Book Description
"An exhaustive job of researching and writing . . . Sliced has my highest recommendation." -- Lee Haney, seven-time IFBB Mr. Olympia "I almost wish I had the only available copy of Sliced, because it would give me a definite edge on my competitors at the next Ms. Olympia competition!" -- Anja Langer, IFBB European Champion, Junior World Champion, 2nd/Ms. Olympia, 1988 In a sport where nutrition represents 50 percent of the formula for success, rising to 90 percent during those crucial weeks just prior to competition, bodybuilders--from beginners to seasoned professionals--look to the latest nutrition strategies to gain the winning edge. Sliced represents up-to-date, proven diet programs and scientific data for achieving maximum muscularity and superior definition. Bill Reynolds, bestselling author and editor in chief of Joe Weider's Flex magazine, has teamed up with Negrita Jayde, former Canadian Overall National Champion, to give readers detailed and authoritative guidelines on nutrition for bodybuilders. Topics include the role of nutrition in hyping the immune system and improving between-workouts recovery, the seven degrees of muscularity from basic off-season shape to super-ripped, tips for increasing the basal metabolic rate and thus burning off excess supplements. In addition to more than 130 recipes and a variety of meal plans, this book offers Jayde's personal nutrition-training program for attaining peak muscularity. Now that drug testing is standard in competition, bodybuilders will particularly value the chapter on ergogenics--achieving an anabolic effect naturally--all in all making Sliced state-of-the-art in every detail. Bill Reynolds is the editor in chief of Joe Weider's Flex. His 15 years of work and travel with all the champions has resulted in more than 2,000 magazine articles and dozens of books, including Supercut and Joe Weider's Ultimate Bodybuilding. Negrita Jayde is a former Canadian Overall National Champion and author of numerous articles on the subject of nutrition.

This book is nothing more than a suppliment advertisement.
Don't be fooled...bodybuilders only........2001-07-08
Please make sure that when you're buying this book, you're not under the misconception that this is by any means a nutritional book. I was looking for dietary hints from people who I thought would be most in tune with their bodily needs. Instead, I received a book full of 'feel the burn' and 'maintain discipline' lifting slogans and little useful information for anyone who is not preparing for a competition. If that's what you're looking for, this is a wonderful book for you. For useful insites into nutrition and lean muscle mass correlation to your daily diet look somewhere else.
I use it as my nutrition bible!.......1999-04-24
This book is the only book I've found that goes deep into the importance of nutrition in bodybuilding. I refer back to it time and time again and each time I learn something new! It's great for those who just want to shed a little body fat for summer and for those who want to "cut-up" for competition. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about diet, exercise and strength training!
Excellent natural bodybuilding book, nothing left to chance!.......1997-06-27
Negrita Jayde writes a remarkably complete, concise, and approachable book on the intricacies of natural bodybuilding. She makes few assumptions about the knowledge level of her readers, but yet the book is so informative that even experienced bodybuilders/competitors won't be bored. She covers everything from visual impressions of the body, symmetry, nutrition, training, supplementation, lighting for training and photographs, definitions of physical (worth the price of the book alone!) condition, and presentation, plus some of the psychology of bodybuilding and that of the reactions of the general public to bodybuilders...the most complete and useful book I've seen...I use my copy continually

A Country That Works: Getting America Back on Track
ASIN: 1933392606 |
Book Description
AmericaÂ's working families have been struggling for decades, but the creative, can-do spirit that has served the country well in the past is alive and well, even if it is lacking in so many of our so-called leaders. The Service Employees International Union, known as the most aggressive voice for working Americans, went to the people to find out whatÂ's wrong and what can be right in our economy and politics.
The result is a collection of smart, concise, and achievable ideas for solving the big problems that face society, at home and even around the world. These proposals represent paradigm shifts. Their optimism is infectious. It is possible to combat global warming, to provide good quality and affordable healthcare to everyone, to shore up Social Security without give-aways to the finance industry, to promote small-business entrepreneurship, to improve education at all age-levels.
Proposed by regular people from coast to coast and all walks of life, the ideas in Since Sliced Bread are a wake-up call to policy makers and citizens alike that, when the people lead, the leaders will follow.

Excellent!.......2007-08-07
This is probably the best applied statistics book I have ever read. It is not one of the "for dummies" book, it does use some linear algebra and requires some knowledge of elementary statistics, but at the same time it is very clear and understandable. I think this is the only reasonable approach - whatever you are told, you cannot understand statistics if you are not prepared - you can't run before you learn to walk. If you buy a "statistics for dummies" you will only waste your money - you will learn a few names of statistical methods (and possibly what to click in your favourite stats program) but you will not be able to use them.
The authors start with a few examples, then lay out the formalism, and then use it in introducing various methods and techniques. The level of generality is not very high and you can read the book without the knowledge of, say, modern integration theory, yet it is sufficient for all the APPLIED problems that the reader is likely to meet in his/her work. (If you want to publish papers in AMSTAT journals you will have to learn more)
A potential strength of this book is the electronic version which you can download using the code given at the end of the book, but I haven't done this so far. I assume that if you travel a lot you can carry the book on your laptop instead of your backpack. I have downloaded Xplore and find it quite nice, however, my stats system of choice is R, so I used this instead.
There are some minor problems: for example there are some typos (some of them quite serious) and the end of chapter problems are not challenging enough (most can be done by inspection or by plugging numbers into Xplore). Speaking of the problems, the authors say that there is a solution manual, but it does not seem possible to get hold of it in any way. Still, the problems are so simple, that no solutions manual seems necessary.
All in all, I highly recommend this book. Both thumbs up!

Book Description
In this book Mircea Steriade cautions against the tendency of some neuroscientists to infer global brain functions such as arousal and sleep, epileptic events, and even conscious thinking from the properties of single cells. Based on his lifetime of research on intact brains, Steriade emphasizes the need to understand isolated networks within the context of the whole mammalian brain and to understand the brain of a behaving animal in terms of its fully dissected circuits. As much as knowledge of brain anatomy and function has progressed, Steriade is highly skeptical about the quest to relate consciousness to specific neuronal types.
The book's sections are "Changing Concepts of Localization of Brain Function," "Evolution of Methods in Brain Studies," "Similar and Contrasting Results from Studies in the Intact and Sliced Brain," "Building Blocks of Synaptic Networks Underlying Normal and Paroxysmal States," and "Of Neurons and Consciousness."

The 2007 Import and Export Market for Sawn, Chipped, Sliced, or Peeled Coniferous Wood over 6 Millimeters Thick in Australia
Philip M. Parker
Manufacturer: ICON Group International, Inc.
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 0497673134
Release Date: 2006-11-21 |
Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on sawn, chipped, sliced, or peeled coniferous wood over 6 millimeters thick in Australia face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying sawn, chipped, sliced, or peeled coniferous wood over 6 millimeters thick to Australia? How important is Australia compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of sawn, chipped, sliced, or peeled coniferous wood over 6 millimeters thick vary from one country of origin to another in Australia? On the supply side, Australia also exports sawn, chipped, sliced, or peeled coniferous wood over 6 millimeters thick. Which countries receive the most exports from Australia? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for sawn, chipped, sliced, or peeled coniferous wood over 6 millimeters thick in Australia. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for sawn, chipped, sliced, or peeled coniferous wood over 6 millimeters thick for those countries serving Australia via exports, or supplying from Australia via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Australia fits into the world market for imported and exported sawn, chipped, sliced, or peeled coniferous wood over 6 millimeters thick. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Australia in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Australia is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Australia compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

Customer Reviews:
The Complexity of the human condition........2007-08-01
I'm disappointed in most of the other reviews of this book and the low rankings other readers gave it. Maybe they just don't get it. Maybe they have trouble seeing how complex we humans are. Most men, like myself, tend to be reluctant to show emotion in public. We tend to hide all but anger so we don't give away our weaknesses. I taught English grammar and literature for thirty years and although Ann Hood does not spend a lot of time on any one emotion, she manages to convey just how complex we humans are by quickly glossing over the thirty-six emotions she shows us in her book. I appreciate the way she organized her little book on creating character emotions. I wish I had read it soon after it came out in print. I would have added some of what she wrote into my lessons on characterization. Although I haven't read some of the other books out there about creating emotions, like the one by Orson Scott Card, which I plan to read next, I can not discount the fact that she has provided me with some valuable seeds for thought. As a teacher, I've learned that there are many ways to teach one thing and one method will not reach everyone. I have three books on this subject and Hood's is the first one I've read and I like her approach. I recommend this book to anyone who seriously wants to improve his or her writing and do not stop with just this one book. Read others so that you will really learn how to write. I'm also a writer. My wife has written national and international bestsellers. One book my wife wrote was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. I've edited my wife's work, and nothing woke me to the complexity of developing the characters I write about in my stories like this book did. I hope the other books I will read after this one add more to my growing knowledge. Reading this book was like opening a door and walking into a well-lit room. I get it. I finally get it. Maybe I'm just dense and it took someone like Ann Hood to wake me up so I understand what emotion is all about.
Specific and helpful.......2006-02-19
Imagine my surprise when I recognized my own writing mistakes in the examples of bad writing. This immediately helped me take my writing to the next level. I have many cherished writing books, and this one holds up well in comparison. It is helpful because it's specific and focused. I couldn't wait to get to the computer and apply the things I learned in this book. I'm happy to add it to my bookcase.
Like Nasty Cough Syrup.......2005-12-11
The last few books I bought and read on writing from Amazon.com were excellent and I started this with high hopes. Unfortunately, I started skimming about three-fourths of the way through and ended up skipping the last couple chapters.
This book has a fault I have noticed with others. When they quote another work, it always falls flat. The quotes are taken out of context, we are missing all the author had to say about the character in the previous hundred pages or so. What this means, is the "good" examples she gives us seem, well, so so. Of course the bad examples stand on their own and are bad, something anyone would do with little thought.
Rather than so many chapters on each individual emotion, I would rather see more extensive general work. I would like to see many, many examples of good emotions written by the author herself, and not a quote from a book, but a paragraph written that stands on its own. Hood tries to set up the "good" examples, but it can only be done imperfectly.
Bad emotion writing are cliches (mad has a hatter, hungry as a horse, etc.) and miss identifying the emotion, anger instead of fear.
Good emotion writing accuratly and freshly describes the emotions the character feels.
In conclusion, like cough syrup, you have to take this, but could it just taste better? Worth reading, perhaps, but put it down in your priority list.
PS My short list of must reads:
The First Five Pages, Noah Lukeman
Writing the Breakout Novel, Donald Mass
45 Master CHaracters, Victoria Lynn Schmidt
Dialogue, Gloria Kempton
Description & Setting, Ron Rozelle
Scene & Structure, Jack M. Bickham
You Can Write a Novel, James V. Smith Jr.
PPS My short list of stinkers that slipped through:
Creating Character Emotions, Ann Hood
Writing Dialogue, Tom Chiarella
Theme & Strategy, Ronald B. Tobias
Short but good.......2005-08-21
This book makes a good attempt at explaining how to convey the emotions of ones characters. As an Augsberger, however, I need a little more assistence than this lent.
Great reference!.......2005-04-05
A masterful piece of work! Beautifully organized. Short, to the point, brilliantly concise. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly! Far more effective and memorable than the well-known Clint Eastwood movie. Without blurring the line in any way, Ann Hood tells it like it is. A return to apprenticeship is called for where needed, and a good ready-reference is provided where not. She makes clear that ignoring these extremes could spell a quick trip to oblivion, shorthand for which is the bluntness of her message. Red flags, whistles, and horns of warning abound. If you are about to launch a writing effort saturated with raw emotion, you'd better pay heed. ##### This mastersroke of precise problem depiction should be a much dog-eared addition to every writer's library.

Aresh Look At Developing New Hockey Players.......2005-06-02
If you've wondered what's happened to Stanley Cup winner Bruce Driver since he wrapped up his illustrious 15-year career playing hockey with the New Jersey Devils, you'll find the answer in the new book, "The Baffled Parent's Guide to Coaching Youth Hockey". Admirably, Driver has been teaching young, would-be hockey stars the secrets of the game.
Don't be put off by the long title - in this volume, Driver, and co-author Clare Wharton have scored a major goal with this highly readable and entertaining offering. If you've stumbled across it, you've found treasure. Driver has wisely teamed up with Wharton, a skilled writer with an extensive background in Hockey. She has taken the shoulder pads, the knee pads, the helmet and skates of the material and, with humor, molded them into a star of the ice.
With sections on everything needed for first-time and veteran coaches alike, NHL drills appropriate for youth hockey, proven team-management techniques, tips on teaching and understanding hockey fundamentals and so much more, Driver lets us in on all of his secrets.
Hockey moms (and they are legion) who have had to spend endless afternoons - and early mornings, if time on the ice is limited - driving their little Drivers to the ice rink for practice, and dads, stuck at work but footing the bills for all that expensive equipment, will be happy to learn, through this enlightening tome, what happens to junior once he gets there.
"The Baffled Parent's Guide to Coaching Youth Hockey" is a winner! Anyone with even a passing interest in hockey, or sports in general, will find Bruce Driver and Clare Wharton's book a delightful experience.

Great book that touches on every aspect.......2005-01-12
Overall, this is a great book that touches on all aspects of hockey. I am a high school hockey coach and this book has some really nice drills and information in it. We are using a couple already in practice that work great. One thing that I was hoping for (4 stars instead of 5)was a little more intense drills or more detailed info for the higher levels of hockey. Also, it only has 3 goalie drills which was a little disturbing. As a goalie coach as well as an assistant, I find that upsetting since the position is so important, but yet it's the most overlooked. However if you are a parent or coach looking for a book that touches on every aspect of hockey as well as drills this is definitely the one. I do find the parts on dealing with parents and setting up practice plans also helpful. It was well written and has a lot of great info from an NHL player and Stanley Cup winner. It is one of the best books that puts it all together for you to learn the sport of hockey. I would suggest picking up the book: Complete hockey instruction by Dave Chambers with this book and as far as goaltending is concerned, go to www.hockeygoaltender.com. That has some of the best info concerning that position. With these 3 items you would have a pretty good arsenal on coaching and understanding the sport.
Unsurpassed Clarity, Detail & Readability!.......2005-01-10
I was floored by thoroughness of expertise and professionalism in this book, which goes hand-in-hand with the sheer passion for the game and wisdom in teaching children that comes through on every page. No detail of technique, sportsmanship or strategy is left out here, and the book is as useful a guide for would-be coaches inexperienced in the ways of the game as it is for veteran coaches looking broaden their knowledge base.
Bruce Driver's talent both as a former Stanley Cup winner and a long time coach combined with Clare Wharton's flawless and engaging writing style makes this book an absolute must for hockey lovers new and old.
REFEREE RECOMMENDATION.......2004-12-03
As a USA Hockey certified Referee I recommend this book to anyone involved in youth hockey at any level. This is how hockey should be taught.
This book has it all.......2004-11-25
A complete resource for coaches, yes, but also something every hockey fan and parent should read too. Presented in a concise and logical manner, with no detail left out. Extensive photos and drill diagrams for all situations. I found it to be very well written.
