Book Description
This best-selling majors ecology book continues to present ecology as a series of problems for readers to critically analyze. No other text presents analytical, quantitative, and statistical ecological information in an equally accessible style. Reflecting the way ecologists actually practice, the book emphasizes the role of experiments in testing ecological ideas and discusses many contemporary and controversial problems related to distribution and abundance. Throughout the book, Krebs thoroughly explains the application of mathematical concepts in ecology while reinforcing these concepts with research references, examples, and interesting end-of-chapter review questions. Thoroughly updated with new examples and references, the book now features a new full-color design and is accompanied by an art CD-ROM for instructors. <P>The field package also includes
The Ecology Action Guide, a guide that encourages readers to be environmentally responsible citizens, and a subscription to
The Ecology Place (www.ecologyplace.com), a web site and CD-ROM that enables users to become virtual field ecologists by performing experiments such as estimating the number of mice on an imaginary island or restoring prairie land in Iowa. For college instructors and students.
Customer Reviews:
Scarily good.......2005-04-05
As a layperson with next-to-no knowledge of the subject, nor any maths, algebra or statistics, I thought I'd have a lot of trouble with this book.
And yes, I did have some trouble, and yes, I would really have liked to have had a tutor and classmates to help me through the exercises.
But even so I got a great deal from it, it has lead me to read scientific papers, it has prompted me to investigate higher education possibilities - and it has made me extremely grateful for scientists!
Thanks!

Book Description
Measuring Behaviour is a guide to the principles and methods of quantitative studies of behavior, with an emphasis on techniques of direct observation, recording, and analysis. In the new edition, all sections have been updated and revised, particularly those dealing with the technology of recording behavior, and there are new sections on regression and multivariate statistics. As with the first edition, the authors strive for brevity and clarity of presentation.
Customer Reviews:
Concise, clear reference.......2000-08-10
This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in the study of human or non-human behavior in lab or field settings. The authors pack nothing but the vital basics in this guide. They cover topics such as research design (sample sizes) and data analysis (parametric vs. nonparametric stats). Reading this book is a great use of your time if you're considering research on animal behavior.
A perfect introduction.......2000-05-28
This book is a perfect introduction to the field of behavioral data collection. I purchased this book for my first behavioral study of captive primates and it was extremely helpful. If you have never conducted research in this area, this book is a must have.

Lab Guide.......2005-10-03
The lab guide is very helpful for the lab. It was very specific and detailed.
An excellent manual for teaching decriptive embryology.......2001-05-02
I witnessed the birth of the first edition of this book when I was still a college student, and have seen its transformation to suit the needs of each new era. The book offers fundamental principles in descriptive embryology. I hoped to see more on the expperimental aspect of the subject. I also wished to see the embryology of more of the animal phyla (eg. fruit fly, zebra fish) included.
An Embryology Lab Instructor's Comments.......2000-04-28
I have used this book in my course for four years. Typically one-hundred students per year are enrolled in my course. The quality of the photomicrographs is excellent. My only criticisms of the micrographs are that 1.) The sequence of the photomicrographs would be enhanced if they were arranged in a developmental sequence. Presently, the student must flip pages constantly to view all slides relevant to a particular developmental stage. 2.) There are not enough sagittal sections of the chick embryos. 3.) 96 hour chick embryos, instead of pig embryos might be an improvement. The text is good, although not quite as thorough as the Matthews lab manual was.

Badly Needed Advice to the Young Experimentor.......2007-01-03
Students are taught to do expeiments in college, but these are carefully planned with the procedure and the results well tested. As the students move towards a graduate degree, they are expected to begin to do research of an original nature where neither the procedure nor the results are known in advance. This is a big step, and in general there has been little practical advice on how the student should proceed, just what is expected of him, how he is to work with his major professor, even how to know when he has found something.
This book, according to the author, is the result of a dinner with some fellow scientists where the wine flowed freely. They were lamenting about the differences in what students were being taught and the way that science was actually practiced.
The book lays out what happens to a real project. It begins with the first step of defining the problem to be studied, conducting research on what's been done on that problem, defining the experiments, controls, experimenting, confirming, peer review, using the results for predictions, and finally continuing the developmental effort into the future.
This is not a large book, but it provides a wealth of knowledge of the real world that the academic is preparing to enter. It is written in a light and entertaining style that doesn't hide the fact that the author has 'been there, done that.'
Highly Recommended!

Experimental Design and Data Analysis for Biologists
ASIN: 1857281322 |
Book Description
This illustrated textbook for biologists provides a refreshingly clear and authoritative introduction to the key ideas of sampling, experimental design, and statistical analysis. The author presents statistical concepts through common sense, non-mathematical explanations and diagrams. These are followed by the relevant formulae and illustrated by worked examples. The examples are drawn from all areas of biology, from biochemistry to ecology and from cell to animal biology. The book provides everything required in an introductory statistics course for biology undergraduates, and it is also useful for more specialized undergraduate courses in ecology, botany, and zoology.
Customer Reviews:
Readable book about statistics........2001-11-27
This book covers a dry subject in a way that hasn't put me to sleep. It uses practical examples more than just formulas to explain the ideas. It also deals with common problems with experimental design quite well.

Book Description
Ecological research and the way that ecologists use statistics continues to change rapidly. This second edition of the best-selling Design and Analysis of Ecological Experiments leads these trends with an update of this now-standard reference book, with a discussion of the latest developments in experimental ecology and statistical practice. The goal of this volume is to encourage the correct use of some of the more well known statistical techniques and to make some of the less well known but potentially very useful techniques available. Chapters from the first edition have been substantially revised and new chapters have been added. Readers are introduced to statistical techniques that may be unfamiliar to many ecologists, including power analysis, logistic regression, randomization tests and empirical Bayesian analysis. In addition, a strong foundation is laid in more established statistical techniques in ecology including exploratory data analysis, spatial statistics, path analysis and meta-analysis. Each technique is presented in the context of resolving an ecological issue. Anyone from graduate students to established research ecologists will find a great deal of new practical and useful information in this current edition.
