Well written, sensitive book about superb athlete.......2003-07-05
THis is one of the best sports biographies I have read. Its very well written, very unbiased, sensitive and portrays an accurate picture of this amazing human being. Its also a fun read and reveals a side of the Babe, her pranks, egocentric often annoying style, that few knew.In my mind she surely was the greatest woman,s athlete and this book truly does her justice. You won,t be disappointed
Interesting Read of Champion Who Doesn't Get Enough PR.......2002-01-12
Amazing champion this lady was. Her accomplishments in a short life are dazzling. Like many others naturally gifted with athleticism and a burning desire to compete and win, Babe did just that.
This is well written, but suffers from my own perspective with an underlying desire to document how cruel and unmodern Babe's cultural times were to not allow lesbian relationships to be openly exposed and women to be subjected to conformity.
We live in just the reversal, where abnormality shines brightly as acceptable or even desirable, and where has this sexual revolution gotten our society?
Babe loved the game of golf, and my interest was primarily in this achievement area of her career. She should deserve more recognition as one of the game's truly greats!
Good........1999-10-21
Since I am from Beaumont, Texas (South Park) and a fan of the BABE, I found the book a very interesting read. I was unaware of the Babe's relationship with Betty Dodd; however, I feel that an individual's sexual life is their own business. I can't help but wonder how the author could have been sure of their special relationship without ever being in the same bedroom with them??? Changing her colostomy bag is hardly a sexual act, but the type of action from a nurse, close relative or friend.
The work of a gifted writer and teacher who did her homework.......1999-08-23
As a former student of Dr. Susan Cayleff, I found the book to be a wonderful and informative read. Knowing Dr. Cayleff and her constant search for truth and knowledge of women and their accomplishments, this book is one more testament to her thoroughness, her brilliance as an academic, and the passions that she imbues in her students - - the fire of wanting to know more about women, who and what they are, who and what they have been, and who and what they can become. Anything that Dr. Cayleff writes stands as witness to her intellect, her love of the written word, and her desire to spread the joyous news of women's feats and accomplishments. Is it any wonder that this book was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize? Keep them coming Susan. The next one will be terrific too, after all, I had the opportunity to be one of your research assistants for the next book. Thank you for all of it, the books, the awareness that you instilled and inspired in so many of your students and readers, for your caring about humanity in general, and women in particular.
A great analysis of Babe's life, times, & women's sports.......1999-01-29
Cayleff has thoroughly researched and documented Babe's life and times. She conducted extensive interviews with surviving members of Babe's family, friends, and partner (Betty Dodd). Cayleff also incorporated massive amounts of journalistic accounts--sports writers, magazines accounts, etc. This is not a fluff biography--the book will teach you about what it meant to be a woman in Babe's time, what it meant to be a female athlete, and how Babe managed--and manipulated--these things. Babe fans will learn more about her, and scholars will be able to follow up on Cayleff's work through her extensive endnotes. This is the first book to tell of Babe's relationship with Betty Dodd, but Cayleff does not label it "lesbian." That is because Babe herself never did. Remember that this was the 1950s. They were life partners, spouses. The loved each other. Cayleff's book is important for bringing this relationship to light, as well as many other hidden realities of Didrikson's life--her heroism as an "out" cancer patient (when it was taboo to talk about it), as well as how Babe manipulated the press. As dozens of published book review has stated (see quotes above at this cite), this is absolutely THE most extensive research ever done on Babe. I've seen rave reviews of the book in SOJOURNER, WEST COAST WOMAN, WOMEN'S REVIEW OF BOOKS, and SPORTS HISTORY REVIEW, among many others.

Book Description
When Babe Didrikson Zaharias was a child, her goal was to be the greatest athlete who ever lived. Few people come as close to their childhood goals as Babe did. She was an All-American basketball player, an Olympic gold medalist in track and field, and a championship golfer who won eighty-two amateur and professional tournaments. She also mastered tennis, played exhibition baseball, and was an accomplished diver and bowler. The Associated Press elected her Woman Athlete of the Year six times and in 1950 named her Woman Athlete of the Half Century. Babe accomplished all of this at a time when most girls and women didn't take part in these sports. This insightful and well-researched biography from Newbery medalist Russell Freedman brings to life the woman who changed the world's perception of female athletes forever-Babe Didrikson Zaharias.
Customer Reviews:
Babe Didrikson Zaharias.......2003-03-18
Babe Didrikson Zaharias: The making of a champion, by Russell Freedman. This book was great. It doesn't just tell about her adult life; it also talks about how she got started, like when she was young. She was always the tomboy type until she was in her twenties. As she got older, she had to be the center of all the attention. To tell you the truth, she was always full of herself, which wasn't always a good thing. Babe participated in almost every sport that a woman could do. She was good at every one of them, too. She turned professional in track and field, basketball, and golf. I recommend this book to any girl who loves to compete in sports. I really didn't have a role model until I read this book!
Interesting and Compelling.......2000-05-20
This book is an interesting, yet honest look at the life of Babe Didrikson Zaharias. There are parts of the book that are necessarily a bit dry, e.g., the explanation of how and why she tried to regain her amateur status after playing as a professional. Most of the book, however, does an excellent job of getting the reader to feel her seemingly boundless energy and determination. It also does a good job of portraying the limitations of the era on female athletes. It doesn't make them into tragedies, but it does point out that they were more "hurdles" that Babe had to overcome.
For those interested in biographies of famous women, this book and Freedman's book about Eleanor Roosevelt are both excellent additions to the young adult library.
A 5 star book: suspenseful and exciting!.......2000-05-17
When asked if there was something she didn't play, Babe replied smiling: "dolls!" This intriguing book by Russell Freedman lets you in on the tragic and wonderful secrets in Babe Didrikson Zaharias's life. From hurdling her neighbor's bushes to winning world-wide golf tournaments, Babe's extraordinary life captures all young readers! How good can Babe get? This wonderful story tells it all with excitement and suspense. Enjoy your reading!

Greatest Female Athlete of the Half-Century.......2001-02-28
Wakeman uses many of the same resources and photographs as the Freedman biography, Babe Didrikson Zaharias: The Making of a Champion. Though she adds little new information about one of the greatest women athletes of the world, she writes competently and begins with the 1932 Olympics at which Babe won two gold medals for the javelin throw and the 80-meter hurdles, and a silver medal in the high jump. Mastering nearly every sport she attempted including basketball, baseball, and bowling, Babe's career continued as an amateur and professional golfer until it tragically ended with her death at age 45. Because her fiercely competitive spirit and swaggering self-confidence was unusual in a woman during the first half of the 20th century, Babe became a legend in sports, paving the way for future women athletes. This is a useful addition to sports biographies and women's history.

Extraordinary Women Athletes (Extraordinary People)
ASIN: 1573241946 |
Book Description
A gold medal Olympian, Babe Didrikson, recently rated by ESPN as one of the top ten athletes of the twentieth century, excelled at every sport she tried: running, jumping, javelin throwing, swimming, basketball, tennis, golf, and baseball. Gifted and controversial, Babe's athletic prowess and personality took the country by storm from the 1930s to the 1950s. From Texas tomboy to sports superstar, Babe set the bar for every female athlete who would follow her and opened the world's eyes to what one dedicated woman can achieve. Author Susan E. Cayleff, whose adult biography of Babe Didrikson was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, now brings the rousing true-life story of Babe to today's young women.
Customer Reviews:
BABE The Babe.......2005-03-02
Written on a sophomoric level, this brief biography of Babe centers on the highlights of her life but ignores Babe's life-long emotional roller-coaster. After reading this book, you may think Babe enjoyed her life as an outcast and her distinctive masculine character was merely a promotion gimmick; that her `tomboy' nature disappeared when her sexual identity was questioned. It completely ignores the many questions about her sexual ambiguity and promotes her marriage to George Zaharias as the real thing. If it was a `for real' marriage, why did George promote constant `out-of-town' excursions, rarely joining her, seemingly content to be separated for long time periods? This book is like a biography written about pre-AIDS Rock Hudson or Liberace. It does not examine the real Babe .... a gifted athletic ahead of her time who tried to fit in. Sports probably kept her sane. This book does not tell you who the Babe is or what she was up to; only what she achieved.
Fun, readable & informative for young and old alike.......2000-10-21
I loved reading about this gregarious and complicated athlete. This is a biography intended for young adults, but everyone will like it. Cayleff's original adult biography says she spent ten years researching Babe's life, interviewing surviving family and friends, etc., so her story is the real thing. It's also an important story, since she was the only female mentioned in the top 10 of "the greatest 20th century athletes" lists by ESPN, etc.
I particularly enjoyed how Babe had a talented story-telling "changeling" quality to remake herself when she wasn't getting what she wanted. She was a physically strong "Texas tomboy" trying to make it in a time and place that liked girly-girl athletes.
What struck me most was the irony that her tombstone reads "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game," yet Babe always said "I don't see any point in playing if I don't win. Do you?" She had a few different images going for her, and she used all the tricks!
Get it; I'm assigning it to my community college students to learn about both women and American culture in the 30s-50s. They'll enjoy reading it while learning.
Yes, the greatest athlete..........2000-08-22
Susan Cayleff, presents the factual information in a clear and comprehensive manner. It is unfortunate that the life of Babe, reads like a sophmoric book report.

Great for Classroom Use.......2002-05-21
As a teacher, I can say that this book holds the attention of young readers easily. It stimulates lots of classroom discussion about Babe's era and lends itself well to math lessons in measurement, problem-solving, time-lines, and even setting up your own Olympic Games!! Every elementary school library should have a copy or two.
Babe Didrikson Zaharias - An American Dream.......2000-05-01
We thought that the book was very historical and learned aboutsomeone we had never heard of before. The beginning of the book madeus want to read on. We think that it is a good children's book, andwe think that all schools should have these books to read to the children. It shows good examples, like you can be anything that you want to be if you try. We are looking forward to the next in the series.

Product Description
She was brash. She was bold. She tormented her opponents by predicting she'd win every game, event or match she was in. The she backed up her boast with win after win. But success didn't come easily for "Babe" Zaharias. Growing up in a poor family, she worked in a factory sewing burlap bags for a penny a piece. She loved sports at a time when girls were not supposed to take sports seriously. And though kids at her school cheered her team's victories, they laughed at Babe's "boyish" ways. Babe was both the hero and the outcast. Things didn't get better as Babe grew older. She was named All American in basketball, won Olympic Medals in track and field, and became a champion golfer. But for many years, Babe had to fight to play her game and live her life her own way. Through it all Babe held her head high. In the end, she silenced her critics and won the admiration of millions of fans. Outcast and Hero shows how in the process, Babe paved the way so generations of girls and women that followed her can play the games they want to play and be the persons they want to be.

Customer Reviews:
Ever wonder what your name says about you?.......2007-07-04
Bought this book because my friend had it and I liked it. I think it's great to just read for fun and share with friends. The book has 3 different interpretations of your name. I find the last intepretation to be the most accurate and my friends agree. Just a nice pass time.
Great gift idea - inside and out!.......2007-06-18
I have had this book for many years now, and it is frayed and ripped for all of my friends/co-workers/family making copies for themselves. For Christmas one year I framed each of the names on pretty stationary paper and gave it as gifts to my friends. Last year I made some for a few co-worker's baby rooms. I love the definitions and everyone I have spoke to says it fits them to a T! I do wish they would extend it and bring it back with a revised version with more updated names as well, but it is pretty easy to do the interpretations step-by-step in the book.
The Hidden Truth of Your Name.......2007-05-23
I did not order that book. I am positive.
Excellent Resource on Names.......2006-07-22
Most of us can probably relate to having the same experience with people of the same name - for example maybe every Kelly you've met has been very kind. Names have their own associated energy and are part of why we have certain personalities. This book does an excellent job of explaining why names have these characteristics.
The book also goes into a number of historical ways names are interpreted and gives tools to help interpret names in general. The book does not list every name, it would be impossible, but the foundation it provides is excellent. The descriptions of the names included in the book seem pretty insightful and there are a fair number of names in there. I was really impressed with the explanation of how names have meaning but I like to know how things work. If you just want a huge list of names with no background on why names have meaning then other books may be better.
I highly recommend this book for those interested in the topic. It's much better than "The Secret Meaning of Names", which I found incredibly disappointing and ended up returning.
its a fun and entertaining book...........2006-03-25
This book is a cool book. It was fun and entertaining to read. I found my name in it. And i didnt expect to since my name is soo old fashioned and not so popular. It gave me alot of insight into well...me. I enjoyed reading names of my family in it and learning things about them that i am sure they dont even know. I would reccommend this book as a form of entertainment.

Customer Reviews:
A pleasing followup!.......2007-07-14
After reading "Path of Fate," this book answered my need for more of Resil. I loved this book as much as I loved the first one.
The continuation of the characters and their growth was exciting. The information about the sorcerers and Resil's struggle with evil was exciting! I would read this book again even if the author decided to put more information in it to make the pages twice as long. Usually the quality of detail is only necessary but it takes a GREAT author to write a both qualitative and quantitative, exciting novel.
Each book is different but it all ties together to form a wonderfully written trilogy.
This is a true Science Fiction/Fantasy novel and a series that I will re-read again.
Awesome read!!!.......2007-02-09
This book was some amazing fantasy. You MUST read "Path of Fate" first or you'll definitely be lost though.
It started out slow at first and I had to re-orient myself with the characters, but after the first few chapters the storyline became clearer and I really got into it.
There are some graphic torture scenes and therefore I would not call this a child's fantasy book. On the other hand, the characters are memorable, likeable (or detestable), and extremely believeable. I'm very excited to read the third book in the series.
Better than the first.......2006-03-10
This one progressed well from the first and the sinister side of political intrigue reared it's ugly head. She has several unpleasant choices ahead of her and ultimately works it out. Great read and a good plot.
**A book I would also recommend is The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. This, the first installment of The Morcyth Saga is a great beginning for a new author. Battles, magic, gods, secret passages and intrigue, all the elements of a classic epic fantasy! Any fantasy reader will enjoy it
A Complicated Path.......2005-02-15
The problem in writing a trilogy is the second book. It is one that has to provide enough complications to warrant a third book, and yet do so without confusing the reader, at the same time as keeping the reader's interest. Some writers fail to do this well, which really indicates that the book should be in two parts, not three. (Sean Russell's recent trilogy really should have just been two books rather than three.)
However, Path of Honor manages to keep the reader's interest. It also provides enough intrigue to show that this story warrants three books, and will therefore make a strong trilogy. The characterisation could be made a little stronger, but overall this is a minor weakness in the novel.
The story IS complicated, but that is necessary in order to develop the entire tale.
Too much unnecessary detail.......2005-01-26
After reading "Path of Fate", I had high hopes for this new book. "Path of Fate" presented a coherent picture of a well-created world. Sadly, in the new book, the author felt it necessary to introduce far too many new plot devices and too wide a range of new characters. Why did we need the other world, from which two of the characters come? Why a rift between two worlds? [done before, better] Where did the coal drake appear from? [seems to be a plot device to handle a couple of rough patches in the plot] Why introduce the land of Scallas and the sorcerers? [unnecessary extra detail] Why has the Lady withdrawn her presence from Kodu Riik? [given that her presence is vital to the concept of the ahalad-kaaslane] Why did we need the graphic descriptions of torture? [we certainly would have got the picture that the bad guy was bad without such extensive graphic descriptions] And why oh why are all the names so confusing? [I think especially that it was a mistake to use a term as convoluted and hard to pronounce as "ahalad-kaaslane" for the key concept]
The most distressing thing about the book is that it doesn't finish. It leaves you in mid-plot, with the promise of a new book to come out next year. I think a lot of extraneous material could have been excised from this book, the plot tightened up, and the story finished within the page count provided.
It is said that everyone has a book in them. For this author that book was "Path of Fate". To produce more than one good book requires a lot of work. I trust that the third book will be an improvement on this second one.

Book Description
Gregorian chant was the dominant liturgical music of the medieval period, from the time it was adopted by Charlemagne's court in the eighth century; but for centuries afterwards it competed with other musical traditions, local repertories from the great centres of Rome, Milan, Ravenna, Benevento, Toledo, Constantinople, Jerusalem, and Kievan Rus, and comparative study of these chant traditions can tell us much about music, liturgy, literacy and culture a thousand years ago. This is the first book-length work to look at the issues in a global, comprehensive way, in the manner of the work of Kenneth Levy, the leading exponent of comparative chant studies. It covers the four most fruitful approaches for investigators: the creation and transmission of chant texts, based on the psalms and other sources, and their assemblage into liturgical books; the analysis and comparison of musical modes and scales; the uses of neumatic notation for writing down melodies, and the differences wrought by developmental changes and notational reforms over the centuries; and the use of case studies, in which the many variations in a specific text or melody are traced over time and geographical distance. The book is therefore of profound importance for historians of medieval music or religion - Western, Byzantine, or Slavonic - and for anyone interested in issues of orality and writing in the transmission of culture.PETER JEFFERY is Professor of Music History, Princeton University. Contributors: JAMES W. McKINNON, MARGOT FASSLER, MICHEL HUGLO, NICOLAS SCHIDLOVSKY, KEITH FALCONER, PETER JEFFERY, DAVID G. HUGHES, SYSSE GUDRUN ENGBERG, CHARLES M. ATKINSON, MILOS VELIMIROVIC, JORGEN RAASTED+, RUTH STEINER, DIMITRIJE STEFANOVIC, ALEJANDRO PLANCHART.
