Monologues from
Stuyvesant High School
Tuesday, September 11, seemed like any other day at Stuyvesant High School, only a few blocks away from the World Trade Center. The semester was just beginning, and the students, faculty, and staff were ready to start a new year.
Within a few hours that Tuesday morning, they would experience an event that transformed all their lives completely.
Here, in their own words, are the firsthand stories of a day none of us will ever forget.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Patricia A.......2007-03-13
I thought this was a spectacular book. I loved how each person a different view of what happened. Each person had different feelings and i like how they portrayed it in the book. Stuyvesant High School had to face tough times after the September 11th tragedy. I am amazed how they can write a book 2 years after the catastrophe. I applaud them for a job well done!
The Greatest Book in the World!!.......2007-01-14
This book was a amazing. It made you feel like you were right there asking them the questions. Also it made you think about what happened that day. So I think you should read this for school or just free time because you will never put it down, and other people might want to read it after you do.
moving.......2004-04-14
(...)I read the whole thing in under an hour. I realize I'm a little biased, but this book is absolutely amazing. A lot of the 9/11 accounts you hear are sappy and formulaic, people talking about how their lives will never be the same, blah blah blah. But these accounts are real and candid. The monologues cover the entire spectrum of Stuy students, faculty and staff. You experience the day and its effects from many perspectives. Though sometimes it reads a little slowly - there's a lot of "like" and "ummm" - you can almost forgive it because you realize that these are real people expressing their thoughts on a very intense day...and sometimes the words don't come so easily. I recommend it to everyone, in particular, adolescents, because they will have the easiest time relating to the stories of the students.
With Their Eyes-9-11.......2003-12-09
WITH THEIR EYES edited by ANNIE THOMAS was a good book about September 11th. Some of the author were students, teachers, and people who work at Stuyvesant High School, two blocks away from the Twin Towers. Some of the reaction were sadness, crazy with fear, and some student were not beleiveing it was happening to the TWIN TOWERS. If you want to know the rest of the book, you have to read the book.
I Thought Today Would be LIke all The Others.......2003-10-21
This is an amazing book it is made up of poems by children who were in a school at ground zero, on September 11, 2001. The day that all Americans will never forget, stuck with so much emotion and heart break. This is how they are dealing with the loss of family, friends, and people they never thought would die this way. Together this put brilliance, tears, heart break, smiles that it's over for now, and poems that act as therapy.

Book Description
The battle of Gettysburg included many dramatic and controversial moments, several of which involved Cemetery Hill. This book covers in detail the three-day struggle for that crucial high ground from the soldiers' point of view. Using official reports, letters, diaries, and memoirs, it tells how and why the generals made crucial decisions and what it was like to be a soldier involved in the bloody hand-to-hand fighting.

Ewell's chance at Gettysburg........2007-02-26
This short read covers the first two days of the greatest battle on the American continent. Confederate Major General Ewell had a chance to defeat the North on the second day. He hesitated and the next day Lee ordered Pickett to go up the center. On the second day, Ewell and his North Carolina and Lousiana brigades could have thrown the Yanks off Cemetery Hill and won the battle if not the war.
This is a short read on the first two days of the battle. I guess I don't cotton much to what could have been. Lee's Army attacked strong defensive positions and lost close to 28,000 men. True if Ewell had shown more initiative, there might never have been a third day. However, Cemetery Hill was not taken by the LA Tigers, and the Army of Northern Virginia lost. I commend the author on summarizing the first two days in a highly readable account.
Cemetery Hill and Gettysburg.......2004-04-22
Cemetery Hill was critical to the Battle of Gettysburg. Controversy has ensued to the present day about the Confederacy's failure to attempt to capture this high ground on July 1, 1863, following its victory over two Corps of the Union Army to the North and West of town. Subsequent events during the Battle, such as Pickett's charge, the fighting on Little Round Top, and the fight for the Wheatfield, have received more attention than General Early's attack on Cemetery Hill during the evening of July 2. Yet, the fighting for Cemetery Hill was critical and may have constituted the South's best possiblity of winning the Battle of Gettysburg.
Terry Jones's "Cemetery Hill: The Struggle for the High Ground, July 1 -- 3, 1863" (2003) is part of a series called "Battleground America Guides" published by Da Capo Press. Each volume in the series attempts to highlight a small American battlefield or portion of a large battlefield and to explain its significance in a clear and brief narrative. Jones's study admirably meets the stated goals of the series.
The book opens with a brief setting of the stage for the Battle of Gettysburg. This is followed by chapters describing the Union and Confederate armies and the leaders who would play crucial roles in the fight for Cemetery Hill. There is a short discussion of the fighting on the opening day of the battle, July 1, 1863, which focuses on the failure of the South to attempt to take Cemetery Hill and the adjacent Culp's Hill following its victory of that day.
The chief subject of the book, however, is the fighting for Cemetery Hill late on July 2. Jones explains Cemetery Hill's role in Robert E. Lee's overall battle plan. He discusses the opening artillery duel on the Union right followed by the fierce attack by the Louisiana Tigers and North Carolina troops under the leadership of Hays and Avery on East Cemetery Hill. This attack reached the Union batteries defending Cemetery Hill and may have come within an ace of success given the depletion of the Union defense on the Hill to meet threats on the Union left. Elements of the Union 11th Corps and 2nd Corps reinforced the position and drove back the attack. Southern general Robert Rodes was to have supported this attack on the west but failed to reach his position in time to do so. General John Gordon's position was in reserve behind the troops of Hays and Avery but these troops were not ordered forward.
The book deals briefly with the third day of the Battle -- the day of Pickett's charge -- in which the Southern troops did not renew their efforts against Cemetery Hill -- such an attempt would have had scant chance of success in daylight. The final chapter of the book consists of Jones's views on the events of the battle, particularly the failure of the Lieuenant General Richard Ewell of the Second Corps of Lee's Army to attack Cemetery Hill on July 1, a decision Jones finds was correct, and the causes of the failure of the July 2 attack (poor coordination among Ewell, Rodes, Gordon, and A.P Hill of the Southern Third Corps.) There is a brief but highly useful discussion to the prospective visitor to Gettysburg of touring the Cemetery Hill portion of the Battlefield.
The book is clearly, crisply and succinctly written. It includes good maps and many interesting photographs and paintings. The reader with some overall knowledge of Gettysburg will find this book more accessible that the two volumes of Harry Pfanz's outstandingly detailed trilogy that deal with the first day of the battle and with the fighting for Culp's Hill and Cemetery Hill. Serious students of the Battle of Gettysburg can get a good, clear overview of the fighting for Cemetery Hill from this slim volume.
I had a few caveats. I found some small errors in portions of the Battlefield that Jones was not treating extensively. I found one derogatory racial reference. I think this was due to the editorial failure to put quotation marks around a term that was used in a document contemporaneous to the Battle. Finally, although the book gives an excellent and clear discussion of Cemetery Hill, I found it overpriced. Readers on a budget will need to think about purchasing this volume or companion volumes in this substantively excellent series.

Book Description
This book of spectacular full-color photographs of common eastern aquatic insects is a fly tyer's dream.
For centuries anglers have struggled with their peculiar dependency on the aquatic insects that put the word "fly" in fly fishing, discoursing obsessively on how to replicate them with fur and feathers, and even about what to call them. Volumes have been written on the subject, but until now there has never been a book like Fishbugs.
Following the success of his first book, hailed as "the most useful book for eastern fly fishers since Art Flick's Streamside Guide," author Thomas Ames Jr. lets his photographic skills take center stage. His bigger-than-life studies of mayflies, caddisflies, and other waterborne insects, captured in extraordinary detail, allow you see them as never before. Fly tyers will appreciate them as models for their imitations, while naturalists and other lovers of nature photography admire them for their intrinsic beauty. His thoughtful prose examines the special characteristics that keep these fascinating insects at the heart of the angler's gentle art and underscores their value as indicators of the health of our inland waters. Full-color throughout.

Fly Fishing.......2007-08-10
I bought my husband this book for his birthday and he loves it. He loves fishing the streams of Pa. and this book has been a great wealth of knowledge.
Very Nice Photos.......2005-10-13
This is a book that belongs in every advanced fly fishing/tying library. the photos of common mayflies, caddis and stoneflies are outstanding. The text is anecdotal and interesting, but could have been expanded to include hatch dates, fly sizes, more on variations (like the many body colors of psuedocloeon on teh Housatonic R.). A very nice companion to Mayflies by Fauceglia, also a recent excellent pictorial book.

Customer Reviews:
Very Good Read.......2007-03-08
I really like the way the author ties Freemasonry to the psychology of the 17th and 18th centuries and how the symbolism of the craft relates to different psychological states in a person's development. The book is a bit short, with the majority of the pages dedicated to pictures. But I'm happy to have a book with such detailed pictures. I highly recommend this book.
Not All-Encompassing, but Illuminating to a Degree.......2006-09-28
First of all, the 133 illustrations in this thin little volume are excellent, resplendent with Masonic symbolism and indicative of Freemasonry's multifaceted history. True, a few of the pictures are just a bit tangential to the subject at hand, though these do serve the function of showing the larger context of Freemasonry, that which has influenced it and that which has been influenced by it. But by far the majority give the reader a very well-rounded and fascinating visual crash-course in Freemasonry itself. Still, it is a crash-course, a starting point for the uninitiated but interested outsider like me and perhaps a lavish but cursory review for those who have gone deeper into the subject.
The text of the book comes in two parts, an extended introductory essay and brief captions accompanying the many illustrations. The former is a bit eccentric, interpreting the three degrees of Freemasonry in the light of Jungian psychology and briefly explaining the diagrams depicting each along those lines. In general this seemed persuasive for the most part and worked well in making the rituals and images intelligible, but as the author makes clear at the beginning this is by no mean the official interpretation or even necessarily a common one. I can't help but feel that addressing the standard Masonic understanding and then adding the Jungian spin might have made this book a little more helpful. As for the latter, the captions do a pretty good job in placing the illustrations, but very little of the rich symbolism is explained in any depth, and much flies by with no comment. I tended to find this just a bit frustrating, though perhaps the short format of the book makes it inevitable. That being so, it might have made sense to enlarge the spotty bibliography at the end into a "suggested reading" page for those whose curiosity was thus aroused. And with such a wealth of intriguing images, this fine little book can scarcely fail to have that effect.
A Worthy Addition to the Library of Any Freemason or Masonic Scholar. .......2006-02-14
Though not a book of great length, it's only 96 pages, "Freemasonry: A Journey through Ritual and Symbol" offers the reader a glimpse into the Craft of Freemasonry through its 133 illustrations and the secrets hidden in its text.
Freemasonry has been defined in many ways, but herein W. Kirk MacNulty gives us a workable definition in a single sentence when he writes `Freemasonry is a very old, secular, fraternal society which requires the belief in a Supreme Being as its principle qualification for membership and which is dedicated to the practice of tolerance, respect and understanding of others; the encouragement of high standards of morality among its members; and the performance of charitable works.
We see the history of Freemasonry from its ancient past, to the formation of the Grand Lodge in London, England in 1717, followed quickly by Grand Lodges being established in Ireland in 1725, in Scotland in 1736, in Germany in 1737, in Denmark in 1745 and in the Netherlands in 1756. We also see Lodges established under the Grand Lodge of England being formed in America, in Boston in 1733, and in Charleston in 1735.
We are then introduced to the three degrees of Freemasonry: The First Degree Entered Apprentice, The Second Degree Fellowcraft, and The Third Degree Master Mason. While W. Kirk MacNulty tries to explain the significance of each of these degrees, he does not seek to reveal the arts, parts and points of the hidden mysteries of Ancient Freemasonry. We are offered insight into the psychology of each Degree without, as is too often the case, simply reprinting the candidate's manual for these Degrees.
"Freemasonry A Journey Through Ritual and Symbol" has numerous illustrations showing the beauty of the operative Mason's Craft. We are shown the 16th Century stone-carvings from the flying buttresses at the Cathedral of St. John at S'Hertogenbosch, Holland; we see illustrations of the Masonic Tracing Boards, and we see illustrations which conceal or reveal many of the secrets of Freemasonry. Each of these many illustrations is interesting in its own right as examples of the artist's skill, but more so when one studies each illustration seeking the hidden mysteries it may contain.
I enjoyed "Freemasonry A Journey Through Ritual and Symbol" and consider it a worthy addition to the library of any Freemason or Masonic Scholar.
Kirk's Writings.......2005-10-07
Knowing Kirk Personally, and a brother and studying under him, I can say I have not met a freemason who lives by the craft such as him. I do recomend finding the rarer book which goes into further depth, The way of the craftsman.
Beautiful but lacking.......2005-09-16
This is a beautiful book! The illustrations are worth the price of the book. However, its text is quite lacking in many areas.

Book Description
A Gentleman at the Table will give any man the knowledge he needs to maneuver any dining situation - from a casual meal of fried chicken at his mom's house to a seven-course dinner at the finest restaurant in the world. It includes. . .
- How to set a table
- How to pronounce more than 100 unusual food names
- How to use obscure eating utensils
- How to perform the Heimlich maneuver
- How to eat more than 25 foods that are challenging to eat gracefully such as lobster, snails, fried chicken, and pasta.
In a society where more and more people eat with plastic forks and spoons at fast food restaurants, it is still important that a man know proper dining etiquette. There are still situations where not knowing what a finger bowl is or not knowing how to pronounce an item on a menu can have an effect on what others think of you. Showing he has little working knowledge of table manners at a lunch meeting or on a job interview over dinner may have an important impact on a man's life.
Like all the books in the GentleManners series,
A Gentleman at the Table is easy to use, non-threatening, and an entertaining read.

Good Info; Covers Many Topics.......2007-05-20
This book covers a number of topics helpful to men and young boys who are learning good manners. Very informative for young men learning the appropriate way to behave and do things in many settings, and not just at the dinner table. The language sounds a bit "fluffy," but the information is concise and detailed.
another essential tome.......2004-12-04
Once again John Bridges and Bryan Curtis present essential information in both a very useful and charming manner.
Very thorough.
A must have addition to every gentlemen's collection.
