Book Description

Noodle is a little dog who's very long from front to back and very short from top to bottom, which makes it hard for him to dig for bones. One day Noodle finds a wishbone, and the dog fairy arrives with a flip-flap of wings to grant him a wish: "What size and shape do you want to be?" Noodle asks all the animals at the zoo what he should wish for, only to discover he might just be perfect -- exactly the way he is. Originally published in 1937 by children's book greats Ludwig Bemelmans and Munro Leaf, NOODLE is a classic with a quiet wisdom that continues to hold true today.

I have a good friend in Vero Beach who owns a dachshund named Noodle. His birthday is next month and I bought the book as a gift for him and his "momma". It was a very sweet and compassionate book and I'm sure both my friend and Noodle will be as delighted with it as I was. Thanks for making it available.

I have called my sister's dachshund Noodle, instead of her real name Nola, forever. So now that sister is having a baby, and requested a library of baby books, what could have been more perfect????????
As a bonus, the reviews about the content have been wonderful.

Yes, a perfect book....with or without a connection to a real Noodle.

I gave several books for a 6-year-old on his birthday. This was his favorite.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST Children's books ever!!!.......2005-08-16

This book was originally published by Munro Leaf in 1937 and has been out of print for a VERY LONG time. This book has a great appeal to children because it is about animals and celebrates their many different traits. It also teaches the moral that everyone is unique and special in his or her own way, and that one should be proud of who they are. It is a story of a dachshund, Noodle, who gets one wish from a dog fairy. Noodle decides he wants to be a new size and shape, since being a dachshund he has short legs and a long body. The story is Noodle's quest to find out the best size and shape, and along the way he meets many zoo animals who all have different opinions. In the end Noodle realizes exactly what size and shape is best for him. This story was my mother's favorite book as a child, and my brother and I grew up reading this story with our pet dachshund. This book has been well-loved, and I am excited that it is back in print for children to love and cherish today.

Book Description

Magic surrounds us. It is the stuff of creation. The Enlightenment did not kill it with science, nor did the industrial revolution extinguish its usefulness with mechanation. And whether mankind is aware of it or not, this timeless power continues to have a hand in the fate of mortals.

There exists in this world, things that logic and reason cannot explain, and there are beings that have never been captured or catalogued. Elves may feel cramped in the big city, but they can get by. As the wild lands disappear, werewolves may have to be a bit more careful, but they still find time to hunt. And devils and demons still prey upon the souls of the wicked and the unwary.

Come, explore this world of mystery, wonder, danger, and horror. You may find it to be not unlike the world in which you live.

If you love "horror" short stories that make little sense and dump you right into a story, this is your book. Personally i though it was alright, though only a few of the stories were top notch. If you like to collect magic or horror books etc. then but this/.

As one of the authors in this collection, I abstain from commenting on what I think of the works in this collection because I don't want to be immediately seen as a worthlessly biased opinion.

I *will* say, however, that William Horner has obviously worked very hard to put together what looks like a great collection of even, solid work in horror/dark fantasy. The illustrations for the stories look good, the overall publication of the pieces are excellent, and I think it's a worthy read right alongside any significant year's collection of this genre's best.

5 out of 5 stars Anthologies by William Horner are great to read!.......2006-04-28

As a long time reader of Horner's excellent collections of fantasy and dark fantasy, I'm excited about this new release! I am an author in it, so that makes it even better. I was able to check out the early drafts of this book last summer. The talent is amazing and the art is wonderful. Support William Horner's crusade to develop new talent in fantasy fiction! 4 out of 5 stars Great Selection.......2006-11-09

Throughly enjoyed the selection of sailing stories. In fact one story(of a novice sailor taking his family for a sailing holiday) was so good I read to my wife and then had my daughter read to the family over dinner one night and we all laughed and reflected how real(and sometimes close to home) the experience was.
Amazing range of stories and hardly a dude amoungst them. Many very poignant, like the family on an ocean crossing experience who sailed into an island harbour against better practice and judgement and it cost them there yacht. The range from Americas cup to day sailors and solo
yachtwoman is wide , but it works. An easy read. Thank you. New Zealand day sailor

3 out of 5 stars An "ok" read.......2006-08-10

I'm still trying to muddle through this book of stories. I find some to be quite mudane & not the least bit exciting. I was expecting more.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Collection of Sailing Stories.......2006-07-16

The author David Gowdey presents a 282 page collection of 25 sailing stories, weather guides, interviews, and poems - all of interest to sailors or people wishing to read about sailing. The stories are not really related to one another and as such this is not a compendium of stories that teach you how to sail or to be a better sailor. Rather it is a loose collection of interesting short stories and interviews about the sea and sailing divided into three sections, which covers general sailing, ocean trips, and some stories about racing. It covers small boats to large ocean racers, preparing for trips, crew psychology, cooking, weather, the appeal of the sea, poems, etc. He acts as an "editor" and writes a short four page introduction and injects a one page map of the world showing some of the routes outlined in the sailing stories. There are neither an index or a bibliography for further readings. As such the book merits just 2-3 stars for effort in my opinion, but in fact is closer to 5 stars in terms of reading enjoyment. All the stories can be found elsewhere but the author puts them into one book - and for that reason the book is popular and a good read.

For the most part it is an interesting read and vary varied. Each story is different and the writing is in general excellent. He has the story of "Lipton's Last Challenge" of the America's Cup by his boat Shamrock in 1930, the story of the Bluenose, interviews with Ted Turner and Dennis Connor, comments by a competitor of Dennis Connor - that is actually much more telling and positive about Connor than his interviews, preparing for an ocean crossing, Clare Francis crossing the north Atlantic alone, a story called "Cousteau: The Poet" - which gives many insights about the man, a short story by Robert Louis Stevenson, and one story about the loss of a boat, plus many more.

An excellent short book that I would recommend to sailors or simply people wanting to read about sailing. I wish it had a bibliography, an index, and I found it too short. Having said that, the book does inspire the reader to find more similar stories.

              4 out of 5 stars Sail Away.......2003-01-13

This is a good book. Lots of differing points of view. Good yarns. Perfect for picking up while on a watch and putting down when you get tired.

3 out of 5 stars I have read better sailing books.......1999-10-30

I love books about the sea and sailing. 'Before the Wind' has been a slow and difficult read for me. It's as good as each short story.

I have found more enjoyment in Kinder's 'Ship of Gold', Hemmingeay-Douglas' 'Cape Horn', and Alvah Simon's 'North to the Night'.

When the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary put out a call during the late 19th century pleading for "men of letters" to provide help with their mammoth undertaking, hundreds of responses came forth. Some helpers, like Dr. W.C. Minor, provided literally thousands of entries to the editors. But Minor, an American expatriate in England and a Civil War veteran, was actually a certified lunatic who turned in his dictionary entries from the Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. Simon Winchester has produced a mesmerizing coda to the deeply troubled Minor's life, a life that in one sense began with the senseless murder of an innocent British brewery worker that the deluded Minor believed was an assassin sent by one of his numerous "enemies."

Winchester also paints a rich portrait of the OED's leading light, Professor James Murray, who spent more than 40 years of his life on a project he would not see completed in his lifetime. Winchester traces the origins of the drive to create a "Big Dictionary" down through Murray and far back into the past; the result is a fascinating compact history of the English language (albeit admittedly more interesting to linguistics enthusiasts than historians or true crime buffs). That Murray and Minor, whose lives took such wildly disparate turns yet were united in their fierce love of language, were able to view one another as peers and foster a warm friendship is just one of the delicately turned subplots of this compelling book. --Tjames Madison

                Amazon.com Audiobook Review

The compilation of the Oxford English Dictionary, 70 years in the making, was an intellectually heroic feat with a twist worthy of the greatest mystery fiction: one of its most valuable contributors was a criminally insane American physician, locked up in an English asylum for murder. British stage actor Simon Jones leads us through this uncommon meeting of minds (the other belonging to self-educated dictionary editor James Murray) at full gallop. Ultimately, it's hard to say which is more remarkable: the facts of this amazingly well-researched story, or the sound of author Simon Winchester's erudite prose. Jones's reading smoothly transports listeners to the 19th century, reminding us why so many brilliant people obsessively set out to catalogue the English language. This unabridged version contains an interview between Winchester and John Simpson, editor of the Oxford dictionary. (Running time: 6.5 hours, 6 cassettes) --Lou Schuler

                Book Description

The Professor and the Madman, masterfully researched and eloquently written, is an extraordinary tale of madness, genius, and the incredible obsessions of two remarkable men that led to the making of the Oxford English Dictionary -- and literary history. The compilation of the OED began in 1857, it was one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken. As definitions were collected, the overseeing committee, led by Professor James Murray, discovered that one man, Dr. W. C. Minor, had submitted more than ten thousand. When the committee insisted on honoring him, a shocking truth came to light: Dr. Minor, an American Civil War veteran, was also an inmate at an asylum for the criminally insane.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but cannot match its own hype.......2007-09-10

I think that I could've really enjoyed this book on its own merits had the author not continued to insist throughout that the story was horrifying, amazing, shocking, thrilling, electrifying, and tragic by turns. Rarely can these "sensationalist histories" live up to their own hype. I found the book a fascinating look into the development of the OED with the bonus of the intriguing back story of one its most unusual volunteer contributors. Isn't that good enough? Why must everything be oversold? Note to the publisher: Next time undersell, over-deliver.

                4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly absorbing.......2007-08-28

Locked inside the compilation of the Oxford English Dictionary is an astonishing, bizarre story poignantly told in The Professor and the Madman. Well written, this disturbing story flows easily, holding the reader's interest to the end, even through the definitions!

After reading this book I have also gained a new appreciation for the beloved dictionary.

4 out of 5 stars Sensationalized Version of a Gripping History.......2007-08-13

The Professor and the Madman is the yellow journalism version of the history of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), Sir James Murray, Dr. William Chester Minor, the treatment of the criminally insane during the Victorian period. I was particularly offended by the overly graphic details of Dr. Minor's self-mutilation (if you don't have a strong stomach, skip that section) and playing up of the fictionalized (and often repeated as fact) version of how Sir James and Dr. Minor first met. If the story weren't so interesting, I would encourage you to avoid the book.

Writing the first edition of the OED took 70 years and employed an unusual organizational method that has since become popular for monumental knowledge tasks -- relying on volunteers to do the bulk of the work of finding quotations that use each word in different ways over time. As someone who has always admired the OED, I enjoyed learning more about the process involved in its development. Unfortunately, that material is scattered throughout the book rather than concentrated where you can find it for a brief read through. The examples are good, however, if the material is needlessly diluted.

Thinking about that monumental effort will give you just the right foundation for appreciating how mental illness can affect parts of one's faculties while leaving others undisturbed, as the paranoid Dr. Minor employed his extensive free time in the Broadmoor Asylum for Criminally Insane and personal wealth to become of the most organized and helpful contributors to the OED.

Dr. Minor's story is the actual focus of the book. Unless you are quite interested in ironies, mental illness, and how the Victorians treated the criminally insane, you will probably find this book has more of Dr. Minor than you really care to know. It's a tragic story, but not one that I would have sought to read if the OED development process material hadn't been in the book. As background for that comment, you should know that I have a strong interest in criminal insanity and wrote my law school thesis on the subject. The book tells its story to make you feel the pain of being Dr. Minor quite well, but The Madman and the Professor won't advance your knowledge of mental illness or legal concepts of responsibility very much.

I was attracted to this book in part due to my work in leading the 400 Year Project, seeking ways to make improvements in everyone's lives at 20 times the normal rate between 2015 and 2035. I came away impressed that just a few people can make a remarkable contribution to an all-but-impossible project. I will redouble my efforts to locate such people for the 400 Year Project.

Tackle the impossible to find out what you can really do!

                3 out of 5 stars Slow.......2007-07-11

I did like this book and would have given it 3.5 stars is I could. The history was interesting and easy to get through, even for a casual reader of histories such as myself. However, for some reason I felt like I was dragging myself through parts. I am unable to put my finger on it, but some parts were just really slow for me. I would recomend that you read this book if for no reason than it is full of interesting facts that may come in handy at a cocktail party. In all seriousness, I did like it but read it on vacation so you can cruise through the slow parts.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS A MUST-READ.......2007-03-18

IF YOU ARE SOMEWHAT INTERESTED IN MENTAL ILLNESS AND NON-FICTION, THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ. FROM THE OPENING LINES TO THE END OF THE BOOK, THIS TRUE STORY WILL HAVE YOU TURNING PAGES. THE TITLE IS SOMEWHAT MISLEADING BECAUSE YOU PROBABLY THINK "SO WHAT" ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE OXFORD DICTIONARY. BUT DO NOT LET THE TITLE FOOL YOU. THIS IS A FASCINATING STORY FROM THE 1800'S ABOUT PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIA, BRILLIANT MINDS AND WRITING OF THE MOST IMPORTANT DICTIONARY OF ALL TIMES. THIS BOOK IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES

The book is well balanced between the history of the OED and the life and times of Dr. William Minor, (a major contributor).

Simon Winchester can hold back all the good stuff and disperse it throughout his writing. So just when you think you read it all, some new fact or weird quirk shows up. Interspersed with the story are relevant definitions, as they would appear in the OED. His description of Broadmoor makes you want to sign up on the waiting list.

From New York Times bestselling author Alan Dean Foster comes a fantastic new Pip and Flinx adventure starring a certain twenty-four-year-old redhead with emerald eyes and uncanny abilities and his devoted mini-dragon protector. Time and again, the daring pair have braved countless dangers to emerge victorious. But now Flinx attempts something that may be impossible for the heretofore undefeated hero. His mission: to take a vacation.

Never have the cares of the universe lain so heavily on Flinx’s shoulders, nor the forces arrayed against him seemed so invincible. Pursued by a newly revealed sect of doomsday fanatics, hunted by factions inside and outside the Commonwealth for transgressions real and imagined, expected to single-handedly avert a looming galactic crisis (or bear responsibility for the consequences), Flinx can be forgiven for feeling a slight touch of melancholy.

There’s only one solution for what ails Flinx, according to his ship’s AI. But taking time off is tricky business. With an increasing number of enemies chasing him with ever-greater enthusiasm, Flinx must find a getaway shrouded in obscurity. Jast, a planet smack in the middle of nowhere, is the perfect locale.

Yet even in a place where hardly anyone’s ever seen a human, Flinx and trouble can’t stay separated for long. Unfortunately, Flinx hasn’t a clue that his vacation paradise is in reality a danger zone of the highest magnitude. And by the time he learns the truth, it may be too late.

Entertaining, though the series does remind you of E C Tubb's character or a "Soap Opera," still it does keep you in anticipation of the next episode. Foster is a very accomplished writer.

3 out of 5 stars good, but not great.......2006-01-17

I liked the story. The poetic justice and lashes of irony that are doled out at key points were very skillfully done.

Most of the Flinx stories I recall had a constant tension of mortal danger to Flinx. In this book, there is a threat but the hazard lacks immediacy. Hmmm... maybe that is not accidental.

In the middle half of the book, there is an interesting terrorism motif. That is sort of the mill around the grist of the hero and the protagonist are ground. Though it is not the terrorists' doing, at least directly. Maybe it is an allegory to something. I cannot say for sure.

The ending, I must admit, is very good.

Flinx seems more adrift in this book than the other ones in the Flinx series. There are no love interests, very little mortal combat, very little heavy duty use of his psychic/empath powers. Those things exist in the story line but they are parts of previous and the next books, it appears.

I think the book is slightly better than average, as far as scifi books go. It deserves higher than a 3 but I am not quite willing to give it a 4 on its own merit. It is not as good as other books in the Flinx series, which I would unhesitatingly give a 5 in most cases, or at least a 4.

From reading the excerpt from the next book that is stuck in at the end of this one, it sounds like that one will have more action.

This book seems like it is just a diversion from the man saga of Flinx and his minidrag Pip. I suspect you could read that one and not miss having skipped this one. This story is pretty self contained and Flinx does not leave this world much intrinsically changed from how he arrived.

There is something new that happens in his relationship to the Aan but that is it as far as what he gains as a person or in status from this story.

I am still a big fan of the series and I avidly await reading what transpires in the next book.

3 out of 5 stars leaves you wanting a LOT more.......2006-01-01

This book seems to be a chapter rather than a book. I grew up with Pip and Flinx. Maybe I just expect a better, deeper book. However, this is just not some Star Wars scholck, this is a Pip and Flinx book. I expect better and deeper ! I still look forward to the next "chapter" of which there is a preview in the book. Hopefully "Running from the Diety" will be much deeper and better.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the read.......2005-12-26

Flinx, the mysterious (even to himself) young hero of Alan Dean Foster's first novel, has done a lot of maturing by the time this ninth installment in the series begins. He's acquired his own spaceship, operating by an AI (artifical intelligence unit) with which he trades verbal barbs. He's still accompanied by Pip, the Alaspinian mini-drag (miniature dragon, or - if you prefer - flying snake) who's been his companion since childhood. His empathic psychic abilities are still growing, and he still doesn't understand them. He's in a foul mood at present, because his most recent adventure has ended with the love of his life severely injured. Flinx blames himself, and having to leave Clarity behind - without even stopping to be sure she'll survive - galls him. Yet it's the only hope he has of keeping her safe. So his AI tells Flinx that he needs a vacation. Some time to spend deliberately doing nothing, in a place where he can't possibly be recognized. The AI picks out a remote planet called Jast.

Jast is home to a sentient species with a highly developed civilization. It's also a target for the Commonwealth's arch-nemesis, the AAnn Empire. When one of the reptilian aliens is assigned as Flinx's "guide" (or minder, actually), the young human doesn't object because he's met the AAnn before. He understands and speaks their language, and thinks he understands their culture quite well, too. But on that point he's mistaken, as he discovers when his "guide" nearly kills him and actually does leave him for dead in a rugged, isolated part of the Jastian landscape. Or he would discover that - if he could only remember how he got there.

Initially I groaned a bit when I read the chapter that introduced Flinx's amnesia. "What a tired old plot device!" I thought. But I kept reading, and before too many more pages were turned I'd decided that the tired old plot device was working just fine.

There's not much movement in this book toward resolution of the mysteries central to Flinx's on-going story. It's basically a standalone "planet of the week" adventure, with character development (for Flinx, and for the AAnn as a species) its only real contribution to the saga as a whole. But, with that understood and accepted, I found it an enjoyable tale. Not the best in the series (I've read them all), but definitely worth the read.
