Book Description
During the Green Revolution in many developing countries, agroforestry systems tended to reflect modern agricultural systems by their intensive use of fertilizers, pesticides, and site modifications to fit the desired crop. Since the 1980's, agroforestry has learned from traditional indigenous systems to work more closely with the fertility of marginal lands through the use of less intensive cultivation and fallow periods. True to its title, this volume provides a silvicultural framework for thinking about the design and practice of agroforestry systems. Unlike many general agroforestry books, The Silvicultural Basis for Agroforestry Systems emphasizes research and thoughts from a forestry perspective rather than an agricultural one. Many of the examples used in this reference are based on the ecological theory of forests that concern the competition for resources of plant-plant and plant-animal mixtures. This guide also uses the knowledge gained about the temporal and spatial dynamic and productivity of forests as the basis for silvicultural applications in agroforestry systems. The Silvicultural Basis for Agroforestry Systems contains three parts:

Customer Reviews:
Pocket encyclopedia .......2007-07-24
Very comprehensive of vital, fragile, and pressure points throughout human body. Master Long sprung for a professional illustrator this time and it definitely improves understanding of context. Only complaint is that in all pictures of Master Long versus opponent, they are clad in shiny ninja uniforms that obscure immediate recognition of described technique
An excellent source for those who need to protect themselves..........2006-12-19
As always, I will be frank about the book to the extent of my knowledge and not pretend I'm some incredible genius when it comes to the subject, as some reviewers appear to be sometimes...
So you might judge my bias or qualifications for yourself, I am a martial artist and I've been studying it for 6 and 1/2 years, though I don't consider myself the greatest source, but take my word for what it's worth. I am also a student in a pre-medical field (I haven't decided precisely which path I'll take, but I have an idea) and am fairly knowledgeable on the subject of human anatomy. The idea of combining human anatomy and martial arts seemed like an interesting concept to me, so I bought this book and began reading it.
Concerning the content itself, the targets are accurate and, to say the least, very painful if struck. All of the anatomy and results of strikes are as they are stated (as far as I am aware). The pictures usually give one or two ways of attacking a target area and are usually pretty useful ways. Seeing the targets being attacked on a human in a picture is very helpful in locating precisely where the pressure point is when combined with the indication in the anatomy diagrams (if there was any confusion). To be honest, however, if this book was truly for anyone to use for self defense (as it seemed to indicate in the introduction), it might have been useful for Master Hei Long not to use such obscure Kung Fu stances. Such stances are definitely not helpful to those who haven't taken Kung Fu and I don't think they help the reader learn where the targets are and how to attack them. These stances are the only cons I can think of for this book.
The strikes and targets themselves are excellent and, if the reader has any ability to strike, most of the targets would disable most attackers. There are, of course, no guarantees, since the knowledge of the targets will not help someone who does not attack or cannot strike with enough force to damage the target (some targets require substantial force to disable the attacker and some require very little force). These qualifiers are the responsibility of the reader. Nonetheless, if the reader is able and willing to strike, he/she will be able to use at least some of these targets no matter what the skill level or strength level.
To sum up, I highly suggest this book to any girl or woman who fears for her safety in a big city or college campus or any situation for that matter. I would also suggest, if you have no previous martial arts experience, you learn martial arts before, after, or while you read this book because the knowledge of these targets and the skills of the martial art will build off of each other and greatly increase your ability to defend yourself.
Mid-level training manual.......2006-01-05
Master Long is the Kung Fu teacher you will never have the chance to train with and he is surely more dangerous than "randmeister" from Ohio.
As Master Long says, most school nowadays are run by the moto: A student is a fee, a test is a fee, a rank is a fee. Giving rank to an undeserving student is dishonorable yet I have seen it happen too often. The worst part is the student feels prepared for a violent encounter.
The book focuses on the 43 main anatomical targets. It contains 180 anatomical figures. There is one technique for each target.
Pros: Reminds me of human biology class. I would say this book is the Index of the human anatomy targets. When you know how something is built, you better understand how to take it apart. The 3 frames sequences are fairly simple and easy to understand.
Cons: The techniques have a rigid Kung Fu style. Some techniques involve high kicks, which I do not favor: high gravity level, 100% of the weight on 1 knee, good flexibility required.
To sum it up: if you want a crash course try the "Dirty 12" by Larry Jordan. If you are a serious martial artist then the $12 for this book are well worth it. Whatever your status is, check out "Attack Proof" by John Perkins.
The Black Dragons best work.......2005-02-12
Mr.Long does not deserve the bad rap that he takes.Dragon Touch was way ahead of its time with releasing this much needed material.I agree he should have never wore those Ultra man costumes and done those techniques ,although the neck breaks are valid. This book along with Dragon Touch 2 are his most complete and comprehensive ones. Loads of info to be studied. The way I look at a book is if I can learn one or two things out of it.Then it was worth it.
An excilent book.......2003-05-26
I think this book is great. I did know some of the moves already, but not the prime angles. This book is great at discribing the best "angles of attack," and the effects of a good attack. I love this book so much I plan on buying the second book!

Book Description
How do you find those elusive words that you just can't bring to mind but are on the tip of your tongue? Can you remember the word used to describe a fear of heights? Do you know the word for the plastic used for gramophone records? What is the word for a water slide at a swimming pool? The Oxford Reverse Dictionary will help you find words you can't remember whereas a thesaurus will find alternatives to a word that you know. Words are grouped by subject-related key words, for example lapdog, pack, retriever, and hackles can all be found under the key word dog. -- Contains 31,000 entries listed under a wide range of subject areas and key words -- Ideal for crossword and other word game lovers who want to find the words that they are looking for -- A perfect vocabulary builder, it gives information on related adjectives, irregular plurals, and combining forms
Customer Reviews:
Oddly Useful.......2007-01-01
This useful, albeit odd, frustrating, and confusing reference work for the ostensible purposes of finding "associated" words can be more disappointing than useful. Example (1): I was looking for the word "Eucharist" -- as if one could forget such a word -- but it does not exist in this "dictionary," not under "Holy Communion" not under "Mass not under "Eucharist." Perhaps a hundred years ago, this word might not roll off the tip of a reverse dictionary, but for more than sixty years it has been the preferred appellation for all these "other" associated words. Example (2): I was looking for the name of a particular "pathology," but no entry for the word "pathology" exists. I pondered a while, and then my own reverse brain suggested "disease," a viola, "disease" has a host of pathologies. But even "disease" does not suggest . . . .
Two "features" of this reverse dictionary are baffling. The "associated" words are in bold, but the associated word's definition PRECEDES the word. Okay, this is a reversed world. Worse, perhaps, is how the "associations" are determined. Alphabetically would have been my obvious choice, since words are words, however associated. Not here, readers. The "associations" are by the editors' "degree of proximity." Proximity to what, you ask? Proximity to THEIR degree of association of words without any one else's reasons. Besides being entirely "arbitrary" (if not a bit egocentric), how can such "proximities" be determined, and assuming some standard could be found, how could anyone communicate those standards to those who are already in a search for what they cannot speak, mention, or find?
Alas, I almost threw this book in the fireplace. If any of us thought "plot" might be associated with "story," we'd be wrong. If we thought "plot" might be associated with "narrative," we'd again be wrong. So what do these editors associate "plot" with? I'm serious: "machination, Machiavellian, wheel-and-deal, synopsis." At least the "Ms" are together, even if nothing else is. The irony, here, is that the first-three "tangents" make more sense than "synopsis." How does synopsis relate to plot, and why aren't story and narrative a part of the plot? Because the "plot" is reversed against the user too stupid to find the association in the first place, if you don't object to reading explication before what's being explicated, that is.
Still, all these odd features notwithstanding, this book is sometimes useful, despite itself. But between you, me, and OUP, I suggest Random House's "Word Menu." Not quite the same, but certainly far more useful.
Hunting Down the Elusive Word.......2003-08-10
The Oxford Reverse Dictionary converges on the elusive word you canft bring to mind or do not know. It letfs you take a round about route by applying a concept, or asking a question to find the word you want. For example you probably canft recall the name of Japanese acupuncture. I thought of puncturing the skin with needles, but neither puncturing nor needles got me very far but it did raise the question, what is it? A treatment, this entry led me to the keyword therapy: shiatsu. You canft do that either with dictionary or thesaurus. I wondered whether there was a word to describe the fear of number thirteen. Under the keyword fear: triskaidekaphobia.
The Oxford Reverse Dictionary groups words by subject-related keywords: for example organ, advertorial, kill, D notice, silly season, chequebook journalism can all be found under the keyword: newspaper. A helpful feature is the apt and succinct and right-on-target definition that precedes every word or phrase. Taking a word out of the above list for example silly season is defined as high summer, when there is a dearth of serious news.
Presented in the most ideal format yet compiled to find and learn new words. Keywords are in bold print to assist with going back and forth from text to monitor to notes so you get the information you need in the shortest and easiest fashion. The typeset, layout, choice of paper and heft of the ORD will soon make it familiar and comfortable and a word tool of choice of the student, writer, crossword buff and anyone whose business is words. - - This text refers to the Library Binding edition.
A Boon for the Writer/Poet!.......2000-07-01
So often I'll have a word I need "on the tip of my tongue" and then it disappears. The Oxford Reverse Dictionary is a marvelous source for finding those elusive words. The other day I wanted the word for pig intestines used as food, so I looked under "pig" and there it was: "chitterlings." I find this an indispensable resource.

Book Description
The brain is a fearsomely complex information-processing environment--one that often eludes our ability to understand it. At any given time, the brain is collecting, filtering, and analyzing information and, in response, performing countless intricate processes, some of which are automatic, some voluntary, some conscious, and some unconscious. Cognitive neuroscience is one of the ways we have to understand the workings of our minds. It's the study of the brain biology behind our mental functions: a collection of methods--like brain scanning and computational modeling--combined with a way of looking at psychological phenomena and discovering where, why, and how the brain makes them happen. Want to know more? Mind Hacks is a collection of probes into the moment-by-moment works of the brain. Using cognitive neuroscience, these experiments, tricks, and tips related to vision, motor skills, attention, cognition, subliminal perception, and more throw light on how the human brain works. Each hack examines specific operations of the brain. By seeing how the brain responds, we pick up clues about the architecture and design of the brain, learning a little bit more about how the brain is put together. Mind Hacks begins your exploration of the mind with a look inside the brain itself, using hacks such as "Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Turn On and Off Bits of the Brain" and "Tour the Cortex and the Four Lobes." Also among the 100 hacks in this book, you'll find:
- Release Eye Fixations for Faster Reactions
- See Movement When All is Still
- Feel the Presence and Loss of Attention
- Detect Sounds on the Margins of Certainty
- Mold Your Body Schema
- Test Your Handedness
- See a Person in Moving Lights
- Make Events Understandable as Cause-and-Effect
- Boost Memory by Using Context
- Understand Detail and the Limits of Attention
Steven Johnson, author of "Mind Wide Open" writes in his foreword to the book, "These hacks amaze because they reveal the brain's hidden logic; they shed light on the cheats and shortcuts and latent assumptions our brains make about the world." If you want to know more about what's going on in your head, then Mind Hacks is the key--let yourself play with the interface between you and the world.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but disappointed.......2007-07-02
Learning about the mind is okay, but I didn't learn anything that I hadn't seen in Psych 101, and a few interesting articles later on.
Calling it a "hacks" book is false advertising, at best. Should it make it to another printing, I would hope O'Reilly would rename it.
The information seemed accurate, so I'll give it that.
Mind hacks.......2007-02-13
This is a really great book. More novelty than improvement, but still great. If you're looking for something that will be useful as well as attention grabbing then look for the second edition; "Mind Performance Hacks"
Not really a "hacks" book.......2006-11-02
I was sorely disappointed in this book--I checked it out from the local library and hoped that it would actually live up to the subtitle of including tips and tools for using my brain. It didn't; the few "tips" included were those that are found in virtually every other discussion of how to improve memory.
This book is more geared toward folks who are designing user interfaces--it talks about how the brain processes information (and thus describes ways to improve information conveyance).
Mind Hacks: Tips & Tools for Using Your Brain.......2006-07-25
It's a book very interested about language in mind and speech comprehension. I read a short comment in BBC Focus magazine and I wish to read because it's very easy to learn the misteries of mind in cognitive science applied to language and psichology.
A fun book.......2006-04-30
It is not a typical "hacks" book in that it does not tell you how to utilize you brain more effectively or do neat things. It *does* have a lot of exercises that show you cool things on how your brain works with sections describing how your brain works - and a number of experiments (blind spot, Magnet interaction with the brain, word parsing in the the mind, and so on). This book goes very well with a recent title called _Mind Wide Open_ by Steven Johnson.
If you want traditional "hacks" the book "Mind Performance Hacks" just came out, and is chock full of those sorts of experiments, while less informative, does do things like memory tricks, meath calculation, creativity enhancement and so on.
I view "Mind Hacks" as more informative, though, so would recommend this as the first one to get, though the next purchase in this should be the "Mind Performance Hacks."

A mind is a terrible thing to waste...........2007-08-11
So buy this book and make the most use of it!
Just think of this book as kind of martial arts program for your brain. Each chapter (and there's 22 in all) stands out on its own and discusses a particular area you can improve on, such as memory, creativity, math, communication, and so on. It's an easy read and since each chapter stands out by itself, you can jump around and go to the areas that interest you the most. A great book with a lot of clever and PRACTICAL ideas, I give it 5 stars easy. Also liked The Sixty-Second Motivator to improve one's motivation.
Pretty good.......2007-05-22
The book is filled with plenty of hacks, although some of them were somewhat useless and uninteresting to me.
The memory hacks are pretty decent, but they don't go into enough detail on how to actually learn to use them. If you figure them out they work incredibly well, though. Some of the fast-math hacks were pretty helpful as well. One of my tops, however, was the hack that shows you how to calculate the weekday of any given day.
Good buy, good as a reference book just to learn something new if you ever need to.
just not that impressed.......2007-03-30
I bought this book sort of on a whim, hoping it might be a real gem. I've read some of the Hacks but not all of them. To me, they seem to skirt around the edges of usefulness, implementability, and impact. The strongest points seem like things I've heard elsewhere. I'm going to go back to the book based on all the positive reviews here, but I'm skeptical.
Just what I was looking for. .......2007-01-14
Focus on getting your mind expanding/growing. A great and highly useful set of tools, perspectives on maximizing your mental abilties. Wonderfully written, precise, Although I have been a software developer for 27 years, the Perls scripts are not essential for the non-developer type. Great for those of us heading into the 60+ years bracket. Got to be worth the bucks. Lots of great hacks. Buy it.
OK but not full of new things.......2007-01-08
It was OK and mostly worth the money but it was not full of new things for me. The hype on this book made me expect more out of this than I received.
