Customer Reviews:
Good book, could have been better........2007-08-25
It was a good book with plenty of info. The only problem I have with it is the author says he is not out to sell you on a brand but to give you what you should look for in a product, than tells you, brand X is the absolute best and is available at my retail store. Which is fine and dandy but if he was going to do so, he should not have said he was not. This installment is by the way, 200,000% better than #2. #2, if you are an evolved hunter (past your shoot everything that moves and only trophies will do for me phases) is a complete waist of time. Having said that, if he had a book #3, I would flip threw it to see if he put the sort of information I was hoping for in book 2 down in it. Book 1 (this book) is about how to go to Alaska and hunt, book to is sort of short stories with tidbits of info here and there.
Hardly about Hunting Alaska.......2007-02-13
While the author makes an honest effort to explain certain aspects of hunting in Alaska, he also includes several chapters/stories about his personal hunts. While they are interesting, they do little to prepare you for the hunt. I was looking more for specific information about where to hunt the different species and specific clothing and equipment guides. I had recently purchased Hunting Sheep in Alaska by Tony Russ. His book goes into much greater detail about dall sheep and helps to explain the different geographical areas of Alaska, what to expect for terrain, trophy size, weather, etc. I strongly recommend Tony's book over this one.
Great information!.......2006-08-07
By far this is the best resource I have found for information on hunting in Alaska. It gives very detailed information on what types of equipment to bring, how to meet your carry weight limitations and even how to pack for the airlines. All this info is supplemented by great stories and detailed experiences. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to hunt in Alaska.
Fantastic new, down to earth writing style and information.......2005-08-05
I gave up reading all hunting magazines and books many years ago because of all the "my outdoors" style of writing which provided more ego than info. Have been to Alaska several times in the past working/fishing and after moving here 3 years ago and spending all my free time building a log home, I have had very little time to hunt. My wife knows I do not read many outdoors books because most of them pretty much say alot about the writers ego and little else.
She bought me a copy of this book for our recent anniversary and in less than a month it looks like its been read many, many times. (in fact when I met Marc here in Anchorage it was in my day pack- he insisted on signing a fresh, new copy which he gave to me!) Marc has a style of writing that does not tell you he knows everything, he simply tells you what he has experienced during Alaska hunts and what clothing and gear have worked well for him and what have'nt. I am currently in the process of testing some of the clothing and equipment that he recommends and so far, I have to say, he is right on the money. At 45 years old and raised on cotton hunting gear...well lets just say, those days are over. I tried out some new micro fleece shirts and pants on a hot and steep hike the other day in the rain and I was perfectly warm (though sweating up a storm) and even the mosquitos didn't seem to know what to make of it. If you live in or are visiting Alaska, you must try to stop in and see him down off the Old Seward Highway near Diamond Blvd. Then see if you can leave the store (Wiggy's Alaska) without buying at least a few of the tested and true products he offers there. You won't make it if you truly like to hunt hard.
Good Book.......2004-11-16
If you are thinking of hunting in Alaska, this book gives you the motivation to stop thinking and start planning. And, even better, Marc Taylor will take your calls and speak to you anytime about hunting in Alaska.

Customer Reviews:
Very entertaining book. .......2007-01-18
This is a very entertaining book. Good for a coffee table type book.
Massive NYC Info..Accessible andUnique!.......2005-12-06
Looking for very old maps of the Big City, the Mayoral and Presidential elections, Capsules of about every neighborhood in all 5 boroughs, histories of Broadway, Wall Street, MidTown, Columbia and NYU, the New School, and every other educational institution. Music from Classical to Jazz to Pop to Rock (but there is no listing for Sinatra! I think there should be.)How about the incredible skyscapers, docks, restaurants, clubs. And all this goes back to 1624, when the Dutch first settled. And sections on about every leading NYC personality ever. (though for some reason Mantle and Dimaggio are not listed separately, amoung many other famous NYC sports stars ). Even though the book is 10 years old, it is about as timeless as you can get, even with my very few small quibles mentioned!
Fantastic!.......2005-10-24
If there was anything you ever wanted to know about NYC but couldn't find the answer, this book will have it. What an amazing treasure trove of history, information and trivia. This book should be in every library in America.
The ultimate book about the greatest city in the world!.......2005-10-24
As a person who has visited New York several times, this is the book that has everything you need to know about the world's greatest city! The people, the neighborhoods and the interesting tidbits that make it a wonderful place! Highly recommended reading!!
Settle all bets around the dinner table........2004-07-03
This tome, as I like to think of it, is spectacular in it's scope. It covers everything from hospitals that have long since closed, to details about the city's aqueduct water transportation system. You usually go to the book, in order to look up a specific piece of information, but spend hours perusing entries you never heard of and discovering things about America's largest city that make you gasp. If you live in New York, get this book. It holds an essential place on any New Yorker's bookshelf.

Ken Burns's America: The Statue of Liberty

Release Date: 2005-01-01 |
Book Description
She needs no introduction. For decades, she's been the world's leading icon of democracy. Four million people visit her each year. She is the very symbol of America. But how well do we really know the Statue of Liberty? Did you know, for instance, that her origin dates back to Roman antiquity? Or that New York narrowly beat out Philadelphia for the right to house her? Or that her nose is three feet, eight inches long?
In time to celebrate Lady Liberty at the millennium, this gorgeous encyclopedia is sure to satisfy the countless requests historian Barry Moreno has received to deliver the first full-scale reference ever written on the Statue of Liberty. As its name implies, The Statue of Liberty Encyclopedia promises to answer every possible question about our famous monument. Featuring an abundance of little-known but fascinating aspects and curiosities about the statue's history, the book also presents a vast collection of illustrations -- many never before published -- ranging from the amusing to the poignant to the pa-triotic. Stops on this visual tour include Betty Grable making a visit to the statue, antique autogyros flying overhead, and a gravity-defying glimpse of Liberty's spiraling inner armature.
The Statue of Liberty Encyclopedia is not just the history of one monument but the story of our nation and its far-reaching cultural and ideological roots. Elegant and eloquent, the book will stand as an emotional, educational, and entertaining testament to the statue's enduring significance.
Customer Reviews:
Best Liberty Book since 1986!.......2000-10-09
Finally, a book worth having! There were a lot of books published between 1984 and 1986 for the statue's centennial and only a few were worth having. This newly published book is a must have for the Statue of Liberty collector, historian, or proud American.
"The Statue of Encyclopedia, serves as the first ever top-to-bottom reference on one of the most beloved national monuments. Barry Moreno, the premier expert and historian of the Statue of Liberty, leads readers on a comprehensive, beautifully illustrated A-to-Z tour. Featuring an abundance of little-known but fascinating aspects and curiosities about her history, the book also includes a vast collection of photographs - many never before published."
Every American should own this........2000-09-23
Whether you're political, or artistic, every American should own this book. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? An intangible concept that is broken down into encyclopedia form for scholars and us regular folks to digest. There are dozens of books about the Statue, but I found this one is by far the most comprehensive and the pictures are of outstanding quality. Highly recommended.

Book Description
The Street Book contains brief biographical sketches for more than one hundred of ManhattanÂ's well- and lesser-known streets. With photographs, period drawings, and reproductions of old newspapers, The Street Book is a visual treat as well. The detailed topographical maps of Manhattan provide an easy reference for locating streets, and even make it possible to use The Street Book as a walking guide.
Customer Reviews:
A great primer to Manhattan's street names.......2004-07-02
When people think of the street names of Manhattan, they probably think of the grid and its numbered roads. WRONG! Manhattan, especially the older neighborhoods from Houston Street south to the Battery, are filled with twisting little streets whose names resonate with Manhattan's history. This is where you'll find out why Houston Street is pronounced "HOW-ston". Where did Maiden Lane get its name from? Who was Barclay? This book will tell all. My only complaint (which prevented from giving this five stars) was with the binding: it cracked almost immediately upon opening and, right now, several pages are precariously clinging to the spine. Maybe it was only the batch that mine came out of which is so weak.
Still this is a very informative book. If only it can tell me why New Yorkers pronounce Avenue of the Americas as "Sixth Avenue".

Book Description
In Tales from the Georgia Tech Sideline, former Georgia Tech star quarterback Kim King shares stories from his unique half-century involvement with Yellow Jackets football. As a child growing up in Atlanta, King watched coach Bobby Dodd's great Tech teams of the 1950s play in historic Grant Field. The Jackets were the team and sporting event in town, a social event on autumn afternoons well before major league professional sports came to Atlanta in the '60s. A highly recruited high school quarterback, King went to Tech and became the star quarterback from 1965-67. "The Young Left-Hander," as late Tech radio announcer Al Ciraldo called King, led the Jackets to two bowl games, including the 1967 Orange Bowl. He was Bobby Dodd's last quarterback and one of Dodd's all-time favorite players. The Hall of Fame coach retired after the 1966 season. King's involvement with Tech football did not end with his graduation. In 1974 he joined Ciraldo in the radio booth as Tech's color commentator. King has seen and called it all for the last three decades. In the book he details Tech's struggles after Dodd's retirement; the colorful and turbulent Pepper Rodgers years; Bill Curry's painful first coaching steps back at his alma mater before restoring Tech to prominence in the mid-'80s; and the two awful seasons Bobby Ross endured before the historic 1990 breakthrough, culminating in Georgia Tech's fourth national championship. Following Bill Lewis's disastrous tenure in the early '90s, George O'Leary revived Tech football yet again before his controversial departure for Notre Dame led to Chan Gailey's arrival on The Flats. King was in frigid Boise, Idaho, last January, when P.J. Daniels ran wild in theHumanitarian Bowl once an overnight snowfall had been plowed from the field. In routing Texas-El Paso, Georgia Tech regained its status as the winningest bowl team in college football. Kim King has seen many of those bowl victories and nearly all of the last 50 years of Tech football. He shares those memories, along with his personal reminiscences of Tech players and coaches, triumphs and travails, in Tales from the Georgia Tech Sideline.
