understand that Alaska is part of US (since it is both from Russia in 1867) where the imperial system is predominant (but not official since Dec. 25th 1975 by "Metric Conversion Act"). It is true that most of the English speaking counties are familiar with imperial units, but it is true that English is mostly spread second language on the planet.
Denali is mountain that is climbed by mountaineers from all over the world, and I think that all of them could get better advantage of this book if the SI units are at least specified as secondary units. For now have you calculator ready and do conversion yourself.

This is one of only two books I would trust for reliable information about the West Buttress route of Denali. Very informative and practical!

Simple and to the point.......2002-02-09

This book was easy to read and provides a great historical overview of the mountain, what equipment you need and a detailed step by step guide to the West Buttress route with Maps from Brad Washburn. Although I would say this book is merely a warm up in the research you need to do and understand to climb Denali. A very practical guide.

Excellent and comprehensive on important details.......2002-09-26

As always, Molvar gives us an in-depth look at what we need to know: the weather, the terrain, the animals and their normal habitats, reading from maps, packing supplies, essentials on clothing, what foods on the trail to avoid and what to watch for, how to interpret the forests, etc. There is very little in the book that a backpacker or angler would not find pertinent to his visit to Alaska. The writing flows smoothly and evenly, and no part gets greater treatment than the rest. I recommend this as a useful manual to hikers and campers ready to visit Alaska, both novice and veteran. Molvar's firsthand experience shows on every page.

Great First Book on Hiking Alaska.......2001-03-19

This book gives a brief overview of the various regions in Alaska to consider, but focuses more on providing knowledge needed to backpack successfully in the state. The chapters on techniques (including river crossing, snowfield travel, and glacial travel) and wildlife are particularly useful. There is also a chapter on navigating via compass and map, which is helpful since there are very few trails in Alaska. This is a good first read for someone planning their initial backpacking expedition in the nation's largest state. For the more advanced Alaskan, it probably would not be too helpful.

Very good.......2006-09-06

The book is very good. The history of the mountain makes it simple to write something interesting, but certainly Mr. Beckey has done an excellent and very comprehensive work, and he deserves the credit. The reading is fine too. I only missed some more detailed sketches of the routes, and at times I got a bit lost in the succession of climbing expeditions (though it is true that the book has a chronology at the end).

Also some of the final chapters perhaps do not belong in this book, but all in all I certainly recommend it.

An essential climbing book by a legendary climber.......2000-01-25

Commenting on a Fred Beckey climbing book is a little like critiquing a Mozart opera: who among us, really, has any standing to question him? It's remarkable that the man combines such complete mastery of two crafts, both climbing and writing. Compared to Reinhold Messner, another heroic climber and author, Beckey's writing is much better, more insightful, and ultimately far more useful. The book begins with a forward by Heinrich Harrer, famous for the first climb of the north face of the Eiger, as well as his books "The White Spider" and "Seven Years in Tibet." Much of the book is a history, detailing the early explorations and attempts, including Cook, the sourdough expedition, and the Reverend Stuck's successful climb, on through the pioneering climbs of other routes on the mountain. This is one more book that demonstrates that, in his areas of experience, Fred Beckey is unsurpassed. He is a climber's climber (not least because of his legendary guidebooks) and this is a climber's book on Denali. It's extensively footnoted and makes good use of historical photos, which is a nice professional touch, but the real value of the book is Beckey's total knowledge of climbing and of the mountain. One of the chapters details his participation on the first climb of the NW buttress (the first ascent of the Wickersham Wall) as well as his subsequent first ascent, with Harrer, of nearby Mt. Hunter. It's hard to imagine undertaking a climb of Denali without reading this book first; the last section includes complete route descriptions of the four most-climbed routes on the mountain, an extensive record of accidents and disasters, including analysis of what went wrong, and a chapter on logistics and equipment. Some things have changed; Talkitna is already more built-up than it was in '93 when the book was published (with a soberingly well-used cemetary) and the standard routes are more crowded than ever, but the same accidents happen for the same reasons. If everyone who attempted the mountain read this book, it would be a safer place.

Can You Say A Few Words?.......2001-03-29

This book is well written (in easy-to-use segments) and it's loaded with really practical information. You'll get great advice that's truly useful - whether you have to speak at a meeting, present an award, give a eulogy, make a wedding toast, whatever. In particular, the section on 'handling tough questions' is worth its weight in gold (it's perfect for anyone facing a job interview!).

Also, the book has a huge section on 'overcoming nervousness'. I've never seen such helpful information in any other public speaking book.

It's not that bad..........2006-08-15

I'm a fan of the original Teen Titans comic books, and every now and then I watch the TV series. I, along with most people, thought this was just going to be stupid and pointless. But when my friend told me it had an FLCL reference in it, there was no reason I couldn't pick it up.

This was made for fans of the TV show, NOT for the comic book fans. I didn't love it, I thought it was okay. Then aghain, considering that I was comparing it to the original comic the entire read , it really wasn't a fair fight. If you're trying to force you're child/ younger relative into comic books, this is probably the best thing you could give them.

I thought it was a rather enjoyable read. the Out Of Character-ness got a bit irratating, but I'm a fan-fiction reader, so OOC's is nothing new to me. If the FLCL reference in chapter 5 isn't enough to convince a fan of the show to read this, the pleasing artwork and the child-friendly storylines should be.

Not the cartoon, but 2 stars?.......2005-12-25

I read a few of the reivews here, but mostly I just saw complaints like art styles off, titans out of character etc.
I checked it out and I was actually suprised. In a good way.

Now, don't check this out for an action pumped, well thought out, continuing plots full of danger and mayham. The comic is just humor and nothing more (ok, with a touch of action here and there), and wiether your turned off by the cheezy humor *knock knock jokes, lame puns* or the different sets of art styles *sometimes looked real off* or something like that, I still recomend a look at the least. The plots arn't meant to be the best and the jokes may not be to great, but the artwork looks great, the dialog fits well, and even though they arn't the best, the plots still intertained me.

Names of chapters and plots below:

The books split of five storys, none having anything in common with the last or next.
First chapter: Demo.
The Hive students Gizmo, Jinx and Mamoth take on the titans, in a way that is.

Second chapter: The Beast Boy Who Cried Wolf.
The title pretty much says it all. After all his pranks, who's going to believe him when trouble really hits?

Third chapter: Lame.
Cyborg is a great hero, but he doesn't think so after hearing some comments made by certain civilians and seems real down in the dumps by it. What will it take for him to get back to his old self?

Fourth chapter: My Crummy Valentine.
Starfire is curious about this holiday and in turn Cyborg and Beast Boy get Robin to take her out. What could be a great night out is spoild by the Puppet King.

Fifth chapter: Monster Zit.
Ravin gets a zit and the Titans try everything they can to help, though it turns out to be more of a problem....(Personally my least favorite)

I would have givin it a lower score due to some small things like the character personality tweaks here and there and...well, aside from some off art styles, and Robin being addressed from time to time as "Robie", thats the only thing that bugged me, but then again it didn't bother me to much.
The storys and art made me smile, so 5 out of 5.

Not The Teen Titans!.......2005-08-06

If you read this comic book, you will notice that, oh My GOSH! This is sooo not the teen Titans! Raven looks like a gray and purple swim suit modle, and is as sarcastic. Starfire looks a whole lot diffrent, and she leaves a tail of orange, from her hair, as she flies. Cyborg never says , "Boo-Yah!" in these books and is a Major in the Serious army (there is no serious army, that is a figure of speech!, acts a little like Robin in the show, and only plays video games once, and that is when all the boys are playing. Beastboy, is a little more stupid than he should be, and keeps acting like "The Boy Who Cried Wolf".Robin is very playful, and is not absessed with finding Slade. Not a very good comic! It was not based on the original Teen titans book, but if you read the original book, called "The New Teen Titans", you'll know this is the good Teen Titans! Still very bad, though...

Rip Off Of A Good Series.......2005-02-11

Teen Titans is my favorite show. It is deep, romantic, action-packed, and funny. However, everything that I enjoy about the show is taken out of the comic book (not manga). The art work is terrible, the plots are pointless, and the story lines are boring. It's more like a bad internet dojinshi (fans comic in Japanese). I recommed the show, but not this comic book.

i like this sieries.......2004-11-30

i have not read the mangas, but i have seen the show so mabey the manga is different but here is my review: while the characters are a bit stereotypic and its aimed at younger kids (with very pronounced lessons hehe)it is a nice siereis that i enjoy. the characters accutally have backround information and arn't phony superheroes.
