Book Description
Much progress has been made in elucidating the mechanisms regulating the induction and progression of inflammatory diseases. More recently, however, it has become apparent that the manipulation of mechanisms governing the resolution of inflammation is an important way to develop novel strategies for the therapy of such diseases. This book provides an up-to-date and comprehensive view on the resolution of inflammation and on new developments in this area (e.g. pro-resolution mediators, apoptosis, macrophage clearance of apoptotic cells, possible novel drug developments). The chapters are written by leading scientists in the field.
This topical volume is of interest to medical and scientific researchers in academia and industry working on inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases such as arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, atherosclerosis, and more.

Book Description
Apoptosis is a form of cell death that occurs in a controlled manner and is generally noninflammatory in nature. Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, implies a cell death that is part of a normal physiological process of pruning of unneeded cells. However, many disease conditions utilize apoptosis for pathological ends, resulting in inappropriate cell death and tissue destruction. This book starts with an introduction that reviews the general characteristics of apoptosis, its regulation and its role in physiology and disease. Next, the book focuses on three areas as they relate to inflammatory cells and diseases. The first area consists of chapters on signals for apoptosis important to inflammatory cells, namely growth factors and arachidonic acid metabolism. The next area that the book focuses on are effects at the cellular level, on cell survival versus cell death and signals critical for cell function in both normal and disease states. These topics are covered in chapters on lymphocytes, granulocytes, chondrocytes and keratinocytes. The last area that the book focuses on are events at the level of tissue and disease, looking at the evidence for altered apoptosis and/or apoptotic processes in immune and inflammatory diseases. These topics are covered in chapters on rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, psoriasis and renal disease. Together, these chapters will provide the reader with the latest insight in the role of apoptosis in inflammatory cells and diseases. Book Description
How are cancer and inflammation interrelated mechanistically and clinically? Though extensive literature exists on the topic "Cancer and Inflammation", there are relatively few texts that have truly integrated the two in spite of the many common mechanisms shared by their processes. Certainly, areas such as cytokines, growth factors, proliferation, signal transduction and angiogenesis, for example, are found in both. Yet, the dynamics of how these common mechanisms are maybe interrelated in the pathologies of the two is not widely covered. Such coverage, as presented in this volume, may help further understanding and bring new approaches to therapeutics.
The first section of the book discusses inflammatory mechanisms, studied in cellular and animal studies. The second part concentrates on clinical studies with antiinflammatory drugs in cancer treatment. The volume is written for biomedical researchers in the health care industry and in academia who are working in these areas.

Book Description
The ethiopathologies of autoimmune diseases are complex. A broad variety of cell types and gene products are involved. However, clinical and experimental evidence suggests that the importance of an individual factor changes during the course of the disease. Factors and cell types that induce acute autoreactivity and initiate an autoimmune disease could be distinct from those that drive a chronic course of that disease

Customer Reviews:
Success as a Real Estate Agent for Dummies.......2007-09-19
This book does have some usful tips. However, the author is obviously a career salesman. He appears to have grown his career from real estate sales to selling his own products ( seminars, web sites, and sales coaching). He equates financial success by selling, to being a quality agent. His focus seems to be on the typical salesperson's perspective ie. ABC (always be closing), not matching the client to the property they want, like and can aford.
Success as a Real Estate Agent For Dummies .......2007-08-06
This is a very comprehensive book for beginners and experienced realtors. It seems to be losely based on the teachings of Mike Ferry by an experienced agent who actually did what he writes. I highly recommend it with one reservation: much of it is very similar to the book The Champion Real Estate Agent written by the same author. If you buy one of the books you don't really need to buy both.
After three years I have finally found the secret(s) to success.......2007-07-19
New or 'aged' agents will get many valuable tips from this book. It is just packed with useful information that a successfull real estate agent (Dirk) has learned over the years. Don't make the same mistakes. Learn from his experience and be a top producer.
Fundamentals of Real Estate 101.......2007-07-16
This book is a must read for anyone considering a career in Real Estate as well as a refresher for experienced agents trying to get their business back on track. Dirk Zeller manages to distill a vast amount of experience down into a basic plan for success. (No magic bullets are promised: It involves honest work, but this book will help you manage your time better and allow you to concentrate on revenue producing activities.) For me personally, my biggest problems as an agent have been time management and spending too much time on non-revenue producing activities. These two areas of the book are worth the price alone. Highly recommended!
A MUST HAVE FOR ANYONE SERIOUS ABOUT REAL ESTATE SALES.......2007-07-16
Whether you're new to the business or have 20 years experience, this book contains all the basics essential for a successful career!

Customer Reviews:
The best "big book of verbs" out there.......2007-10-15
I went to my local bookstore (Powells!) and examined every "big verb book" they had. I decided on this one due to its easy-to-read layout and general comprehensiveness. There are plenty of contextual examples of usage for each verb, with expanded examples for the more commonly used verbs, especally in idioms (very helpful). There's a nice introduction to the various kinds of tenses. Honestly, though, the clincher was how well laid-out each page was. In a book like this, where the information is going to be essentially the same from version to version, ease of use and general clarity become the essential selling points. This has become my constant companion in my study of Italian. Oh, great index, too!
Excellent book.......2007-05-15
I'd read that this book was better than Barron's and I agree. It has good explanations of the tenses, with adequate examples. I like the layout of the conjugations in the format
1st person singular 1st person plural
2nd singular 2nd plural
3rd singular 3rd plural
much more than Barron's listing, I find it easier to read. There's a lot more examples given of usage, idioms, and related expressions. The CD I thought was a bit of a non-event, rather boring, and the multiple choice answers fairly obvious, testing you more on your ability to be a good guesser than to actually have a deep knowledge of the verbs. I definitely recommend this book, but don't bother with the CD version.
The Big Green Book of Italian Verbs with CD-ROM.......2007-04-11
This is a practice book that is good for any level of student of Italian. That it comes with a CD makes it even more useful. Only one problem I see --- it did not work on Windows Vista for me; but, there are no problems with XP.
Clear, comprehensive and good usage examples.......2007-03-17
This is a big but comprehensive book. The explanations are clear but not as spartan (thankfully) as some other texts. The usage examples are good - in the sense that they ring true. As always, one would like more examples but most of them connect the verb with its aligned prepositions (which is pretty essential in Italian). Overall, no complaints.
Better than 501 Italian verbs.......2006-08-14
The first thing I did when I got the Green Book was compare which verbs were covered in each book. First of all, there are 149 verbs in the "501" book that are not in the green book. The better news is that the Green Book has 203 verbs not included in the "501" book. That means I now have conjugations for 704 Italian verbs between the two books. I love all the examples and will use them as a study tool. I also appreciate the double pages for the 50 most important verbs. Finally, as an English major and avid grammarian, I was fascinated by the 36 pages which explain in detail how Italian verbs are formed. At Amazon's price of $10.17, this is a must for all those learning Italian.
Book Description
A witty assault on lame rhetoric, specious logic, and official BS
Here's a fast-paced, ruthlessly funny romp through the mulligan stew of illogic, unreason, and just plain drivel served up daily in the media by pundits, psychics, ad agencies, New Age gurus, statisticians, free trade ideologues, business "thinkers," and, of course, politicians. Award-winning young philosopher Jamie Whyte applies his laser-like wit to dozens of timely examples in order to deconstruct the rhetoric and cut through the haze of shibboleth and doubletalk to get at the real issues.
A troubleshooting guide to both public and private discourse, Crimes Against Logic:
- Analyzes the 12 major logical fallacies, with examples from the media and everyday life
- Takes no prisoners as it goes up against the scientific, religious, academic, and political establishments
- Helps you fine-tune your critical faculties and learn to skewer debaters on their own phony logic
Customer Reviews:
Misdemeanors Against Logic.......2007-10-09
This book is a fairly interesting read but the points it make may be obvious to readers who are careful thinkers or debators. There were few, if any, surprising points. Still, it may be worth reading for people who do not think about such things often or who would like to be "reminded" of the points contained in the book. It is clearly written and easy to understand. In addition, the book is a bit more interesting when it attempts to explain the reasons why individuals and entities commit their "crimes against logic" in the course of a debate. Indeed, being able to discern the motivation for the crime is probably a rarer skill (in the heat of a debate) than being able to recognize that a crime has occurred. Overall, an interesting read but it would not be on the top of my recommendation list.
Illogical Critique of Illogic!.......2007-09-02
Hopefully this snake will eat its own tail. As a math and science educator, I often need to teach my students about various aspects of logic. After my first formal logic class I took three more related classes in the philosophy departments at my various universities--and ultimately concluded that mathematicians handled logic far more elegantly--thereby avoiding the pit of "what makes a brick a brick?" crap!
Whyte displays intellectual arrogance veiled in a cloak of open inquiry to attempt an existential disproof of God by way of Pascal's wager--give me a break. The only method of disproof is exhasutive elimination--good luck!
Consider the following thought experiment. Given 1) a computer program whose purpose was to disprove the existence of its programmer, 2) that this is a perfectly logical program (with every data record in existence at its dispoal). Then the program could conclude that there is only annecdotal evidence for the programmer. Only a programmer that existed as a stand-alone digital construct could be measured and analyzed by every possible test which the program could devise. The best result such a program could deliver is that there is no quantitative reason to accept or deny the existence of Programmer. HOWEVER, I need only permit the program to make the very mildest of assumptions to confound the whole thing! If the program assumed that it could not exist without being created it becomes a creationist or intelligent design program. On the other hand, if it merely assumes the postulate that there is no higher reality or greater intelligence than itself, then the concept of a programmer becomes absurd. Note that neither case in any way changes the fact of the programmers existence.
The ONLY logical and scientific statement about the origin of our universe and ourselves is that "WE DON'T KNOW." I'm sorry to paraphrase Carl Sagan as he committed the latter fallacy and was in the latter (an absurd God) case.
In our lives, we may believe one thing or another; most of us modify what we believe at least occassionally. However, our beliefs are only the transient paint coating the grand architecture that is human knowledge!
Whyte, and so many of his ilk, have set before themselves an impossible task. On the one hand, we mustn't call them fools for their ambition. On the other hand, as honorable and intellectually impartial thinkers we cannot tolerate fallacies--especially in the guise of a mimic species threatening to push an endangered species into extinction.
Avoid this elegant yet deceptive philosophy. Learn logic with a variety of great resources such as Tarski's book (search for other books under "logic" and "critical thinking"). Schaum's outlines, LSAT prep books, boolean logic texts, digital circuit logic, and many great volumes and texts on the subject are worth the time of anyone who is intellectually determined to grasp this subject. The cover of Whyte's book hearkens back to Peter Sellers' movie "Being There" (1979). Sadly the book is as devoid of the thing it claims to demand as was the mind of Chance, the simple groundskeeper whose plain words so naturally lent themselves to profound interpretations in that movie.
Required for everyone with a brain.......2007-08-12
Not only is this informative, it's fun. Everyone who reads newspapers, engages in political debate, or pays for professional business advice should read this as soon as possible.
A good book that makes you go "ah-ha".......2007-07-20
While this was purchased as a summer beach read for me, I really enjoyed it more than I expected. The ideas presented are done so in an easily understandable fashion and are still entertaining while educational. Overall, a good light read on the subject of trends.
Interesting, helpful, definitely full of wisdom.......2007-07-04
Content wise, this book is about fallacies and how to spot them in everyday life. It's an excellent book which certainly helps mortals to cleanse "bad thoughts". For sure a real good buy! Dont miss it!
p.s. With all the great examples, I like the following in the chapter about "Empty words" the most.
1. "Science no longer holds any absolute truths."...The first sentence of a passage but already with one obvious falsehood and two serious confusions...Pg 30-32
2. Bad example:- Benchmarked against best in class peers, intellectual capital leverage reveals significant upward potential moving forward. What it really means:- Companies like yours make better use of their employees' knowledge. Pg 53-56
Remark: This is in fact the US version of the original UK release "Bad Thoughts". I love the new version much more (and give it one more star) for its relatively plain English.
Product Description
When Roger Wilkes decided to reopen the file on the fifty-year-old Wallace murder case to make a radio documentary, he knew he was taking on one of the most celebrated unsolved mysteries in the history of British crime. Ever since the night in January, 1931 when the body of Julia Wallace was found on the floor of her Liverpool sitting-room, her head crushed by a series of violent blows, police, criminologists, journalists, even novelists, have been trying to agree on the identity of her killer. Was it her husband, who was tried, found guilty and sentenced to hang for murder, only to be acquitted on the grounds of insufficient evidence? Wilkes knew there had initially been another major suspect in the case, a young man who had a curious relationship with both Wallace and his wife. Why had the police let possible charges against him quietly drop? How could Wilkes get some new answers. His approach was novel: as News Editor of Radio City, Liverpool's independent radio station, Wilkes had access over the air to anyone who might have been involved in the case, still be alive, and willing to talk. In making a carefully researched programme to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Julia Wallace's death, he appealed for information. He could not foresee the tremendous response he would get - or how astonishing and significant one particular revelation would be. This book is the story of the making of that programme, and a subsequent one, taking some startling new evidence from the public into account. It has all the ingredients of a classic whodunnit - an intricate piece of detection vividly described; a mysterious other woman still unwilling to talk, a crucial witness overlooked by the police, a wronged man and a ruined life, a villain allowed to go free, a possible cover-up - all the more compelling for being real. Most significant of all, Roger Wilkes names the man he feels really did kill Julia Wallace, and describes how, and why, he did it.
