Book Description
Whether considering toxicant exposure in zebrafish, or the application of cellular diagnostics to marine toxicology, or the ecotoxicology of coral reef ecosystems, or the amount of metalloids in water, this reference offers the protocols for specimen collection that researchers need. Following up on his popular Techniques in Aquatic Toxicology with a second volume, now nine years later, Dr. Ostrander has once again called on the top aquatic toxicologists from across the world to present 39 chapters of unique collection and testing procedures. Updating five techniques from the first volume, the authors have gone on to add over two dozen new techniques. Like the first volume, this text divides the chapters into four broad areas: Techniques for the Assessment of Toxicity in Whole Organisms, Cellular and Subcellular Toxicity, Contaminant Identification, and Impacts in Aquatic Ecosystems, and ends with a General Techniques section that anyone working in the field should find useful. Every chapter covers a specific procedure that can easily be reproduced by any competent technician with basic knowledge. Each of the chapter authors provides and interprets typical as well as anomalous results, false positives, and artifacts. Data is provided either from recently published experiments or from work being published for the first time.

Book Description
In Analysis of Contaminants in Edible Aquatic Resources, aspects of the analysis for contaminants in food of aquatic origin are examined. The book covers the most common contaminants, as well as a few of the emerging groups like antimicrobials and tainting. With the number of new chemicals being introduced into the aquatic environment, the analytical chemistry of toxicants is becoming increasingly complex and expensive. The analyis of these toxicants in biologigal tissues add a new dimension of difficulty and quite often, whole methodologies must be reinvented. One aspect of the process of determining contaminant levels that is often overlooked or misunderstood by analysts, is that of sampling.
Analysis of Contaminants in Edible Aquatic Resources examines all aspects of the analytical process, from sampling through storage, work-up, analysis and information management. The book assists analysts in choosing the most suitable methodology for analysis of specific contaminants by broadening their outlook on the process of analysis.

Outstanding book from beginner to expert in regatta.......2007-03-03
I praticed sailing since several years and regatta since 1 year.
This book is an outstanding to everybody wanting to improve his or her perrformance on regatta. Gary wrote about all tips he learnt during his career and give you advice on everything. With this book you will learn all the basis to really improve yourself in wind lecture, tactics, start, finish, performance and team management.
This book may be read from beginner to expert. But the best target audience is intermediate or advanced sailors who wants to improve their performance.
For someone you haven't take lessons in regatta and learn by experience, this book will be a great help.
For an expert who already knows about performance and wind lecture, he/she can make huge progress on tactics and team management. Moreover, one can refer to the book whenever one has a problem to solve.
I live in France where there is a long tradition of regatta and famous sailors. In my country, you can find outsanding books in sailing technics, wheather forecast, boat architecture, cruising, small boat regatta, but I haven't found a good regatta book for keel boats. Think about it.
Packed with useful information.......2007-01-18
I'm new to sailboat racing, having finished my first season of racing on my new boat last year. And I didn't do nearly as well as I should have given my boat. I immediately identified from every chapter things I was doing wrong, at the starts, trimming sails, communication on the boat, and in how I was organizing the crew. I marked specific pages with sticky notes that I especially wanted to refer back to and by the time I was done with the book I must have marked 40 pages.
The book has tons of useful technical information on starts, sail trim, etc. written in a way that is easy to understand. The shaded summaries at the end of many of the sections is helpful as well. But Gary Jobson also goes into how important attitude and practice are to successful sailboat racing. This book could just as easily be an effective business management book (but much more fun to read).
I can't wait to try to apply what I've learned from this book to the upcoming racing season.
Very nice.......2007-01-16
A very instructive reading for those who looks for a sail teacher who is a natural leader and a national hero, I liked very much.
A Great Guide for Intermediate and Advanced Racers.......2006-02-19
Gary Jobson's "Championship Sailing" is a very useful text for skippers and crew wishing to improve their racing results. This is not a "Racing for Dummies" book. I am not sure this would be easy to understand book if the reader is a novice racer. My sense is that Gary assumes the reader already knows the rules, knows how to sail, and has participated in at least some races.
The book has useful tactical advice. For example Chapter 4, Strategy at the Start, provides a wealth of useful advice on starting tactics written in a clear style with easy to follow diagrams. There is a lot to this book. It is wide in scope but also deep in its treatment of the topics. It is well-organized and engaging.
Gary's book is suitiable for a wide racing audience, including those who race in one-design or handicap fleets. His advice applies to dingy racers, maxi racers, and everyone in-between. However I sense that his examples tend to be slightly more applicable to one-design racers than handicap fleet racers, like myself. That is not a criticism, just a perception. This is a book you study and refer back to, not just read through once. this would be an excellent text book for a racing training program. The book is a gift at only $25 a copy.
Solid Advice from a Respected Racer.......2005-09-02
Jobson's book is great reading for the sailboat racing enthusiast, whether a beginner, or someone refreshing their skills.
Jobson does a great job organizing the content of the book. Readers can turn to any chapter that piques their interest to find useful information. Or, they can read it cover-to-cover. It's also well written with technical explanations simplified and easy to understand.
Racing tactics and sail trim were my favorites. The book helped provide consensus on what's right while on the water in the grip of a race.

Very Creative.......2007-09-04
This book was great! It was full of questions that I would probably never think to ask my grandmother and the book is not cheap in any way. Aside from questions and answers there are envelopes inside the book and also slots at the end of each little chapter for pics. It's really a neat book and I think my grandmother will enjoy reliving old memories while filling in this book. It will be a good read for me someday as well. I wish I could have given one to my great grandmother before she starting forgetting things.
Nice book but not what I was looking for.......2007-02-14
I had gone back and forth trying to find the best book to have my parents fill out for my new daughter and I settled on this one. Most of the books are for one individual to fill out. I got confused with all the books I was looking at and purchased this one thinking that it was for both grandparents to fill out together however it is not. It is a nice book and the grandparents are going to try to fill it out jointly, however it is not easily set up for that.
Memories for My Grandchild.......2006-07-18
The book has tons of space to put family information and pictures.
the only problem is it will take me a year to complete the project!!! But when it is done it will be a wonderful keepsake for both my grandchildren. I bought on copy and when I saw how nice ist was I oreder another.
Add this book to your Baby Registry!.......2006-05-16
My wife and love this book. The book's thoughtful questions lead you effortlessly through the process of creating your own family documentary. Now that we're parents-to-be (4 more months and counting), we can't wait to give it to our own parents/soon-to-be grandparents. A must-have addition to every baby registry!
A perfect baby gift.......2005-07-23
I just got 2 copies of this for my friend's new baby... or, rather, for the baby to "give" her grandmothers. Most of the other gifts my she received are things that she will grow out of, but this is one she'll have forever. It's amazing how the stories have engaged her whole family! The book is beautiful - I'd recommend it to anyone lucky enough to have grandparents with them.

Perfect amount of Questions........2007-09-25
I bought this book to give to my mother. I want her to fill it out for the child that I am expecting in December. I really liked this grandma's journal because it had the perfect amount of questions. There are questions about where she grew up, what her parents were like, her first job, where she currently lives, and favorites.
My mother and father are divorced, but I felt like the section on "Grandpa" was not too overwhelming. I bought several journals looking for one that didn't focus too much on Grandpa. I almost didn't buy this one because of the previous comment, but I am so glad that I did buy it. Many of the other grandma journals would take over a year to complete because of the in depth questioning. I can't stress enough that this journal asks the perfect amount of questions. I am also glad that I am giving it to my mother because I don't know how she will answer many of the questions. It is a good opportunity for me to learn about my mother and her marriage to my father.
To anyone who is concerned about the Grandpa section, there are 6 pages that cover grandpa/marriage. The questions are:
1. When I met my husband-to-be we were
2. He was
3. I couldn't believe he
4. What I liked best about him was
5. He told me
6. We dated for
7. Our favorite thing to do was
8. The things we had in common were
9. The one thing we differed on was
10. He asked me to marry him on
11. I married Grandpa on
12. The wedding was held at
13. I wore
14. Your Grandpa wore

21. We loved to get away to
22. The thought of starting our own family was
23. I became pregnant
24. I gave birth to ...on
25. Other children include
My parents have been divorced for 27 years and I think that all of the above questions are tasteful and appropriate.
Keepsake Journal.......2007-04-05
This is a very nice book for recording your life for grandchildren; my only complaint is that in this world of combined families it is difficult to record facts, past and present, of ex-spouses and current husbands. There is one section for Grandpa; well my grandchildren call my current husband Grandpa, as well as my ex. There is no place to record for both. So I will probably just fill in what I can and leave the rest blank. With a family that is still "intact" this is a great journal.
Book Description
More than just pages of ingredients, this book is a special way to record priceless moments, special events, and family traditions that grandmother loves to share-a lifetime keepsake and family treasure. With journal prompts at the beginning of each chapter-some for Grandmother and some for Grandchild-to fill out, the emphasis is more on the recipes and activities that Grandmother and Grandchild can do together.

Book Description
In this gripping, in-the-trenches account of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict, award-winning journalist Matt Rees takes us deep within Israeli and Palestinian societies to reveal the fractures at the core of both. While the world focuses almost exclusively on the violent clash between the two camps, Rees steers our gaze toward their centers, exposing the internal rifts that drain each society of its ability to act cohesively. The Palestinians focus on the occupation of the West Bank, the Jewish settlers, and other Israeli actions, while the Israelis see only the intifada and the suicide bombings -- and both overlook their bitter infighting. This dazzling, groundbreaking narrative goes behind the familiar moves of the big players to reveal the individuals who are at war not only with the enemy, but also with their own people.
Beginning with the astonishing story of a Hamas member who is targeted both by Israel for his hand in attacks against Jews, and by the Palestinian Authority for the revenge killing of a police officer who murdered his brother, each chapter concentrates on one or two individuals with whom Rees has personal contact, and whose stories uncover the chaos at the hearts of these two warring groups. From Palestinian car thieves and filmmakers to Israeli settlers and Holocaust survivors, Rees traces the minute and numerous ways that Yasser Arafat betrays his people and the Israeli leadership veers between placating and abusing its clashing factions.
Rees has unparalleled access to groups and people on both sides of the conflict, as well as an extraordinary talent for looking beyond the usual stories. In Cain's Field, he suggests that the world has been looking in the wrong place to explain the unending battles and in the wrong place for a solution. With heartbreaking detail, incisive revelations, and terrible and often moving stories of the human beings behind the intractable attitudes and violence, Rees offers a bold new perspective on this tragic and seemingly insoluble situation. In so doing, he also offers hope -- the hope that by turning the spotlight inward, these societies might heal their internal wounds and move toward a peaceful future.

Refreshing yet sad window into the Middle East.......2007-08-29
Matt Rees is to be commended for arriving at an understanding of the Arabs of Israel, a people he respects and sympathizes with, without pandering to them.
His understanding of the Arab culture is deep and well researched. It is amazing to read a man who truly understands the nuances of Moslem-Palestinian society. A must read for all interested in developing a better understanding of the region. The book is at times painful and disturbing. For weeks I could not sleep at night when my thoughts turned to it. Yet, I am grateful to Matt Rees for opening that culture to me. I have since read other works by him, this time in the form of fiction and media articles.
CAIN'S FIELD--A MATTER OF FAITH.......2005-01-02
Over the past decade or so, I have lived in Jerusalem for extended periods of time working on secular projects. The episodes recounted by Rees are very similar to those I have experienced, so there was nothing new in what Rees has reported. His chapter on the Israeli treatment of the Holocaust victims (5, pages 143 ff) and his expose on Ben-Gurion are provocative in the extreme and certain to raise eye-brows inasmuch as he constantly exposes Ben-Gurion's dark side. One can only hope that Rees has not taken those statements out-of-context and twisted them for his own purposes.
Rees is a reporter and when he sticks to his subject, the narrative is compelling. I do, however, take exception to what I term his "pulp psychology" (especially pages 172 and again 277, but elsewhere as well). His attempt to equate suicide killings with the Holocaust is, in my view, a disservice to the victims of that one horrific episode in human history. The suicide bombers act randomly and are not systematically thorough in their heinous crimes as were the Nazis in their pogrom. To forge such a link as Rees does minimizes, in my view, the enormity of the Holocaust and plays right into the hands of those who would deny its existence. Suicide bombing are a daily occurrence; so are deadly car accidents. To suggest an equation implies that the Holocaust was also just another, similar, but regrettable, tragedy, and that moves it from the realm of horror into the ambit of just another sad event.
But even if one were to disagree with this assessment of mine, Rees' reductive argument runs counter to the premise of his exegesis. Namely, the Israeli-Palestinian issue is nuanced and cannot be reduced to a simplistic bi-polar set of opposites, which is how the press continues to regard the situation. In my estimation, the equation of Rees damages his premise because he reduces that one horrific event to a black-and-white, bi-polar set of circumstances.
In his attempt to distance his presentation from that of a sheer reporting of the facts and elevate it to the level of a more thought-provoking work, Rees ingeniously works his narrative around and constantly returns to the Cain=farmer/Abel=shepherd dialectic which is so critical to his exegesis. My careful re-reading of the Bible (and I candidly admit that it was in English translation and not in the original Hebrew) reveals that Rees has overlooked one significant aspect of that dialectic. Namely that God did not reject that which Abel offered, it was Cain's faith which made his gift acceptable. This is made patently clear in God's questioning and admonition of Cain in which there is no mention whatsoever about the offering:
Yahweh asked Cain, "Why are you angry and downcast? If you are doing right, surely you ought to hold your head high! But if you are not doing right, Sin is crouching at the door hungry to get you. You can still master him." (Genesis 4:6-7)
The dialectic which Rees creates is all about faith, and in the end, it is not individual matters of faith which are the engines driving the disparate parties toward their own goals and objectives in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?
The stories you don't hear - And I thought I knew it all,..........2005-01-01
I had considered myself well read about the Israeli/Arab conflict in general and then I heard Matt Rees speak two months ago about this new book. He told me quite a few things I never knew before (mostly about the Palestinians). I bought his book on the spot and don't regret it. He is a good story teller and delves into issues and people that I don't read about in both the general and special interest media that covers this part of the world. I now have a better understanding about the issues that each side deals with internally (and especially about the Palestinian side).
Highly Recommended!
A Fresh Look at an Old Problem.......2004-12-14
Amazon - Matt Rees book
When a subject like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been covered extensively in the daily press for decades, when numerous biographies and memoirs exist already on the major political players in the conflict, writing another book on Israeli-Palestinian relations seems a daunting task. Accordingly, Matt Rees deserves a great deal of credit for figuring out new things to say and new ways of looking at the conflict, and making all of us involved in the Middle East look at the conflict with new filters. Rees' premise - that Israelis and Palestinians have to learn to live with themselves before they can live with each other -- is indeed a fresh and welcome approach to problem-solving in the conflict. For years it was always taken for granted on the Israeli side that the religious and social differences of the Israelis would have to await solution until the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was resolved. Rees turns that premise on its head and shows why on both sides people have to end their own internal conflicts first before they can have any hope of reaching a lasting peace settlement. The most compelling aspects of Rees' well-written, deeply-researched book are the series of portraits he provides on both the Palestinian and Israeli sides. These portraits are so rich, and highly-textured, and his narrative moves so briskly, that one has the feeling of moving through a novel, not a piece of non-fiction. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants an engrossing and accurate picture of the most perplexing of the world's conflicts.

Jerusalem, Israel
Must read!.......2004-12-12
I have a deep interest and knowledge of Israel and I am not interested in reading repitious material, of which there is so much. However, "Cain's Field" is original. The first time I went to Israel, I read several books in advance, and in one, every person interviewed had a story. There were compelling stories of their backgrounds and how they got to Israel. "Cain's Field" was, for me, a continuation, a weaving together of stories of people of different backgrounds, each story wrapped up with the story of the country, young people figuring out where they fit into this world, the land of conflicts. The book is full of good drama, meticulously researched, shows authority and sensitivity. Most of all it is excellent reporting and not judgmental. It is fair and balanced and gives everyone equal time, four chapters each. I found the stories penetrating and provocative and Rees seems to have an understanding of the colliding cultures not available to ordinary readers and newscasters. I recommend "Cain's Field", it will entice you, pull you in during the first chapter with the intrigues of conflicts and betrayals. I could not put it down and read it in three sittings! Good gift idea!

A reasonable review that shares some problems with the reviewed book.......2007-08-15
This article is a review of the book, "Cain's field," by Matt Rees. I did not like that book. I found it misleading. The author told plenty of anecdotes about Israel. But these were not very sympathetic to anyone.
There are Arabs and Jews living in the West Bank. That's disputed land. I was interested in seeing how Rees treated them. Did he admit that the Jews on the West Bank were mainly natives living in their homeland? No, instead he implied that they were there for not entirely legitimate religious reasons. And he concentrated on questions of revenge, as if that made it legitimate or illegitimate for people to live in their homeland!
Rees also spent quite some time discussing the grave of a Jewish murderer, Baruch Goldstein. I think this was to show a false and misleading symmetry between the West Bank Jews, a people who simply want the rights of human beings, and some of the Arabs who are trying to deny them the rights of human beings.
I suspected that many of those who read the book would come away with the impression that both sides are wicked aggressors. And that is simply false.
Well, so much for Rees? What about Rubner? I think his review, while thorough, has some of the same problems as the book. Rubner, to his credit, uses a couple of more recent political events to show the internal problems in both Israel and the Levantine Arab community. And that does support some of what Rees says in his book. Rubner also spends some time on Rees' explanations for the increasing popularity of Hamas, and I think that's important.
Rubner then mentions instances where Israel has mistreated Jewish survivors, and indicates that a society that mistreats its own may feel even less sensitivity to the plights of others. But I think this needs to be put into context, as Israel has done quite a bit for Jewish refugees as well as for others.
Rubner does say that Rees makes the point that each side in the Arab-Israeli conflict "exists in a fantasy world of blamelessness." But that's not true, and both Rees and Rubner ought to say so. Israel desperately needs peace, and the majority of Israelis are very quick to blame themselves, often unreasonably, for the absence of peace. And the message that those who brutalize their own are unlikely to come to terms with the Other may make sense, but it cuts both ways: those who refuse to come to terms with the Other are likely to brutalize their own. I feel that both Rees and Rubner seriously exaggerate Israel's problems in these respects.
