Book Description
This book covers the fundamentals of conventional transmission electron microscopy (CTEM) as applied to crystalline solids. In addition to including a large selection of worked examples and homework problems, the volume is accompanied by a supplementary website (http://ctem.web.cmu.edu/) containing interactive modules and over 30,000 lines of free Fortran 90 source code. The work is based on a lecture course given by Marc De Graef in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University.
Download Description
This book covers the fundamentals of conventional transmission electron microscopy (CTEM) as applied to crystalline solids. Emphasis is on the experimental and computational methods used to quantify and analyze CTEM observations. A supplementary website containing interactive modules and free Fortran source code accompanies the text. The book starts with the basics of crystallography and quantum mechanics providing a sound mathematical footing for the rest of the text. The next section deals with the microscope itself, describing the various components in terms of the underlying theory. The second half of the book focuses on the dynamical theory of electron scattering in solids including its applications to perfect and defective crystals, electron diffraction and phase contrast techniques. Based on a lecture course given by the author in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, the book is ideal for graduate students as well as researchers new to the field.

Wonderful Introduction to Transmission Electron Microscopy.......2007-02-16
For my taste, this book is the best introduction to Transmission Electron Microscopy that I have read. It is written at a higher level than Williams and Carter. This book is probably best suited to students with a B.S. in Physics. At the very least one should have benefited from a two semester undergraduate course on Modern Physics (including such things as solving the Schrodinger Equation for the Hydrogen atom) before tackling this book. I wish that a book like this had been out thirty years ago when I started learning TEM! This book does a very good job on two-beam theory and has truly wonderful dispersion surface diagrams.
Excellent.......2003-08-21
I took Prof. de Graef's class at CMU in 2001, and we used pre-prints of this text. Even in that mostly-finished form, it was excellent. It's only improved now that I have the finished, published form.
Although I found the mathematical formalism that makes up the middle of this book excessive, it is important for people who will be modelling TEM experiments. The remainder of the book, on TEM basics, operation, and image/SADP interpretation, are all excellent.
This book is an excellent CTEM text.

Customer Reviews:
Practical Hapkido Textbook.......2006-01-30
Excellent Hap Ki Do book. I'm a taekwondo'er and found this book very easy to understand with big clear pictures for illustration. I've purchased all three of Master Choe's HKD books and found a certain amount of redundancy in the techniques, but highly recommend all three any way. I originally found one of these in the library and realized right away that these books were the best I've found.
IHF style GM MYONG JAE NAM.......2003-10-06
Looks a lot like his work. Good book. Should give credit where it is due however.
Great Text Book Ecspecially for beginners.......2001-09-13
As a beginner in hapkido i would recommend this book for others that are also interested in starting hapkido. This book offers step by step pictures on how to execute kicks and basic self defense, and plus it is very short on words which makes it interesting and easy to learn techniques.
Good Intro to Hapkido.......2000-10-17
This is the book to start with for Hapkido. Master Choe's other book (Hap Ki Do - The Korean Art of Self Defense) focuses mainly on joint locks and takedows and how they can be varied from different grabs. This book however, shows a variety of striking techniques and counters in addition to the joint locks. Also, more realistic situations and the effective techniques are presented here. Although both books are lacking in text they are definitely worth getting as excellent references.
Practical Hapkido Textbook.......1999-12-06
This is an excellent reference book for anyone starting in hapkido. The pictures are detailed and easy to do. I really enjoyed working through is book.

Good Resource.......2005-10-14
I think this book does a great job of presenting an overview of the self defense techniques and the overall philosophy of Hapkido. I also like the history of hapkido that is presented in this book. It does a good job of providing the reader with a deeper understanding of the art.
This book is a good resource and a good addition to anyone's self defense library.
Not in-depth, but good........2005-10-10
This very thin book covers some good variations on locks & throws as well as some interesting self-defense options. The information is a good supplement if you already have a strong foundation in these types martial arts techniques.
A very big drawback is that the sequential pictures are not clear at all, contrary to what is stated in the editorial review. Fortunately the instructions of each technique should suffice, but only if you are familiar with the type of technique presented.
Understandably Good.......2003-10-09
As one of the few practitioners of Hapkido in Hong Kong I have read Scott Shaw's articles on Hapkido in magazines like Black Belt and Taekwondo Times for years. So, it was no surpirse to me when I picked up this book that I found it to be well put together and a great source of information on this advanced system of self-defense. There are two things I really like about this book. The first is the presentation of the true history of Hapkdio. The second is that each self-defense technique is clearly and completely described. This book is a great source of reference on Hapkido. RECOMMENDED.
Hapkido is Self Defense.......2002-09-03
This is a straight to the point book on Hapkido Self Defense. No nonsense, just straight-ahead techniques. Recommended!
Excellent Hapkido Self Defense Text Book.......2002-06-17
Having practice the martial arts for over ten years, I find this book to be an excellent resource for both the Korean martial art of hapkido and self defense. The history section is great. The ki section is very interesting. The self defense section is very detailed and teaches true hapkido. This book is a necessary addition to anyone library. Recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Early, important work.......2006-12-06
I agree with James Lee that the people who criticize this book don't understand its significance. It was one of the first books out in English on Hapkido, and so of course it presents the style's basic techniques in a non-technical and easy to understand way. At the time few people knew what Hapkido was, and O'Hara's book was designed as a basic intro to the art, not a definitive text. The book is brief and could have been longer, to be sure, but that's what further volumes are for.
I also was fortunate enough once to visit Master Han's studio in Los Angeles back in the early 70s and had a chance to observe his class, and see one of his black belts teach, and they were practicing the same basics presented in this book.
Of course, with the easy availability of inexpensive videos these days, older books like this are less important than they were at the time, since you can learn so much more by watching the techniques in action. But for its time, this was a pioneering effort and introduced the art of Hapkido to many people for the first time.
Great Place to Start.......2006-06-29
As a Hapkido practitioner for over twenty years, this was the first book I purchased on the subject. It is written by one of the most respected masters of the art in the world and it presents the essential elements of this style in a direct and easy to understand format.
People who have criticized this book do not understand the essential importance of the basics in Hapkido. This is what this book presents, the essential basics, which all of the advanced techniques of Hapkido are based upon.
This book is a must for any library on Hapkido.
The first significant book on hapkido available in English.......2004-09-26
I think the buyer of this book should take into consideration that this was the first significant book published on the subject of Korean Hapkido in English. Joon M Lee also published in the 1970s but few people saw his 2 books as they never became really popular.
There now exist more extensive books of worth by Myung Kwang-Sik and Kimm He-Young but this book by Master Han provided those wishing to learn more about the art with a good overview of hapkido's general tactics and range of techniques performed by a true master.
I think it is worthwhile because it features a truly great teacher performing the basics of the art.
Too simplistic, but OK for basics.......2004-02-04
Some folks have accused this book of being too close to Tae Kwon Do; that's ok, because most Hapkido books I've seen look too much like aikijutsu, with limited attention to strikes. For the record, this book has a format similar to any Ohara Publications martial art book put out at the time. It starts with a history-philosophy section that isn't given hardly enough attention, then goes into some basic excersises, including deep breathing excersises and several stretch, push-up and sit-up variations. The most basic of strikes are then covered, and include the standard punch, backfist, knife-hand strikes, and elbows. The too-short blocking chapter is next, followed by kicks, both beginning and advanced. Then there are defenses shown against the punch and different types of kicks, which is OK in and of itself, followed by a self-defense chapter, where the only real locking techniques are shown. The last page shows where different pressure points are on the body, but it's just a grey silouette with black dots on it. The only person I'd recomend this book to is someone with little or no martial arts training, but then follow it with the warning to remember that these are only basic techniques, and not really the "art" of Hapkido.
What this book really is.......2003-02-09
I read most of the reviews here and thought I should share my own perspective.
This book is an excellent introduction to Hapkido written by the best authority on the subject. You are not going to get your black belt by reading this book. If you are already a black belt, you may find this book or any other book on another martial arts philosophy somewhat simplistic.
This book on the other hand introduces you to the philosophy of Hapkido and some of the key components of it. It would help you understand Hapkido better and will in fact show you the eclectic nature of it. I found it very helpful and recommend it to those who are not in love with any one style and have an open mind and yearn for learning.

Book Description
The Korean Art of Self Defense. A fully illustrated book on the Martial Art of Hap Ki Do. Filled with over 400 photographs. Designed to show Hap Ki Do in a easy to follow step by step method for the beginner. Included are close-up photos of various wristlocks, arrows to show certain steps and minimal wording on the steps, to make this book very easy to follow. The large format (8.5 x 11) also makes this book easy to read and handle.
The Hap Ki Do practitioner diverts or suppresses an attackers flow of energy peacefully, this diversion allows him to use the attackers power against himself leading to the attacker's defeat. Through the use of certain skeletal joints and pressure points, very little strength is needed to overcome an opponent.
Customer Reviews:
Hap Ki DO by Master Choe.......2006-11-01
A complete waste of money. Way too basic to learn anything new for anyone that has even minimal experience in Hapkido. And some of the pictures were poorly taken and made it hard to see the grip applied throughout the entire technique. I looked at this book for all of MAYBE 5 minutes!
great for reference.......2006-05-25
I would say if you are new to Hapkido, or looking maby to join a class then this book is a must. I just started several months I use it as a reference. The one thing you will find about Hapkido is there are slight varations fom school to school. The one thing I do recomened is if you are going at a school look at what federation your school belongs to. Just happends my school belongs to this association. I gave this a five rating for couple reasons. The pictures, directions are easy to follow, great if you want to have a reference,or you want to get a friend willing let to practice. The one negative I did find on this book was that it should went over breaking falls better. There isn't to many Hapkido books out there good as this! IT was money well spent, I am giving it ***** !
Hap Ki Do: The Korean Art of Self Defense.......2006-01-30
Excellent Hap Ki Do book. I'm a taekwondo'er and found this book very easy to understand with big clear pictures for illustration. I've purchased all three of Master Choe's HKD books and found a certain amount of redundancy in the techniques, but highly recommend all three any way. I originally found one of these in the library and realized right away that these books were the best I've found.
Not for Beginners.......2000-10-17
This book is straight to the point on joint locks and take downs. The book is broken down into chapters by how the joint is locked with varying grabs and attacks. One must already have good control and be familiar with stretching, striking and falling before applying this text. Master Choe's other book (Practical Hapkido Textbook) is a better introduction and includes some striking and falling techniques.
Good for beginners.......2000-02-05
This book is excellent for those just beginning Hapkido or are at least low ranking. Advanced Hapkido practitioners would not find it very useful. The photographs are excellent in showing proper hand position and body movements. However, the section on breaking falls is incomplete. The author fails to describe or show proper body positioning for left side, right side, back, and front falls; he only shows the rolling fall. Anyone interested in martial arts should learn in a Dojang with a competent instructor, not from a book. Use this book to supplement your study of Hapkido, not as your only source. With that in mind, I would definately recommend this book.

Excellant book on self-defence.......1998-10-31
This book gives a complete overview of hapkido basics as well as a total self-defense course that can be used with ANY martial art system. I bought my copy in 1979 and at the time it was the best book on the market. It's a good resource for self-defence skills for men and women. Applications cover punches, grabs, clubs and dis-advantaged positions. Plenty of pictures to show each technique. Well worth getting for your collection, if you can find a copy.

Customer Reviews:
Best college life handbook.......2007-09-12
I got this book back when I was in college and I'm still amazed at the quality and range of information in here. Too many people focus solely on the academics in college without thinking about all the other life questions that come with it: living independently or with a roommate, managing time, dealing with health issues and sexuality, and finding a community. This book provides a wonderful guide that I would give to any woman in college. If only there were an update!
a gift I won't give.......2006-12-13
I purchased this book for my granddaughter who will soon be 18 and heading off to college. After looking it over, I can't give her this book. It has very liberal ideas, and seems like it gives the okay to taking drugs, as long as you don't overdue. It spends a lot time on sexuallity including what to do if you get pregnant and how to get an abortion. I will not be giving this book to my granddaughter--it is going in the trash.
Great Seller!.......2006-08-25

No problems!
Very Good ;).......2006-08-17
This book went very in-depth into issues specifically relating to women in college, not just the token "anorexia" or "bulimia" sections that are found in most general college survival books. Much appreciated.
Terrific book, but it needs an update..........2006-06-12
I received this book when I started college in 1997, and found it to be an indispensable resource that still occupies a space on my shelf. It is packed with excellent tips for academic success, time and money management, safety, health, and self-esteem issues - most of which are timeless and still relevant today. I highly recommend it as a "life guide" to any college-bound woman.
I gave this book to a young woman I know who will be entering college in the fall of 2006, and was astonished to find that it has not been updated in the more than 10 years since its publication. When it was originally written, the internet was just making its debut on campuses. The College Woman's Handbook is sorely in need of an update on issues like online privacy, cyber-stalking, and identity theft. There have also been numerous innovations in birth control since this book was published.
The authors have long since graduated, and have probably moved on to other pursuits outside of the academic sphere. I would suggest that they hand the College Woman's Handbook off to a fresh group of capable young women who can update it for the challenges and innovations of a new decade.

Book Description
David Bach has a plan to help you live and finish rich—no matter where you start
So you feel like you’ve started late?
You are not alone.
What if I told you that right now as you flip through this book, 70% of the people in the store with you are living paycheck to paycheck?
What if I told you that the man browsing the aisle to your left owes more than $8,000 in credit card debt? And the woman on your right has less than $1,000 in savings?
See? You’re really not alone.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of people who’ve saved too little and borrowed too much will never catch up financially. Why? Because they don’t know how.
You can start late and finish rich—but you need a plan.
This book contains the plan. It’s inspiring, easy to follow, and is based on proven financial principles. Building a secure financial future for yourself isn’t something you can do overnight. It will take time and it will take work. But you can do it.
I know. I’ve helped millions of people get their financial lives together—and I can help you. Spend a few hours with me—and let me challenge you. Give me a chance to become your coach.
Just because you started late doesn’t mean you are doomed to an uncertain future. Whether you’re in your thirties, forties, fifties, or beyond, there is still time to turn things around. It’s never too late to live and finish rich. All it takes is the decision to start.

finish rich irrespective of your age.......2007-10-10
Start Late, Finish Rich makes fine reading - some of its five parts more fascinating than others. The first part is about getting started - illuminating. Part 2 deals with how a starter can avoid, reduce, and stay away from ruinous spending behavior. It is followed by a discussion on saving for investment in Part 3. The book is rather topical in the fourth part, and here some of its subject matter such as making money from eBay (Chapter 6) and from real estate (Chapter 20) appears to be overdone. However, the last section of the book consists of life-affirming chapters on giving, living rich, and even doing it all for the future (your children). Recommended highly.

great for any age!.......2007-09-27
Everyone should read this book who is over 30! Bach gives a great blueprint for achieving financial independence. Read "The Instant Millionaire" also.
Great Advice.......2007-09-26
The book is well written and offers practical advice for anyone serious about getting their finances focused on their future. The book isn't enough to get you to the goal but is a fabulous starting point for the journey. I plan to by other books by David Bach.
Good First Push to Wealth.......2007-09-21
David Bach is a good, not great, financial advisor. That being said, this book could just as easily have been yellow and black and been named "Wealth for Dummies." That is NOT a condemnation! This is a perfect starting point for those that want to get on the way to financial freedom. He speaks the truth, easily understood. Further reading will be needed AFTER you put his concepts into ACTION!!!
BUY IT!
A Good Section on Real Estate.......2007-09-01
As someone who buys fix-up houses and rents them out, I read with interest Chapter 19 "Get Rich Investing in Real Estate ... On the Weekend." I think that the author describes, in a condensed form, exactly what anyone can do to be successful in real estate.
In my opinion, the two safest ways to get into real estate, and the author describes each technique, are: 1) buy a home, rent it, then do it again, and/or 2) buy a home, live in it 2 years, then sell it without paying any federal taxes using the "homeowner's tax break." Over the past six years, my wife and I have used both techniques. We have several properties that we keep as rental properties and provide us with cash flow. In addition, we also buy houses in need of repair with the intention of selling them and utilizing the "homeowners tax break" to pay no federal taxes.
My wife and I didn't sock away much money for retirement, but with our rental houses, we have a flow of income that will last as long as we keep the houses. Many people stay away from rental properties because they don't want to deal with renters. However, with practice anything is easy, including dealing with renters, and the rewards far outweigh the difficulties.
If you really don't want to deal with renters, just use technique #2, where you buy and sell every two years. I like to say that technique #2 is for people who wear both a belt and suspenders, they really like to play it safe.
Oveall, I thought the book was pretty good, and I especially recommend the sections on real estate investing.

An Inspirational Read.......2007-09-25
Thank you Mr. Bach for a great book that should be inspiring millions. Too many people fall into crowd "enjoying" the latte factor and then find themselves facing bankruptcy. I've known quite a few.
This book belongs in the hands of every college senior and should perhaps be required high school reading as well. Enjoyed it thoroughly, finding this both entertaining and instructional. I picked up a few tips, discovered nonessentials in my own budget and now I'm headed for financial freedom. Can you give me Amen brother?
