River of Promise, River of Peril: The Politics of Managing the Missouri River

Snaking 2,540 miles from Montana to the Mississippi River, the Missouri is the longest waterway in the nation. Its basin--stretching 530,000 square miles--extends broadly into ten states and twenty-five Indian reservations. For millions of years the river and its tributaries meandered untamed. But that irrevocably changed with the passage of the Pick-Sloan Plan, part of the Flood Control Act of 1944.

In River of Promise, River of Peril, John Thorson takes the first comprehensive look at how and why the Missouri River basin--now with six major dams and hundreds of miles of navigation canals--has become one of the most significantly altered drainage systems in the country. He also looks at the consequences.

The Pick-Sloan Plan, he argues, has not fared well over time, particularly in its failure to provide an effective blueprint for regional river management. Persistent conflicts over the river, he contends, illuminate important weaknesses of federalism in dealing with regional resources, the most glaring being the exclusion of any proactive role for Indian tribal governments.

To support his argument, Thorson examines the physical, demographic, and political features of the river basin; analyzes the comprehensive river development that gave birth to the Pick-Sloan Plan; reveals why the original goals of the legislature were never achieved; explores the deep-seated and continuing tensions between basin governments; and investigates how Indian tribes, the river's ecology, and federalism have been damaged as the river has been developed. He also describes the various associations created and later abandoned from the sixties to the eighties and assesses their virtues and limitations.

Thorson sees in the story of the Missouri River Basin the vertical and horizontal strains of federalism--the states chafing against federally mandated and controlled projects exacerbated by the lack of constitutional guidance for handling conflicts among neighboring states and with Indian nations. Not just bent on spotlighting problems, Thorson also evaluates different approaches for improved river system management and recommends a Missouri River management institution based on environmentally sensitive policies, a strong state role, and full participation by the basin's tribal governments.

Waters in Peril presents the most recent scientific evidence produced by internationally renowned ocean scientists on the current state of ocean ecosystems, globally. Covering over seventy percent of the earth's surface, the ocean is the world's largest common property resource, jointly owned by over six billion humans. It is the foundation for life on earth as we know it.
The content ranges from the movement of essential nutrients in the sea to the loss of diversity as a consequence of overharvesting practices and habitat loss. Essential to the maintenance of complex ecosystems is the proper functioning of biogeochemical cycles within the oceans. Waters in Peril addresses this topic by detailing behavior of the essential nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus, and discussing how these cycles are being altered so as to compromise the function of ocean ecosystems. Issues regarding how man-made activities are further altering the structure of oceanic systems are also discussed. In addition, the mechanism for and consequences of the loss of biodiversity are described, with issues such as overfishing, the invasion of exotic species, and the loss of ocean habitat being presented in such a way that the average reader can readily grasp the concepts.
Rather than end on a negative `Doomsday' note, the final chapters provide recommendations and directions for solutions as to how to reverse these human-induced trends.

For the guy giving this book 2 stars because it wasn't a history of the SAS- did you read the title? "THE SAS FIGHTING TECHNIQUES HANDBOOK" um- should have been self-explanitory...

Excellent intro to special forces.......2004-01-30

This book provides an interesting and informative overview of the special forces for the layman. It describes their training, equipment, missions and tactics in great detail. The author writes accessibly and uses plenty of examples from 20th century special operations and warfare.

The best thing I found about the book is the diagrams. It literally has hundreds of diagrams of specifics. For instance, it presents layouts of common ambushes used by small-size guerilla teams, a cross-section of a typical hostile border crossing and a plan of the angles and arrangement with respect to a landing site. There are heaps and heaps more diagrams, tables and stories.

The book covers logistics, borders, land, sea and air operations, contingencies, counter-terrorism and intelligence. A great read for all who've seen plenty of thrillers and are eager for the real thing - which is even more interesting.

When I bought this book, I was looking for an introduction to special operations, including recon, ingress, and egress. This book not only covers this, but also deals with VIP protection, Intelligence networks, and survival in case the op fails.
The only problem with the book is the title: the book concentrates on special forces in general, not just SAS.
Apart from that, excellent.

Here we have yet another of the seemingly endless flood of books that emblazon "SAS" on the cover as a misleading sales pitch. For the most part, this book is *not* about the Special Air Service -- instead it covers special forces operations in general. If you are looking for material specifically on the SAS, or specifically on SAS fighting techniques (which the title seems to promise), pass this one up...

This is a totally rad book about the tactics used by the Space Attack Sqauadron. I can now pilot a space ship to fight aliens, and the CIA (Chaps In America), which still tries to control my mind. But the tin foil hat stops them cold.

This book is good to have and has a lot of great references to go by especially if you are in a supervisor or managers position..highly recommended.

Everyone is faced with tough conversations at work and this book provides practical guides for dealing with bosses, peers, and subordinates. I see where these scripts can easily be adapted to personal conversations as well. The book is organized in a very readable format. Not only are the topics easy to find, but the twists and turns of a specific dialog are diagramed so you can follow the path to the desired outcome. It even gives tips on timing. I especially liked that several strategies were described to combat different types of emotional responses that may be encountered. Most books I've read give general advice on handling difficult verbal situations, but this book gives word for word scripts that can actually be used in the real world. It's like gaining the insight of someone else's experience.

After taking a seminar recently, I decided to order
this book. The instructor had the book at the seminar
for a much higher price so I wrote down the name of
the book and the publisher so I could see if Amazon's
price was better. Naturally, it was so I bought it.
There is really good information in here for dealing
with all types of business world situations. A very helpful
aid to have in the office.

This book is well done, very flow-charty with branches of what possible things can happen and how to handle them in any given situation. I was a touch dissapointed - just that I thought it would be more concept oriented. The CD is worth getting the book I suppose, since you can just keep that handy and refer to it as needed. Neutral feelings on this.

Your #1 Reference for People.......2004-01-18

Take my advice and disregard any bad reviews of this book. First off, it comes with a CD that includes the entire book in PDF with every chapter and "people issue" listed for single-click access. That alone is worth the price! What I like most about the format is how the advice is laid out like a flowchart. It starts with what you might say. Then, depending on the person's response, your next response follows a certain path. And so on. It really is a great book; it's a shame that Amazon doesn't have the table of contents available for you to see the hundreds of different situations included. I learned more low-level information from this book that the $2600 Dale Carnegie course I took. Now that's a deal!

This is an excellent book to keep in your collection for reference. You never know what difficult situations may arise, and this book gives example conversations for how to handle those situations.

Need a graceful way to get out of a situation?.......2001-01-24

I wish I'd read this book long before I had. The authors present you with some of life's stickiest situations and then tell you exactly how to handle it with words. What makes this book so invaluable is that the authors don't assume that the situation always involves bitterness--for example, their suggestions for leaving a job actually admit that it could just be a peaceful exit.

If you want to know how to disentangle yourself from an employer you're sure is going to hold a grudge, they give you elegant ways of telling your future employer about it. Use their method, and you won't sound whiny, belligerent, or even disgruntled! If anything, their methods make the former employer's words about you look questionable and stilted. I did use their ideas on this, and THEY WORKED.

To be brutally honest, this book is all about spin and the power it holds. So often in communication with one another, we forget that what we say is just as important as how we say it. In the age of emails and faxes, we're losing our manners and making unintentional enemies in the process. This book will re-educate you on the finer points of being nice and, dare I say it, being emotionally neutral.

The authors clearly illustrate that our emotions keep us from being objective about a situation, and this is why Lifescripts is so helpful. They teach you how to distance yourself just enough to see the whole picture and then give you the words/actions necessary to properly deal with the problem. They also teach about a long-forgotten nuance of communication--take a pause and think before you say it/do it/write it.

It's an excellent book that any manager, employee, or senior executive could easily benefit from, and I think it's even appropriate reading for high school age. Knowing when to say what can save you a lot of trouble...

I will never forget that day. Before Charles closed his bag definitely, I gave it this book as a sacred testament. Everything is so well thought of; situations are so clearly described that you cannot make the usual mistakes: making confusions between symptoms and causes. Scenarios (scripts) are listed as alternatives one to each other. Solutions are clever and ethical.
