Valuable Information Cut.......2005-08-18
I agree with Josh's review. This book has been condensed quited a bit and a lot of valuable information and illustrations were cut out. I prefer the older book as well.
Newer always better?.......2003-02-23
I am an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor. Having used the old text, "Lifeguarding Today," I was somewhat disappointed in the way that many valuable skills had been cut from the new program. Nevertheless, this is still the best lifeguarding program around, and with new modules coming out all the time, the American Red Cross is sure to make up for the skills that they've removed from the new program. A+!!!
Book Description
This is the official manual of the United States Lifesaving Association. This manual is a comprehensive training and reference text for open water lifesaving. It is required for all training programs conducted in accordance with USLA Lifeguard Agency Certification Program.
Learning aids are provided throughout including references, web sites, and discussion points. New material has been added in several areas, such as aquatic life hazards (shark bites and jellyfish stings), ice rescue, pathophysiology of drowning and sudden immersion syndrome, and junior lifeguard programs. Expanded and updated coverage of OSHA regulations, report forms, incident command, historical material and many other areas have been added to this extensive revision.

Book.......2007-02-07
This book is great if you need it for a lifeguarding class, way cheaper than bookstore prices.
One of a kind!!!.......2003-12-15
The United States Lifesaving Association has done it again. This book is the premier reference on open water lifesaving. Whether, an upstart department or an established older agency, this book provides specific information about lifeguarding methods that every lifeguard must know. If a lifeguard reads this book and practices what is in it, they will be able to provide excellent service to the public. Buy the United States Lifesaving Association, Open Water Lifesaving today. Make sure your next training class uses this Manual.

The United States Lifesaving Association Manual of Open Wate.......1999-12-09
The United States Manual of Open Water Lifesaving is a required text for training all of our seasonal ocean lifeguards. As an Operations Lieutenant for the City of Newport Beach the book has been an invaluable reference with general information, concepts and specific procedural techniques. There are photographs that depict various aspects of modern lifesaving and example report forms. A lifeguard agency or public safety agency that engages in open water rescue is remiss in not having this book for their students and as a reference. Renowned lifeguard experts from around the United States contributed to this excellent book. The book could also have significant impact internationally if a beach had to start a lifguard agency where one does not exist today. If one wants to become a lifeguard, this is a must have text. I am glad that this book exists and am hoping for a new edition that will be even better. Buy it today, you can't go wrong.
The manual ocean lIfeguards have been waiting for........1999-11-30
Open Water Lifeguards now have a manual written by veteran lifeguards who have put a lifetime of experience into easily read text. Used in combination with local training plans and protocols the USLA manual provides the supplementary material necessary for the complete training and retraining of open water lifeguards..Chapters on professionalism, the aquatic environment, meteorological considerations, preventative lifeguarding and surveillance, emergency planning and management, lifeguard health and safety and many other related topics provide a depth of training keyed to the open water environment unavailable from any other resource. Appendices providing useful beach management forms, an extensive glossary, surf boat rowing techniques and a thorough index complete usefulness of this valuable reference.
Open water lifeguarding in the 21st century requires thorough preparatory training in techniques and procedures as well as mental and physical conditioning. This manual provides an excellent tool for establishing a training plan that will develop competent lifeguards in accordance with contemporary standards of care emergency management guidelines.

USLA Manual Used in Hawaii.......1999-11-30
The USLA Manual of Open Water Lifesaving edited by Chris Brewster is the basic textbook used in the training programs for the following agencies in the State of Hawaii: Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division, City and County of Honolulu, Aquatics Division, County of Maui, Water Safety Section, County of Kauai, and the Aquatics Division, County of Hawaii. These agencies are responsible for providing ocean lifeguard services for their respective counties (each Hawaiian Island is considered a county, with Maui County including Molokai and Lanai and Kauai County including the island of Niihau.) All of the mentioned agencies are certified by the USLA under the Agency Certification Program. The USLA Manual of Open Water Lifesaving is the only manual of its kind that addresses the ocean/open water environment and the skills and knowledge essential to become an open water lifeguard. The manual is the result of the collaboration of lifeguards from across the country and provides historical as well as up to date information on open water lifeguarding. Descriptions of environmental conditions that the beach lifeguard will encounter and methods of dealing with these conditions are included in the text, as well as excellent chapters on drowning, prevention, rescues and equipment, and emergency medical treatment. An appendix which includes sample forms used by lifeguard agencies is also a valuable resource for those who administer lifeguard services. The textbook is well written, clearly organized, and serves as the fundamental resource for our agencies in the Hawaiian Islands.

The ALMOST Definative Ligfeguard Training Text.......2002-02-18
As an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instructor I have had the opertunity to teach many classes using the above text. Very detailed descriptions and photographs of skills. My only complaint about this text is that you still need a seperate book for the CPR portion of the course. The r2001 release of te program has the CPR in the same book. Even while teaching to the new program, Lifeguarding Today remains one of my most used books for information and examples.
A well written, complete lifeguarding training book........2000-09-04
"Lifeguarding Today" is very complete, organized and well written. A good choice for any lifeguard-in-training!
A definite lifeguard training text!.......1999-03-26
As a lifeguard training instructor with the American Red Cross, I would recommend this book! A key chapter is chapter 2 which mentions the American with Disabilities Act or ADA and how a lifeguard should interact with the public. Rescue skills are no good if you don't have good people skills! I like the idea of additional modules with chapters 13 and 14 lifeguarding at waterpark and waterfront facilities. SO if you take the additional modules you already have the book!!
A must in Water Safety.......1999-02-23
This book does a good job of explaining lifeguarding and the skills needed. It has a lot of great information. There is information in this book that other lifeguard courses don't focus on and I feel as an aquatics director is needed. I would have liked to see CPR skills included, some of the old Red Cross skills, and skills tought in other lifeguard courses. However everything this book is worth reading. I liked it so much that I now teach the course. This is a good buy.

Book Description
I wish for this book to catapult you out of bed and smack into the center of one of your dreams, or lure you back to bed, where you will lie helplessly laughing at all your mistakes and frozen moments.
I wish for this book to free the part of your soul that longs to write epic novels, recite Yeats by heart, play a musical instrument by magic, or perform in a play about your life that you create and design. Most of all, I want this book to give you a boost up over the fence that prevents you from moving forward and inward.

Bodacious Book of Succulence.......2007-06-09
I love Sark... I have many of her books and couldn't wait to get this one. It lives up to the rest.
Bodacious, Bold and Brilliant.......2007-05-11
SARK hit another homer with this one! A follow up to her successful book, Succulent Wild Woman, this book welcomes people from all walks of life to be bodacious and succulent and enjoy life! It's her own way of saying CARPE DIEM! Thanks Susan!
What a Fun Book.......2006-12-05
I loved this book. It has a lot of great information in it and it is written in a most enjoyable, colorful way. A refreshing point of view without beating you up. Highly recommended for all.
kudos from a SARK rookie.......2001-04-19
This was my first experience with SARK, and I was skeptical. I read the book in two nights, in a warm bath, and came out a SARK fan!! She is playful and complex at the same time - there are so many levels to her writing. If you are in the mood for a light read, this is it - in the mood for a deep thoughtful read, this is it! - don't let the childlike look of the book fool you - this woman has a lot to say, but manages to play while she says it - refreshing!
My First Sark Book.......2000-06-05
I've always admired Sark's books when I went to the bookstore. I am fascinated with the bright colors, pictures, and the fact that they are all handwritten.
I was really turned on to them when a friend had a copy of this book, and I liked it so much that I rushed right out and bought it.
The book makes me happy, makes me think, makes me want to share it with others. If you are looking for a book that can be read in bits and pieces, or one to devour in one sitting, this is it.
Book Description
Steve Rushin, a four-time finalist for the National Magazine Award, has been hailed as one of the best sportswriters in America. In The Caddie Was a Reindeer he circumnavigates the globe in pursuit of extreme recreation. In the Arctic Circle, he meets ice golfers. In Minnesota, he watches the National Amputee Golf Tournament, where one participant tells him, “I literally have one foot in the grave.” Along the way, Rushin meets fellow travelers like Joe Cahn, a professional tailgater who confesses aboard the RV in which he lives: “It’s wonderful to see America from your bathroom.” And even Rushin has logged fewer miles in pursuit of extreme recreation than Rich Rodriguez, a marathon roller-coaster rider who makes endless loops for entire summers on coasters around the world. The Caddie Was a Reindeer is a ride to everywhere: to south London (where Rushin downs pints with the King of Darts), to the Champs-Elysees (where the author indulges in “excessive nightclubbing” with World Cup soccer stars), and to Japan (where Rushin eats soba noodles with the world champion of competitive eating). Enlightening, hilarious, and unexpectedly heartwarming, this collection is not a body of work: it’s a body of play.
Customer Reviews:
Underrated, overlooked sports classic.......2005-05-13
Rushin goes everywhere in pursuit of a story. My favorite (maybe) is "Beers and Shots" which takes you to the heart of dart world in a London pub, where he measures the pressure that Ted Hankey felt while defending his World Darts Championship (a prize worth a quarter of a million dollars) against all comers. Rushin nacechecks Martin Amis' London Fields, which he praises as the "epic darts novel" but for my money he (Rushin) can say just as much in 4,000 words as Amis can say in 90,000. He's funnier too, asserting that "sometimes the healthiest thing a body can do is get out of the sunshine, off the green grassm out of the fresh air and breathe in the opposite--air that is equal parts smoke, tension, and BO. Only then will you rediscover what first drew you, as a child, to games."
Some of his pieces collected here are a little flimsy, like an essay poking fun at some of the outlandish names of athletes, such as "the insuperable Hannibal Navies, whose name always conjures in my head a fleet of amphibious elephants--in bathing cas and nose plugs--swimming ashore at Normandy en route to the Alps." It's kind of cute, but minor, feels like padding in the context of the other, meatier pieces.
His reconstuction of the 1962 Mets is priceless, even to those of us who lived through the horror. He calls it "Bad Beyond Belief" and reading through the shocking details once again you rest a little bit easy, knowing that no team, anywhere, will ever play as badly as our beloved Mets that year. His profiles of Roone Arledgfe and Jim Brown are razor sharp, and his visit to the Topps Factory plays out the dream of every little boy.
You might have read some of these stories before in SPORTS ILLUSTRATED. You'll enjoy them even more in this sharp volume.
There was only one I didn't like, the misguided attempt at South Asian Pacific dialect in Rushin's account of his travels in Bali, called wincingly, "Mr. Stiv's Excellent Adventure." Pointing out how funny foreigners talk must have been a scream back in the days of Bret Harte and Mark Twain but today it goes down like a lead balloon and I'm surprised none of Rushin's editors took him aside for a chat.
An unqualified delight.......2005-04-19
Rushin has the ability to weave show-stopping funny stories into larger narrative and to recreate the past with the sensuous immediacy of childhood. He's clever without any of the aridity which, for some reason, that word is supposed to imply.
Immensely readable.
