Gorgeous photographs, excellent information, easy to use.......1998-11-24
This book is a very useful guide to a large variety of Florida plants, as well as a superb collection of truly stunning photographs. It can be used for simple visual identification, but its organization by family and its binomial key make it user-friendly for the botanist as well.

Book Description
Inside the Dzanga Sangha Rain Forest follows a team of scientists, artists, and filmmakers as they search for the elusive lowland gorilla, rare birds, leopards, a universe of insects, not to mention the powerful elephants for whom the forest is named. The team is guided by local BaAka people through elephant dung, swarms of sweat bees, and unexpected swamps as they explore and record everything they can about the rain forest. Readers learn about the rain forest, from the layers of forest canopy and the lives of the BaAka to practical skills, such as what to do if approached by a gorilla, and how to eat a termite. At the end of the expedition, the team sends back 6,000 pounds of specimens and materials and an incomparable first-hand account of life in the rain forest in order to create a unique walk-through exhibit, complete with sounds and smells.

Inside the Dzanga-Sangha Rain Forest.......2002-06-14
Inside the Dzanga-Sangha Rain Forest is a spectacular book that follows a team of twenty scientists, artists, photographers, and filmmakers, into the heart of Africa in their search to find the essence of the rain forest. Guided by the BaAka people, a local tribe, the team spends two months filming and recording the beauty of Africa. They trudge through elephant dung, swarms of "sweat" bees, and thigh-deep flood plains, or bai as it is called in the national language of Sango, to collect items for a unique walk-through rain forest exhibit in New York City. In summary, this book takes readers on a vicarious trip through the rain forest so they can experience its beauty, meet its inhabitants, and learn practical survival skills such as gathering honey, eating termites, and playing basketball BaAka style. Regardless of age, you will find fun and adventure between the covers of Inside the Dzanga-Sangha Rain Forest!
Exceptional and Exciting: A Rain Forest Experience.......2000-04-15
You may not have recently toured the rain forests of Central Africa, but you can enjoy the lush photographs and readable text about this facinating corner of the world, the Dzangu-Sangha Rain Forest. I am a lover of African lore and found this book to use in my class. My students and I have eaten it up. We marveled at the marvelous pictures and were fascinated by the facts and information we found in the text. We all loved the information about driver ants that can be used to close up wounds that formerly required stitiches. The BaAka people and their customs are carefully documented with care and with dignity. Three sections of ninth graders who have been studying Afrian literature and folklore adored this book. To boot, my own kids, ages 5-13, have poured over the book during family reading hour. I recommended our high school library acquire a copy for student use. It is incredibly readable and suitable for a large audience. It is not to be missed.

Book Description
Fragile kingdoms of innumerable organisms and rich beauty, forests today are both our most plentiful and our most endangered natural resource. Understanding their workings and how to sustain them is imperative to ensuring the future of humanity. John Berger urges us to learn what can be done to preserve these treasures, and he offers here a compelling guide to the complex issues surrounding forest preservation.
An expanded and revised version of Berger’s bestselling Understanding Forests, Forests Forever offers a clear and readable survey of forest history and management. Berger draws upon diverse sources in law, ecology, economics, politics, and anthropology to argue that ecology, rather than the marketplace, should be the driving force behind forest management. Historical case studies of forests worldwide support this contention, the book reveals, as does the history of governments’ forest policy. Keeping pace with today’s issues, Berger critically evaluates government policy over the last seven years, including a contrast between the destructive policies of the Bush Administration and model programs instituted by the Canadian Boreal Initiative and others. Ultimately, he offers us the guiding principles of sustainable forestry as an answer to the ever-increasing demand for wood products.
Anchoring the account are galleries of breathtaking full-color images of trees, forest, wildlife, and other forestry subjects taken by the world’s leading nature photographers. A concise and wholly readable account, Forests Forever issues a call to arms for all those concerned with preserving and managing the world’s forests today.

Description:
Heritage trees (HTs) play pertinent ecological-landscaping roles in cities, yet the few known studies are mainly descriptive or resource inventories. This paper explores the intertwined natural and cultural spatial associations between trees (species, dimensions and age) and city (landscape impact, urban fabric, district history and landuse), assessing the integrated city-tree complex at the macro-scale. The study area includes eight main built-up districts (covering 116 km^2) of Guangzhou, a compact and major city in South China. A survey of historical and inventory records identified 348 HTs which encompass the city's officially recognized HTs. Principal component analysis (PCA), Jaccard Index of Similarity (JIS), and other statistical tests helped to unravel spatial associations. The 25 HT species, compared to 254 species in the city's entire urban forest, are dominated by four common species. The number of HTs increases with district age of 25-2500 years. The more stressful and cramped roadside habitat accommodates more HTs, followed by spacious park, and intra-lot interstitial spaces in education, government-institution, and religious sites. The HTs are dominated by the 100-200-year age bracket, with few older trees, indicating a generation gap and the inability of old districts to preserve older trees. Park and religious sites accommodate more of the oldest and largest trees. Roadside contains more wide-crown trees mainly due to effective protection from motor vehicles by the inner bicycle lane. District is indicated by JIS as the major determinant of species variations, with landuse playing a secondary role. Large trees polarise into normal and degraded tree forms due to physical site constraints. Tall-wide and short-wide tree forms with high landscape impact contribution dominate landscape impacts. PCA extracted three factors that explained 71.9% of the variations, namely age-dimension, potential growth, and district history. Increasing compactness and the present management regime may fail to sustain the HT stock and deprive the city of HT precursors. The concept of ecological brinkmanship and transgenerational arboriculture are proposed to enhance HT conservation.

Book Description
When the research team led by Eric Simonson found George Mallory's body high on Everest in 1999, the news made headlines around the world-and ignited intense debate. One question, at least, remained unanswered: What happened to Mallory's partner, Andrew Irvine? In 2001, Simonson's team returned in search of answers among the high camps on Everest's north side. Detectives on Everest is the story of this second expedition, and what it found, including new archeological findings from the early British and Chinese climbs on Everest. It is also the story of an exciting rescue, one that led the climbers to make some important discoveries about their own values. As Dave Hahn , Andy Politz, Tap Richards, and Jason Tanguay, accompanied by Phu Nuru and Fu Dorji, were preparing for their own summit attempt, they discovered that five climbers from two other expeditions were in dire straits on the mountain . Abandoning their ascent plans, the team pulled off one of the highest, most technically difficult rescues in history even as other climbers passed them by, refusing to help.
Although the rescue effectively ended the expedition, it renewed the team's respect for the mountain and its history. It also earned four of the team members and two of the sherpas the David A. Sowles Memorial Award, which the American Alpine Club bestows upon "mountaineers who have distinguished themselves, with unselfish devotion at personal risk or sacrifice of a major objective, in going to the assistance of fellow climbers imperiled in the mountains."
But the story does not end there. Surprisingly, the most tantalizing clue to the mystery of Mallory and Irvine was uncovered not on the mountain-but in Beijing. Shortly after the expedition ended, Hemmleb and Simonson traveled to China to interview climbers from the 1960 and 1975 Chinese expeditions. What they were told might hold the key for future detectives on Everest.
Customer Reviews:
The Latest on the Fate of Mallory and Irvine.......2007-04-02
"Detectives on Everest" is unusual in the mountaineering literature associated with Everest in that it is not about pioneering some new route up the world's highest mountain. Instead, it is the expedition account of the 2001 return to Mount Everest by the team of historical detectives that found George Mallory's body in 1999.
The expedition did not succeed in its primary purpose, to locate the remains of Andrew Irvine, perhaps with a camera and recoverable images that might settle the question of whether Mallory and Irvine reached the summit of Everest in 1924. The expedition did search the Northeast Ridge of Everest, in the process locating many of the old high camps from British and Chinese expeditions and thereby clarifying some history. Sections on Mallory's climbing history in Britain and a superb collection of photographs, descriptions of artifacts, and a history of attempts on Everest via the Northeast Ridge provide some valuable context for the discussion of whether or not Mallory and Irvine were technically capable of reaching the summit of Everest in 1924. The bottom line here remains a question mark.
The most significant relevation may be an interview with the survivors of the 1960 Chinese Expedition, who used the Northeast Ridge and who may have found Irvine's body near one of their high camps. This interview leaves open the possibility that a future search might again locate Irvine's body.
A final section, in which expedition members diverted from a summit attempt to rescue several climbers in trouble on the Northeast Ridge, talks to both the ruthless ethics of climbing in the "death zone" at and above 28,000 feet and the wonder that earlier expeditions with far less equipment and technical expertise got as high as they did.
This book is recommended to fans of the continuing mystery of Mallory and Irvine, and to readers interested in the history of expeditions on Mount Everest.
To the reader.......2004-04-14
Dear reader,
Could you really believe that mountaineers climbing at 29000 fts. during nightime and on unknown terrain without torchlighs are able to reach the summitt of Everest? The point is this and, please, don't try to make me believe that Chineses' accurate report of terrain is genuine, because aerial surveys and photos were made in 1960 too and, moreover, mountaineers could have reached a point between the second step and the summit, but to summit in pitch dark seems too much even for the more optimistic.I'm astounded by the accuracy and by the affection that you, reader, seem to feel for Hemmleb's account: have I reached someone near Jochen or Eric? Maybe I'm not expert in history, but geography tells that South Tirol, that is Alto Adige is within the boundary of Italy, keep an atlas at hand and you'll see that this is not a nation represented at the United Nations Organization and that on Messner's passport it's stamped "Italy"... There are many people in Italy who wants the entire northern part of the Country separated from the rest of us: Would you call an Everest ascent from a Milanese an ascent of Padanian Country? Let me tell you that these particularisms in a time of a united Europe sounds a little parochially-minded and anti-historic. But, I was forgetting... Hemmleb is from Germany, so he is sensible to other German speaking people...
Careful research, careless readers.......2004-04-14
Giancarlo Passarini's review (see below) shows an undercurrent problem certain readers seem to have with the research Hemmleb et al. have done. Passarini doesn't like the possibility that the Chinese climbed Everest in 1960, so he attacks the author and suspects that statements approving of the Chinese claim were a "trade-off" for the information Hemmleb and Simonson received about Irvine. Nonsense! Passarini ignores that "Detectives" is very careful in its analysis of the 1960 Chinese expedition, including qualifying comments such as "Here is the story as the three (Chinese) later put it on record" (p. 156) or "Of the terrain (between the Second Step and the summit) the Chinese could provide only verbal descriptions" (p. 157) - all a far cry from flatly stating "the Chinese did it", as Passarini thinks the book has done. If careful, distinguished research is treated this way, the fault doesn't lie with the author but with the reader. (As for the issue of "South Tyrol", a more impartial view of its history and semi-autonomous status is advisable, but is beyond the scope of this review)
Marking Time While Finding History.......2002-12-01
This is a most significant book which fills in much of the detail about the early British expeditions to the North Face of Mount Everest. Yes, the 2001 climb failed to locate Irving's body and with it the missing cameras which may determine for once and all whether or not Mallory and Irvine did reach the summit in June of 1924. But the 2001 Expedition did uncover the several of the camps used by these early climbs and Hemmleb recounts how this makes our understanding of these early expeditions much more complete than it previously was. For instance, Hemmleb describes how it can now be determined that Mallory did not relocate his high camp, a point of great interest to and debate among Everest scholars for decades. And, what is most crucial in this book is Hemmleb's description of the patient and persistent work with veterans of the earlier Chinese climbs which has made the future location of Irvine's remains much more likely -- including a revelation that the Chinese had located Irvine's body not just in 1975 but also in 1960. Jochen Hemmleb is to be congratulated for his clear and concise writing, his brilliant scholarship, and the dogged devotion which keeps bringing him back to uncover ever more secrets, however reluctantly surrendered, on the 1921, 1922, and 1924 British expeditons. And this book, in short, is a necessary read for all with even a peripheral interest in the history of Mount Everest and of these early expeditions. Bravo, Jochen!
Detectives on Everest.......2002-10-21
After reading "Into Thin Air" I wanted more.....but this book was nothing but a "he said, she said". Very poor writing style and the facts were not even correct. 12 people perished in 1996...wonder about the other facts....a historian?

99% of what you'll need........2007-08-30
For everyone but the most experienced technician this service manual will get you through almost every concievable task.
A perfect companion to the Bentley manual is the book 101 Performance Projects for Your BMW 3 Series 1982-2000 (Motorbooks Workshop)
Every E36 owner should have both books on their bench.
Very Basic.......2007-07-24
If you don't know what a screwdriver looks like, then this is the book for you. There are helpful pictures of basic handtools just in case you don't know what they look like. Very disappointed, no more information than a Haynes Manual. Should have a statement that reads Suitable for ages 8 to 10 on the front cover.
BMW E36 Service Manual review.......2007-07-16
very informative. i learned so much about my car that i can now easily understand whatever the mechanic is explaining. And I've also tried to do things on my own, by carefully following specific instructions in the book, which are easy to comprehend.
An enthusiast's bible... .......2007-07-06
This is a large( 60mm thick! ) book, aimed at people who have more of an interest in their Z3 than just driving it with the roof down.
It covers so much about the Z3 in great detail; it is probably more suited to mechanically minded people.
All areas of dismantling, trouble-shooting and repair are covered from head gaskets to air bag removal, from stripping door cards to cleaning break lines etc.
The downside:
I'm driving a 2.0L, 6 cylinder model which was only available in Europe (i think?)for a about 18 months and isn't included in this American publication. However, all topics covered appear to be the same (except, of course for the fact that my car is right hand drive!!)
Conclusion:
If the owners manual just doesn't cut it with the amount of information you need, then this book will answer all your Z3 queries with ease.
I'm satisfied with my purchase.
Missing a lot of important information.......2007-05-26
Looking to work on the convertible top? Diagnose electrical problems? Figure out how remove that zany body trim to get to what you need to repair? This book may not be much help. If you are hoping for more than you can readily find on web forums, you will be disappointed. I purchased this book because the table of contents said the convertible top was covered, and it did contain 10 pages which started: "Diagnosis of the convertible top and the rollover protection systems are beyond the scope of this book. Your authorized BMW dealer has the proper diagnostic equipment and tools to carry out these tasks." Then the pages have diagrams that can be found on the internet, indicating a few removal and adjustment points, but lacking even a clear picture of all of the components, much less than is required for even a meaningful diagnosis of simple problems, or to replace or adjust a simple component. Very disappointing. This book would be good for a beginner, that needs help with the service I and II steps, or to an expert performing a complete engine rebuild, who already knows exactly what they are doing and merely needs the order and a checklist. For someone in between, many critical steps are missing or unclear, for many important tasks.

Decent, but not always helpful..........2004-06-22
It's almost a ritual now for me when I buy a car; I always pick up a copy of the haynes manual for it as well. As usual, the haynes manual is very good for certain tasks you need to do, but for more complicated problems, and even some of the most common things there are no illustrations to guide you through the process. Sometimes things can be really vague as well, mentioning to simply "remove
part" when it's honestly not so simple. Aside from those flaws, the book helped me in many scenarios and is worth the few bucks it costs. I'm going to try out the bentley manual next however as it's much more in depth.
Beware if you are a Z3 owner!!!!.......2004-03-16
I bought this manual to do maintenance on my 96 Z3. What a mistake. Even basic things like the photo for the oil filter and the brake rotors are incorrect. If you own a 3 series, I guess it is a fair book for the price. But if you are looking for a Z3 repair manual, keep looking.

Reduntant and uninformative.......2004-06-29
I was hoping for an inside look into the M Roadster but instead I found a book full of magazine clippings. Sure, they took the time to collect some articles written by magazines reviewing the car over the 6 years it was in production. But nothing to make the book worth $20+. I agree with the author of the other review "Common Knowledge". I wouldn't waste your money on it...sure felt like a waste to me.
Common knowledge.......2004-05-23
For those that have been following the Z3, this book does not provide anything new if you have subscriptions to some of the more popular car magazines. Every page is a copy of an article on this or that magazine. The book only serves to reinforce the already common knowledge (for most of us anyways) that this car: drives like a roadster, looks like a roadster, it is a roadster!! I only give it two stars because I was expecting a book with all the nitty-gritty information (IE. options available each year, engine introduction dates, etc).

Good information on BMW history.......2000-11-07
Quite good book, but it will not give you information about all BMW cars. You will find a lot from BMW history and highlits of best BMW cars ever produced. I've been very surprised by not finding BMW Isetta there. Lots of information and pictures on 1600,1800,2000 and '02 series.

Book Description
David Monagan is a restless, middle-aged father of three who for years has dreamed of relocating from the USA to Ireland, the land of his forebears.
In his elegantly written, often hilarious narrative, Monagan describes his family's evolving struggle to come to terms with life in a strange land. The result is an honest, heartfelt and penetrating portrait of a contemporary Ireland that is so often portrayed through the wistful lens of cliches that no longer apply.
Jaywalking with the Irish is a tale of revelations - about donkey carts transformed into BMWs, about great blessings of warmth sometimes laced with begrudgery, about what happens to a family that ditches stability for the tricky task of fitting in abroad.

Jaywalking withe the Irish........2007-08-27
So far, I find it very humorus and well written. I have been very busy and unable to complete the book but I am anxious to complete.
I'm enjoying but am giving up on this one...........2007-03-16
I'm surprised no one else mentioned this. The type-face is extremely small throughout this book. In fact, it is so small that I find it completely exhausting to read.
I don't even have glasses, yet feel like I need them every time I sit down and read 10 pages of this book.
Strange decision by publisher. I'm enjoying but have decided to give up on this one.
Captivating AND Informative.......2007-01-04
It is not your typical - this is what to expect when you live abroad - book. It describes the personal experiences of one family in a very captivating way. The books deals with the emotions, the differences in mentality, and not so much with detailed technical aspects of moving to a different continent. Food for thought and fun to read.
A brilliant blend of humor, wit, travel and history.......2006-01-30
I delighted in the armchair journey with David Monagan and his family as they embarked on their adventure to Ireland. It's refreshing to read a travel memoir that gets past the stereotypes to relate what's truly special about Ireland and its people.
This book is a must read for anyone who has ever longed to leave the familiar to take on new challenges and adventures. It also offers lots of delicious nuggets along the way and inspiration to book the next flight to Ireland.
Thought-provoking if uneven look at today's Irish disruptions.......2005-12-22
Monagan offers a sobering take on how Ireland accepts and rejects his attempts to relocate there in the early 00's. His observations on petty theft, killer (literally) traffic, suburban blight, environmental destruction, binge drinking, relocated romantics, and boorish behavior certainly should correct the sentimentality of many visitors to his adopted city of Cork and its environs. It's rare, it still seems, to find a book outside of the Irish presses that interrogates today's gritty attitudes amidst an unsettlingly glitzy urban Ireland outside of Belfast or Dublin. The book works best when tackling the changes Ireland finds itself in over especially the last ten or fifteen years. Monagan's very good on how Irish conversation draws out the naive outsider to reveal a weakness while the native conversant remains protected, watching but not revealing. He also plumbs the puzzling indifference shown by many Irish today to the loss of their heritage as foreign capital invades and conquers in the name of profit once again.
What hobbles this account are a variety of structural and factual stumbles as he recounts his move. First, how he and his family survive, after renting out their Connecticut house and relocating, remains too unclear, given that David has only free-lance writing to pay the exorbitant food, tuition, tax, and housing bills that anyone living in Ireland is sadly familiar with. How his wife fares with her work is also left too vague. Secondly, parts of this book read as if he inserted his free-lance work (on the Kinsale Old Head golf course monstrosity and on the volunteer rescue brigades) as chapters here rather jarringly. Third, the facts behind the reason for the various pieces sculpture garden at Sneem, the confusion of Knock with Croagh Patrick, and the ignorance that he shows towards not bothering to find out the simple reason the local GAA field is called "Pairc Ui Choamh" show a superficial attention to telling details that a more thorough chronicler would have investigated.
To be fair, the author has corresponded with me since I originally posted this review, and noted, correctly, that to delve too "academically" into the pedantry behind the offhand Pairc remark, uttered by not the author but another man at the match, would take away from the anecdote and interfere with the telling of the whole incident. I agree, and stand corrected. By the way, the author has gone on to stay in Ireland, appear on talk shows, and to pursue his writing career, more power to him.
However, I respectfully wish that he'd have gone further into what could have been intriguing stories. For instance, he raises in one sentence a potentially illuminating example of rural Irish culture on Valentia Island but neglects to develop this further, leaving the reader deflated at the hasty end to a chapter and wondering why he bothered to bring it up, since his time spent exploring there remains enigmatic. Finally, the end of the book stutters and hesitates as he vacillates whether to return to the US for good in the wake of the 2001 attacks. The last portion rushes while the first part had taken its time exploring the first year there. The book ends less than neatly, not knowing when to stop the story. This may be appropriate in reflecting Monagan's divided loyalties, but it does not culminate in a well-crafted conclusion on the page.
I still recommend this as an antidote to the "I bought a B&B/farm and here are tales from the lovable locals I met" genre for its portrayal of anti-American sentiment, threatened cultural and ecological conditions, and intriguing if too brief scenes from rural Co Cork that add to the book's relevance. It's worth comparing to the nearly contemporaneously composed travelogue by British writer Pete McCarthy, "McCarthy's Bar," in its overlapping and concurrent Cork focus. And it recalls in its considerations of Northeast US-Irish upbringing that of another contemporary, Steve Fallon, whose Boston-meets-Connemara journey frames his book "Home with Alice." Like these, "Jaywalking" examines the attempt of Irish Americans to settle in reverse of the usual historical direction, and in its reminders of how delicate the values of Irish life become in an relentlessly consumer-driven and globalized existence into which Ireland has now plunged itself (nearly?) wholeheartedly.
