Book Description
Rivers are an inexhaustible source of metaphors and meanings, linking us with numberless generations who have paused to wonder at the paradox of constancy and flow. Poetry has a special capacity to convey the elusive qualities of running water, its magical transformations, its correspondences with life's meanderings, and the particular qualities of actual streams and rivers. While in recent years some rivers have been cleansed and restored, so that they are healthier now than at any time since the industrial revolution, other rivers are under assault from the impacts of modern society--chemical pollution, the lowering of water tables, erosion of banks and stream beds, and flooding due to global climate change, as well as destruction of plant and animal habitat. In this book, more than 180 poems create a chorus of older voices (Shakespeare, Blake, Wordsworth, Dickinson) and new, from both sides of the Atlantic, including Margaret Atwood, Seamus Heaney, A. R. Ammons, Adrienne Rich, Randall Jarrell, William Carlos Williams, Gary Snyder, Wendell Berry, Andrew Motion and Elizabeth Bishop.

Book Description
This is the teaching guide that combines a parent/coach's native common sense with the God given talents their children already possess. It is far and away the nation's best seller in it's niche, and is endorsed by virtually everyone. (Except Little League Baseball Inc. who want to promote their own book). That hasn't deterred hundreds of local Little League organizations from choosing it for their managers' primary coaching and teaching guide.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome.......2002-02-11
I was at first reluctant to write a review about this book, it is wiser not to let your opposition know what you know, and easier to pretend that the performance of your team is the product of your own coaching greatness. However, to say nothing about this book does the author a great injustice, I have not read any other author who has dared to put so much information in a book about youth baseball as he has. After two seasons of implementing his techniques I can honestly say it works.
After a dismal first season as coach I was hell bent on improving my own performance as a coach. I read many books on coaching kids baseball before this book found me, it's funny how sometimes the cheapest and most unattractive book turns out to be the one you most cherish.
How many coaching books, for example, teach you great batting basics, and I am not talking about the old "see the ball hit the ball" coaching mantra. This book is full of proper baseball techniques, like how to grip the bat, how to swing the bat, where the hands should be at the start, where the hands should be at the end. This book covers all the basics of the game. It provides you with the tools to create a very solid base from which you can easily build a strong and effective team (or player). More than anything else this is where our team improved the most. From a team full of nothing, to kids who believed in their ability, simply because they knew how to do the little things correctly. The book has great chapters on fielding, base running, and throwing. It also covers the battery, a topic conveniently omitted by other books. The book is full of great verbal anchors and is written in an energetic style.
My advice, read the book, apply the proper techniques, then work on your teams own style and let the kids express their own individual talents. 'nough said.
Just what I needed.......2000-09-18
My wife bought this book several years ago at a homeschooling convention. My sons have not had an interest in baseball until recently. I blew the dust off the book, read it cover to cover, then "coached" two of my sons, ages 9 and 12. With just a few practices, they have gone from knowing zippo to looking like they have played for years. I refer to the book frequently for techniques and drills.
I am giving copies of it as a gift to the coaches of their baseball league.
A Must Read for New Coaches and Old.......2000-04-26
I bought "Bean's About Baseball" because I had heard it mentioned on an infosports.net discussion board.
I have coached highschool, Little League, and adult baseball so I beleive that I know something about the game but I also know there is always something to learn. I read the book hoping to learn something I did not know and with the thought that I would get another coach's perspective on the game.
If one reads this book, it must be done the first time from cover to cover. If you "skim" the book, you may very well come away thinking it is terse and sexist. However, early on the author explains why the book was written in this way and those aspects drft into the background.
The book is full of tips and drills while it helps identify and explain common mistakes made by young players. From my perspective in having some knowledge of the game, the book was a great review. I even took away some new thoughts and ideas for my practices and certain players. That is the wonderful thing about this game, like Earl Weaver used to say: "It's what you learn after you know it all that really counts".
Bean's About Baseball covers only the basics. Basics that managers and players have to go back and reveiw through their entire "careers". If you are expereinced, the book will be valuable as a review and you may learn a little something new. Another coach's perspective can often be valuable.
If you are a new coach, this book is an excellent starting point. Take an evening to read the book (about 120 pages) and go back to it as you need it. After you read it, you will know the basics of hitting, pitching, and fielding. When you know the "how to" basics, you have to convey that to your players and this book helps there also. Good coaches know the game and can teach it. This book will get you closer to being a good coach.
I have given my copy to one of the first year managers in my league that sought me out to ask about practices and drills for young players. I do not expect to see that copy again. Like many books on youth baseball, readers of this book will need to make value judgements on certain aspects as they relate to the local league rules and philosophies.
I will be recomending to our local board of directors that this book be given to each manager as part of their packet for next spring. I will further recommend that a companion sheet accompany the book to elimnate conflicts between it and our local rules and philosophies.
Like many lagues, ours has many well meaning coaching volunteers that do not really know youth baseball and how to teach it to kids. If my proposal is adopted, "Bean's About Baseball" will be a primer to next year's coaching clinic.
I would strongly recommend it for new coaches and old.
Just my thoughts, Splitter

Dynamic analysis of consumer motivations.......2007-08-31
The hidden persuaders of marketing have come out of their mazes to explain willingly how they probe people to find out what makes them tick and why they buy one product instead of another. Everybody knows about surveys and nose counting from political polls and other quantitative research. Now Judith Langer covers qualitative research (QR), the established, but often less explained, way to find out what consumers like and dislike on a deeper level. She notes the advantages and disadvantages of focus group set-ups that allow marketers' clients to hide behind big one-way mirrors, and watch and hear representative customers responding to their product. QR's chief drawback and the reason some companies prohibit it, Langer notes, is that some clients find it "vague," and are uncomfortable with its surveillance tactics. We recommend this authoritative look behind the one-way mirror to those who deal with focus group results.
Looking through the one way mirror.......2007-05-13
This text was excellent for those intending to create and facilitate focus groups for the first time. The book adopts practical tips to create the topic guide for the session, along with identifing various techniques to conduct the research and achieve the desired outcomes. Not sure how valuable it would be for an intermediate or advanced market researcher, but for the novice it is definately worth the read.
For all aspiring marketing professionals.......2001-09-12
In The Mirrored Window: Focus Groups From A Moderator's Point Of View, Judith Langer (senior vice president of Langer/Roper Qualitative Research Division) draws upon her more that twenty years of experience and expertise to cogently clearly explain the role and performance of the focus group as an important aspect of the marketing process. With the use of examples drawn from a variety of different industries (including parts of an actual transcript from focus groups for Playboy Enterprises), Langer illustrated the client's role, offers tips for controlling rambunctious groups, and how to energize groups that lag or get distracted from the targeted issue or presentation. The Mirrored Window is essential reading for all aspiring marketing professionals and is a core addition to any Marketing or Business School reference library.
Refreshing Resource.......2001-04-13
This outstanding book has become my preferred resource as I develop in the practice of qualitative research consulting on Judith Langer's side of the mirror after years in the back room. It provides a comprehensive, intelligent and thoughtful approach to qualitative research that I highly recommend for anyone involved in learning more about consumers. I especially enjoyed discovering her process for writing actionable, meaningful moderator reports. The challenge of conducting analysis and developing implications is demystified, thanks to Ms. Langer.

Book Description
From the First Edition:
"Continues the high quality of previously published volumes in the Sage series on qualitative research methods. . . . Useful and instructive. . . . David L. Morgan deals with a number of practical issues concerning the conduct of focus groups, such as the degree of moderator involvement and group size. . . . Provides ample illustrations . . . and thought-provoking advice for researchers and students."
--Contemporary Sociology
"David L. Morganâs book is unique among current offerings on focus groups because it is directed at academic users of focus groups rather than practitioners. His account is also unique in its critical attitude toward contemporary market research applications of focus groups. . . . The book succeeds best at providing fuel for scholarly debates about what group interviews can and cannot contribute to research."
--Journal of Marketing Research
"Provides the reader with a very clear and practical overview of the focus group as a method for field research. . . . Well-written and informative. . . . Providing the history and methodological rationale for the method. . . . Attests to the benefits or strengths of focus group research on the basis of personal opinion and testimonial evidence."
--Personnel Psychology
Only a decade ago, focus groups were virtually unknown to social scientists. Now their use in academic as well as outside settings is vast and ever growing. David L. Morgan has extensively revised and updated his best-selling
Focus Groups as Qualitative Research, providing an excellent guide for researchers in every discipline. He begins his comprehensive revision with an updated introduction that offers a discussion of current social science approaches to focus groups. Expanded coverage on the comparison of focus groups to individual interviews follows, as well as more on the strengths and weaknesses of focus groups (Chapter 2). Chapter 3âs section on self-contained focus groups has also been expanded to reflect the increased range of research being done in this area. The next chapter has been thoroughly reorganized both to provide an overview of what a typical set of groups looks like as well as new insights on research design. Similarly, Chapters 5 and 6 have been reorganized and broadened to include examples from social scientists who have established their own practices and methodological research on focus groups. This best-selling research guide concludes with future directions and references that take into account the explosive growth in focus groups as a research tool for all social scientists.
Reflecting the many changes that have occurred in the study of focus groups over the years,
Focus Groups as Qualitative Research, Second Edition is for qualitative researchers in every academic discipline as well as those in nonacademic settings.
Customer Reviews:
Focus Groups as Qualitative Research (Qualitative Research Methods).......2007-02-07
Succint, accurate and practical. Great help for those entering the world of group interviews.
I bought this book for school........2007-01-04
A good book and very helpful but arrived late from amazon.
Instructive and Helpful.......2003-10-03
Data collected from focus groups provide information that would otherwise be unknown. The author defines focus group sessions as "basically group interviews" (p. 9). He adds "The fundamental data that focus groups produce are transcripts of the group discussion" (p. 10). What a researcher finds in focus groups is interaction among the members that is not found in other forms of research. The first chapter covers the history of its use.
Four aspects of group discussion are discussed:
1. The observer is advised to pay close attention to the difference between what participants find interesting and what they find important.
2. Note differences in perspectives as revealed through how questions are asked and answered.
3. Observe areas of agreement and disagreement.
4. Be aware that attempts to build consensus are found in group dynamics within focus groups.
In general this book provides the basics of introducing researchers to the expectations of using focus group for data collection and interpretation.
Great.......2003-02-27
This is in reference to the Second Edition because I had read some bad reviews about the Third Edition. It's clear and to the point. Information in other Focus Group books are covered, but without all the fluff.
Solid Start in Understanding the Use of Focus Groups.......2003-02-20
Essential to the study of marketing research, "Focus Groups As Qualitative Research" by David Morgan succinctly presents a classroom quality look at a much misunderstood aspect of needs and wants analyses.
Each chapter is segmented topically, making this academic essay organized in such a way to be appreciated by the marketing or communications student.
Intended for the collegiate level and above, Morgan presumes a basic knowledge of market research principles and goals. Here, he justifies the credibility of focus groups, and steers the reader away from seeing them as superficial, unscientific examinations and guesswork.
While it has an academic journal tone to it, it is readable. It has a hefty bibliography at the end, with 50-60 works cited.
I fully recommend "Focus Groups As Qualitative Research " by David L. Morgan.

Book Description
There is an increasing divergence of focus group practice between social researchers and commercial market researchers. This book addresses the key issues and practical requirements of the social researcher, namely: the kinds of social research issues for which focus groups are most and least suitable; optimum group size and composition; and the designing of focusing exercises, facilitation and appropriate analysis.
The authors use examples, drawn from their own focus groups research experience, and provide exercises for further study. They address the three main components of composition, conduct and analysis in focus group research and also acknowledge the increasing impact the Internet has had on social research by covering the role and conduct of `virtual focus groups'.
Customer Reviews:
Academic, Not Practical.......2003-12-19
This book is good for academics that need a history of focus groups and a summary of research studies that investigate the technique itself. This is an interesting history, with many studies weighing in on what makes focus groups better or worse. But, as a practitioner, there is little that I found particularly new or insightful in the book. I think that Stewart's work is a better guide for someone that needs details on how to conduct a focus group. So, while good for PhD students, this book I found less good for managers.

Description:
This paper explores focus groups supported by group support systems (GSS) with anonymous interaction capability in two configurations: same time/same place and same time/different place. After reviewing the literature, we compare and contrast these anonymity-featured GSS-supported focus groups with traditional focus groups and discuss their benefits and limitations. We suggest directions for future research concerning GSS-supported focus groups with respect to technological implications (typing skills and connection speeds), national culture (high and low context; power distance), and lying behavior (adaptation of model of Hancock, J. T., Thom-Santelli, J., & Ritchie, T. (2004). Deception and design: The impact of communication technology on lying behavior. Proceedings of the 2004 conference on human factors in computing systems (pp. 129-134), whereby lying is a function of three design factors: synchronicity, recordability, and distributedness).

grappling glory is a fun, nostalgia romp through the awa and amateur wrestling. it brings back fond memories watching the wrestlers on tv, then running to the auditoriums and see them live. although very informative, i think it could of been more objective. it does mention the shaddier side of the sport here and there, but should of talked more about it. the book discusses the fall of the awa, mainly focusing on the wwf and how it took wrestlers away. ross does causally mention weak story lines, but should of make more of it. there were times on tv, where the audience was booing, and yelling "boring" (along with other words)throughout the matches. when they started taping shows without audience, it was miserable. ross spends a lot of time being very, very kind to the gagnes. although he mentions greg as being undersized compared to most wrestlers and their steroid use, he really misses the point that greg was a stiff. greg was the reason i turned off watching awa wrestling and in my opinion, was the final nail in awa's coffin. he had no personality, and was dull to watch. he had no business to step into the ring. watching him do car commercials was bad enough. with regards to wrestlers, i believe verne introduced new headliners about once a year. this made for many, many "rematches". sometimes you'd see the same main events 3 times in a row. i believe they were losing audience with that redundancy. ross only mentions the jobber/heel george "scrap iron" gadaski once, (yet he was a regular on tv and the cards) along with kenny yates, who is not mentioned at all. ross does not discuss verne gagnes "gera-speed and gera-lac" products he pushed on tv. both were taken off the market by the fda. the book is roughly divided in half, the first being spent on amateur wrestling. i would have like less of that and more on the professional end. overall the book is a fun, recommended read.

BOOK COVER JACKET INFO FROM THE AUTHOR, ROSS BERNSTEIN.......2004-11-20
Forewords by Jesse Ventura, Verne Gagne & J Robinson
Minnesota's amazing amateur and professional wrestling histories come to life like never before in best-selling sports author Ross Bernstein's newest coffee-table book, "Grappling Glory." Featuring interviews and biographies from hundreds of our state's greatest wrestlers, coaches, media personalities, supporters and fans, the book is both intriguing as well as insightful. In it are stories ranging from inspirational to heartwarming to downright hilarious. While these two completely different animals, wrestling and rassling, surely make for some odd bedfellows, Bernstein went to great lengths to make sure that each entity had its own place in the book: amateur in the first half and professional in at the latter. He also made sure to acknowledge that amateur wrestling is a sport, while professional wrestling is a form of sports-entertainment. There are many common denominators between the two, however, in that they both require incredible athleticism, extremely hard work and a boat-load of self-confidence to succeed. Both have also produced a whole bunch of extraordinary people over the years, and that is what this book is all about - celebrating the achievements of those who have made Minnesota proud both on the mat and in the ring. With some 350 photos, the book highlights a tremendous sampling of local heroes - both native Minnesotans as well as transplants. Some were obvious choices, while others came from way outside the box. All of them, however, had a very unique and interesting story to tell, and all of them have touched the lives of countless people along the way. Bernstein spent nearly a year doing research and interviewing wrestling aficionados from all spectrums of the world of sports and entertainment to get the inside scoop. On the amateur side, the book dives into the state-of-the-state of youth, high school, collegiate and Olympic freestyle & Greco-Roman wrestling. Take a trip back in time as you read about and look at pictures of every high school state champ from the very first tourney in 1937, all the way through 2004. From in-depth interviews with dozens of local high school coaches, to feature chapters on every college and university program statewide - it's all here. Highlighting this section are the two-time National Champion Golden Gophers, as well as Division III powerhouse, Augsburg, which has very quietly turned its program into a dynasty over the past two decades. In addition, there are even sections devoted to junior college wrestling as well as the advent of women's wrestling too. Now, on the professional side of the fence, the book chronicles the glorious history of grappling in the Gopher State, going all the way back to the turn of the century - when the "f" word (fake) dared not be mentioned out loud... or else! It also features a huge chapter on the history and evolution of the old American Wrestling Association (AWA), and its legendary founder/promoter/world champion - Verne Gagne. There are also more than 100 feature biographies on nearly every home-town or home-grown pro wrestler with ties to Minnesota as well. From "Jumping" Jim Brunzell to "Mean Gene" Okerlund, and from Stan "Big K" Kowalski to Larry "The Axe" Hennig - the AWA's entire cast of colorful characters is all on board. Learn about life on the road from Joe Laurinaitis (aka "Animal") of Road Warriors fame; find out what Baron Von Raschke is up to these days; and laugh yourself silly reading about the antics of legendary wrestler-turned-trainer Eddie Sharkey. Relive the glory days of watching the action up close and personal out at the old Minneapolis Auditorium, it will be a trip down memory lane that will surely bring a smile to your face. It was all about the journey and about making a difference... and the difference these legends have made has left a truly lasting legacy - for all of us all here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. From high school state champs to world heavyweight champs, their personal memories dot the canvas of this century-long saga, in what is sure to be a wonderful trip through time.
