Book Description
Nature employs a wide variety of sex determining mechanisms and it is only comparatively recently that the tools have become available for these to be explored at the cellular and molecular levels. A major landmark was the discovery in 1990 of the SRY gene and the subsequent demonstration of its key role in triggering male sex determination in transgenic mice.
This book reviews and discusses our current understanding of the molecular genetic pathways of sex determination, with special emphasis on vertebrates. It features comparisons with other modes of sex determination, consideration of the biology of sexual development and discussion of the evolution of sex-determining mechanisms.
By bringing together an international and interdisciplinary group of experts who study many different aspects of the problem, the book highlights much new and exciting work in this area and serves to identify and stimulate promising new research directions.

Book Description
Following an opening chapter by the late Susumu Ohno on paralogues of sex-determining genes, the five best-studied genes essential for early mammalian gonadal development are portrayed in detail: SF-1 and WT1 and their roles in early events in gonadal development, SRY and SOX9 in testis determination, and the anti-testis gene DAX-1. Subsequent chapters look at the roles of these genes in sex determination in marsupial mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, and review the different sex-determining mechanisms, genetic and environmental, that operate in these different vertebrate classes. Two insights emerge: one, that the same basic set of genes appears to operate during early gonadal development in all vertebrates, despite the differences in mechanisms; the other, that sex determination in vertebrates results from a complex network of regulatory interactions and not from a simple hierarchical cascade of gene actions.

Book Description
The Genetical Theory of Natural Selection by R.A. Fisher (1930) dictated that sexual dimorphisms may depend upon a single medelian factor. This could be true for some species but his suggestion could not take off the ground as gender in Drosophila is determined by the number of X chromosomes. Technical advances in molecular biology have revived the initial thinking of Fisher and dictate that TDF or SRY genes in humans or Tdy in mice are sex determining genes. The fortuitous findings of XX males and XY female, which are generally termed sex reversal phenomenon, are quite bewildering traits that have caused much amazement concerning the pairing mechanism(s) of the pseudoautosomal regions of human X and Y chromosomes at meiosis. These findings have opened new avenues to explore further the genetic basis of sex determination at the single gene level.
The aim of the fourth volume, titled Genetics of Sex Determination is to reflect on the latest advances and future investigative directions, encompassing 10 chapters. Commissioned several distinguished scientists, all pre-eminent authorities in each field to shed their thoughts concisely but epitomise their chapters with an extended bibliography. Obviously, during the past 60 years, the metoric advances are voluminous and to cover every account of genes, chromosomes, and sex in a single volume format would be a herculean task. Therefore, a few specific topics are chosen, which may be of great interest to scientists and clinicians. The seasoned scientists who love to inquire about the role of genes in sex determination should find the original work of these notable contributors very enlightening. This volume is intended for advanced students who want to keep abreast as well as for those who indulge in the search for genes of sex determination.

Book Description
In this era of accelerated discovery and prolific output,
Molecular Genetics of Sex Determination keeps readers abreast of this fields fast-moving biology. Its chapters were completed by experts in eacharea only months before publication. The text is organized into two parts. First, it reviews the basic biology of sex determination and summarizes ground-breaking work in mouse, marsupial, and Drosophila systems. Second, it covers current human genetics, clinical studies, and the syndromes of abnormal sex differentiation.
With chapters by preeminent reproductive biologists, this is a capital work. Ohno's law is described by Ohno; the Lyon hypothesis, by Lyon; Sinclair tells how he cloned the testis-determining gene; and so on.
Molecular Genetics of Sex Determination is authoritative, comprehensive, and current. It is prime reading for geneticists, developmental biologists, graduate students in these and related fields, clinical researchers, physicians, and medical students.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting and eye-opening.......2007-09-10
A very good, behind-the-scenes look at the NFL from a player's perspective. It may not give everyone the "dirt" on specific players that they might want, but it does give the reader a unique view of the NFL from the player's perspective. I learned a lot by reading it and was fascinated to know what it's like for an NFL recruit/rookie.
If you are an NFL fan, it's worth reading.
Great Bathroom Book! (If you care about Football).......2007-05-30
Folks, there are people in this country for whom NFL Football is more like a religion than an entertainment. These people know the names and histories of players going back for decades. The finely tuned nuances of the "game" are grist for their conversational mills. For folks like that, this is a "must have" book.
I, on the other hand, cannot even name all the current teams in the NFL, or even tell you how many of them there are. I know the names of one or two players, I've even attended one game. So for me this book was one to fill a passing curiosity.
Tim Green knows his stuff. He's been there, done that. 8 years of wear and tear with the Atlanta Falcons provide the background for his experience. However Tim Green also has a law degree, took real courses while in University, and still has a few coins after his NFL career ended.
If you have ever heard his commentaries on NPR, or as a color commentator on NFL game broadcasts on the FOX TV Network, you know that this guy is very intelligent, insightful, and well spoken. This translates to the printed page very well.
The oddity of the book is that it appears to be made up from a series of his NPR reports. The longest "chapter" is only 4 pages, and most are two pages or less. For this type of subject matter, these were about as fulsome "doses" as I would ever want to handle.
However for the football fan or the non-fan, this has, in the brevity of its sections, one outstanding virtue -- it makes the ideal "bathroom book".
Would I recommend it? If you are a rabid NFL fan, this is a "must have book". If you couldn't care less about the NFL, pass it up. For the remainder of the world at large, buy it and get some true insights into the "backstage" world of professional sport.
Dark Side Not Up To Hype.......2006-04-18
This book does tell somewhat of what its like in the NFL, but on most of the accounts its based on one persons view. I am sure the writer had first hand knowledge, but he paints a picutre of the NFL that makes it look bad. In a time where image is everything the writer seems to paint a bad picture of the NFL. I found the book hard to read and it too me a long time to read it. There are other NFL books out there that I am sure are better, but I have yet to find one. This book is ok, it takes you behind the scenes in the locker rooms, the training rooms, the hotels and travel. It gives you a first hand look at what the players do on the field and off the field. However I don't think it was written all that well.
The Dark Side of the Game : My Life in the NFL.......2006-03-10
Excellent insight into big time football. Tim Green is on his way to the writer's Superbowl.
there's no meat in here.......2005-11-18
This book would be great if Tim Green actually named a few names aside from the guys he's talking up (see Dion, Steve Young).
Instead it's a continuous cycle of 'a player I once played with/against' did some unthinkable act. The end result is that no one cares what Green has to say because he never takes any risks and the reader becomes bored quickly.
Quick tip: Read Lawrence Taylor's second autobiography for the real inside scoop on life in the NFL. LT holds nothing back, especially on himself. Now THAT's a book I couldn't put down.

Unbelievable..........2007-01-16
I'm so surprise I can get this book since I got Amazon notice have stock for me to order..... being this is already two years ago..... and 50th Anniversary Edition......
This book is really really fun and make me more more understand the Guinness Records.....
I'm very high recommand this book in your library.....
An essential reference tool........2006-03-14
Whilst some readers will always buy the latest edition of this book because they are interested in the largest, tallest, fastest or whatever, personally I have always found this book to be a first class reference source.
It was from the Guinness Book of records that I learned that the largest Turtle known to man was a giant Leatherback Turtle which (to my great surprise) was washed up on the shores of Ireland - and "not" some Caribbean country as one might expect.
Of course, not all the records are repeated from one edition into the next or each book would be identical except for any new records achieved during the past 12 months. For this reason, the reader might need to collect a few editions of the book in order to have as good a collection of records as possible.
Just a few loose thoughts really.

Review of the section on 'Language and Literature'.......2005-08-30
This review relates to the section on 'Language and Literature' only.
I hate to be a party- pooper but unlike most other reviews of this book I found it to be dismal and self- serving, to say the least.
Guinness informs us in this section that the best- selling book of all time after the Bible and the Koran is the Guinness Book of Records. I have my doubts about the accuracy of this and it seems to me more like a piece of self- advertisment than anything else. Tasteless, even if true.
Worse . The editors of the book do not seem to realize that in Literature it is quality that counts, even when one is measuring quantity. It is absolutely insignificant that some person named Jones happen to put the most words on paper in writing a thing he called a novel. It is however of significance that of all the very long novels ever written Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' is the greatest. There is no hint of Tolstoy,Shakespeare, Dante, or any of the other greats of world- literature in the section on literature.
Trivia and even quadrivia need to be more significant than this if they are to be of real interest.

Car Design Yearbook 3.......2004-11-07
Volumes 1 and 2 in this series were sensatioanl and highly recommended. The newest volume is a disappointment in terms of what is omitted. The entire Chicago Auto Show and its premiers are simply, for whatever reason not presented as well as the wild Ford Cobra concept which debuted at the NAIAS. Missing are the Dodge Dakota, Buick LaCrosse, and Mercury Montego introductions. Also missing are the GM crossover sport vans such as the Chevrolet Uplander, Saturn Relay et al. Compounding these omissions is the fact that the photos of the new for 2005 Honda Odyssey are those of the preceding model. So while this is still perhaps a worthwhile addition to one's automotive library,
it is not what it should be based on previous volumes. Perhaps the problem lies with the mention that the Tokyo Auto Show generated so many concepts that there was not enough space. Also frustrating is the fact that, even though the book comes out six months after the New York Auto Show, its debuts will be included in the next volume.
