Book Description
Every notable aspect of Toxic Contamination in Large Lakes is examined by known experts from every continent. Authors represent the U.S. and Canada, Argentina, Sweden, USSR, Israel, Great Britain, Japan, China, The Netherlands, Germany, Kenya, Austria. Authors represent the entire spectrum-academia, government, and industry. The first published work offer such a diverse and complete examination of this subject, it provides valuable information and data for today and tomorrow-and the basis for stimulating new research. Chapters in this work were reviewed and carefully edited, after initial presentation at the World Conference on Large Lakes held May 18-21, 1986 at Mackinac Island, Michigan. It presents a wealth of information...a resource for continued use over the years...and should do much to stimulate further study. This vital work is especially of interest to environmental scientists and toxicologists, fisheries professionals, researchers, aquatic resource managers, ecologists, biologists, chemists, and engineers. Every science or engineering library with a water interest should have this notable reference.

Book Description
Expanded to include sections on seamanship, navigation, and health issues, the completely updated and redesigned new edition of David Seidman’s bestselling guide reaffirms its reputation as the best sea kayaking guide available. A top-to-bottom introduction for novice and mid-level kayakers, this highly visual handbook provides kayakers with the whole scoop on everything from gear, transportation, and paddling technique to the finer points of Eskimo rolling, rescue protocol, group and solo paddling.
Customer Reviews:
The Best on the Market.......2001-06-09
This is the best general kayaking book on the market today (2001). Covers the range of the activity. Enjoy.
Essential, though perhaps not complete.......2000-08-24
I don't know if I'd agree with the subtitle; Seidman's guide is by no means complete (for that, see Dowd's "Sea Kayaking") but it certainly does cover the essentials of the sport, and as others have noted, it is certainly sufficient to introduce a newcomer to all the essential techniques needed to get started. While no book is a replcement for a good teacher, Seidman gives you enough to get out and teach yourself basic strokes, braces and perhaps even rolls- though that's something best seen demonstrated first.
The photos are one of the strongest parts of the book, and a good argument for buying it- next to the "Perforamance Sea Kayaking" video Seidman's book has the best illustrations of basic moves to be found anywhere. If you were only going to buy one kayaking book, this would not be a bad choice- but after working your way through it you'd be well advised to move on to more detailed and specialized books as well.
Very well written and informative.......1999-05-04
I got into sea kayaking after reading this book and it is all the author said and more. I've lent this book to a number of friends who are now also "hooked". This is an easy to read book, one that evokes the possibilities of kayaking along with information necessary to develop the confidence to make them happen. I highly recommend it to anyone considering this great sport.
Exactly the sort of basic kayaking book I was looking for.......1998-09-02
This book is exactly what I needed to guide me through the kayak shopping and learning process. It begins with equipment basics to help you choose what's right for you and proceeds step by step through other basics of kayak ownership, use and transportation. I recommend it to all beginning kayakers and to anyone who's considering buying a kayak.
Covers technique & basic gear for beginner/intermediate........1998-07-15
This was the first book I bought after purchasing my kayak. It covers the gear you will need for paddling, safety and clothing. As well as discussing basic paddling and bracing strokes, a number of rescue techniques are covered, including the roll. Armed only with what I learned from the 8 pages on the eskimo roll, I went out and had myself rolling in two days. The book also include a chapter on family and handicapped paddling.
There is little coverage of extended or overnight trips.

Customer Reviews:
Change The Name Of Your Book PLEASE.......2007-08-28
THE TITLE of this book is horrible!!! A huge marketing disaster!!!!! What bride dreaming and planning a wedding wants to be an "Anti-Bride"? Little girls fantasize of getting married and when they do become one they are thrilled about being a bride. That being said please don't let the name scare you off. This book is a great RESOURCE book. It has a bride Fantasy Questionnaire that helps you visualize the place where you want to host your ceremony "from barns to boats" and reminds you to think of parking, bathrooms all the nitty gritty details. It also talks about Programs, Favors, Food, Drinks, The Cake, The Band, Shopping, Shoes, Dress, Alterations, what I am trying to say is all the nitty gritty details. It is thought provoking if you don't know where to start. Note: This book does not give ceremony hard details for vows, or readings, but great check lists and makes you think about all the small things that couple often overlook when planning a wedding.
Loved it! Absolutely what I was looking for........2006-12-16
After getting engaged, and knowing I didn't want a big white wedding with puffy dress and a gazillion people I hardly know feasting on beef or chicken, I set out to find a book for people like me.
The title put me off and I did overlook it at first, but after flicking through I discovered it wasn't anti-wedding, just anti-traditional old-fashioned wedding.
It's witty and full of relevant info and tips.
I loved the layout with the spiral binding inside and the different tabs for the different sections and the space to write planning details along the way (quotes, vendors, ideas etc).
My fiance is now reading it as as he flipped through it and loved it too!
I highly recommend this book as the first one to read if you're a cool, modern bride-to-be. It's definitely the best one I have come across in Border's. Great for a non-traditional girl like me!
Great Tool For Brides!.......2006-06-28
I have just started planning a very small destination wedding and I really love this planner.
After reading the online reviews of this and other planners I went to the store to browse in person and ended up buying this planner. It is a great size, sturdy (to bring with you everywhere) and spiral bound. The worksheets, quizes and checklists have been very helpful to me as well as all the tips.
Of course I have a few bridal magazines and do a lot of online research but I do not think I will need another planner besides this one. The book recommends buying an accordian folder to put all your cutouts, articles, contracts, etc in and that has worked great for me.
Like other reviewers, I would recommend going to the store to look at planners so you can choose which one will be right for you but if you are more non-traditional and do not want a generic wedding book I would definetly consider this planner.
Don't listen to the nay sayers..........2006-03-19
This book is great..it is not meant to be the only book you own to plan your wedding but it certainly has much of what I needed.
This book is first and formost an organizer and that is what I was loking for. It has some great tips and a nice setup to keep buisness cards, and other pieces of paper all in this one book. It has been invaluble so far. I bought this and the companion "Anti-Bride Etiquette Quide".
IF you want someone else to tell where to go and what to buy there are dozens of websites and magazines. I just wanted a book that can help me, a first time bride, know the ins and outs of weddings and what to do plan and organize the day! ANd this book is a great resource for that.
A dissapointment.......2006-02-08
I was hoping for something unique, but it's just like all the other pro-bride, pro-industry, pro-spend-a-LOT-of-money-on-a-wedding planners (but in a "non-traditional" pink disguise). The mere fact that it has diamond rings circling the page numbers should have been my first clue. If you are really looking for some unique and inspirational ideas, you will not find them here. That said, it is still a pretty decent planner, has a few (FEW) unique tips, and pockets and space for contact info, etc. Look it over in a bookstore if possible before you buy.

"The best way to understand the dramatic transformation of unknown books into bestsellers, or the rise of teenage smoking, or the phenomena of word of mouth or any number of the other mysterious changes that mark everyday life," writes Malcolm Gladwell, "is to think of them as epidemics. Ideas and products and messages and behaviors spread just like viruses do." Although anyone familiar with the theory of memetics will recognize this concept, Gladwell's The Tipping Point has quite a few interesting twists on the subject.
For example, Paul Revere was able to galvanize the forces of resistance so effectively in part because he was what Gladwell calls a "Connector": he knew just about everybody, particularly the revolutionary leaders in each of the towns that he rode through. But Revere "wasn't just the man with the biggest Rolodex in colonial Boston," he was also a "Maven" who gathered extensive information about the British. He knew what was going on and he knew exactly whom to tell. The phenomenon continues to this day--think of how often you've received information in an e-mail message that had been forwarded at least half a dozen times before reaching you.
Gladwell develops these and other concepts (such as the "stickiness" of ideas or the effect of population size on information dispersal) through simple, clear explanations and entertainingly illustrative anecdotes, such as comparing the pedagogical methods of Sesame Street and Blue's Clues, or explaining why it would be even easier to play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon with the actor Rod Steiger. Although some readers may find the transitional passages between chapters hold their hands a little too tightly, and Gladwell's closing invocation of the possibilities of social engineering sketchy, even chilling, The Tipping Point is one of the most effective books on science for a general audience in ages. It seems inevitable that "tipping point," like "future shock" or "chaos theory," will soon become one of those ideas that everybody knows--or at least knows by name. --Ron Hogan

Not a good book.......2007-10-18
This is not a good book. The author tries to make the book longer by talking about the same simple idea again and again. Just search on Google and you will get all the ideas in the book. I am not recommending anyone to buy this book.
Take care of the little things and the big things will all come together.......2007-10-17
For those that like to learn about how people act, react and think, this book is a fascinating read. I'm not much on non-novels; I usually get through them and think "what a waste of time, I could of read a good book". But with this book and the book Understanding: Train of Thought, I couldn't put them down. They are such easy reading; it is easy to retain the material and they keep you thinking long after. I liked them so much I bought more copies for my friends!
An Unabashed Fan for Good Reason.......2007-10-16
I'm a huge fan of Gladwell's work. Both Blink and Tipping Point are fantastically entertaining yet highly informative - a combination that I, as a writer, aspire to and one that Gladwell has clearly mastered.
Great read.......2007-10-15
Not the most innovative concept in marketing, but Galdwell did a very good job in explaining a complex phenomena by giving easy to follow examples. I particularly like the Boston Tea Party example.
Irrelevent Drivel.......2007-10-15
Yet another author who has found something interesting to write about, realizes there isn't enough to fill a book and then embarks on a meandering journey of sleep inducing, page filling drivel. In this case the subject is social epidemics. If you wipe out three quaters of this book you'd have a good read.

Product Description
The Tipping Point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. In this widely acclaimed New York Times® bestseller, Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, and looks at why major changes in our society so often happen suddenly and unexpectedly. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime rate. An intellectual adventure story and a road map to change, with a profoundly hopeful message that one imaginative person applying a well-placed lever can move the world.
