Raised in a Chicago orphanage, he survives abuse and harsh circumstances and grows up a brave, loyal, and hardworking young man with a true capacity for self-sacrifice.

Freckles becomes a timber guard in the Limberlost swamp in Indiana and exhibits extraordinary courage and resourcefulness on the job. He also falls in love with the Swamp Angel, a young girl whose beauty and kindness bring out the best in others.

A beloved turn-of-the-century Indiana classic for all ages.

Download Description

The Boss showed him around the timber-line, and engaged him a place to board with the family of his head teamster, Duncan, whom he had brought from Scotland with him, and who lived in a small clearing he was working out between the swamp and the corduroy. When the gang was started for the south camp, Freckles was left to guard a fortune in the Limberlost. That he was under guard himself those first weeks he never knew.

5 out of 5 stars Never leave home without it.......2007-08-27

I have a 1940s edition of the book and it's been my favourite for 9 years. Whenever I go move (and I move A LOT) or go back to school I always have it with me because it is my favourite book of all time. I had a panic attack because my mom had put it in a box and I couldn't find it. I insist that you read this book, and id you don't at least enjoy it a little ...

This book will be my favourite for all time (because they just don't write them like they used to)

Freckles is one of Gene Stratton Porter's best works! I am also pleased at the condition of the book and the speed with which it arrived!

5 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Vintage Romance.......2007-03-13

I read this at an impressionable age and fell in love with stalwart Freckles and the Limberlost Swamp and his Angel. Pretty sentimental by today's standards, this book champions saving the forests and wetlands. The descriptions are beautiful and evocative. A great romance.

5 out of 5 stars Freckles.......2007-01-16

I purchased this previously read book as a gift. It is CLEAN in language and story line. It is educational (flora and fauna, etc.) and about people with good moral values. When I finished reading the book I wanted more, so I've read more of Gene Stratton Porter's books and shared them with my friends.

4 out of 5 stars Historical Influence.......2006-02-22

I think what our friend "the lone dissenter" does not remember or realize is that Stratton-Porter's book, Freckles, and her subsequent book, A Girl of the Limberlost, is a product of her own life and the times in which she lived. It is not disgusting or elitist, but a report and example of how life was in the early 1900s. There were class differences and it was challenging for the 'low-born' people to believe they could rise above that. They didn't have our modern-day notion of arrogance and independence. I believe that Freckles and other books written by Gene Stratton-Porter are valuable as a piece of history as wel as for the literary content and unique storylines.

Book Description

Top ten New York Times bestselling author J.A. Jance brings another stunning novel of passion, violence, and dreams turned deadly, featuring Seattle Homicide Detective J.P. Beaumont.

There are many bizarre and terrible ways to die. Seattle Homicide Detective J.P. Beaumont thought he had seen them all – until he saw this body, its wounds, and the murder weapon: an elegant woman's shoe, its stiletto heel gruesomely caked with blood. The evidence is shocking and unsettling, even for a man who prowls the shadows for a living, for it suggests that savagery is not the exclusive domain of the predatory male. And the scent of a stylish killer is pulling Beaumont into a world of drugs, corruption, and murder to view close–up a cinematic dream at its most nightmarish䠮d lethal.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Something's wrong and I can't tell what it is".......2007-08-18

J.P. Beaumont is one of the most likable and intriguing characters in the mystery genre. He is a divorced detective who has a daughter in college and enough money that he does not need to work, but he enjoys his job. J.P. is the proud owner of a long list of failures with women, not all of which were his fault. It starts with his divorce, and then follows with women with which he gets involved and who end up either dead or on the guilty side of a crime. Whenever I start a new book in this series I ask myself: will it be different this time?

This time around, the case involves a dead man by the tracks and a woman's shoe near the body with blood on its stiletto heel. This is complemented by another dead man, apparently from natural causes, in the house of the first victim. J.P. gets the case and he immediately suspects foul play in the case of the second body. And the discovery of a pack of cocaine in the victim's pillow adds timber to the fire. From then on, the plot starts moving full speed and there are plenty of twists and turns along the way to keep our interest at a maximum level.

All of the usual players are present in this story. We have the femme fatale, the annoying Maxwell Cole, who hates Beau's guts, and a new partner. Beau's new sidekick is Big Al Lindstrom, but we will soon see his old partner, Peters, help from the hospital. Peters is there due to a broken vertebrae, and after a period of depression he decides to start "living" again and pulls a "Lincoln Rhyme".

J.A. Jance has done it again. She delivers another novel that moves at a fast pace and that keeps us guessing as to what is really going on until the last few pages. The author shows how good she is at varying her style, and the contrast between this series and the one featuring Joanna Brady could not be clearer. She does a fantastic job in both series though.

I recommend this book to everyone that loves a good mystery, but I just want to give you a word of advice. Do not start this novel close to the end of your day, or you will find yourself reading well into the night. There is no letting go; trust me, I learned this from experience!

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT ADDITION TO THIS AUTHOR'S WORK.......2007-03-21

I feel that the fans of J.P. Beaumont will love this one. It is so typical J.A. Jance. I enjoyed every page of this one. Another reviewer has done a wonderful job of outlining the plot, so I will not repeat what is obvious. Jance's character developement (this author's strongest skill) holds very true to form with this work and we learn more and more of her detective Beaumont. We also get a look at the drug culture in that part of the country (Seattle of course) and some of the alternative life styles found their. This work has some fascinating twists (no spoilers here) and as one reviewer points out, just when you have things figured out, you get the rug pulled from under you. Of course, the book will be much better for those who have read the preceeding books dealing with this seattle Cop, but the book is also able to stand on it's own and is simply a good read. Recommend this one highly.

4 out of 5 stars Who Mourns For Dracula?.......2007-10-16

Without question, this volume contains the very heart of the series, which to my mind, represents Marvel Comics at her best: with strong characters, beautiful artwork and the guts to take chances! Writer Marv Wolfman had been on the series for about a year and was comfortable with putting the characters through their paces-- and in this volume, they were put through a meat grinder!

The main plot deals with the aftermath from the events in the previous volume. As Dracula's plots and schemes begin to come to fruition, he notices a change within himself. Hannibal King, a reluctant vampire and detective (ala ANGEL) had blatantly defied him (in volume one); Drac's finding it difficult to make his transformations and little-by-little, his strength is fading. He comes to the conclusion that he's losing his powers! It's a mad dash as the Lord of The Undead tries to find the answers to his dilema, realizing that if his powers vanish, can a final death be far away? And as for our vampire hunters, don't think they cut him any slack--this is the opportunity they've been waiting for! Meanwhile, lurking in the shadows, is the mastermind behind it all who awaits the outcome--while making his or her own plots for world conquest!

This is a "danse macabre" that is screaming for a full color edition. Artist Gene Colan is the undisbuted master of shadows, equalled only perhaps by "Ghastly" Graham Ingels and in this story, Colan never disappoints. Colan's high caffeine "camera angles", chirascuro lighting and careful rendering gives each character a human dignity that is often missing from the work of other mimetic artists; on these pages Colan demonstrates the true meaning of "realism". Aiding and abetting Colan's pencils, are the inks of Tom Palmer, whose warm yet icy coloring is painfully missed in this black and white edition.

Besides all of this hype, is it good? It's simply MAGNIFICENT! Unlike lesser efforts by others, Wolfman tried to make each chapter as exciting and interesting as his well-developed subplot! There's action, mystery and horror galore in addition to many stand-out minor stories that give us thrills, laughs and a few tears; "Battleground of Blood" (the showdown between Dracula and Quincy Harker) and "Hell Hath No Fury" are but two of such efforts while we are delighted by the introduction of two "comic relief" characters: Harold H. Harold (who may be loosely based on Mr.Wolfman, himself) and Aurora Rabinowitz, who would play a key role later in the story. If that isn't enough, we later meet one of the most complex and fascinating characters in comic-book history, Domini, she who would love a vampire. (Paging Wynona Ryder!)

The only thing stopping this book from receiving five stars is this: it's in black and white and printed on newsprint! Oh, the horror-- the horror!

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

There is some classic work here, as the team of vampire hunters is working solidly together, and Dracula runs across some powerful antagonists of his own, in the weird Dr Sun, and the powerful sorceror Dr Strange. Rachel Van Helsing, Quincy Harker, Frank Drake and others are still trying to put wooden arrows into him, giving him further problems to deal with, as he runs into more Marvel characters, including the Silver Surfer.

5 out of 5 stars The end of Comicdom's Number 1 Fear Magazine.......2005-10-16

Dracula first appeared in the Marvel Universe in the early 1970s when "The Tomb of Dracula" first appeared. Penciler Gene Colan, the perfect artist for the comic book, was there from the beginning, but Tom Palmer, who would ink the vast majority of issues did not arrive until the third issue, and writer Marv Wolfman did not take over the scripting duties until the seventh issue. By that point most of the cast of characters had been established: Frank Drake, the American descendant of Dracula himself, Rachel Van Helsing, the great-granddaughter of the professor in Bram Stoker's novel, and Taj, her mute servant from India. But Wolfman immediately added the final member of the core group, Quincy Harker, the son of Jonathan and Mina Harker, now an old man in a wheelchair (because of an encounter with the Count), who brings a scientific approach to vampire slaying.

More importantly, Wolfman took the long view towards the characters and the comic book. There is an inherent problem in that your basic comic book story for "The Tomb of Dracula" requires the heroes NOT to kill the villain, otherwise the comic book turns to dust along with Dracula. Wolfman and Colan portrayed Dracula as a vampire with a plan, who was out to do more than kill the vampire slayers before they killed him. This comic book took its time, a fact that was best indicated by the Doctor Sun plotline, where for issue after issue we were treated to a page or less of scenes showing Chinese minions acting out the orders of the mysterious Doctor Sun. Wolfman milked the set up for all it was worth before finally revealing the Doctor Sun was (gasp!) a disembodied brain. Wolfman also created off beat characters for a vampire comic book, such as Hannibal King, the Vampire Detective, Blade (#58, "Undead by Daylight!"), and the quirky nebbish Harold H. Harold, author of "The Vampire Conspiracy" (#56).

In the first story in this collection, "Where Soars the Silver Surfer" (#50), we have one of the few times that Dracula interacted with other characters from the Marvel Universe. Previously it had been the Werewolf from "Werewolf by Night" and Dr. Strange, both of whom make sense for a horror comic, while the Silver Surfer is the rare exception of a more traditional superhero. However, it is his purity in contrast to the vampire's cursed soul that makes their conflict particularly dramatic. In the end, the idea that "The Tomb of Dracula" is out of the mainstream of the Marvel Universe is preserved.

The end-game for the comic book that plays out in these issues has to do with Janus, the son of Dracula born to his wife, Domini. When Dracula got married and his new bride conceived a child as a result of an arcane ritual, that was certainly strange enough. But Wolfman was interested in playing out the battle between good and evil on a larger scale, which culminated in a confrontation between Dracula and Satan himself ("Life After Undeath," #64) at which point the vampire is turned back into a human being by the Prince of Darkness. However, do not fear: the final fate of Dracula will come down to a last battle between the Lord of Vampires and the humans who have been pursuing him for a half-dozen years in the pages of these comic books.

As good as Wolfman was in plotting these tales he was helped by having the perfect artist for "The Tomb of Dracula" in Gene Colan. Nobody could have illustrated Dracula's transformations better than Colan, with his swirling lines as the vampire morphed into a giant bat. Add rain into the picture, as Colan does on the cover and throughout #60, and you ample proof of this perfection. Palmer's best ink work was done over Neal Adam's pencils, but his partnership with Colan on this comic book is a more substantial body of work and when another inker stepped in, the results were always less impressive. Fortunately, in Volume 3 the only example from this is when Bob McCleod inks Colan's pencils for a "Tomb of Dracula Magazine" story, which ends up being arguably the best of the non-Palmer inked Colan stories because it was intended for a black & white magazine.

The cover art is taken from the cover of the final issue of "The Tomb of Dracula," #70. In addition to the final issues of the comic book (#50-70), there are also stories from the black & white "Tomb of Dracula Magazine," which, the back of this collection is quick to say, were "unrated by the Comics Code Authority!" Just so you know, Volume 1 of the "Essential Tomb of Dracula" contains issues #1-25 of "The Tomb of Dracula," along with a cross-over story in "Werewolf By Night" #15 and the "Giant-Size Chillers" #1 story that introduced Lilith, Dracula's daguther. Volume 2 has issues #26-49 of "Tomb of Dracula," a cross-over with "Dr. Strange" #14, and a quartet of less than stellar stories from "Giant-Size Dracula" #2-5. You really have to get all three volumes so that you can appreciate how Wolfman, Colan, and Palmer crafted what is still from a qualitative standpoint the best "fear" comic book since the days of E.C.

5 out of 5 stars The Dr. Sun storyline comes to a head in "Tomb of Dracula".......2005-10-14

The horror comic book died a horrible death when E.C.'s celebrated lineup of "Tales from the Crypt, "The Vault of Horror," and "The Haunt of Fear" fell victim to the creation of the Comics Code of America, a censoring board created in 1955 in response to Dr. Fredric Wertham's book "Seduction of the Innocent" and the resulting public outcry against horror and crime comics. A decade later a few publishers but out black & white magazines with color covers, such as Warren's "Creepy," "Eerie," and "Vampirella," to evade the Comics Code. If anything, they were more violent than the precode comic books. DC Comics continued the anthology tradition with "House of Secrets" and "Tales of the Unexpected," and eventually released "Swamp-Thing." When Marvel introduced "The Tomb of Dracula" in the early 1970s it was a rather modest entry into the horror market. But because of the success of this comic book it would be followed up with "Werewolf by Night" and "The Frankenstein Monster." But it was "Tomb of Dracula" that would end up proclaiming on its cover that it was "Comicdom's Number 1 Fear Magazine, starting with issue #43, which comes near the end of "Essential Tomb of Dracula, Volume 2.

This second volume includes #26-49 of "Tomb of Dracula," a crossover with "Dr. Strange" #14, and a quartet of less than stellar stories from "Giant-Size Dracula" #2-5. By this point the comic book has put together a team of fearless vampire hunters: Frank Drake, a descendant of Dracula himself, Rachel Van Helsing, the great-granddaughter of the professor in Bram Stoker's novel, Taj, her mute servant from India, and Quincy Harker, the son of Jonathan and Mina Harker, now an old man in a wheelchair (because of an encounter with the Count), who brings a scientific approach to vampire slaying. Joining the group in this volume are the vampire slayer Blade and the writer Harold H. Harold, and their are visits by Hannibal King and Brother Voodoo. Consequently, "Tomb of Dracula" was basically a quest to track down and stake the King of the Vampires.

Of the three volumes reprinting "The Tomb of Dracula" in black & white this one has the best stories, mostly dealing with mysterious Dr. Sun. We begin with the search for the Chimera (#26-28), a device of power the Dr. Sun's minions are tracking down. We then find out the tragic story behind's Taj's muteness (#31), but the larger story arc her is towards the final confrontation between Dracula and Dr. Sun. There is a problem since Dr. Sun kill Dracula before that point (#39), but one of the advantages of having a vampire for the villain is that he can die and be brought back to his undead life. With the Dr. Sun storyline writer Marv Wolfman does what has to be the longest set up in the history of the Marvel universe. For years we were tantalized with a page of panels about Sun's minions doing strange things with vampires before we started having entire issues devoted to the machinations of the living brain. Perhaps the payoff was not as great as the years of anticipation (we are talking "living brain"), but the bits and pieces as Dracula was tested and cornered by Dr. Sun were excellent. By the time you get to the end of this volume Wolfman is already into the final giant story line with Domini, the bride of Dracula, and the Church of Damned.

All of "The Tomb of Dracula" issues in Volume 2 are scripted by Wolfman, penciled by Gene Colan and inked by Tom Palmer. If Wolfman was the perfect writer for this comic book then Colan was the perfect artist (when you look at the "Giant-Size Dracula" issues drawn by the Don Heck and Nestor Redondo this point will be underscored). I still tend to think that Palmer's inking was at its very best when he was working with Neal Adam's pencils but what he did will Colan is the proverbial close second. Reading the entire series again made me appreciate how these comics were character driven, making comparisons with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" not only obvious but accurate, and the nice thing about having these reprint volumes is that it is a lot easier to read "The Tomb of Dracula" now than taking the originals out of plastic.

Volume 1 of the "Essential Tomb of Dracula" contains issues #1-25 of "The Tomb of Dracula," along with a crossover story in "Werewolf By Night" #15 and the "Giant-Size Chillers" #1 story that introduced Lilith, Dracula's daughter. Volume 3 has "Tomb of Dracula" #50-70 and stories from "Tomb of Dracula Magazine" #1-4. I understand there is going to be a Volume 4, which hopefully would continue to reprint some of the stories from Marvel's black & white "Dracula Lives" magazine. Obviously you need to get all three volumes of the "Essential: Tomb of Dracula" so that you can appreciate how Wolfman, Colan, and Palmer crafted the best "fear" comic book since the days of E.C.

5 out of 5 stars One of the high points in comic book history.......2005-01-03

Wolfman and Colon were really at their best when they were working on this series. Marv kept the series moving with tight characterization and nobody could draw Dracula like Gene: the bat fluttering on the breeze, the bat transformations, the face foating in the mist, and the overall imperial air. Unfortunately, they couldn't keep up with the work load and the giant-size issues were handled by others and weren't quite as good.

Book Description

Archimedes, the discoverer of the lever, said that if he had a place to stand, he could move the world. But, of course, there is no such place to stand. However, on April 27, 1521, a young monk from a small town in Germany declared before the powers of his day, who demanded that he take back his faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that his conscience was bound by the Word of God. "Here I stand," he declared.

A PLACE TO STAND summarizes the German reformer's life and topically treats his worldview, inspiring readers to delve deeper into the man whose contribution to the betterment of the world LIFE magazine in 2000 ranked as the third most significant of all time and the TORONTO GLOBE & MAIL ranked number two. Nearly five centuries after his time, we can see that Martin Luther indeed had a place to stand. And he did move the world.

1 out of 5 stars Unexamined.......2006-08-18

I was intersted in reading this book because like many others I wonder about the escalation of exposure in our society, with songs called "Promiscuous" clogging the airways and ankles no longer at all provacative. Have we lost something while gaining the freedom to display our innate sensuality?

However, this book failed to make much of an argument at all. It presented two opposing forces: the Bible, and our society, and did a very bad job explaining these. It seemed, rather, to work from two stereotypical mindsets. I found the Biblical passages overly literal, with no real scholarship applied to them, more just a sort of parroting, and found myself becoming defensive on the behalf of sensuality, which seemed to be getting a bum rap. Perhaps Nelly Furtado is not a notable advance in Western Culture, but surely some things are, and for every five or ten Nellys and Britneys, there is an Allen Ginsberg who would have been killed for love in an earlier time.

What really upset me about this book, however, was the not-very-well-hidden sexism. I went into the book expecting modesty to be something we might encourage in all people, but instead found it to be something we largely want to encourage in our women. Most of the biblical quotes seemed to deal with women and their roles, and many of the examples seemed to be at the expense of girls. As a woman, I am offended by the notion of virtue and modesty being a woman's responsibility, as if men a) have nothing to hide or b) have no control over their reactions to what women wear.

All in all, I found this book a very disappointing read and do not suggest buying it.

      5 out of 5 stars A fun read.......2002-09-16

Gene Wright's first attempt at fiction is an engaging success. Although lightweight story and an easy read, this book compares favorably with the best of the genre. The plot is just twisted enough and contains a handful of surprises. The dialogue is smooth and witty. The characters are likeable, but clearly Mr. Wright plans to develop them in books to come, because he doesn't grow them much in these 200 pages. I can recommend highly this book to anyone who enjoys a good crime story that can be enjoyably put away in one sitting.

Be careful because this book will keep you up all night. I couldn't put it down when I started reading.
That is my idea of good mystery. I look forward to next installment. Kudos to Gene Wright.

5 out of 5 stars An Ordinary Hero.......2002-01-24

Jerry Valdez has made a good life for himself and his family. He is well-qualified as a county sheriff and well-respected by the people who voted for him and by his collegues in other law enforcement positions. He likes being sheriff and has built a staff he can depend on and one that he has fatherly feelings toward. Then a crime occurs in his county that is shocking in its viciousness and one in which his young deputy is the victim. The reader knows Jerry will solve the crime and avenge the death of his protegee. As he proceeds to do this we learn methods of preventing jail breaks, dealing with the FBI, escaping attacks on his life and that of his family, and tracking the powerful evil behind the mayhem that has entered his life. We also learn about preparing good food, the best place to eat in South Dallas and what is wrong with Memphis barbeque. I liked Jerry because he is a man who cares about people and likes to help them. He instinctively knows how to take care of himself when forced into horrible events he could not have expected in his peaceful, rural part of Texas. Thank
goodness he does not allow himself to be corrupted by drug money. Instead he does his job with integrity and stubborn pursuit. He solves the crime legally when that might not seem possible and only pushes the reader a little bit to believe the ending. This mystery also lets the reader into the Valdez family with a husband and wife who love and support one another and a son and daughter who are pleasant company and independent children. The family of an ordinary man who is also a hero. I look forward to spending more time reading about Jerry Valdez.

      5 out of 5 stars Don't mess with Valdez.......2002-01-14

Sheriff Jerry Valdez is a friendly, easygoing, Tex-Mex
eating, family man, well liked in Kendall County, tucked
away in the picturesque Texas Hill Country. If you're a
friend of Jerry's, you will be a friend for life, but if
you forget what a friend he is and try to one up him, or
snow him with your fancy education, you will find out fast
enough who you're dealing with. There's more to Jerry than
      meets the eye.

If you kill one of his deputies, and threaten his family,
the full measure of Sheriff Valdez is sure to rise before
you. It will not long be he who is threatened, but you who
must Run, Run ... If Valdez lacks any talent to bring you
down, he has friends to fill in the gaps, so that justice
will prevail, one way or the other.

The action in this short novel takes off like a rocket and
proceeds cojones out to an interesting conclusion. It was
      lots of fun to read.

      5 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2002-01-09

I heard about this novel from a friend and was interested enough to buy it. Wright's narrative caught my attention immediately and did not lose it until the last word. I hated for the story to end, but it was concluded nicely. I found the story very interesting, very realisitic, and well told. I felt so bad for the young deputy sheriff that I almost cried, and I was delighted that the Sheriff, Jerry Valdez, was bright and innovative enough to bring the killer to justice. The serious question Wright builds into the novel about what must happen when evil is so great that the law cannot protect the innocent sets the novel on a higher plane than most thrillers and makes the novel as up-to-date as the present search for terrorists. At one point, the sheriff admits that he would like to ignore the criminal Adolpho Guerra, to leave him alone. But, as the sheriff has to admit, Guerra will not leave HIM alone. We'd all like to leave evil alone. But sometimes evil will not leave us alone. The characters are realistic, witty, and consistently interesting. Wright is an exciting, realistic, powerful writer. I look forward to more from him.

This is a great book detailing the stories of the 465th Bomb Group Crews that went down over Ploesti. My grandfather, Jarmar Jancarik, was on one of the crews that was shot down on 6 June 44 (D-Day). The story of his plane, the Hells Belle, being shot down and his capture are included in the book. Most of the information Moxley uses was acquired from the declassified Missing Air Crew Reports and other historical documents. This book serves as a testament to the bravery of all those who flew missions into occupied europe

In the video "Bringing Down A Dictator," Miljenko Derata, the director of a Belgrade group called Civic Initiatives, explains how he received funding from the US human rights organization, Freedom House, to print and distribute 5,000 copies of Gene Sharp's book, From Dictatorship to Democracy: A Conceptual Framework for Liberation. OTPOR also got hold of Sharp's main three-volume work, ''The Politics of Nonviolent Action.'' They translated this into a Serbian language notebook, which was called the ''OTPOR User Manual.''

5 out of 5 stars This book could change your mind about nonviolence.......2004-09-11

As a military officer I studied and implemented violence for twenty-six years. Thanks to the movie "Friendly Persuasion" and my introduction to Quakers, I began to wonder if there wasn't a better way. That eventually brought me to Gene Sharp's book.

The first volume is rather short and summarizes. It is well worth the read. The second volume is rather dull from a reading standpoint but very necessary. Probably only an academe or tactician could really get enthused about it. The third volume is a good read. I found it very informative and useful.

Before reading this book, my answer to peaceniks would have been that the only true peace was that of the battlefield -- when everything is quiet and dead. I imaged nonviolence as capitulation. Now I see it as conflict by other means: a means of struggle requiring high courage, strict discipline, and thoughtful strategy.

I believe that two conditions are required for nonviolence to succeed: 1) there must be sufficient information flow between the populations of the nonviolent group and the aggressor group, and 2) some proportion of the aggressor group must be able to identify with members of the nonviolent group. If news of the struggle never circulates, bureaucracy can structure violence to continue indefinitely; if the aggressors see others as less than animals, the violence will also continue without end.

In violent struggle at least 50% of the participants lose. Sometimes the costs are so high that everybody loses. In nonviolent struggle, at most 50% of the participants lose and often not so severely. Sometimes both sides seem to come out ahead.

Emotionally, I'm still very much in touch with the hubris of violence. Intellectually, nonviolence offers strategies and approaches not otherwise available. Both those who extol nonviolence and those who denigrate it as folly should read this book. Otherwise, I think they speak from the most desperate ignorance.

Gene Sharp's The Politics of Nonviolent Action is a landmark study of nonviolence in three volumes: Power and Struggle, The Methods of Nonviolent Action, and The Dynamics of Nonviolent Action. Power and Struggle begins with an analysis of the nature of political power. Sharp, Senior Scholar at the Albert Einstein Institution, reveals that political power is not intrinsic to rulers but derives exclusively from citizens. Thus political power requires social support. And therein lies the key to nonviolent action: "Political power disintegrates when people withdraw their obedience and support" (pg. 63). Next Sharp attempts to correct some common "misconceptions" about nonviolence. Among these corrections, he insists: "Success with nonviolent action does not require (though it may be helped by) shared standards and principles, a high degree of community of interests, or a high degree of psychological closeness between contending groups" (pg. 71). Finally, Sharp outlines a brief history of nonviolent action, from plebeian noncooperation in ancient Rome to modern movements like the Czechoslovakian civilan resistance of 1968. Power and Stuggle is an important step in the study of nonviolent political change and an indispensable reference for its practice. However, many scholars and activists criticize Sharp's otherwise execellent model for its deevaluation of nonviolence's spiritual dimension. All societies will inevitably require change not only at the political level, but also the social. And to believe political change will, in turn, affect a social change is to deny Sharp's model of political power, which states that the political power of states resides in their citizens. Therefore, in order to affect social change it becomes necessary to utilize methods of "shared standards and principles," that is, to utilize the spiritual dimension of nonviolent action. Indeed the required depth of spirituality appears proportionaly equal to the depth of social change to be affected. If government is the will of the people manifest, then the nonviolent activist must change the will of the people, not the government. When viewed in this light we see why both Gandhi's and King's movements ultimately failed. Both successfuly affected political change but were assassinated before social change could be completed. Thus the strained relations between Hindus and Muslims in the Indian subcontinent and the remaining emotional segregation between blacks and whites in our own nation. Is then the aim of nonviolence not to change the politics but the people, or will Sharp's model work to successfully affect social change?
