      Product Description

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A448924. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The evolution of Kazakhstan's security policies since independence, and particularly after September 11, 2001, indicates that the country has chosen to plan an active role in regional and international security as a means to security its own national interest. It has opened to the West, and played an active role in the War on Terrorism. It has also worked to maintain Central Asia's regional security architecture. These policies have had some demonstrable affect on national, regional and international security, but as a young state in a trouble region, Kazakhstan will require increased Western assistance if it is to become the force for stability that it seeks to be. Kazakhstan has a very important geopolitical location, and can play a role of a regional leader in Central Asia, but it is still a very young state and needs a strong support. "perhaps nowhere was the granting of independence more bittersweet and the challenges of sustaining it more complex than in the case of Kazakhstan." (Mathews, Jessica T. Foreword in "Kazakhstan: Unfulfilled Promise" by Olcott, Martha Brill, Washington D. C. Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, 2002)

        Book Description

This essay addresses the "new-new" issues on the emerging agenda for the global trade negotiations to follow the recently concluded Uruguay Round. The authors first examine the extent to which international rules in new trade areas are needed and then consider the three highest profile issues: competition policy, labor standards, and linking trade and environment.

Robert Lawrence argues that if an international agreement on competition policy was possible, developing countries would derive considerable benefits. Dani Rodrik examines the evidence and concludes that labor standards--or lack thereof--have consequences for trade and foreign investment patterns. He then considers whether a social-safeguards approach can be made to work for labor standards and suggests that the risks of not negotiating such a clause outweigh the dangers of an inappropriately designed process. Finally, John Whalley argues that the central issue for trade and the environment is whether developing countries should be compensated for policies encouraging environmental restraint.

The world is behaving strangely these days: grassfires rage across millions of acres in Texas and Mongolia, heat waves kill hundreds in Milwaukee and Bombay, floods ravage North Dakota and Oman. Ross Gelbspan, a veteran journalist, seizes on these and other alarming examples to argue that global warming is fast upon us--and, more to the point, that the multitrillion-dollar energy concerns are doing their best to keep the world public from knowing about widespread changes in the global climate caused, in part, by the fossil fuel-induced destruction of the ozone layer. His polemic is always interesting, if often arguable, and Gelbspan tempers his attack on Big Energy with a reasonable proposal that alternative-energy programs be given greater funding priority in the United States (the rest of the industrial world having already made great investments in geothermal, solar, and wind energy).

5 out of 5 stars The Heat is On.......2002-10-15

An excellent updated companion book by a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist to "The Next One Hundred Years: Shaping the Fate of Our Living Earth"[1991], by Jonathan Weiner, another Pulitzer Prize winning author.

Gelbspan is familiar with the halls of Washington & business policy and offers his readers an inside view of the mostly behind-the-scenes struggle over power and policy decision making with regard to the Global Climate Crisis.

I recommend reading this book after Weiner's, because some scientific concepts and technical jargon may not be immediately recognizable by the average reader.

              5 out of 5 stars A Pulitzer-prizewinning author excels in this one!.......1998-10-05

Minority viewpoints among U.S. scientists have too much influence on policy, Gelbspan reports. He provides evidence that other countries have invested in alternative energy sources, i.e. geothermal, solar, and wind energy, which have helped to reduce pollution. Exposes industry front groups, e.g. "Information Council on the Environment" that give the appearance of uncertainty within the scientific community.

4 out of 5 stars Gelbspan offers insight into science & politics of warming.......1998-09-10

Having just read The Heat Is On and interviewed both Ross Gelbspan and Robert Balling for EV World, I came away with an appreciation of both the complexity of the issue, but also the politics underlying it. While Gelbspan admits he's no climatologist, he's interviewed numerous professionals in the field, and read the works of the leading skeptics, including Balling who would have you believe that this is a non-issue and even if it were an issue, we can't do anything about it. Ross not only thinks we can do something about it, but he's also spent the last year working with others to develop a plan to begin the gradual transition away from fossil fuels to sustainable technologies, one which won't jeopardize the global economy or the environment. EV World features RealAudio interviews with both Gelbspan and Balling.

1 out of 5 stars The author Gelbspan has no understanding of climate change........1998-08-07

And so the main thrust of his approach is ad hominem attacks. As a professional climatologist with more than 30 years experience (and not mentioned in this book, so I have no stake in it), I would rate this book as total trash and urge that no one read it.

The book deserves a zero star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Must reading on this subject.......1997-12-20

Ross Gelbspan provides an invaluable addition to the literature on a global problem. He details the way in which the oil and coal industries, both of whom have an enormous financial stake in the status quo, energy-wise, have poured money into a propaganda campaign designed to prevent action on global warming. They have done so by creating the illusion that there is a genuine debate by scientists as to whether global warming is taking place. Probably the most valuable part of the book is the appendix in which Gelbspan reproduces statements from leading climate scientists demolishing some of the most common arguments of the so-called "greenhouse skeptics" Patrick Michaels, Robert Balling and S. Fred Singer, three key figures in the corporate propaganda campaign.

                    Product Description

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying hoopwood; wood split poles, piles, pickets, and stakes; rough wooden sticks for walking sticks and tool handles; and chipwood and similar strips? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of hoopwood; wood split poles, piles, pickets, and stakes; rough wooden sticks for walking sticks and tool handles; and chipwood and similar strips vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of hoopwood; wood split poles, piles, pickets, and stakes; rough wooden sticks for walking sticks and tool handles; and chipwood and similar strips? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing the regional markets for imported and exported hoopwood; wood split poles, piles, pickets, and stakes; rough wooden sticks for walking sticks and tool handles; and chipwood and similar strips. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for each region, is based on a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the shares that countries are likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information for strategic planning purposes.

                    Book Description

Whether you are an experienced or novice hiker, you will benefit from the information in this guide. The author describes in detail 50 trails that will take you to Oahu's lush valleys, spectacular waterfalls, and windswept ridges. Although several trails included in the previous edition have been reclassified here as "closed" because of restricted access or hazardous conditions, six new hikes have been added to this revised, updated edition. Included for each hike are directions for reaching the trailhead, a detailed route description, and information on the length of the hike, degree of difficulty, and trail conditions. The notes section has been expanded to help readers readily identify geological features, historical points of interest, and commonly encountered plants and birds while on the trail. An appendix includes brief descriptions of 37 additional hikes that are currently closed to the public.

5 out of 5 stars The only book you need!.......2003-07-15

Working as an outdoor guide in Hawaii for a summer gave me a chance to discover the island of Oahu. It also helped me realize the that is the ONLY guide to hiking on Oahu that is worth buying. Not only do you get VERY accurate trail descriptions, you also get driving directions, directions from TheBus and information on flora and fauna in the area. I dare you to try and get lost!

4 out of 5 stars Varied but difficult hikes!.......2003-02-05

This book has taken us thorugh tropical rain forests, dense valleys, and sun-parched craters. The variety of hikes is wonderful. There is something for everyone in here, well, everyone except the beginner hiker. It seems even beginning hikes in the book are a bit challenging. This is because Oahu has such a varity of terrain. However, if you are looking to take a relaxing stroll through the woods this book will be of no use to you. We have children so we only do the novice hikes and even those are challenging, but fun and dirty! This is probalby for more serious hikers and some of the hikes mentioned are 12 miles long! That takes a long time in Oahu's terrain! The author always write in interesting tidbits of info in his hike description which I like. Things such as the where the strawberry guava trees are, where the WWII tunnel is, etc...The one negative to this book is that many of the hikes the author writes about are closed to the public and you have to write for permission to hike them. To me, this is a pain and I am not organized enough to plan ahead and do this. If you are better organized than I, I am sure you would enjoy them. We are just a bit more spontaneous. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Only O`ahu Hiking Book You Need.......2002-07-18

I won a copy of the first edition of this book in a contest in 1994, and since then it has helped me find dozens of beautiful and enjoyable trails.

For example, one of the trails we found was a great hike in Wahiawa through the back country of an Army training base. As the author suggested, we wrote to the commander and we got permission to do this hike that rambles over hills and across streams, and all at the cool elevation of Wahiawa.

Some of the highlights of the book include great descriptions of the flora along the trail, reproductions of topo maps for each hike that show you the pitch of the trail(although you should probably get the real topo if you plan to get lost), clear route descriptions that show that the author has been on these trails many times, and a wonderful layout.

It is the best hiking book I have ever read (although I've probably only read about a dozen). It is without equal among O`ahu hiking books.

I just bought the second edition, and if possible, it's even better than the first one.

5 out of 5 stars good book but outdated.......1999-11-28

this is a great hiking guide but please keep in mind the published date; it's quite old by now and as such, the detailed hiking descriptions are sorely in need of an update. thus, please be careful when using the guide as a reference, as you could end up getting lost. getting an opinion from local hikers would be your best bet.

5 out of 5 stars A book for all ages, skill levels, and adventurers on Oahu!.......1999-07-04

Simple: this is the best hiking book ever published regarding trails on Oahu. How do I know? Not only have I used it, I've hiked a couple of times with the author and watched him take notes. An experienced hiker with over 20 years in these mountains, Stuart Ball knows what he's talking about and describes the trails with detail, map, and comment. I've seen the other books on the market - this is by far the BEST reference for hiking on Oahu. Ask anyone you find on these trails - they might just produce a copy from their backpacks!

5 out of 5 stars Think outside the box.......2007-10-13

The Write Brain is a fun, inspiring book that can be used by anyone, at any time of the day! I don't write in the book; instead, I use my own notebook, that way if inspiration strikes throughout my story/poem/whatever, I can just continue on and not worry about mucking up a beautiful book or running out of space.

As far as the prompts go, I find it's easier to stray from the prompt, twist it around, and have fun with it in general! It's not a homework assignment, it's CREATIVE INSPIRATION and should be treated as such!

The Write Brain is good for anyone and everyone who wants to have FUN while writing!

                    3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-09-11

The exercises were fun and interesting, sometimes not enough room for all I had to say.
A couple of exercises I didn't quite understand. Dark pages made it almost impossible to write on.
However, I would recommend this book, for all the wonderful ideas in it.

5 out of 5 stars The Write-Brain Workbook: 366 Exercises to Liberate Your Writing.......2007-02-06

A terrific book. Its big, colorful, and has a scrap book look to the pages. Thee difference between this and other idea or what if books is the NEXT STEP. It takes the idea, or just a part of it further and in a new direction. I'm enjoying the heck out of it.

                    4 out of 5 stars Action Packed.......2006-11-01

This book is chalk full of prompts and ideas to get your brain working. It is also a very visually stimulating book with it's vivid colors and all the shapes and pictures utilized throughout.

The entire book won't appeal to everyone (I don't know many that do), but it is a great book to get your brain thinking in different ways. And even if you don't like the exerices that are packed into this thick book you still can use the 'story starters' that are presented on almost every page.

It's a little pricey at $20, but all in all it's a good thought provoker.

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun for This Writer!.......2006-10-11

As a non-fiction writer, it's all too easy for me to fall into a routine with my writing. I heard Bonnie speak at a writers' workshop recently, did one of the sample exercises, and was hooked. The exercises have been fun, and not only is it "forcing" me to be more creative, but it's also therapeutic, as I often seem to be writing about pet peeves or challenges on my mind. :)

I like the fact that these are short exercises. And I also like writing in the book with a pen in a comfortable spot, instead of my fingers frantically flying across the keyboard. The exercises are definitely carrying over into my work as I think of new ways to write about ordinary topics.

As a bonus, the pages are beautifully designed. A really unique book!

Better call before you go to any recommended restaurants and double-check all the directions. On our Christmas 2004 visit to NYC we went to El Fogon and found it is now a seamstress shop. Subsequently discovered that El Fogon closed prior to April 2001 according to a Google search. Emily's at 1325 5th Av- closed "a couple years ago" one finds out when calling the phone number listed. Keep in mind these are both "Recommended" in the NY Times 2005 Guide! Going to Tavern-on-the-Green via subway? Guide tells you to take the 6 train to E66th St. You'll wind up on the EAST side at Lexington & E66th but Tavern-on-the-Green is on the WEST side a couple miles away. Try the B train to Columbus Circle or 72nd instead and you'll only be a few blocks away (better yet, take a cab). If you go to the Museum of Modern Art, take a little extra money. The adult admission is $20, not $12 as listed in the book. No wonder the author is listed as "not available". Recommended restaurants that closed a few years ago, inaccurate directions, incorrect information - These are just the mistakes we found-do they really update this every year or just put a new cover on a 4 year old guide? The color map of the subway system on the inside back cover is nice, but be sure to have a magnifying glass to read it. Not sure if they got anything right but if you're going to the Big Apple, don't rely on this book.

Time Out publishes a superior dining guide that includes enough quirky categories to satiate the adventurous. Whenever we get together in a large group, we always consult our Time Out NY guide. For such small blurbs, the writing really captures the spirit of restaurant, the best flavors, and the occasional downfall. Guide includes a section on Dive Bars and encompasses Brooklyn and Queens. Time Out's writing is geared toward 20somethings to 40somethings, though its picks certainly encompass all ages. Personally, I find Time Out more reliable than Zagat ratings. Possibly because personal opinions seem more readily available.

Incidentally, the London Time Out guide was one of the first things my husband's sister pulled out when she was looking for a restaurant to take us out to in London.
