Book Description
How the Miami Hurricanes rose from a laughingstock to a college football legend-and reshaped American sports.
When fans think of college football, they think of Miami-the cool school with street cred that all the kids dream of playing for. A powerhouse unlike any other, they are a dynasty fueled not by individuals but by the aura of "The Miami Vice"-a swaggering, trash-talking, us-against-the-world mentality. But less than 25 years ago, the program faced extinction. Now, five national championships-and five different coaches-later, Miami is the preeminent football factory, boasting such high-profile NFL alumni as Michael Irvin, Ray Lewis, Warren Sapp, Jim Kelly, Vinny Testaverde, Clinton Portis, and Jeremy Shockey.
Nothing is typical about the 'Canes. Not the brutal, "voluntary" 6 a.m. workouts in July. Or the merciless drilling of teammates who show fear. Not the constant pressure from their Godfathers, the ex-Canes who want them to uphold the legacy-and will make them pay if they don't. And certainly not the reputation that has made the Hurricanes synonymous with excellence-even among superstar athletes. Now, an award-winning sportswriter gives us a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the Miami program-after more than ten years of special access as a former UM student and beat writer. This is the amazing story of how Miami has won more national championships over the last two decades than Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Florida State combined-and gone from near-death to dynasty.

Customer Reviews:
A must for serious 'Canes fans.......2007-08-05
If you are NOT a fan of the Miami Hurricanes, you should really be a sports junkie to invest the time in reading this. But if you are, this book will be endlessly entertaining, even though it's a little (maybe a lot) rough around the edges.
Story of The U.......2006-12-14
This is an "OK" book. If you want to know about Miami football, this book is a good start. It traces the history of the program, from its inception to the the first championship season in 1983, all the way to the end of the 2004 season. Along the way the reader encounters many of the players and personalities that made UM what it is. And from that perspective, it's a decent book.
However, even though I am a UM fan, I found it to be somewhat biased. Referring to the team as a "dynasty" is a bit much, especially in light of the team's recent struggles. UM had a nice run, but all teams have their rough stretches too. One could make the argument that USC or a few others are just as much of a "dynasty" as UM.
Still, it was easy reading, and it was mostly fun to read. But I warn anyone who is not a UM fan - you should not read this book, because you will get turned off by its favortism for the U. But for those who don't mind, it is informative, and helps you remember some of those championship seasons!
Three stars.
Biased, not at all objective, and fairly ignorant summary.......2006-02-24
Hmmm... let me guess... Bruce Feldman went to the University of Miami? He did? Shocking!
The only reason I continued reading this book is because I am a big college football fan. The book goes something like this...
Feldman spends a few hundred pages defending the thuggery, classlessness, and corruption that is the University of Miami football program. It is a boring and pathetic defense, in which he blames administrators (wow, people actually want to emphasize academic integrity and sportsmanship?), the media (EVERYONE is just out to get the "U"!) and America (they hate us because we're black). Feldman, fess up: Miami is a pure embarrassment not only to college football, but to anybody with a degree from "Suntan U". Move on, folks. Some things just don't deserve a defense-- Miami football is one of them.
(Also, try to avoid listening to this guy whine when he's on ESPN. Brutal.)
An entertaining look at Miami's football program.......2005-11-10
This book describes the history (mostly recent) of the football powerhouse of the University of Miami Hurricanes. The author, Feldman, describes the beginnings of the Cane attitude, the former players and how they still feel part of the team, the problems that the team and the program have gone through, and the misperceptions. There won't be any incredible insights in the book, but it is a fun, entertaining, easy read. Good for a long plane ride.
Rene Ortiz' Review.......2005-09-21
I ordered the book an I had it in my hands within 3 business days. Excellent service. I would definitely recommend this seller 100%. The book is great; it tells great stories about players, coaches and the program itself. It is amazing how the U became a powerhouse.

Book Description
Ever wonder just what a million of something means? How about a billion? Or a trillion?
Customer Reviews:
Nice illustrations.......2007-03-11
I got this book with my five-year-old in mind, but all of my two-year-olds and three-year-old also found it engaging. The illustrations are colorful and whimsical without being overwhelming or chaotic.
I think this book is probably best suited for slightly older children as some of the examples were not familiar to my children. For example, my children have never been in a stadium, so that example was a little abstract for them.
Overall a good book and an excellent way to introduce the concept a million.
Helped my kid conceptualize numbers.......2006-09-03
The beautiful artwork and kid-freindly examples captivated my 5-year old daughter. Genuinely helped her better understand how big a million is - and, how much bigger a billion and a trillion are. A lovely addition to a classroom, but also perfect for your home library as well!
One in a Million.......2003-04-30
This picture book is a great pairing of engaging children's literature, detailed illustrations and a deep math concept. I love the way that Schwartz and Kellogg bring this book to life!
I love Kellogg's illustrating! I would just love to jump right into the pages and be a part of all the action. His characters are drawn with such unique faces. And each page is filled with numerous details and endless nooks and cranies. Each page begs to be explored over and over.
If you have never enjoyed a book illustrated by Steven Kellogg now is the time!
The writing in this particular book is also very well done. The little facts about the number 1 million are really interesting. For instance it would take a fish bowl the size of a city harbor to hold a million goldfish!
This book really helps kids and adults understand a very abstract concept. How many of us really have a good grasp on how much a million really is? This book definitely puts it in perspective!
Read it once and you'll have to read it again and again!
How Much Is A Million?.......2003-03-20
Our class liked this book. We thought it was hilarious and gave a wonderful picture of how much a million really is. The kid tower was very imaginative and was an excellent example of a million, billion, and trillion. David M. Schwartz has a fantastic imagination. This book is great for little kids, because it shows there are numbers greater than a hundred. It's language is easy for kids to understand, and it contains many amazing facts.
However, older students dislike it, because it was too fictional. We felt it didn't explain these concepts well enough for us. Overall, we wouldn't recommend it for grades higher than fourth grade.
How Much is a Million By David M. Schwartz.......2002-10-23
I really enjoyed this book and I like the way David M. Schwartz used kids as an example of measurement. I thought the story was cute and I think young kids will really enjoy this. This is a story that I read a lot when I was in elementary. The story shows a very creative out look on counting and makes a million look like a humongous number. I think kids can really learn from that and even makes it kind of fun to learn. Sometimes I even like to read this book over because it really is a fun book to read. The illustrations are also very good and I think they definitely add to the creativity of this book. I really enjoyed looking at them.
Customer Reviews:
It's great. Buy if you want to sell products via mail order.......1997-09-27
This is one of the guru's of direct mail. He started and sold 2 companies, then bought them back (Hennikers is the current one). He speaks from great authority and does not hold back any secrets.
This is the guy who runs those ads for $4.99 Swiss Army knives in the Wall Street Journal. And, he clearly explains why he does so (to build his in-house list). He also explains all the profitability ratios, etc.
I have heavily underlined this book. He has an interesting story to tell (he's an emigrant from Europe to South America to the U.S., to MBA school, to a corporate job, to his own business).
His opinions resonate throughout this book and leaves no doubt how to do anything. This is a great book.
