Less than impressive small, thin paperback. Profiles only a small amount of species. There are at least a few errors: mislabeled photos and incorrectly identified species of plants and fish.
Good Manual to have........2005-07-07
This manual is worht the money and is very helpful in the types of Aquarium plants that work best with different species of fish and water conditions. I found this maunual to be well worth the money and very helpful and it does have diagrams to show you exactly what you're being instructed on.

This little book is a very good value. It covers more than 40 different plants in its encylopedia section in addition to its glossary and several different info sections, including info on lighting, nutrients, selection and care. It gives more info about plants than can be obtained in the more general information books and is very inexpensive. It could be organized a little better but it is still very useful and very much worth the price.
Where Are The Fish Supposed To Go?.......2003-12-06
There are books out there that are sensitive to the interaction of fish and plants. This is not one of them. Please invest a little more money and purchase one of those other books. The sample layouts are incredibly overcrowded. Even some of the photographs reflect the overcrowding!
Best planted aquarium book [for this amount].......2003-02-14
Please excuse me, I'm about to gush. If you are just going to buy one book, and you have [little] to spend, buy this one. (If you have unlimited funds, buy this one plus Aquarium Plants by Christel Kasselmann).
As the planted aquarium chairman at our aquarium club, I get a lot of questions. The answers to most of them are in this book. It is a great beginner reference, but be sure to go back and reread it after you've been in the hobby for six months, because you'll learn a lot more about pruning, aquascaping, trimming, etc.

If this were an expensive book, I wouldn't rate it so highly, but it has more information than you'd think for a cheap little paperback. The koi varieties section is mediocre, but you want a big glossy hardcover for that anyway, right? The advice on koi handling and transport is outstanding, with great emphasis on minimizing stress to your fish. There is also information on plants, something most koi keepers disdain to mention. Another reviewer thought the author was against wheat germ sticks for koi--he's not condemning them, just saying there's no proof they make a difference in over-wintering. So much of koi advice is unsupported, it doesn't hurt to mention the fact.

Where's the part about behavior, the part about training your fish to come on over (admittedly this is easy) and how about a more comprehensive types and markings - it was also sad they really skipped over butterfly koi. Otherwise nice pictures and a good disease section.
Oh well. Nice book to have, but it is not by any means complete.

This book includes everything you need to take care of koi, but sometimes in too much detail. Many of the items in this book are exactly the opposite of what I have read elsewhere (e.g wheatgerm sticks are bad for koi??)
While too much detail is usually the problem, there are also many parts when there are not enough facts to actually understand what thi book is trying to say.
It's an OK beginners guide, but some parts can be tedious and confusiong.
One of the two books you need........2002-02-07
This book has all the information you need on keeping Koi. Don't let its small size fool you. I have browse through all available Koi books, this book is the only one you need. You will not get more information from other books, except for more pictures. Buy this book and another book titled "The ponder's Bible" for excellent information on pond building and maintenance. These two books will be more than enough for keeping Koi sucessfully.

If you're a beginner at having a pond and keeping koi, this is a great book. It has everything from digging the pond, filters and pumps...to everything you need to know to keep the pond clean for your fish. The book identifys the various breeds of koi, with a complete section on diseases.

Good information to start.......2004-01-09
My daughter (7) and I setup our first tropical tank and used this book, along with resources on the internet and from our local fish store. I thought this provided a good overview that isn't too technical or long. I read it in an afternoon. Some things I thought were interesting;
-A history of fish-keeping as a hobby.
-Good photos and descriptions of the fish
-Several different tank setups with photos and fish selection.
-Keeping the fish healthy with photos of what common problems look like. I've heard of ich, but now I know what it looks like.
Plus, it also covers marine (saltwater) tanks which we may want to do if we stay with the hobby.
Overall an excellent book to start with.

I good book to add to your fish library........2000-12-14
This is book three of a three volume set. It covers the more "exotic" fish available in the pet stores. Vol 1 is the more common aquarium fish, Vol 2 is rarer fish (cichlids and brackish). Each book is well written and concise. This book covers tank setup, fish, plants, and more.
Unlike other photo guides, this one includes a more complete info section for each fish. Not just the pictoral symbols that some other books have.
Each fish has a large and colorful picture, although the quality is some times lacking. The layout is easy to follow and the information is generally excellent.
I wouldn't make this your first book to purchase but it is definetely one to add to your library.

Very interesting.......2007-07-29
This book has a lot of scientific data and an analytical feel to it. The writter put a lot of thought into this book and provided a lot of information not found in most aquarium books. She focuses on low tech tanks which is nice for those of us that don't have a lot of money to invest in equipment but want the look of a planted tank. I recommend this book to anyone that has a low tech tank or is interested in a different perspective on planted tanks.
Practical, yet scientific........2007-03-13
This book can be useful to the layman and has the depth for the pro.
The author clearly knows her subject and has the technical expertise. The biology and chemistry is over my head (it has been a loooong time since taking those classes), but it is actually readable. Some items simply have to be taken on faith if you haven't got the background to fully comprehend everything. In other words, one does not have to understand 'redox equations' to get the content.
I haven't tried her methods yet, but I am intrigued. It goes against most of my library, but she makes a lot of sense.
Other options.......2007-02-21
First of all, I gave "Ecology ..." 4 stars rather 5 as my feeling is that a "Practical Manual" might offer some options in terms of an author's preference. And, being a "Manual," it may also present "Trouble shooting" type of pointers, or "How to find your way back if a different path was selected." I believe the above are areas that could have been addressed in better fashion. However, that said, "Ecology..." is really an excellent source. D. Walstad tackles subjects with both the scientific base as well as personal experience. At times, the scientific base is (for may tastes and background) a little too involved. But, sprinkled throughout, we have questions with answers. I really liked that. I also liked her chapter that basically dealt with "This has worked for me...." The author dispels some myths in terms of natural sunlight and carbon supplementation that generally runs against current trends. What I thought might be improved:
1) A chapter devoted to, "How to rectify a situation without a total breakdown of the aquarium."
2) Options to "Plotting soil"(gardening soil)in the substrate. For those of us who don't feel confident in running off to Wal-Mart for our substrate.
3. More information on filtration; I'm a little skeptical in terms of the plants "Can do it all."
But, compared to the other book also purchased, "Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants," I very much like the author stating in clear terms "This has worked for me." With "Encyclopedia," you need dig to find this information.

A GOOD BOOK IF YOU UNDERSTAND THE LINGO - I DID NOT. THE BOOK WAS WAY TO TECHNICAL FOR MY POOR BRAIN. I TRIED TO READ IT BUT JUST COULD NOT. I ORDERED THE BOOK BY MISTAKE (AGAIN MY POOR BRAIN). SENT IT BACK AND WAS GIVEN A RAPID REFUND IN ACCORDANCE WITH AMAZON POLICY. I highly recommend this book because it says it how it is!
Read this book and suddenly nearly all of your queries about freshwater aquarium ecology will be answered! From how aquatic plants purify water to caring for aquatic plants without using elaborate expensive equipment. Although, I am one to think that if people want their plants to flourish and have stable pH and alkalinity levels in their aquarium, they will need to invest in carbon dioxide fertilising with a solenoid valve to allow CO2 to flow when only the lights are on, providing all other growth factors are adequate (like lighting and nutrients).

If you liked the first book you need to have this one too. Very good continuation to first one. Lots of new fish and plant species and some mistakes done in the first book are corrected in this one.
A 2nd volume to, IMHO, the best all-round aquaria reference.......1998-10-10
A large and recommendable guide to fresh and brackish water fishes and plants, in the style and format of volume 1 (to which it often refers for further information on related species).
Contents:
- A section on aquatic plants both sub-aquatic and emersed, including 22 pages dedicated to the flowers of the plants featured (mostly pictures - from the small and humble to the impressively coloured and shaped). 150 plants are described (according to their count).
- A section on iron and other nutrients: symptoms of deficiencies, fertilisation, CO2 addition and general plant care and choice guidelines (about 10 pages total, includes some pictures of symptoms of common plant problems)
- A section on algae, including description, pictures and control for: blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), diatoms (a.k.a. brown algae), and cluster, beard, green bunch, green spot, black spot, pelt, black brush, filamentous and suspended algae (9 pages, with pictures).
- Some 22 pages on anatomy and physiology of fishes.
- The largest section (almost 2000 pages) describes and contains pictures of some 850 species (again, on editor's count). From time to time a picture of a biotope is included - sometimes with specifications as to the fishy inhabitants, sometimes with miscellaneous comments. The origin of these is quite unbalanced: while South America scores some 17 photos, lake Malawi makes do with 4 (though 2 are underwater ones - the only ones to be so!), lake Tanganyka with just one, Australia with 3 and Asia with 1. The rest go completely unrecorded. To make matters worse most of these are landscape pictures giving little information about the actual habitat of the fish or plants. Only in one picture can aquatic plants clearly be seen (apart from water lilies, that is) - no specific biotope information is given for plants at all.
All in all this is, I believe, a great reference book on plants and fish. It shows many remarkable plants and fish, many of which are not even normally commercialised. Great for the terminally curious and those whose imagination runs ahead of their tanks' possibilities. But not a good source of biotope information (other than short descriptions and hints contained in the individual species descriptions).

Anyone looking for a handy reference for freshwater aquarium fish would do well to buy this book. Its small size aids in its active usage, and its index of common and scientific names helps in locating the species you are curious about. It has good pictures and descriptions for all the fish contained within, and you would do well to follow the indications given, as in many cases one is hard-pressed to find any alternate sources of information on rare fish.
For the most part, the translation from German is without error. It is understandable in all cases, slightly awkward in a few. However, there are certain instances where data is incorrect, or pictures switched or missing. These are few, but notably occur with the Siamese Algae Eater and Corydoras julii entries, where there is an incorrect and missing picture, respectively.
Overall, a great fishkeeping resource.
An Excellent Book for Any Aquarist.......2002-09-30
This is a wonderful and consise guide to the amazing variety of tropical fresh water fish. The photographs are clear and descriptions of the various species are informative and helpful. This is the only book I've found helped me identify a previously purchased fish that had been wrongly identified. Information on various plants and diseases are very helpful as well. Everyone with a freshwater aquarium needs this book!
This one toasts the old Axelrod standard.......2002-07-17
The Axelrod atlas was the standard for years, but this one makes that book look bad. The reason: Every fish has a detailed description including origin location, maintenance, food, and breeding. Plus, it lists synonyms and erroneous names the species is sold under.
This is probably the most in-depth, relevant, high-quality single-volume reference book I have found in any field that I have personally researched. Just buy it.
