Book Description
This third revised edition is written without much technical jargon. It tells how fossils are classified, how to collect, preserve, and mount specimens. Gives collecting sites for each state, where exhibits are found, how to obtain geological publications, and where there are paleontological libraries.

The author of The Warren Buffett Way gets behind the steering wheel of professional stock car racing--NASCAR, to be exact--making a few gushing laps around the track of America's largest and fastest-growing spectator sport. Although filled with plenty of local color, The NASCAR Way primarily focuses on the phenomenal financial success of a sport that began in the tiny, dirt-road hamlets of Dixie. Originally a way for moonshine runners to compete against each other by the light of day in informal--and legal--settings, stock car racing was organized by "Big Bill" France in the late 1940s under the aegis of NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) but soon moved to the larger, asphalt tracks of today. A half-century after NASCAR's inception, the sport boasts lucrative corporate sponsorship, growing cable TV exposure, and fan loyalty to rival--if not surpass--that of every other professional sports organization. While the bottom line ultimately turns Hagstrom's crank more than the personality of the sport itself, the author still has fun with his subject: "Stock car drivers do things in cars that would make the rest of us faint. Try to imagine driving 100 miles an hour, then 120, then 160. Imagine keeping up that pace for three and a half hours.... Now imagine forty-one other cars around you, all doing the same thing, just inches away from you, scraping against the side of your car and nudging your bumper as they try to pass you. And you can never slack off."

Great insight into what drives the sport.......2000-08-28
Before this book, my opinion of the sport ranked up there with my opinion of most politicians. However, a recent slight interest prompted me to buy it. I read it quickly and truly enjoyed it. Not only does it offer great insight into what drives the sport, but it gives a new fan (or someone with slight curiousity) an incredible appreciation of the sport, its athletes, the fans, and the people behind the scenes. After this book, I am a NASCAR fan.
An Inside View of NASCAR.......2000-03-11
I'm not a racing fan, but I am a person who enjoys a good book with a great story. In The NASCAR Way, Robert Hagstrom takes the reader into every facet of the sports organization that is NASCAR. If you have an appreciation for the sport, this will be a great book for you, if not, you like me may gain an appreciation of both the sport and the NASCAR way of doing things. How this empire rose from a few bootleggers engaging in afternoon challenges to a multi-billion dollar industry is fascinating. Perhaps the most fascinating of all is the way this business works together at every level, from upper management, to track personnel, to racing teams and corporate sponsors, to the huge retail business, to loyal fans that fuel the entire machine with their support.
I highly recommend The NASCAR Way, I found it to be both enjoyable and a real learning experience.

Fantastic Enlightenment.......1999-11-27
The book was very informative on the financial and business demands of creating this great sport. It points out the France's dedication and perserverance to a business and how it became successful. After reading the book you can see why the sport has become a boardroom discussion with a lot of Fortune 500 firms as well as the Little Guys! I couldn't put it down.
Not just for racing fans.......1999-10-13
The NASCAR Way is the most informative book I've found on NASCAR racing as an industry. The insight that Hagstrom provides the reader on the moral values that started all, to the marketing saavy that continues to drive the business is invaluable not only to the NASCAR fan wanting to know more, but to anyone in any business looking for a model to grow their company by. The reader that is not a NASCAR fan will be hooked before finishing the book, and the casual fan will become an expert on what goes on in the behind-the-scenes world of racing. A must for every entrepreneur and NASCAR fan alike.

Hard to read but packed with information.......2007-07-16
There is a lot of information in this book, most of which is very interesting and potentially useful. So long as I think of this as a 'reference book' and not a manual or how-to, I'm happy with my purchase of it.
The book's main problem is in presentation. It is a compilation of publication from other sources, primarily the US government. As such the quality of each section varies greatly in age, usability, and legibility. Really, this book should come with a magnifying glass as several sections have been reduced in size to accommodate the format and are made functionally illegible.
In short, if you are looking for a book to tell you how to become 'Self-Reliant', this book isn't going to help you much. If you are approaching self-reliance and need a book to fill in some knowledge gaps, then it is a valuable resource
The one book you need at the end of the world.......2005-03-09
While a little dry this book had a LOT of good information. Realistically it had too much information. A LOT of information that any highschool graduate will know.
However, if the entire world social structure collapses this is the one book you would need to home school your kids.
A lot of information, "if" you can read it!.......2005-02-26
The first thing I noticed about this book was the terribly small print. I have 20/15 vision (better than 20/20) and even I considered using a magnifying glass to read this book! I bought this book mainly because I am preparing to build my own house and I will be doing 99% of the labor myself. And because of this, I concentrated mainly on sections of this book that are dedicated to home construction, masonry, brickwork, etc.
I found a lot of usefull information about building a house. But I would not advise using this book as a "stand alone" guide for home construction. However I do highly recommend this book as a companion reference on the subject. I especially enjoyed the section on "before you build", which pointed out a lot of design details that I will incorporate in my own floor plan.
I would have given the book 5 stars for overall content. But the small print still irritates me and is worthy of taking away 1 star on its own. And the lack of detailed instructions on certain key topics can be annoying at times. So a half star loss there.
Probably not what you're expecting.......2005-02-18
...at least it wasn't what I was expecting. The title, "The Big Book of Self-Reliant Living" lead me to believe that it was a handbook for living off the land. However, when it arrived I was dismayed to find that the "health" section did not contain home remedies or herbal medicine, but 40 pages (40 pages!!) of lists of the nutritional value of foods. Who has time to count calories on a farm? Furthermore, the "health" section had oodles of detailed information on diagnosing a wide variety of cancers and chronic diseases. I found this to be frustratingly unhelpful information. The bizarre material can be perfectly illustrated by the bee-keeping page. It instructs the reader to buy factory made hives, and to have a bee-keeper bring you bees. Self-reliant my foot. So, in summary: if you are a hypochondriac who lives in a city and you want a book with tips on environment-friendly heating methods, instructions for removing stains from clothing, money saving ideas for the grocery store or a chart of toy dog breeds, then please contact me because I have the book for you!
More than you would expect.......2004-04-15
I really do not know where to start with this book. I am a former executive that left that world behind 2 years ago. I am currently working towards more self-reliant living and ways to cut down on money that leaves my driveway. This book will tell you how to do everything from raising little farm animals, to prepping and planting a garden, selecting an appropriate water heater, positioning your new home to take advantage of shade in reducing costs for heating & cooling, building a bench, construction techniques (large and small), home remedies (including making cleaning supplies), country cooking (with numerous recipes and substitutions), to selecting land. There is just too much in this book to cover everything. In every section it gives you the good and the bad. Unlike other books of this type, it does not contain radical, anti-anything, just hard facts, and common sense suggestions.
Examples are: types of solar power, advantages/disadvantages of each, and their ROI (some of which are years [up to 25] to recoup the costs); raising sheep correctly, ensuring that you can rotate pastures to prevent diseases that I haven't heard of since I was in vet school; and, not raising turkeys where you will have animal A or B. Just good stuff!!
I know that many people my age (mid-30s) are realizing that debt is too easy, and we need to take responsibility for ourselves. This book will give you the tools you need, the rest is up to you.
I have purchased a dozen copies of this book so far, to give to people that really want to live self-reliantly, or that just want help in making informed decisions to become a little self-reliant. This book can be useful anywhere for most of it; however, unlike other books that contain information on gardening and small-scale farming, this book covers the southeastern US like a blanket in regards to winter grazing and feeding for animals, and planting times.
I just cannot say enough about this book. This will be the best money you spend on a library of books...it is large, small print, and packed with information, without being radical like other books...its just good, common sense.

adequate for background, but I wouldn't take it with me (again).......2007-09-30
All of the eyecandy we expect from eyewitness guides. Some once-over-lightly background (not what I'd call in-depth) - most useful, from this perspective, as a decision tool before you've decided to go. Look elsewhere for real help in planning.
Eyewitness Travel Guides: Sweden.......2007-04-07
This guide is the best I've found. Descriptions are very clear. Myriad photos and illustrations give a real advance tour of the country. Maps are excellent. The transportation section clarifies potentially confusing directions for trains, roads, ferries. There's an excellent word list (with pronunciation) in back of the book. Outlined by provinces, it's easy to tell the sort of towns one might want to visit. Our time will be limited, so we will need to plan our trip to Sweden carefully. This book is a big help.
Best travel guide there is.......2007-01-09
No matter where you wander, the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides are the best guides to introduce you to a region. Color illustrations, great maps, with a focus on really neat things to do and places to see. This one is no exception. Although we are frequent visitors to Sweden (bought this as a gift), we still found much that was new and fascinating in it.
Loved the pictures! Loved the info!.......2005-08-11
I usually like Eyewitness Travel Guides, and this "Sweden" issue was also as useful as the others I have owned. I am glad Stockholm has its own chapter and in great detail. The scenery pictures are nice, and graphics explaining detailed floor plans of buildings and museums are very useful. The pictures alone are enough to make me want to go there! I also like the Traveler's Needs section, especially the accomodation divided in categories of location and price. Although accomodation nowadays is easy to find from the internet, Eyewitness has saved me a lot of precious time trying to compare each hotel between websites. I would recommend anyone who is going to Sweden to get this book. You will get all the information you need, and more!

Informative, thorough and entertaining in the bargain!.......2007-08-04
I'm not a seasoned or jaded traveler ... yet! So a comprehensive travel guide is critical to my preparation for a trip and a great way of post-filling information and details into some of the holes or places that I might have missed or had to rush through when I was actually on the trip. Along with photographs and trip journals, they're also a wonderful way to resurrect detailed memories of a trip long after you've returned home.
Eyewitness Travel Guides seem to have the market beat by a long margin! That's not to say that Lonely Planet, Frommer, Michelin or the Blue and Green Guides miss the mark entirely but the Eyewitness series, in general, seems to be more informative. The photographs and illustrations instill a higher degree of keen anticipation and provide a better means of choosing in advance between a world of competing destinations and alternative tourist attractions.
Their guide to Switzerland, in particular, was astonishingly accurate and complete - history, food, travel, hotels, geography, destinations, estimated costs, highlights, outdoor activities - every last one of them spot on and accurately described from the perspective of an actual trip through St Moritz, Lucerne, the Bernina Pass to Tirano, Italy and Interlaken. Even now the photographs of Swiss cuisine and cheese can set my mouth to watering!
One noteworthy omission that my traveling companion and I discovered by accident - Switzerland offers a museum pass for 30 Swiss francs that will give admission for one month to virtually every museum in the country. That's a remarkable offer given that the countryside is positively littered with a host of attractive museums, castles and attractions most of which charge a 5 to 10 franc admission. We learned that little tidbit from the concierge of the Palace Lucerne Hotel - kudos to the hotel for over the top service and a great piece of advice!
With that one small suggestion for addition to future editions, the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Switzerland easily earns a five-star review. And Switzerland, by the bye, is certainly a delicious five-star travel destination!

A fun and thorough guide.......2005-01-12
As a Swiss/US dual citizen, currently living in Rhode Island, but having spent a good 30 years in Switzerland, I was eager to get this travel guide. I ordered it in part out of curiousity to see how my favorite travel guide publisher would portray Switzerland, and in part to have a book to be able to show my friends where I come from.
I have to say that this travel guide more than pleasantly surprised me. With its beautiful illustrations, this book is not only fun to read, but also loaded with accurate and valuable information on all the major (and minor) sights that Switzerland has to offer.
Having lived in Zurich myself, I was pleasantly surprised how thorough this guide explores the different points of interest and learned a thing or two I did not know myself. Even the list of Restaurants was excellent. Do go and enjoy a meal at my favorite restaurant in Zurich, the "Kronenhalle" (bit pricey but well worthwhile). For an inexpensive and hearty meal, I would recommend the "Zeughauskeller" in addition to the list.
The book also contains a section on the different food specialties that Switzerland has to offer, which is a great feature for anyone who likes to immerse themselves in the local culture and is willing to live for a week or two abroad, resisting the urge of running to McDonalds.
Take it from someone who lived there: This book is by far the most comprehensive guide to Switzerland available today.
