      Book Description

On hearing about the coming energy crisis and impending ecological collapse many people ask, "But what can I do?" Relocalize Now! provides the best answers to date.

This timely guide from the Post Carbon Institute analyses the full depth of the crisis of industrial civilization, outlines the centrality of the global economic system in this crisis, and then proposes a plan for the global relocalization of our way of life. It promotes the idea of people recreating local communities--or "outposts"--at the level of neighborhood and nation that can begin to build "parallel public infrastructures" for survival, along with ways of networking efforts together for wider support. It does this through presenting:

The book's innovative project ideas such as a community retirement fund and corporate disobedience--nonviolent ways to disengage from globalization--are supplemented by practical tools for relocalizing and examples of charter outposts from LA to Alaska and Toronto. With a glossary and an extensive resources section, Relocalize Now! contains all you need to build the alternative.

      Book Description

Can your company manage -- even encourage -- turbulence in ways that actually strengthen its competitive stance? Absolutely. In this work, top organizational psychologist Stanley Gryskiewicz argues that challenges to the status quo can be catalysts for creativity, innovation, and renewal and shows leaders how they can keep their company on the competitive edge by embracing a process he calls Positive Turbulence. Developed through the author's work with many of the world's leading companies over the course of thirty years, Positive Turbulence delivers proven methods for creating an organization that continuously renews itself through the committed pursuit of new ideas, products, and processes.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Stay Innovative.......2001-08-17

Positive Turbulence is a very practical guide to keeping your organization moving at a healthy pace and continuing to innovate in order to compete in today's ever-changing marketplace. The theories included can be easily applied and related to any organization with Positive or Negative turbulence. It's a fluid read that's over before you know it.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Guide for Leaders.......2001-02-20

Positive Turbulence is helpful for leaders at all levels of an organization. With theories and examples, the author promotes the need to see the world of work with fresh eyes and to learn from unexpected situations. As a well-known authority on creativity and innovation, Dr. Gryskiewicz provides convincing information about the value of using changing, often turbulent conditions, to shape a flexible organization, open to new ideas. A good source of practical approaches and lots of resources in an easy-to-read format--this is a good book to include in your leadership library.

5 out of 5 stars You'll come away embracing change, not avoiding it.......2000-10-07

Stan Gryskiewicz has a gift for telling a story. This makes his book, Postive Turbulence, a pleasure to read. More important, he has years of experience in helping organizations, teams, and individuals become more innnovative. This makes Positive Turbulence truly useful.

This optimistic, upbeat book stands out because of Gryskiewicz's ability to show how his ideas can be put into action. Pragmatic and practical, he shares his ideas and experience generously. Strategies such as "Focusing on the periphery as a source for innovation and renewal" come to life as a way of spotting technology shifts and marketplace trends.

As a psychologist and consultant, I work with R & D teams and with managers who need to become more effective, forward-looking leaders. This is a book I can and will recommend to my clients and to my colleagues.

5 out of 5 stars Real Innovation? Wow a,d How!.......2000-02-25

As a business man and entrepeneur for more than 40 years, I am forced to confess that this is the most "down to earth" high quality thinking book that came into my hands in many years. It shows from the very begining -and in each page- what real innovation is and should be in any organization operating in any country. It is written out of a life experience which obviously includes knowledge and hard extended atentive work (a good life!). It is not an "instant happening", like instant coffe and other much popular approaches to delicate and far reaching issues, accompanied by an extensive and highly practical "how to" hints and tools for each managerial level and position. Mr. Gryskiewicz, if you intend to keep on writting on the subject, it is not going to be easy to surpass this "Positive Turbulence" you generated. Angel Sanhueza, Executive Director, CPS International.

5 out of 5 stars Innovation Principles That Produce Results.......1999-12-22

POSITIVE TURBULENCE is enjoyable to read, logical in its structure but not stiff, and it really reflects the essence of 30 years of top-level insight into major organizations around the world. The author provides us with the best of this experience, and not all writers do this-they often try to withhold a few gems for the next book, making the current product less than it could have been.

It is our good fortune that the author has avoided this temptation. Rather, this book is a sincere sharing of a breakthrough experience that has lessons of value the reader can immediately put to productive use. I am one of those that tries on a lot of books, and few seem to fit; but POSITIVE TURBULENCE fits perfectly and, like a favorite, it will be enjoyed and appreciated for a lifetime.

        Book Description

Firms and entrepreneurs of all types--from microenterprises to multinationals--play a central role in growth and poverty reduction. Their investment decisions drive job creation, the availability and affordability of goods and services for consumers, and the tax revenues governments can draw on to fund health, education, and other services. The contribution they make to society depends largely on the way governments shape the investment climate in each location-through the protection of property rights, regulation and taxation, strategies for providing infrastructure, interventions in finance and labor markets, and broader governance features such as corruption. New sources of data from the World Bank highlight how investment climates vary dramatically across as well as within countries-and hence the potential for improvement. The World Development Report 2005: A Better Investment Climate for Everyone argues that improving the investment climates of their societies should be a top priority for governments. Drawing on surveys of nearly 30,000 firms in 53 developing countries, country case studies, and other new research, the Report explores questions such as: BLWhat are the key features of a good investment climate, and how do they influence growth and poverty? BLWhat can governments do to improve their investment climates, and how can they go about tackling such a broad agenda? BLWhat has been learned about good practice in each of the main areas of the investment climate? BLWhat role might selective interventions and international arrangements play in improving the investment climate? BLWhat can the international community do to help developing countries improve the investment climates of their societies? In addition to detailed chapters exploring these and related issues, the Report contains selected data from the World Bank's new program of Investment Climate Surveys, the Bank's Doing Business Project, and World Development Indicators 2004--an appendix of economic and social data for over 200 countries. Now in its twenty-seventh edition, the World Development Report offers practical insights for policymakers, business developers, economic advisers, researchers, and professionals in the media and in non-governmental organizations. It is also an essential supplement to economic and development courses in both academic and professional settings.

          Book Description

Complex water resource systems have been developed to ensure a continued safe and reliable water supply, however, due to climate variations these systems can be stressed and lead to water shortages and other problems. While many aspects of climate variations and their impact on water resources have been presented and published, the information is greatly dispersed and lacks a general overview. This report, Climate Variations, Climate Change and Water Resources Engineering, provides a broad overview of this important topic. It highlights the current knowledge about climate variations and change, discusses the impact on water resources systems, characterizes its predictability, and provides examples of its use in water resources management, planning, and design. This information is supplied through ten detailed case applications that examine the value and potential of climate information in water resources investigations. The first book to address climate issues from the water resources engineering perspective, this report will be beneficial to water resources planners and managers, flood and drought preparedness agencies, irrigation district managers, and any others that rely on water resources budgeting, planning, and systems operations.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Helpful resource that could be improved.......2007-05-14

The best thing about The Complete Games Trainers Play is its sheer size. Actually, it isn't nearly as big as some reviews imply. It is really around 1000 pages, not 2000+. And for some reason, a significant percentage of those pages are left blank. But even with that caveat, this is still a sizable resource.

If you are willing to devote 30+ minutes to finding an activity, you are sure to find one (or five) that are ideal for your training event. The fact that individual "games" can be removed from the ring binder is also helpful. This allows you to use the activities without carrying the whole book around, and to easily photocopy sheets for individual participants as some activities require.

However, there are some significant downsides. There is no real way to find appropriate activities without flipping through virtually the entire book. A large number of the activities aren't very good. And, most of the book is in a strange "typewriter" typeface that makes it look like it came from 1972. (Oddly, there are some pages which are randomly sprinkled through the book that use a different, more recent-looking typeface.)

To really upgrade its usefulness, Games . . . would benefit from taking a leap into the computer age. In other words, along with the printed book, a computer CD should be included. This could feature a good, searchable index, which is now lacking. It would also make it possible to print out games, and modify handouts on the computer to your organization's needs.

I've never bought any other resources like this, so I can't say if this is better or worse than others. I can say that in spite of the steep price and the drawbacks, I'm definitely glad I purchased it. It was very useful to me, and will be again in the future. However, there are a few simple steps the authors and publishers could take to greatly improve it.

          5 out of 5 stars Trainers Dream.......2006-11-03

This is a great tool of Trainers. Keeping your trainees engaged throughout the training is always a challenge. This tool give creative ways to assess retention of information. The games are great and the administrative forms and suggestions are wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of games here.......2004-12-08

People love playing games a lot more than listening to lectures; this is indisputable. I didn't like all of the games listed here, but so what. Several I found helpful and intend to use.

          2 out of 5 stars Not Impressed.......2003-09-30

Although there is a lot of information packed into this book, I was very unimpressed with the layout and visual design. It looks like it was typed up in 1970. The graphics are ancient and the layout is just one big binder with no cross-referencing or indexing available. To find a useful game, you have to sift through hundreds of pages. It really is a shame, as there are some clever games here to loosen up an audience.
Frankly for this price, I expected something a bit flashier and filled with reproducibles that I would want to copy and hand out. The way it looks now, and with it's unwieldy format, it's going to sit on my shelf.
If I hadn't spilled water on it, I would have sent it back for a refund.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Games Trainers Play.......2000-05-23

This book was helpful in planning an in-house managment training session. The book is divided into sections making it easy to locate games targeted at specific areas. The book is actually a 3" 3 ring binder. It is a large book, however, it does contain a wealth of information.

So climate chaos is impossible to ignore . . . or is it? Most governments have responded slowly, if at all. An attitude of denial means a reluctance to make the radi-cal changes needed.

This No-Nonsense Guide to Climate Change looks at the latest findings, explores the options, and explains why carbon emissions trading and nuclear power are not the answer. It calls for measures to clean up our act, cut energy use, and improve energy efficiency.

1 out of 5 stars A bit too much nonsense.......2007-04-19

Unfortunately the author has gotten some of the science wrong, stating for example that carbon is radioactive and mislabeling important graphs. Since this is the 3rd edition one would have hoped the editors would have glanced at the book since it was written in 2001. The author (an immigrant from India) has a very strong anti developed-world bias. He argues vehemently against carbon trading and offsets, not acknowledging that these mechanisms reduce CO2 buildup. He wants instead, I think, punishment to be meted out to the developed countries for their success and rewards to be given to developing countries for their lack of success. He does not appear to want emission controls on developing countries, but prefers that the developed world gift the developing world with free solar power plants. For a no-nonsense guide, there is too much of this nonsense.
I do like the chart on top of page 138 on tips to personally cut emissions (like becoming a vegetarian).

5 out of 5 stars Not "Bad Science" Anymore!.......2002-12-26

Even conservatives now admit that global warming is a reality and that it's primarily the result of fossil fuel use (see the EPA document on global warming published earlier this year). But the extent of the problem is only beginning to sink in. The twentieth century was the hottest century, the 1990s the hottest decade of the millennium, and 1998 the hottest year of the 1990s (we know this from analyzing atmospheric gases trapped in Arctic ice). And we're only feeling the effects of CO2 emissions from 35 years ago! The nasty effects of all the emissions since then haven't even kicked in yet. Moreover, global warming will also lead to "feedback"--the official term for extreme weather. Tornadoes out of season, violent thunderstorms and hail, droughts, floodings, blizzards: all of these are already occuring as wind currents and meterological conditions feel the effects of overall global warming.

Dinyar Godrej's *Climate Change,* a volume in the excellent "No-Nonsense" series, outlines the basic (and frightening!) facts about global warming, backing his claims up with a wealth of data and references. This makes his book a convenient (and affordable) resource for anyone who wants to get a handle on what's happening to the planet. But Godrej also offers some social, political, and personal suggestions for slowing down and hopefully reducing the human activity that creates global warming. Highly recommended. Read it, get scared, get angry, get working! And while you're at it, get rid of your SUV.

            Book Description

The objective of this book is to analyze the institutional barriers to implementing market-based climate policy, as well as to provide some opportunities to overcome them. The approach is that of institutional economics, with special emphasis on political transaction costs and path dependence.

Instead of rejecting the neoclassical approach, this book uses it where fruitful and shows when and why it is necessary to employ a new or neo-institutionalist approach. The result is that equity is considered next to efficiency, that the evolution and possible lock-in of both formal and informal climate institutions are studied, and that attention is paid to the politics and law of economic instruments for climate policy, including some new empirical analyses.

The research topics of this book include the set-up costs of a permit trading system, the risk that credit trading becomes locked-in, the potential legal problem of grandfathering in terms of actional subsidies under WTO law or state aid under EC law, and the changing attitudes of various European officials towards restricting the use of the Kyoto Mechanisms.

                Book Description

In the face of extreme weather events, desertification, and a rise in sea levels, governments and communities around the world increasingly recognize that the need to mitigate and adapt to climate change is urgent. The global agenda and negotiations focus on what governments, corporations, and institutions can do in the search for large-scale technological solutions. Yet women, men, and local communities all have roles, responsibilities, and interests that hold the potential either to harm or to benefit their environment.

This book considers the gendered dimensions of climate change. Ranging in scope from high-level global decisionmaking to local communities, the contributors examine the potential impacts of environmental degradation and change on vulnerable groups. They highlight the different vulnerabilities, coping strategies, and risks faced by men and women, and the socio-economic implications of changing livelihoods and insecurity. Examples of mitigation projects that have successfully integrated gender concerns are explored, as well as initiatives that have overlooked gender considerations and resulted in different outcomes for women and men.
