Informative in some aspects.......2001-05-24
I was hoping for something that explained more of the current social and cultural conditions of Mongolia. The title of this book is somewhat misleading, this book is a concise history of Foreign politics imposed on Mogolia and the conditions of foriegn relations with Mongolia, but it does not seem to say much about the attitudes of the Mongolians. This book would be good to cite in a history essay.
A welcome, informative, comprehensive, analytic survey........2000-06-06
In Mongolia In The Twentieth Century: Landlocked Cosmopolitan, Stephen Kotkin and Bruce Elleman draw upon knowledgeable contributors to examine Mongol history over the past century, including Mongol communities in Russia and China. The contributions are based on new archival research and recent fieldwork by the world's top experts, including four authors from Mongolia, and others from Japan, Russia, Taiwan, Great Britain, and the United States. Mongolia In The Twentieth Century surveys the history of Sino-Russian competition over Outer Mongolia; international diplomacy concerning Outer Mongolia; and Mongolia today including its demography, culture, nationalism, and rapid transformation. Mongolia In The Twentieth Century is a welcome and informative contribution to international studies and an essential addition to any academic, governmental, or community library collection.

Book Description
In the aftermath of World War II, Martha Quest finds herself completely disillusioned. She is losing faith with the communist movement in Africa, and her marriage to one of the movement's leaders is disintegrating. Determined to resist the erosion of her personality, she engages in the first satisfactory love affair and breaks free, if only momentarily, from her suffocating unhappiness.
Landlocked is the fourth novel of Doris Lessing's classic Children of Violence sequence of novels, each a masterpiece in its own right, and collectively an incisive, all encompassing vision of our world in the twentiethcentury.

Book Description
Since the publication of the third edition of this unique and world renowned bibliography, thirteen land-locked territories have joined the United Nations and the ranks of independent States: nine former Soviet socialist republics, Slovakia and Macedonia, and Ethiopia (land-locked throughout its long history except for the period 1952--1992) and Andorra (land-locked always but recognized as a sovereign State only in 1993). Thus, by any reckoning, there are now more than one third more land-locked States in the world than there were only three years ago. Some are already experiencing problems with transit across their more fortunate coastal neighbors -- and even other land-locked neighbors -- and with their uses of the sea, and it is likely that such problems will multiply and intensify before they are resolved. This fourth edition contains a number of new features, all intended to make it more useful, as well as more complete and up-to-date, than its predecssors. The format has been improved in several ways, there are now far more cross-references and the subject index and table of contans have been greatly expanded. The author-editor index has been divided in two, with a separate index now for corporate authors; i.e., corporations, countries, universities, associations and other bodies.

Alaska is more than just the largest state in the Union; it's also a state of mind, as Ann Mariah Cook found out. Together with her husband, 3-year-old daughter, and 32 purebred Siberian huskies, she moved there from New Hampshire in order to train for the legendary Yukon Quest, the most rigorous sled-dog race in the world. Her tough, thoughtful memoir, Running North, chronicles the ordeals as well as the rewards of their mushers' life. In the course of their transformation from cheechakos, or greenhorns, to sourdoughs, or seasoned Alaskans, Cook and her husband learned to defend themselves and their dogs from extreme weather, adapted to mushing in Alaskan conditions, and even absorbed the niceties of Yukon social customs (hint: always put on a pot of coffee for visitors). The book ends with a harrowing account of the race, complete with packs of wolves, howling blizzards, minus-60-degree temperatures, and a few narrow escapes. But this is as much Ann's story as it is her husband's, and as a result it goes far beyond the confines of a simple adventure story. Full of intriguing glimpses into sled-dog (and musher) psychology as well as lyrical observations about the beauty of the Yukon landscape, Running North is as much concerned with the who and why of adventure as with its how and when. Leaving behind the comfort and security of Cook's New England life required a multitude of adjustments, from the design of the dogs' booties to a new appreciation of interior decorating, Alaska-style. In the end, however, it was going home that proved hard: "Returning to New Hampshire, I saw my life as a stranger might view it. I could not get used to so many houses, so many neighbors, so many social demands. Everything in my life had been redefined in only seven and a half months." --Mary Park
Book Description
Now in paperback, the acclaimed story of a family's struggle to complete the world's most grueling dogsled race.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2003-06-04
Running North is an excellent book for anyone interested in Alaska or mushing. Ann Mariah Cook captures the feel for Alaska and dog sledding perfectly. Even if you have no true interest in the subject you will find your self swept into the wonderful world of dog sledding. Cook clearly brings to life the people they met, friends they made, and the hazards that tried to stop them from running the Yukon Quest. One of the most grueling races in the world. I found I learned a great deal from this book without it ever becoming boring or slowing down. And most importantly she tells about the dogs, the wonderful creatures who work so willingly for us. Sometimes heartbreaking sometime funny, this book is an interesting, exciting read for anyone.
A family who followed their dream one special winter.......2001-03-03
Subtitled, "A Yukon Adventure," Ann Mariah Cook's fascinating 1998 memoir chronicles the time in 1992 that she, her husband George and three-year old daughter moved to Alaska to participate in the Yukon Quest, the toughest sled dog race in the world. It was George who ran the race; Ann was the one who drove the truck, carried the gear, took care of their daughter and gave him moral support through the long months of training, and eventually through the grueling event.
I've read other books about dog mushing, but this one had the unique point of view of a woman who, while not actually on the sled during the race, experienced her own Yukon Quest experience. She writes clearly and honestly, not shying away from the disagreement that she had with the young woman they brought with them to act as the official "handler" of the dogs. She writes about George's experience on the trail, his frostbite, fatigue, narrow escapes and indomitable spirit as he pitted himself against natural forces over which he had little control. She writes about the dogs, their personalities and backgrounds and about the tough choices she and George had to make when it came time to pick the actual team of 12 out of their much larger group. She writes about the people they meet along the way, her Alaskan neighbors, fisherman, storekeepers and the other mushers. And she writes about Alaska itself, making me yearn to experience its beauty and majesty.
There was one small line drawing of the Yukon Quest trail and I kept returning to it again and again as the book moved along and the tension mounted. There is also a photo of Ms. Cook and one of her dogs on the back cover. I wish there were more photos, but I didn't really need them because her descriptions were so clear. Recommended.
awesome.......2000-09-28
This book was one of the greatest ones I have ever read. I race sled dogs, and I found it so interesting...I could and have felt everything they go through. Also my grandmother who bought the book for me said she started reading it one night and read it the whole thing that night, and she has never raced and knows nothing about it, and she LOVED it. So it is a good book for anyone to read!!
Great Adventure.......1999-12-26
What a pleasant surprise to read a literary and exciting story of Alaska and dog-racing. Thoroughly enjoyable. I totally recommend this book to all adventure lovers.
Enduring Determination.......1999-12-13
Fascinating details of the "Cook Team" in the greuling Yukon Quest are revealed in this book. Ann and her husband move to Alaska from the eastern United States so that they can experience "real" dog sled racing. Their adventure is difficult from the beginning; however, they eventually grow to love the Alaskan atmosphere. Despite much adversity, from friends and neighbors, about their inexperience, George and Ann enter the Yukon Quest. Details about survival, cultural adjustment, and everlasting memories are enriched in this educational book about the Yukon Quest.

Customer Reviews:
A great reminder .......2006-11-04
Though a lot of the ideas were known to me before, I never organized them in a way this book does. It provides an insightful review of these ideas that help people become more creative and smart. However, the academic writing style is a little bit annoying.
Anyway, a great book with which you can reference frequently
concise & precise: does the job.......2006-04-19
This text was required reading for my college freshman year critical thinking class (over 15 years ago) and I highly recommend it for students. The approach to problems and issues is very methodical and forces one to consider styles that may complement the habitual.
I've found myself coming back to the book when feeling "stuck" with a problem and feeling like I was not tapping the full range of creative solutions that could at least be considered. Our minds are naturally lazy and reach for the common or habitual answers - it's not a bad thing, it may just be the result of successful evolutionary survival to have gotten us to this point. Putting the discipline this book will teach you to use consistently will give you a structure to guide extra effort towards solving problems for which the same old answers fail to satisfy you.
Contrary to some of the criticism I've read here, I believe the author addresses how emotions can be used and incorporated in the process rather than being suppressed or ignored. One area that I believe the author can improve, is in the use of visuals* such as a process map or visual overview for the problem solving process. This would make the material more accessible, powerful and memorable. I've found in the workplace that creating visual flowcharts for business processes can enhance communication, absorption and adherence to the "best practices" you recommend. I plan to contact the author with this suggestion.
Hope you enjoy the book,
-Frank
*I have an older edition and this gap may have already been addressed by the author in subsequent versions.
Required Reading For Any True Thinker.......2006-04-10
Ruggiero has written the best book to date on critical thinking, in a time when it is most needed. There is clarity in his writing that is rare and required to hold the attention of those without critical skills.
Some of the critics claim that this book is "insulting to their intelligence". They should remember that you cannot insult intelligence, only pride. The book is clear and very direct in its presentation.
Other critics have attacked Ruggiero's appeal to control your emotions in making proper judgments. Its was Aristotle who said, "The young overdo everything. They love too much, hate too much, & the same with everything else." This is not saying that passion should be taken from all aspects of life. Alternatively, to use a contemporary example that the young can relate to, Stephen Colbert taught the young about the word "truthiness". Truthiness is the marriage of emotion and logic.
Every year it is reported how American students are falling further behind students of other countries. This world has real problems and these problems are very complex. The current generation lacks these skills; the next generation needs these skills in order to fix the mess that we have made. The pop culture that has surround the minds of our youth, originally conceived to develop the economy, has turned our people into unthinking followers.
The United States is the most powerful nation in the world, but power without critical thinking leaders is the most dangerous situation that we could throw ourselves into. Intelligence without power is worthless, save its influence. The United States has the power, resources, and the schools to produce something that has never happen in the history of this world; a chance to bring about the conditions for world peace.
Every political disaster that the United States has endured can be traced to the lack of use of these skills. The Art of Thinking should be required reading every year, over and over. Printed and scattered in every hotel room. And memorized before allowed to run for public office.
In the time we refer to as the Dark Ages, rhetoric was required to even be considered for a degree. Let us complement our technology with intelligence, let us balance our power with justice.
Great Insights on How "Thinking" Works.......2003-09-02
This title was the first text book I used in my first ever philosophy class at college some 20 years ago. It really inspired me to start "thinking" about how people think. The flow of the topics and the content successfully aroused my mind and the book actually helped me a lot on ways of thinking even until now. I just want to let everyone know that this title is an excellent read for teenagers to adults alike.
The Best Critical Thinking Primer Ever Written.......2002-07-27
I first read this marvelous book while doing the research for my book "Why Didn't I Think of That? - Think the Unthinkable and Achieve Creative Greatness." Anyone serious about improving their thinking capacities simply must read Ruggiero's book. Used as the primary text in many college level critical and creative thinking courses, "The Art of Thinking" covers both basic and advanced concepts using well designed examples and artfully crafted exercises helping readers to learn both easily and completely. At signing events, and after speaking engagements, when readers of my book ask me to recommend other related works, I always place Ruggiero's book at the top of the list.

Customer Reviews:
Best Book on the Islands.......2007-10-08
I have been to Oahu several times prior to obtaining this book. I found it to be most helpful, giving you all the places to visit. The description of the beaches, hikes, attractions, etc. is very accurate. This is an excellent book to plan a vacation to your island paradise trip.
Not my favorite of Doughty's books.......2007-09-07
We purchased this book because we were quite pleased with the Kauai and Maui books, but weren't as impressed with this book. This may be because our Oahu trip was our first to Hawaii with children, and these books aren't especially tailored to a family vacation. More descriptions of family-friendly events, more restaurant and hotel reviews and less really-off-the-beaten-path sites would have been preferred for our family vacation. However, if you are looking for a book that tells you more about the hidden Oahu, this is probably for you. As with the other books, the author is candid and fair.
A MUST for any Oahu vacation.......2007-08-21
By far, one of the best travel series I've read- I wish Wizard publications covered the entire world with their practical, tell-it-like-it-is approach to getting the most out of your time in the islands. The pictures were on par with the DK Eyewitness Guides (my favorite series until I stumbled upon this one!) and the maps were detailed and easy to follow. In addition to the fantastic reviews and recommendations in the book, the website provides additional information that is worth checking out, and that's entirely free! I would insist that any Hawaii traveler consider this Wizard Guide as an essential travel companion.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-08-07
Oahu Revealed was an excellent source of info for our vacation. We saved a lot of money and avoided some hassles based on the help from this book.
Highly recommended!
the most valuable thing I bought for our honeymoon.......2007-08-06
Torn and worn out now, this book has all your typical travel advice, really good maps too. However, the in-depth commentary on the sites and activities were excellent!!....Things I did not find in the other two books I purchased. I would reccommend this book to anyone. -Ken
